Yes, Critt; I'm waiting all the way down here at the end.... wah.... I'm jealous!

Round Robin with a Twist Part 3
Critter feel free to throw in a few big buck day lillys ? LOL
Ummm, windy, I'm not thinking of removing anything from The Box just to save on postag; I think you misunderstood. My comment on duplicates & partial packets in my post above was meant to indicate that the seeds that I picked out for myself were mostly from duplicate or partial packets, in other words that most of my choices did nothing to reduce the diversity of seed in The Box. In fact, with the seeds I'm adding, I'm pretty sure there will be a net increase in the number & variety of seeds in the box. I'm sorry if my wording was confusing. The Box is getting better!!
I'm planning to pick up a flat rate box tomorrow at the post office, and I will see if the seeds fit. If it's not close, and it may not be, then I'll just continue with the larger box. I thought maybe Sequee had a good suggestion that if there were just a few packets that didn't fit in a flat rate box, those packets could be sent to meet up wtih the reverse robin. In that case, it makes sense to choose duplicate packets to send in the other direction. In some cases, there are 3 or more duplicates, so the forward robin wouldn't be deprived. I'm waiting to hear Alice's opinion on splitting off a few seeds for the reverse robin....
Sorry, tazzy, I don't have any big buck daylilies! :-) Do you grow AV's? I could try to pack up some leaves if you want to start any new violets. BTW, do LMK if there's anything you're looking for (email is fine), and I'll see if I have anything to add as a bonus just for you!
Does it matter if we send it USPS or UPS? UPS will be cheaper for me.
I don't think it matters, as long as you get a tracking number for it and send it by air (ground rates are cheaper, but then the box could start taking 10 days between destinations, which seems a bit long). But this is my first robin, so there may be a reason USPS is better that I don't know about. If it fits in the flat rate box, then that will likely be the cheapest option. DH will pick up a box for me tomorrow, and then we'll have a better idea about that. The current box is maybe a little more than half full, and that's with the packets fairly jumbled around, so certainly a smaller box is feasible at any rate. Steve put in enough packing peanuts to half fill a paper grocery bag, which gives you some idea of how much extra space was in the current box.
critt
i grow anything that dosent bite my hand
so i will find something in box im sure ?LOL
LOL, Tazzy!
If I don't make it to the post office before Monday, I will be sure to tuck a little extra something into The Box for you to make up for keeping it over the weekend! I don't seem to have anything that's exactly on your want list, but maybe a few seeds of 'Ballarina Mix' Datura? or Blue Picotee MG? And, yes, you'll find plenty to love in the selection inside The Box as well!
I have a flat rate box, 11 7/8 x 3 3/8 x 13 5/8. I coulda made a better effort to put them all in there I think, but DW did not like the shape. Said it was not as "nice" as the bog box. Go figger. But she donated from her vintage sticker stash to decorate THE BOX, so ...
(Wonder if crit can decorate...)
yes i love dats
hey, I'm quite artistic! I'd manage something! But you're right, that's a consideration.... If I try to get it all into a flat rate box, tazzy won't get to admire the sticker decoration job in person.
but I'm sure I can add a little more decoration than the USPS logo to the box if I do use a new one! More importantly, so far I've put 30 more packets into the box, most of which have enough seed to share several times. I emailed Alice a list so she can request anything she'd like. If I don't make it to the post office Saturday morning, then I may take another pass through my stash and add a few smaller packs as well before The Box goes out on Monday.
Hey, I got to chat with Steve's DW tonight.... she's sweet! and very funny! They were eating strawberries..... real ones.... I'm having "zone envy" again.
DH brought me a flat rate box (the deeper one, which I thought would pack better), and everything fits!
I told you I was a good packer!
I've done quite a lot of sorting, repacking, relabeling (no more plastic baggies with marker wearing away), and dechaffing. That probably helped reduce packing volume.
I was still impressed that everything fit, especially as the packet of seeds I added was 2 or 3 times the volume of packet of seeds I took out. There's still about an inch of space at the top of The Box, so it's not stuffed so full that more can't be added. :-)
I don't know if I'll make it to the post office before it closes tomorrow at noon, but I can mail it from the substation on Monday, which will likely be about the same as mailing it from here today would have been. (I have no explanation for how the robin reached me from CA in just 2 days. I've never received a package in less than 3 days before that wasn't overnighted.)
I hope nobody thinks I've been "sitting" on the box too long. I did take time to improve packing & labeling, and it will now cost $3 less to mail. Also, I've added quite a bit to the robin. Hopefully, all that makes up for not turning it around in record time. (Yes, I guess I'm still a little defensive after Windy's post; I don't want anyone thinking I'm selfish or cheap!)
I've been having so much fun with all these seeds! DH says he should've taken a picture of me sitting in the middle of the family room floor, surrounded by all these little packets & baggies, wearing a big silly grin! He put up some more shelves for me so I can get another 8 flats under the lights, and all I can say is that space is going to fill up fast!
Is it to late for me to be added to the RR?
vicki
Both Robins are closed since there are so many people already on the lists. The RR is the original list, only backwards, since some people may not see the first one until the end of the year.
I am so sorry I am always slow. Anyhoo, robin is in flight to momcat - I will post numbers and tracking # later. Just wanted to let you know.
Confirmation #0304 3490 0001 7424 8829 headed to Deb Peters with 192 packs of seeds.

