Cindy,
I was down there last fall - I drove and drove the parking lot of that mall in bewilderment as it was to late to shop. I did however get a coffee at Starbucks.
What a change huh? Yes it's Sylvia's...years back it used to be Mike & Sylvia's Super Sub Shop before they split. My mom used to take us their as children and their food hasn't changed in years. I tried to talk their son into starting another shop in Houghton or Higgans Lake - perhaps going into partership as I've been a manager in the F&B for years. No place up here has pizza or subs anywhere close to what they offer. I always make it a point to buy a large pizza or two or three (lol) and bring it back to my friends and employees to enjoy (if it makes it back before I devour most of it that is). You're daughter must like working their as everytime I go their it seems the kids are always having fun at their job.
Warm Regards,
Nanc
So what neck of the woods are you from? (introduce yourself)
Nanc and to think I live a mile away from Calders...Your right their chocolate milk is to die for...
Have you tried their egg nog??I try to visit their farm at least a few times a year...I could go on about all their products..everyone JUST has to try them... :o)))
Loretta...
Welcome Nancy and come on over to the rose forum! ;-)
http://davesgarden.com/forums/f/roses/all/
Loretta, Calders eggnog is wonderful. I wouldn't get it from anyone else. You certainly get spoiled on it.
Welcome Nancy! Glad you found your way to the michigan forum here at Daves.
I love Calders buttermilk!! Yum!! Nobody makes buttermilk as good as Calders does. I haven't found anyone up here that sells it though. :(
Brenda
Rhonda--Welcome to Dave's & the Michgan Gardening forum
P.S. You think you have 'only' 2 red squirrels ?????? That's like having only 2 mice.....They are the most destructive animals we've ever come across. Worse than porkies.

Big Welcome to Nancy. Everyone is very friendly here a Dave's.
welcome to rhonda and nancy-glad to have you join us here at daves.
I have been gardening for the last 15yrs pretty heavily-want to slow down and enjoy it soon(like thats going to happen)
Deann is always telling me i need a 12step program for my daylily addiction and then the iris, hosta, lilies and roses-do you know how many steps that is!!! lol
If you need anything here just give a "yell" and some one will be along to help!
welcome
dori
Hey Dori... What about your new found love Coralbells...Come on now tell us how many you got and which ones...
Loretta....
shhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhs! no one knows about that one really!
i will have to go out and see what ones made it. Hope that co-op is a go soon!
I had to pass on that hosta co-op-to many to fast!!! LOL
Hi Loretta - Yeap - the Egg Nog is the best too. Last year I went down and came back with about 14 pints to give out as gifts (it certainly got a bit more expensive this last year). All their products are excellent. Thanks for the welcome!
Brenda - - can't find any of their products around here either. Wish I could because I have gone down their just to get egg nog for gifts at Christmas. If there were a place closer it would surely save me some cash - especially with the price of gas. Thanks for the welcome!
Dora, Every year I say *enough - after all - there can't be any room for more* - but some how I find a reason to make room and add more - too funny - yeap I'm addicted!!
Thanks for the welcome!
Cottage_Rose, I jumped over to the rose link and searched an hour for subjects on roses for my zone - seems most forums are for those who live in much warmer zones then mine. Do you know of a area where they discuss roses for those who live in zones 3 to 5? Thanks for the welcome hon!
Nanc

Hi Nanc
Welcome to Dave's and to the Michigan Forum....Great place to be....Your not too far from where I live....I am in the AuGres/Tawas area. I grow Roses here too. I'm in zone 5. I have uncovered mine, and pruned them back, and alot of mine now have leaves on them. I am getting ready to fertilize them this week. They say not to fertilize til the plant has leaves. I have quite a few hybrid tea's and climbers. I can share with you what I do with mine and I have a site I put my pictures on you can check it out. I love the David Austin Old English Roses. You can not go wrong with them. They are very hardy for cold zones. I also have have some John Davis Roses which are great for our area.
Do you know about our Plant Swap Roundup in June? It will be in Bay City at NotMartha's house. That will be a great way to meet everyone one on one....Hope you can come.

