Round Robin with a Twist Part 3

New York & Terrell, TX(Zone 8b)

Be careful of those bugs; they'll bite you too and they pinch awfully hard! We were once infested with them. We used that 'roach powder stuff' to get them under control. But we don't live there anymore, anyway.

~* Robin

Belleville, IL(Zone 6b)

Yep, been pinched by them, and they have a peculiar odor also.

Willoughby, OH(Zone 5a)

They aren't our American ladybugs, they are imported Asian ladybugs that do not die off in the winter, and love the warmth of our homes. They DO eat alot of aphids though!

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

For breaking new bed areas in the bad clay the builder left us, we have a guy who comes over with a tractor-pulled tiller. He calls his one-man company "Digger Dick's!" He has tilled and amended our main garden beds for 2 years now, and the soil looks pretty decent, so we figured we might skip a year, especially if I could find a little tiller I liked.

Sounds like the Mantis tiller would do a good job in places where the ground has already been worked and amended but is not recommended for breaking new beds. Is that the case?

Sorry, I know the tiller & ladybug stuff has temporarily hijacked this thread..... It's still about the seeds from The Box, as I need to get places ready for growing them! :-)

Greensburg, IN(Zone 6a)

As you see the box is ready for the mail. I added some stickers and a lot of seeds, so get ready Windy you should have it Sat. or Mon. I will post the tracking number when I get home.

Excellent! Love the smilies and the "happy trails" sticker!

I just sowed some dwarf shasta daisy seeds from The Box, and I've got some blackberry lily seeds soaking now! What fun!

Jackson, SC(Zone 8a)

anybody heard from Farmerpickle??????? the box was delivered yesterday. i sent an email but hasnt answered it yet???

Greensburg, IN(Zone 6a)

OK Windy here is your confermation number. 0303 0830 0000 5511 0560
have fun.
critt. there is so much tape on the box it may have to be striped one of these times, then they will have fun adding their own stickers, and art work.

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

oh, I'm hoping people will just keep layering decorations on top of decorations..... until none of the box surface is showing! It's fun watching the package evolve!

Greensburg, IN(Zone 6a)

well if they just use a cutter, like a razor blade to cut the tape along the top and sides like I did it will last, but, if they try to tear it off it will ruin the box.

Belleville, IL(Zone 6b)

So how much is a flat rate box to send. I never did those before. Do you just pay the same as long as it fits in the box?
Hope to see the box soon! Can't wait.

Jackson, SC(Zone 8a)

7.75 i think it is for flate rate. what ever fits in the thing goes for that price.

Greensburg, IN(Zone 6a)

well distance must have something to do with it because it cost Raven 8.95 it only cost me 3.95 and the distance to Windy from me is much shorter, as far as room in the box there is quite a bit, the seeds pack down pretty good. if this is done again I think the distance should be taken ito consideration.

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

Distance has nothing to do with the flat rate, it stays the same, but you have to choose that postage option. Sometimes the regular postage rate might be less, as kareoke found. Maybe Raven didn't tell them flat rate when it was mailed. Oh, and it's another 49 cents, I think, for confirmation number, but I seem to remember you could get that free of charge if you printed out your own postage from the USPS site.

BTW, I thought there was also a smaller sized flat rate box that cost around $4 that somebody mentioned a while back, but I looked for them in the post office and they only had the larger ones (large one comes in 2 different shapes; the one I used is more like a cube and the other one is flatter, but they have about the same volume). Maybe they've stopped doing the small one? Or maybe somebody was talking about the flat rate envelope, not a smaller box.

As long as we're sticking with flat rate boxes, I don't think distance needs to be taken into account. If it's only going a short way, then great, you might save a couple of bucks, but otherwise at least you know what the max postage will be. The seeds do pack down pretty well, although it wouldn't have fit before I took out some random paper bags and dechaffed the seed inside them. I didn't try to rescue every single seed from the chaff, I just kept the chaff & figured I'd sow it!

Sand Springs, OK(Zone 7a)

maybe we put so much art on it postal person ,
din't notice it was flat rate box ?

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

I thought my "flat rate flower" would've drawn attention to it! LOL

I think you just have to ask. Sometimes people use flat rate boxes & send them regular rate when it's cheaper. Postal person should've pointed out to Raven that flat rate would be cheaper, for sure, but..... well.....

Belleville, IL(Zone 6b)

Thanks for the postage information. I will ask about the different options when I send it out again.

Tillamook, OR(Zone 8b)

Interesting, the PO man told me that if I had gone with regular priority mail it would have cost $9 without the del. conf. Maybe the distance does make a difference...?

Raven

Greensburg, IN(Zone 6a)

All I told them was it was a flat rate box and I wanted the track number, and it was $3.95 so maybe unless you bring it to their attention they charge you the larger amount, they actualy enjoyed all the trimming, and was showing to the workers.

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

did you ask about the flat rate? because that's not $9 and does not depend on distance or weight.

