I agree Howie.....I'm trying to convince him to look at playing college ball while getting an education.
But the draw of $ millions $ is hard to battle against.
Baseball fans
I hear that.
My nephew was scouted by the Texax Rangers before he left for Northwestern. Never did come to anything but he did very well in college and now has a great job. Proving your point...
Georgiaredclay... Yeah your right about the salary imbalance on the teams, and everyone (including myself) likes to point the finger at the Yankees because they do grab all the good players. Joe Torre use to play for the Cardinals as well and managed them for a couple years. It was during the time that old man Busch (owner) died and the grandson took over. The grandson didn't care anything about baseball and wouldn't put any money or effort into them and Torre had very little to work with. He then went to the Yankees and very sucessfully so. Larussa manages us now and is not well liked in St Louis for his managing style. He's an ex-lawyer turned baseball manager.
I just bought the season pass to be able to listen to all the games online at MLB.com. It was only 14.95 and well worth it to me. I'm at work during most of the games so I can listen to them here. Pretty cool setup they have. You can buy a package that allows you to watch all the games for 100.00 a season. I wish football would do that. I'll stick to listening though. I don't think they would like me watching baseball at work.
tigers/yankees
pirates
royals
dodgers
Im a willie horton fan-those were my tigers back then!
Howie... I subscribed to the MLB RADIO last year and I will this year also. I work until 8pm, so it allows me to keep up with the game until I get into the car, (turn on the radio), until I get home, (turn on the tv. ) We have a T1 line at work and the audio has no glitches, as well as at home on DSL. I have no need to subscribe to the video, however they had a free game on last week and I took a gander at it just to see what it looked like. Nice video as well, although it became grainy and blurred some when you made it full screen.
I agree with you, 14.95 is a small price to pay for a full seasons worth of baseball audio when your stuck at work. (I work in a computer room and can't get AM on the radio in there, all Cardinals games are broadcasted on AM)
Oh, yes, yes!!! Baseball is the best thing about summer. I know that is a sacrilegious thing to say in a gardening web site, but summer is not the nicest gardening month here.
My favorite teams last year, in this order, where
Dodgers
Angels
Diamondbacks
Red Sox
Dodgers and Angels can flip-flop at any time, depending on how the respective teams do. I wish the Dodgers had not let Beltre get away. I guess I like the D'backs because the Dodgers can usually beat them, but the D'back seem so good-natured about it. I have liked the Red Sox for a few years, except when they play the Angels, then I "hate" 'em.
Teams that I "hate" are Giants, Oakland, Cardinals, Braves, and Yankees. ;-)
Here is a picture of Dodger Stadium last year. This was a game against the evil Giants, which is always a sell-out.
See that little man out there with his hand up? Thats President Bush on opening day last year. He threw out the first ball for the St Louis Cardinals. He made me get to the stadium 2 hours early, made me wait in line to be "frisked", made me get chilled to the bone sitting in the shade, made me spent lots of money eating stadium food cause we were there so long.
OOOOOoooooo we get to list teams we hate too!!!
Cool!
Here are my top three most hated teams
1: Yankees
2: Yankees
3: Yankees
hehehehehehehehehe
>>Kathy says, "made me spent lots of money eating stadium food cause we were there so long.
But there's nothing like a hotdog at the ballpark, right?
And those Yankees, does anyone sort of like them or sort of dislike them? It's either love or hate. Nothing in between. (Actually DH sort of likes them, but he has strange ideas. He sort of likes Barry Bonds, too.)

I'm right with you Rikerbear on those Yankees.
I do have few other teams that I kind of like.
Cubs
Dodgers
Boston
But for the most part I like to stick with the Ohio teams. Until football season anyway.
Just curious, why was President Bush at Cardinals opening day? Is he a Cardinals fan or did they just happen to ask him to be there before anyone else did?
Is he a Cardinals fan or did they just happen to ask him to be there before anyone else did?