Singing Bridge....wow! I live down that road about 3 miles, just as the river makes it turn into the woods....Did you know that the Restaurant was sold a few years ago, and Gina does not own it anymore or I should say her father who passed away. The new owners who came from the Detroit Area could not make a go of it, and the place is up for sale. They will close it down the end of May if the place is not sold. They sorta chased customers away by all of their rules and regulations. People from "down below" just will never learn that up north is a different place to be. Interesting that you said you use to work there. I remember that place back in the 60's and 70's . It was a happening place. People just don't smelt dip anymore like they use to. I see fishermen up there but not like it use to be.

Most of us cold zone folks here on the rose forum are still experiencing "dormancy" so not much going on....yet. ;-)
I would say feel free to just ask questions or make comments for zone specific topics on the rose forum here.
Or you could join Rose Garden Friends a little msn forum I run.
http://groups.msn.com/RoseGardenFriends/welcome.msnw
We have cold zone regulars there including an ARS Consulting Rosarian to answer you hardest questions.
Even if you don't join we have alot of links on the link page and make sure to read the "Cane Hardy Roses" page.

Deann, Yes I knew Gina sold the place. I worked with her boyfriend at the shop in Tawas.
I worked for the Draper`s on their muck farm when I was real young , I worked for Dar and Ecil in the early 60`s. it was a going place then and the food was great. I haven`t been that way in years.
guess, I will take Hubby for a ride and show him where I grew up Aleta
Aleta.......If you do show him the singing bridge please, come down Turner road about 3 miles....and visit me.....I am on Edmonds Road, just turn right, you will see horses in a field there, and come on down to almost the end of the road when you see the Redwood Greenhouse, thats me....but I have two big german shephards, and they won't bite, but will hold you at bay in your car, so wait for me to come out.....Let me know when you decide to come.....I will show you my meager garden.....
Deann
What do you mean meager gardens...It's BEAUTIFUL...I have it in my favorites along with Dori's..You two better be behaving...Are yazz??
Loretta...
Deann - Thanks for the invite on the Plant Swap - I would really really love to be there but my job requires most all weekends. I do however only work (or try to ) one Sunday of the month. So if there are swaps on Sundays and the location is good - I'd be there.
Thanks Cottage_Rose for the info on local Rosarians - awesome - . I am a member of the ARS and find their newsletters and mags interesting. I wish however they spoke more of us cold zone folks - but their info and tips are still great.
Another Kudos's to Dave's Garden..................
A friend of mine just bought a new house last year and is working hard on getting her yard full of perennials - flowers and trees just like we have been doing. We have both been collecting catalogues just trying to find *pretty* things to brighten up our yards. I got a ordering catalog from Kelly Nurseries and we both wanted to order many items as they seemed to have so many colorful trees and perennials that are beautiful in the pictures. We were both putting together a order when we found the reviews on this site for Kelly's - Thanks for saving us some money and time Dave's Garden......
This is a great site.....