Tillamook, OR(Zone 8b)

I went with the flat rate because he said that if I had gone without it it would have cost the $9, the flat rate was $7.70 and with del. conf it came out to $8.15. Aha!!! I know, Kareoke totally emptied the box!!!! :O) Just kidding, maybe her PO messed up and she got a good deal!!!
Raven

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

OH! I got confused above when kareoke said it cost you $8.95.... guess that was a typo! I think Kareoke just got a lower rate because The Box didn't have far to go this time.

Greensburg, IN(Zone 6a)

I did goof, I think you will see the by the stamp the cost was 4.95 it was 3.95 + 1.00 for the tracking. Sorry I thought the stamp said 8.95 but I guess it was 8.15 but they still overcharged you, I am pretty sure flate rate means no matter how much is in the box the price is the same, so Windy when you mail it make sure you ask about that.
I thought about sending an empty box but then my brain took over and I put a lot more in LOL

Willoughby, OH(Zone 5a)

farmer pickle,oh farmerpickle, are you there? We're waiting to hear if you got the box!

Greensburg, IN(Zone 6a)

Does anyone know how to have someone check on farmerpickle, and make sure the person is OK, I have never talked to him but I see several posts the last couple of days with persons being concerned

New York & Terrell, TX(Zone 8b)

I emailed him last week; no respose yet.

He took a Loooooonnnngggg time to send me the Longhorn okra seeds; about a month, he kept forgetting.

I hope he's ok too.

Greensburg, IN(Zone 6a)

well I just mailed a plant to Ohio, I asked about the flate rate, they said it is the same regardless of where it goes, but you must state it flate rate, tracking number is extra but our box is $3.95

Willoughby, OH(Zone 5a)

Well, I found his e-mail address from Garden Web,and used that one to e-mail our concerns. Hope we hear back soon that everything is OK.

Jackson, SC(Zone 8a)

farmerpickle is a woman. her name is wenny.

i emailed her the day i sent it and told her how many were in there and to expect it and she emailed me back the next day asking who it went to next and i told her golgi and emailed her wensday and havent heard anything. i know it was delivered according to the tracking number.

if all else fails maybe Dave can give her main email addy to one of us and we can go that way.

Willoughby, OH(Zone 5a)

oh she is probably busy, sorting through all the seeds!

Mesilla Park, NM

Wendy has sent me seeds in the past week and she sent them out without any postage from me, and seeds the week before very generous. She is probably busy and/or not home when the box got there. Have some faith please.

Belleville, IL(Zone 6b)

The reverse was only received on the 13th. If the woman works she is probably at work until late and that gives her only one day to look at it. Some people have taken longer to send it on, so I would not worry.

Willoughby, OH(Zone 5a)

Oh,yes,Windy, especially if you have to keep running back to the computer to looks things up!(that will be me!)I am actually amazed at how quickly these robins are flying. I thought it would much longer.

Belleville, IL(Zone 6b)

I remember when I first started trading seeds. I was totally new to growing things and believe it or not, had no idea what a cosmos was. LOL Someone sent me a lot of seeds as a newbie and I had to look up almost everything.

Willoughby, OH(Zone 5a)

Wenny is Fine!

San Jose, CA(Zone 9b)

I am happy to hear Wenny is fine. Golgi, it's like being a kid at Christmas, isn't it? I was so pleased with the idea of the reverse robin; suddenly being near the end was a great thing!

Belleville, IL(Zone 6b)

The box arrived this morning, so it will go out Monday morning. I haven't had a chance to look yet as I had been tilling an area out front. The box says 5.20 postage on it and I imagine that is with the confirmation on it.
Sequee, mail me your address so I can be absolutely sure it is going to the right place.
Use Davesgarden email and I will get it.

Carmel, NY(Zone 6b)

I'm going to be away on Thursday and Friday, but will advise my carrier to put the box indoors if I haven't received it before then.

What a nice surprise I will have upon my return!

Greensburg, IN(Zone 6a)

sure glad you got it Windy, I didn't remember what they charged for the confirmation, have fun.

Belleville, IL(Zone 6b)

I was looking through the list to see how many people were actually on the list, when I noticed that farmerpickle's address lacks a complete zip code. Alice, would you let Janice know so she can put the correct zip code there. I know it is wrong because instead of five numbers, there are only four. I think I counted 44 people all tolled.
I enjoyed it and it took almost three hours to go through. I also watched a video on how to plant a wildflower garden that was in the box. It was pretty interesting and I am going to try to successfully plant up a decent wild area in the far reaches of my yard. I replaced the video so others can have a look if they are interested.
Some helpful hints:
I had a paper plate out so I would be able to empty partial packets onto it and use it for a funnel to place the seeds in my packet.
Have some scotch tape so you can reseal the packets once you remove the seeds you want.
A marker is good and a piece of paper so you can scribble down any sowing info the person may have included.

There are tiny seeds stuck to the tape that the box is sealed up with. I don't know what type they are, but I scraped as many off as I could, and am going to sow them and see what they are. They look like poppy seed or maybe petunia. Something must have spilled at one point and they are on the run. LOL we may be sowing something in the mail carrier's car.
I actually found some stuff I don't have and I also saved some stuff from my stash to add to the reverse robin when it gets around to me.
