Nor Cal Roundup - September 24 - Plant trades

Castro Valley, CA(Zone 9a)

That's a great picture!!! What is AHS?
Annie

Northern California, United States(Zone 9a)

American Hemerocallis Society, would be easier for everyone if it was American Daylily Society http://www.daylilies.org/ since most know what that is and AHS can be confused with American Hosta Society or American Horticultural Society.
(not to mention American Home Shield, American Headache Society, American Housing Survey, American Helicopter Society, Agency of Human Services, American Historic Society, Australian Herpetological Society, Antiquarian Horological Society and the list goes on...Daylily would be simpler) :-)

By the way, I have several threads with garden and bloom pictures on the Daylily forum of that Cincinnati trip. (pages 3, 4-5 as of today)

Oh and Stella D'oro is a perennial as are all daylilies, but it is a dormant that needs more cold to really do it's best. You may have enough cold where you are but in general, some dormants may not do as well for us here in CA, they will bloom OK but be slow in increase and vigor. Not always, just some. There are hard dormants too, they just struggle and some eventually just disappear. But if you peak at the daylily forum, you can see a whole another world beyond Stella!

Castro Valley, CA(Zone 9a)

LOL, ya I know!!! I've gone there, and have seen many in photos etc., In my garden in Carbon Canyon, Chino Hills mine was up all year as an evergreen.

I will have some iris, maybe a few daylilies, want more iris and daylilies :)
My hubby has a lot of unusual stuff, I'll have him make a list.

Aha! Here are the plant trades....would anyone be interested in Arum Italicum, yellow cannas or 4 O'clocks? Also, have vinca major and varigated vinca...and lots of it...Dottie

Merced, CA(Zone 9a)

We had a minor catastrophe early this week, a 150 year old limb on the mulberry covering our back yard and deck area fell. Boy, was that a 2 am wake up boom! It did little to no damage to the deck, house and or the millions of potted plants on the decks, thank you Lord, and we have more firewood than we can use now. BUT, it did destroy the eco-system of that area, previously a completely shaded are roughly 500 sq feet! The plants in the ground are now shaded with brilliantly coloured beach umbrellas (it looks like a circus out there) and all the 132 potted children are being moved to the few bits of shade remaining, the house, the neighbor's, you name it. It was a west limb, so guess what I have now? Total sun from noon to nine, and 107 degree weather to boot.

I would be terribly interested in trading anything I have on the list way up in this thread for plants that tolerate/love full sun and can live in a pot no matter the size. The deck is, well, empty. WAAAAAAAAA!

Modesto, CA(Zone 8b)

I will be bringing a bunch of sun-loving plants. No worries! :~D

Castro Valley, CA(Zone 9a)

Hi Jerodsmom

I would love to place my name down for one each of pink beauty, Double white, creamsickel, desiree and Herrenhauser Graten if i may, i looked up on the plant files and was drooling over them. These are a great thing for my garden as the deer do not eat them...yeahhh..

Will be writing down what i have to trade later this week, i do not have much at this point, so would be willing to go out and get something you may want if i need to, as my nursery has little of the exotic brugs in stock...

Let me know what you think.

Diane

Santa Cruz, CA(Zone 9a)

Hi Ladyanne

love the butterfly bush black night and the cleveland sage and malva- all deer resistant so wil be putting up my sparse trade list later as i am just starting my garden, but would love to trade for those if i may in some way.

Thanks Diane

Santa Cruz, CA(Zone 9a)

Ladyanne i forgot to add on the white ginger and the star jasmine...

Thanks Diane

Northern California, United States(Zone 9a)

Jerodsmom

I would love a piece of Herrenhauser Graten, I don't have one that color yet and I would love to add something like that to the warmer colors I am adding lately.

San Jose, CA

hanna1, I would love some border penstemon, passiflora vitifolia, and flander's poppy seeds.

Merced, CA(Zone 9a)

Diane, I will happily bring those for you, but I am not sure the star jasmine will take that quickly, certainly will try!. Wish you were closer, because most of my yard is supposedly deer resistant, according to Western:
Escallonia, Plumbago, Lilac, Germander, Ajuga, Carolina Jasmine, Wisteria, Potato vine, Jupiter's beard, CA poppy, Oregon Grape, Verbena, Lamb's Ears, Calendula. If I don't have cuttings, I can bring seeds for lots.

Your area wouldn't have Madagascar jasmines, would it???

Castro Valley, CA(Zone 9a)

lilystorm, I will start them for you! On the Flander's poppy, my 4 year old GD was visiting and she said, look, there's Ladybugs flowers growing there! I laughed, I had forgotten they are actually called that, LOL.
Annie

San Jose, CA

Thanks, Annie. Let me know if you want anything that I'm bringing. I'll update my post above with what I'm planning to trade/get at the roundup.

Castro Valley, CA(Zone 9a)

Oh mmqc, sorry to hear that, hope someone may have it for you!!!
Annie

Northern California, United States(Zone 9a)

mmqc, I just lost my fuschia boliviana 'alba' too last week, I think I watered it too much, it barely grew from the time I first bought it in it's 4" pot and just lost all it's leaves and then rotted. I bought it from Annie's Annuals. I really want to try it again and plan on picking up another when I go back soon. She has two huge ones there, just stunning. Let me know, I can pick up another for you and hopefully keep it alive until the RU.

Chris - aka Jerods mom thank you so much for a truly wonderful day, you are one of the most genrous people i have the pleasure to know, not only in the two brugs you gave but in the experience and the tips and just the open attitude in sharing you are a pleasure to know and i am so happy we got together in person.

I had so much fun checking out nurseries with you, but the best place by far was your back garden and seeing the wonderful mixture of plants and wow what great ideas i now have for my eventual garden.

Looking forward to other trips around the area to see garden things together.

The brugs are also doing fine and looking good.

Safe trip

Diane