You're welcome Nanc. :)
Hi. .My name is Tia, I live in Dundee (lower right hand corner of the Michigan "mitten map'', have happily failed many 12 step gardening programs, and have 'OSD' ...obsessive seedling disorder.
We are transplanted Californians that came out for 2-3 years...back in 1986. After our blood thickend up we came to love it here! It is so nice to not see the air that you are breathing. When we go "home" to California the family is always asking us if we need a jacket or a sweater! I try explaining to my 86 year old mother (who has a broken personal thermostat) that she does not need to keep her house at 86 degrees too!
We bought 10 acres and bulit in 1999. Our place had been divided off of a farm many years before and part of the property had been used to train horses. I sure appreciate their 'contributions' as the majority of the land is sand and has low fertility. The back of the property is bordered by several hundred acres of mixed woods The property came with a 1/4 acre horse pond that we enlarged to 2 acres. The wildlife is amazing! A pair of Canada geese have returned yearly to nest. They just paraded 8 babies this week.
My major enjoyments are for daylilies, iris and starting seeds. My husband cooks to relax and mentioned needing some interesting tomatoes and peppers.....so.......several noctural internet purchasing moments have created over 25 different tomato and pepper babies. This years biggest project is to create a raised bed vegetable/herb garden. The lumber comes on Monday...yippee.
It is so nice to work outside on the weekend ALL DAY and have a martini hand delivered at sunset, and hearing that dinner will be ready in an hour. His wonderful hobby is not helping reduce the size of my butt! We have one 3 yr. old grandson, "Tater" who loves to come and 'get dirty' with Grannie. I also learned my love of gardening from my grandparents. Iris, sweet peas and johnny jump-ups are reminders of many wonderful moments spent in the garden with them.
Life is very, very good. I have enjoyed getting to know all of you. Best wishes for a wondering gardening adventure in 2006.
tiswick, thank you for that delightfull introduction.
Oh my, a husband thats cooks...sigh...does he clean the house too? Want to swap?
Oh I know right where Dundee is...my husband drags me there twice a year to go to Cabelas. Thats ok, do you know how many countless nurseries and girly shops I've dragged him through?
Poor man, he has the patience of Job.
Hi Tia....and welcome to our group. I too know were Dundee is. I have a very dear friend who lives there. Infact she just retired from that prison that is fairly close by. Her name is Theresa Roberts if by chance you know her, and I always go thru Dundee on my way to Indiana.
Deann
I am a distant Michigander who also loves to watch the Michigan forum. I grew up and spent 22 years in Evart, MI. I always enjoy watching the pictures and gardens of my home state. I also have 2 acres and home that I visit in Evart. Much of my family live there so I visit every summer. I now live in Kalispell near Glacier Park. We have a large garden here and love every minute of gardening. You know we have quite a famos Garden Guru who came from Evart. Dan Hinkley is a friend who I grew up with. You need to look at his garden site. http://www.heronswood.com/index.php?orderNumber=1767970245&subtotal= He has traveled the world to get unusual plants from all over the Asian continent.
This is a view of my house here in Montana.
Hi Soferdig,
We go to Evart every time we are up at my Mother in law's in Hersey, Michigan. There is a great place there to get fish n chips on Friday night. Nice to see you here.
Fancee
Yeah I have eaten there many times. Good Pizza too. I know most of the farmers there in Hersey cause I was a veterinarian. Not too many town folk. I have fished the river many times.
Hello,
I'm new to this site, and to introduce my self, my back yard is literally 26 miles of Hines Park, near Plymouth/Northville. I got hooked on checking out the wild flowers that appear each spring in the woods. So far I've noted the Spring Beauties, white and red (rare) trilliums, Jack-in-the Pulpits, Solomon & false Solomon Seal, Bloodroot and May Apples.
This constant, slightly cool, weather this week has preserved the tulip and daffodill blooms longer that usual, and I've been so glad to walk out each morning to enjoy them.
I must get motivated to go out and 'map' them, so I can get some perrenials planted and select some bushes for a couple that died.
My rhodie bushes this year are looking mighty puny---any advice? Leave them in? Prune? Give up and replace? Was it the winter?
I am a novice at this, but I can tell that I may end up spending "quality and quantity" time on this site!
Dirty fingernails, By the Woods
Welcome Tia, By the Woods & Soferdig.
I love Trilliums also!!!!
Cindy
Hi, I'm Peggy, usually known as pj or peej. I've been a Michigander from the age of 2. We lived near Buchanan, with lovely clay soil that grew anything, and I loved the woods, the wild flowers (Ah! The Trillium!) and even the swamps.
Now we live South East (12 miles) of Grand Haven. I live in the woods, yes, but on an old flattened out sand dune. When they drilled for the well, they went down 50 feet and it was pure sand the whole way!
I am a very relaxed gardener, with stuff everywhere in no pattern. My interests are herbs, antique plants and wild edibles/medicinals. My herb garden needs to be revamped. It's just longish wide beds, no shape or attractive form. I came to this forum looking for herb garden plans. I tend to spend the most time, though, finding weeds that I don't know and introducing myself! LOL! I had a time identifying the Motherwort that grows all over our 2 acres, and I found early on how good tasting the nasty invasive greenbrier is!