He's not a Cardinals fan that I know of, he use to own the Texas Rangers and I'm sure he's still a fan of theirs. I'm sure he's a true baseball fan.
I'd go to any game I got the chance to while out of town. I may not be a fan of certain team, but I'd go watch them play at a stadium I've never been to. I'm kinda open minded like that. Never know what you can't live without if you don't go experience what the its all about.
I agree with you kathy....I would certainly go to any game I could while traveling. Have been to an A's , and a Rockies game so far.
Me, too. Maybe this year we'll get to see a game in San Diego, San Francisco, or Phoenix.
I've only been to one other stadium, saw the Astros and Cardinals play in the Astrodome before they got their new stadium. I would love to see a Rockies game. Loved Larry Walker for a long time before we even acquired him. He's getting up there in age for a baseball player, he's injury prone, but I love his personality. But if I had to pick just one stadium to go to for a first, it would definately be Fenway.
I've been to Dodger Stadium (obviously) and the Angels Stadium. Oh, yeah, I was at Three Rivers when I was a kid, but I didn't care much about baseball back then. I'd like to see Fenway, and Wrigley Field, too, since they are so old.
I just remembered. I can't hate the Cardinals quite as much this year. They have David Eckstein (former Angel) and one of the Molina brothers. The other two Molina brothers play for the Angels. (Yes, I think "Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim" is a goofy name. Might as well call my other favorite team the Brooklyn Dodgers of Los Angeles.)
I was just looking at the Indians site. I guess I did not know that you could get tickets as low as $6. I'm sure the seats are not the greatest but it would still be a fun experience.
Wow I didn't realize there was this many fans of baseball on Dave's.
It would be fun to go on a road trip and go see some games with the others here. Just need to figure a way to pay for such a road trip.
Let me guess, we're all gonna go see the Yankees?
That's good Kathy. LOL No I think we will see Americas team. The Bra... I mean Indians. LOL
Actually, the Yankees would be a good choice because whoever they were playing, that is who we all would be rooting for.
So where do we get the NOT YANKEES jersees? LOL
I think Red Sox shirts would do. That's basically the same thing.
Hey I never thought of it that way. Any body watching Sundays matchup of Red Sox and Yankees? I probably will if I'm home.
I'll watch it if it is on t.v. here and doesn't have a time conflict with the Dodgers/Angels game.
It's on ESPN2 and is at 8:00 so no conflict. I'll watch just because it's such a big rivalry and want to see what the world champs look like.
Well all one team has to do is win more than a couple world series in a row to be hated. It gets boring. Who are you rooting for in the World Series? Anyone that's playing against the Yankees. That was my answer. Being mostly a National League fan, I don't hear all the rhetoric the American League fans hear, but I know what it feels like. It runs in phases. For years it was the Mets. The Mets this, The Mets that, The Mighty Mets, The Mets can do no wrong, the Mets, the Mets, the METS. We hated them because they were so grossly over praised, making everyone else seem like minor clubs. Then the Mets fell from grace. Then along comes the Braves with the same thing, The Braves could do no wrong. So people started hating the Braves, including myself, animosity over their fabulous club over shadowing anything anyone else did. Which brings us to now, the cooling down phase of the Braves, their elite pitching staff has aged and they have found out what the rest of the clubs have battled with for years.. good pitching is hard to come by. So who's next?
Howie wants to go see the Indians play at home on May 29th, as an early birthday present...Says we can stay Saturday night at a hotel in Cleveland (yay!) and then check out Sunday and head for the ball park.
Anyone game for that game? Might be fun to go together. The seats we can afford are in the nosebleed section, so we might need to keep ourselves entertained! :)
Tell them about that baseball radio package you just got online, Howie. That's pretty cool.
Yankees, Yankees, seems that's all you hear.
Now figure it out.
Steinbrener spends multi-millions on his team to get 30,000 people to come see them play, out of the city population of untold millions.
(Besides a clubhouse full of overpaid boys don't make a team!)
