Florida Forum

Pinellas Park, FL(Zone 9b)

Is there anyone else that would like to see a separate Florida Forum. There are 4962 Florida members and it would be nice to be able to discuss Gardening as it pertains to Florida, especially with Hurricane season upon us again.
Jan...

Dave is the best. The Florida Gardening Forum is up and running.
Here is the link to the new forum:

Longboat Key, FL

I'm all for it.

We have a unique environment and are certainly subject to even more unique weather patterns.

Chicago, IL(Zone 5b)

One problem.........with the lenght of our state we really need.....

North Florida..............it can freeze there. (tulips, daffodills, dog woods.)

South Florida ............we're sub-tropical....(coleus, #1 of course, caladiums, begonias)

We are so different...

The one big tie,,,,the hurricanes...but we have the weather forum for that...

Yes?

Hap

Homestead, FL(Zone 10b)

I would be interested.

Foley, AL

I am 30 minutes away from fl.... =) can I be a part time-er?

Hi Hap,
I've live in Gainesville, Miami/Davie and St. Pete I didn't find it that drastically different. Just takes a bit of creative gardening.

Panhandle, FL(Zone 8a)

Great Lilypon, maybe I will have somewhere to hang out besides the Canadian Forum!

Niceville, FL(Zone 8b)

Please , please please!!!!!!

Moose Jaw, SK(Zone 3b)

LOLOL......hope you will still stop by there too weeds!!!

Jacksonville, FL(Zone 8b)

Count me in. But a note of correction for Hap -- we do have dogwoods here, but tulips and daffodils rot in the ground after the first season they bloom. Tete-et-tete jonquils and paperwhite narcissus are about the only spring bulbs that I've had any success with keeping alive and flowering for more than one spring.

You see there... we've already got a forum going!

Jeremy

Taylor Creek, FL(Zone 10a)

Well I don't like the state forums. I hardly ever run into some of the folks I really enjoyed from Texas and Calif. Besides how can I gloat about living in Fla to other floridians.
I visit the Texans, as I'm from there, but like meeting you all right where you are now.
sidney

Yes, I would definitely be interested. Count me in.

Ormond Beach, FL(Zone 9a)

yes, I would love a Fl forum. This is my 2nd year here and still need lots of help with this unique enviroment.

Pinellas Park, FL(Zone 9b)

Hi Sidney,
Just because there is a state forum doesn't mean you're retricted from the other forums. I too enjoy all the friendships I've developed around the country in the other forums and will continue to use them.
There are just alot of things only other Floridians will understand and it's much easier to get more opinions in one place.

Fort Pierce, FL(Zone 10a)

Great idea! Our growing season is just starting up when other people are bringing in their plants and settling in for their long winter nap! While I LOVE the pictures of the snow and the plants all snug in their GH or house windows, it gets lonesome when you want to talk about a new color of Impatience or Coleus. Everybody thinks you are just bragging. LOL

My lurking habits would not change, I would still check out Lilypon's Plumeria in her bedroom! *giggle*
Pati

Pocahontas, TN(Zone 7b)

Well I will certainly lurk often!!

Judy

Elizabethton, TN(Zone 7a)

I would love a Florida Forum. I agree, its a tall state, but I certainly have more gardening issues / plants in common with someone in Ft. Lauderdale than in Michigan.

How can you explain to someone other than another Floridian the weird growing conditions here? The only bulbs you *can* grow are "exotics" - summers are soggy when there isn't drought and forest fires - and discuss the best way to stake a tree pre-hurricane? The SW is hot but not as soggy...

I for one need suggestions for a plant for back of the border which can take up to 4 inches of standing water for up to a week at a time during the summer, but handle drought the rest of the year. It would help if it recovers well from hurricanes. Only someone in Florida or the coastal, or southern, part of the gulf states has these conditions.

Pinellas Park, FL(Zone 9b)

Hey Killer,
I have one word for you. Cannas
Jan...

Moose Jaw, SK(Zone 3b)

Patischell I would miss you terribly if you didn't!

High Springs, FL(Zone 8b)

This sounds good to me - it's not like we're isolating ourselves, but it's an easy way to address Florida-specific issues whenever necessary. It wouldn't keep me from visiting all my "usual" forums, either!

Fort Pierce, FL(Zone 10a)

Hey Budgie, thanks for the tip. I've never known anything about Cannas, but after GOOGLE'ing them, and coming back to the plantfiles, I am amazed at the variety of leaf patterns and different heights.

They may help me get past my Hosta envy! LOL
Pati

Fort Pierce, FL(Zone 10a)

Well, we've got AL, TN and Canada backing us up...where are all the FL crackers?
Pati

Chicago, IL(Zone 5b)

Yeh, 4900+, I think it should be mentioned on other forums....I, for one, never read this forum....

Pinellas Park, FL(Zone 9b)

You can cross post a link to this forum in other forums.
I've seen it done for other forums.
Jan..

Chicago, IL(Zone 5b)

WELLLLLLLLLLL...it's like this......When I wanted to start the Coleus Forum, I started posting in every forum one afternoon...Found I could cut and paste the plea for the forum.

WELLLLLLLL.....in about 10 minutes, Mr. David, shut me down...completely.........I had no access except to him....wow was I scared.....I thought it was dooms day for me....

Anyway,,,,it was considered spam and he said I could not do it.....I said, sorry. and you see I am back...

And here I thought I had such as great idea....cut-paste....paste----paste----......ooops, shut-down...
I should have gotten E for effort....! LOL

Jackson, SC(Zone 8a)

ill lurk in this forum too. as some of the flordia plants love my area.

Fort Pierce, FL(Zone 10a)

Hap, we know there aren't 4,962 ACTIVE members in FL. Would it be acceptable to run down the list and send a D-mail to the names you recognize as being active?

I think this would be a great little project for you...seeing as how you are retired! LOL
Pati

Pinellas Park, FL(Zone 9b)

Really,
Guess I'm in big trouble then. Didn't know it was a no-no as I've seen it done in other forums.
Jan...

Archer/Bronson, FL(Zone 8b)

The question is, how many Paid subscribers? They are the ones who will be able to post.

Molly
:^)))

Chicago, IL(Zone 5b)

Cute Pati....didn't know you were a comedianne......LOL

Gulfport, MS(Zone 8a)

Happy, that is too funny, lol

Good thing that he at least gave you access to him tho, eh?

Jen

i'm still giggling over that, lol

Archer/Bronson, FL(Zone 8b)

K, I just checked, there are 258 paid subscribers.

:^)))

Pinellas Park, FL(Zone 9b)

The list does designate the PAID Subscribers. I sent an email to the paid subs that I was familiar with. Maybe it would be an added incentive for some of the other to subsribe.
Jan...

Archer/Bronson, FL(Zone 8b)

Jan,

I was just reading over in the coleus forum of a now paying member, that she joined just so she could see the 8 foot coleus and hopefully get a bit of it.

So those non subscribing members can still read most forums, they just can't post.

:^)))