Hey Soferdig
My hubby went elk hunting near Gardner MT. North Fork Creek Outfitters.
He was up in the mountains for a week. Absolutely LOVED it!
I'm looking forward to visiting MT someday too.
Cottage Rose your hubby went on the Gardener hunt. There the elk come down off the mountain and stand in the field to be shot. It is an area many Montanans try to get a permit. Usually an Elk for sure.
Thanks for the welcome. I live 5 minutes from Cabala's, so if any of you get a testosterone overload from walking thru the store, hop in the car and come on over. I'll put the coffee on or get out the ice cubes.
CottageRose...hubs can step over laundry piles without batting an eye. He has become a much tidier cook when we put in 2 dishwashers. It was less expensive than our cabinets, you can store dishes, and it has water. ( we should have put in a couple more)
Deann...Your friends name sounds familiar. I live on Wells Road.
P.S. you are probably referring to Milan Prison, which is nicknamed "Club Fed" We hear stories that accountants visit the inmates more than the families, and that cable and take out pizza is allowed.
The lumber for the raised beds came yesterday. I gave the driver 2 flats of various tomato seedlings...heh, heh, heh....
Hi everyone.. tiswick - I went to Cabellas for the first time this spring. I think it will be one of those 'been there, done that' places. We were there for a whole day. I checked out every nook and cranny. They were having a special promo going and it was wall to wall people (men...) Drove home in a small SUV that was so packed I couldn't move an inch. Did enjoy looking at the collection of old guns and the fish tanks.
pj - I am east of you - by Grand Rapids...been to GH often. Brother has a boat-a-minium right off the state park channel. Beautiful place.
Neighbor brought us over half a flat of tomato seedlings....now I have to plant them!!
Soferdig
DH didn't get an Elk but he got a Mule Deer, just a 4 point.
It was a Wilderness Hunt...they slept up on the mountain in tents and would walk/ride 5 miles out everyday to hunt.
It wasn't easy but he was up for it.
He'd just as soon live out there but we could never afford it.
Oh ya and he had a Grizzly Bear encounter. Pretty close too!
OK we all want to know about the encounter. Was it a Bruin or a Sow and cubs? Their the most troublesome. What did he do when the bear noticed him? Living in Montana is cheap (10 years ago). Now you need to work somewhere else and bring home the $. I am currently up in Alaska for 2 weeks to bring home the dough.
That picture could be a postcard! Where is that scene from and please tell me you don't do crab fishing!
We have a friend who lives in Fairbanks.
While hunting Lee was walking ahead on this trial with the guide and hunting buddy back quite aways and he spotted a single Grizzly. He's not here right now so I can't ask him how close he was to the bear) It was eating something on the ground and didn't spot my husband (thank God!) who was of course stopped dead in his tracks. He motioned to the guide to be quiet and that there was a bear up ahead (he did this by raising his arms and makes his fingers like claws). So they just sloooowly backed away and went back to their horses. They mounted up and started making alot of noise and whistling so the bear would know they were there and proceeded to go back down the trail where they bear was spotted! (I'm thinking WHY??) The horses started blowing and snorting when they got to the spot where hubby saw the bear but the bear was gone. I asked them why they went down the trail where the bear was. Seemed like a bad idea to me but I guess thats the way they had to go. I'm just thankful nobody got hurt or worse.
we use to go to dundee all the time yrs ago when my son wrestled!!!
dundee had some good wrestlers back then but Teig always won!
We are glad to have you here and hope to see in june at the plant trade
Peggy welcome to the site too! hope you can make it to the plant trade in June
i dont do alot of herbs anymore-to many other flower addictions i have!
By the woods welcome to the site and please try and come to the plant trade too!
it will be fun. The site is another of my adictions, been here since the very start and love it!
If i missed anyone sorry and welcome to the site-jump in and have fun
we have a lets yak thread started-for yaking!!!
Cottage Rose your husband did just what was right. You never want to surprise a bear. Slowly back up and raise your voice so they know that you are a human and they usually move away. They think of us the same way we do of them and don't want to mess with us and we with them. I'm sure they went back to where the bear was cause the trail they were on was the only way to or out of where they were. The bear will leave often when you make noise. My wife and I when picking huckelberries always talk sing, what ever to make noise to let them know we are there. It is kind of fun cause we sing old nursery rymes and dumb songs all day long. The photo is of the house I stay in when I'm up here the whole island is a post card! Look at this one.
We have Killer Whales and these Grey wales out in front of the house all summer up here.
I envy you living in such awesome places!