Look at small market teams, Minn., KC, St.Louis, etc. They can fill their stadiums with their low paid superstars.
Good thing the Red Sox are around to keep Yankees honest, other teams don't care.
Did you hear about North Dakota ? They are oing to sue major league baseball to wipe out all the home run records that were won with steriods.
They say it isn't fair to Roger Maris, who held the record before the steriod era.
Maris played for the YANKEES. You don't see them coming to his defense.
Just my thoughts,
Bernie
Gardenwife must just be skiming the thread as I have already mentioned the MLB.com radio package. She tries to be interested but she is just not a sports fan. That would be fun if any of you are in the area can could go to the game. It's a Sunday game and they are palying Oakland. The tickits we are getting are either going to be $10 or $20. Not decided which ones yet.
Go for the $20 Howie. Sure wish we lived close by. We would be best friends.
Cleveland is too far away for me, but that does sound like fun, and they are playing Oakland, one of those teams that I "hate". (DH like Indians games because he likes that guy who plays the drum.)
What do you Ohioans think of Milton Bradley? Myself, I try to think the best of people, and I think that MB is basically a decent guy but he has a self-destructive character flaw (or flaws). They say that his Dodger teammates and the manager like him. There have been no signs of the apathy that got him fired in Cleveland. I would imagine that when he was growing up, kids teased him no end about his name and that surely did not help his personality any. His temper may have been a self-preservation tool at one time, but it doesn't work that way now. Apparently he is an intellegent guy, for he was an A average student in high school and though he grew up in the 'hood, he managed to stay out of drugs and gangs and junk. Anyway, he took anger management training over the winter, so we see what happens.
As for the Yankees, it is because if Steinbrenner that I hate them. I don't even hate the players really, just the franchise. One time at a Dodger game, between innings they were showing some highlight reel on the screen and it was the Yankees vs someone. I don't remember what the highlight play was, but when they showed that the Yankees lost, the crowd at Dodger Stadium went wild. It was pretty funny.
Well I suppose North Dakota wants to defend their home town boy, after all I'm sure millions of dollars of revenue flood into their state with the barage of people that go there to view his home town. Whatever.
I have two thoughts on the steroids issue. 1. Wipe the records out and start over OR nail everyone of them, not just Mark McGwire. Baseball was a dying sport in the 90's and the MLB, owners, managers turned their heads while players used them. Home runs bring people into the ballpark. People bring money, money is a good thing.
Steinbrener spends multi-millions on his team to get 30,000 people to come see them play, out of the city population of untold millions
Its like spending a million running for an office that pays 250,000.00 dollars a year isn't it? Must be alot more benefits under the covers. That tells us theirs LOTS of money being made on the Yankee name: MLB rights, media advertisment, everytime a jersey is sold with a Yankee logo is money in the bank. Look at the millions of people that will just buy a Yankee shirt and never attend a baseball game, not just in NY but all over the country. I've noticed if you are around people that aren't per say baseball fans, and have no baseball club in their state, they will pick the most advertised one. Hence, people in KY are Braves fans, but they couldn't name one player that plays for them.
I'm not a Mark McGwire fan. I've been to that ballpark and waited after the games for autographs of players. I've seen him come out for maybe 15 seconds, give 2 autographs and then leave. And he wasn't even smiling at the time. There was a dad and his son that drove all the way up from Alabama to go to a game, and Mark McGwire walked by him and wouldn't autograph his bat, as he did many kids there. What I'm getting at is I'm not defending him because he was playing for the Cardinals at the time, but if your gonna go on a witch hunt, get them all. Get Barry Bonds in there. What would they do if they nailed McGwire and stripped him of the record? Then you'd have to start questioning the next guy who broke it.
Will heck Jim we can still be long distance best friends. It would be fun to watch and go to the games together though.
Wish I could go to that May 29th game Howie, but thats Memorial weekend and things are really disastrous at work prior to a holiday and theres no telling what might happen.