I think everyone so far has been marvelous about keeping thebox on it's way even though I know how impatient you must be for the box to land at your doorway :). I have put the latest information on the map and have posted it to:
http://www.picturetrail.com/rochester1
For those interested in cold hardy plantings, if you look in my Calgary zoo pictures, I took lots of photo's of the gardens (but not many of the animals :)
Mindy
plantnutz I wish I had thought to count how many were in the box when I got it and how many I added!!! What fun to keep track of!!
Critterologist counted the ones in the larger box and their were over 300!!! We are pretty close to that number on the backwards robin and I think this one probably has a wider variety going out than mine did!
Lets see if we can catch up with the other Robins' numbers!!!
You won't have to count them all again just count how many you take out and how many you put in and then we can add and subtract to come up with the new number!!!!
Thanks so much plantnutz for adding another dimension to the robin!!!!!
DH took The Box to the USPS substation at lunch time.
Confirmation number is 0304 1560 0002 5456 7417
I didn't do an exact count, but I added 30-some packs, so I think the Robin is somewhere around 325. Most of the packs I added should have enough seed to be shared a few times, especially the sandwich baggies with the birdhouse gourd and the zinnia seeds!
I could've added a full baggie of birdhouse gourd seed, but I thought that would be more than 45 people could possibly use, so I exercised restraint. :-) Anyone further down the route who doesn't get birdhouse gourd seed, LMK!
(edited to add confirmation number)

Wheres the reverse robin at these days?
The reverse robin just landed here today. I am amazed at the number of packs wedged into that box!! And all so neatly, too!! LOL!!! I will try to get this back out tomorrow, but no promises, my daughter has a track meet tomorrow afternoon, and I may not have time to stop by the post office after work. If not tomorrow, Wednesday at the latest. I will post the tracking number.
Deb
getting ready to pounce on mailman ?
he hates when i waiting for box ,if it doesn't come
i give him dirty looks LOL
Hey, I was wondering.... Is the reverse robin also exempt from the usual rules about putting in when you take out? Not that it's a problem so far, since it looks like both robins may be growing rather than shrinking. It's fun to watch these robins fly!
Would you guys help me since you are all such a fun group? AS suggested, I am creating a new box for a round robin but I have read some of the threads from the "Old folk" around here :) who mentioned how they had more than enough of the common seeds flying around and would be interested in some of the more unusual seeds. My mission is to create a box with those seeds. Would you guys mind going to this thread http://davesgarden.com/forums/t/497673/ and posting what seeds perk your interest? Alice, thank you for letting me post here! See you soon!
Mindy
The reverse robin was mailed this morning. Confimation: 0304 1560 0004 6492 7087.
Watch out Imzadi!!! It's on it's way!!!
Deb
will post when it gets here. hopefully it will be here by saterday.
REG> Robin got here today is boxed and readty to go TO raven in morning . Thank for surprise Critter , WHAT WAS THE BULB? LOL
Good heavens, you turned that around fast, tazzy!
I'm glad it got there quickly.... I told you it'd be fast mailing it from the substation!
The bulb is an oriental lily, from a "mixed" bag I just got from Dutch Plant Farms. I didn't realize I'd forgotten to label it! More of a surprise that way maybe? :-) The 'Ballarina' datura seeds are from an extra pack that Steve (srkrause) sent me.
I took a couple of photos of The Box as it looked on its way to tazzy....
i am hyper and if i don't do fast i forget ? LOL
thanks again it has been fun
Well, Critter, you are quite the artiste! Nice job!
getting close now, I have my camera all ready LOL
Thanks, QueenB, but I think that qualifies more as doodling than art! I just couldn't send out a bare box after receiving that big one with all the stickers from Steve. I don't know if tazzy sent on the same box or if she had to switch....
Looking forward to seeing what's happening with the backwards robin, Kareoke!
I am not in the backwards Robin, mainly because I will not be in Indiana at about the time it may arrive here so thought it best to drop out.
whoops, sorry, Kareoke, I didn't check to see which robin was getting close to you! Apologies for the confusion.
critter. no problem :)
what are you guys sending to each other... ??
Hey, Raven! I didn't know you lived in Tillamook! What a fabulous neck of the woods you are in! I haven't beem there since the late-80's, but I still have my Tillamook Cheese Sweatshirt! What a cool place to visit!
Hey, tazzy, I love the decorations you added to The Box!! DH was laughing at me while I was doodling; he didn't understand that jazzing it up was part of the fun!
Daisygirlie, I can see this would be a confusing thread if you just found it! Here's what's going on:
aknapp started this as a round robin with a twist, the twist being that she was putting hundred of extra seed packets into a box to be sent around and didn't expect to get any seeds back at the end, so there's no requirement to put in as many packets as you take out. However, since the robin is going down a list of I think 45 people, people are encouraged to play fair, maybe just take the few seeds that they need from a packet and leave the rest for somebody else. So far, the robin seems to be getting bigger as it goes along, as this is a nice way to pass along extra seeds.
At some point in all this, a "reverse robin" also got started, and there's another box of seeds heading up the list of participants. That box seems to be growing as well!
I should probably note again that both robins are closed to additional participants, since it may well take the rest of the year for either one to finish its rounds.
