I live in Presque Isle which is about 13 miles north of Alpena which is about 230 miles north of Detroit. I am a displaced Hawaiian. The first year that we lived here in 2001 we burned 10 cord to heat a small house. Now we are getting used to the cold. I grow hydrangeas, hostas and pulmonarias and what ever else,
Gary
Welcome Grannymarsh and you too Gary! How nice to meet you both. I hope you enjoy your visits to DG.

Hi to Michigan gardners I am from from Saline (5b).
I am just starting in to recover my yard from some years of negelect (Think weed city). I am planting bulbs (tulips and lillies) and am going to try dalhias in the spring. I was mobilized into action because my 2nd grader is interested in flowers and gardening is something we can do together.
I do have some question about a problem area which I will eventually post about once I get a picture (Basically an area between shed and fence). Will post some general pictures for ideas also.
On quick question: Has anyone had any luck growing magnolias in my area? I am seriously considering getting one or two sun spires. I need small trees where small is primarily spread (less that 10').
Lester
Lester
Welcome to DG
Theres a lot of magnolias arond my area.
I'm 1/2 hour east of you.
Paul
Welcome Lester,
Good luck taking the garden back from the weeds. I know how fast they can take over. I have a neighbor with a beautiful large magnolia but I'm not sure of the variety and I'm in zone 5B also. Your best bet is to go to a reputable local nursery and ask which variety is hardy where you live and their recommendations.

The Daylilly man lives in AuGres, and so do I. He is on Tonkey Road and I am probably 5 miles from there. Did you know that he is closing down his operation. He is really not in the best of health. If you will email to me your home address with your phone number I can put you intouch with some real estate people here in AuGres. Can I ask why you choose AuGres area?? Not too many people know of it.
Deann
Hi cooksterann,
I live in Au Gres also. I hope you find a place near here to buy. My son just bought a fixer upper on Delano Road. It needed everything though and he's still working on it to make it livable. The price was right though. :)
Good luck in your search. You can look around online by going to realtor.com and typing in the zip code of AuGres which is 48703. Let us know if you get up here. Sorry about your bad health.
Brenda
Hi Everybody. I checked out your forum because I still have some "Michigan blood" in my veins. We moved from Croswell (Does anyone know where that is? 90 miles from Detroit, 90 miles from Lansing [or is it Flint?] ...anyway, 20 miles from Port Huron, for sure, and one mile inland from Lexington.) when I was eight years old to Memphis. What a culture shock! But I managed to get a southern drawl, and I guess by now I'm a full-fledged southern girl, since it's been 50 years ago :)
I've been looking at your pictures, and it really makes me homesick. The black dirt, the deer, and that beautiful bleeding heart. I remember our neighbors having a bleeding heart, and even though I was a little girl, I thought it was SO BEAUTIFUL. So when I got the gardening bug, I tried to grow one down here in Olive Branch MS. It comes back every year, but it's not like a MICHIGAN one!! Not as big, and not as beautiful.
My grandfather used to grow roses in Croswell. People would come from many, many miles away just to walk through his yard. One of my biggest memories of him is him taking care of his roses... all the time. They were so beautiful, and we have many, many pictures of them, for which I'm glad.
Anyway, y'all Michiganders keep this string going so I can stop in from time to time to get a Michigan fix. When I get in here, I get homesick!
Pat from Olive Branch MS
Well...welcome to the Michigan...forum...you can get your fix anytime....smiles...Diana
Thanks, Diana! I will :)
Welcome Pat,
Glad to see you visiting the Michigan forum. I'm sure there are tons of things you can grow down there in MS that we can't grow here. I remember seeing pampas grass down in North Carolina and how envious I was of it. I did order some and managed to even pull it through our mildest El Nino winters for three years but the first winter it dipped belong 0 it was a goner. :) I did have people stop and knock on my door wondering what that grass was and where they could get some. The last year it was alive I had 82 plumes on it (I know cause I counted them all). I also am envious of your Crape Myrtle trees. I ordered and grew the hardies of the myrtle bushes (had an Indian name that escapes me) and babied it and got it through a couple winters. It would die to the ground and come back but never got large like a tree and finally succumed to our harsh winters. So, while we can grow lilacs and bleeding hearts you can grow all those fancy warmer weather flowers that we drool over.
Hope you stop by and visit often.
Brenda
