Hi Di
Welcome to DG.
A lot of great people hang out here.
Paul
So what neck of the woods are you from? (introduce yourself)
Thanks All!
How long has this forum been running? I'm surprised I haven't found it before now. Guess I typed in the "magic words"..LOL!!
Di
Hi Di,
Welcome to the Michigan Forum, I certainly do know where Bloomingdale is. I went to camp there in the summers when I was a youngin at Big Bear Lake. I used to live in Decatur and Paw Paw so I am very familiar with the area. Amazing what a small world this is eh? We have a Scotts address, Vicksburg schools and a Portage phone number. I hope you enjoy our little group here, wonderful people. I have learned a lot from everyone, they are all very friendly also.
Hello Di and welcome to our Michigan Forum.....Lots of different stuff going on in here, but I think right now most of us are so busy in our gardens, we are not in here as much, I know that is where I have been...We have some great folks in here who are very knowledgeable......and friendly.....
Deann
Fancee, OMG! At Van Buren Youth Camp??
Do I dare say just how close I am to there?!! LOL!
Deann...I know, I have been tinkering outdoors, but trying to paint and organize, AND toss out inside.
Di
Hi everyone,
I am new to this site. I have been gardening for many years. Some winners, some failures. I love to try new plants. My biggest problem is getting my husband to give up his precious grass. He loves the garden once it is finished - but of course it is never finished!
I live in Lambertville, Mi which is right on the Ohio border, just north of Toledo. I am fairly new to this house and have to learn to deal with sand. I have probably put in a ton of peat and compost since I have moved in.
Welcome to DG
Paul
alatidg.......Welcome to Dave's and Welcome to the Michigan Forum....Tell us about your garden, and the perennials you have...
Deann
I love daisies, mums, hostas, clematis, delphinium, coneflowers. I use lilac and rose of sharon for privacy. I have been getting braver about trying new plants over the years. Like I said, some made it and some just got tossed over the fence. We have a steer farm right behind us and the cows love the "left overs".
Last year I started a plant log and was amazed how many different flowers and flowering shrubs I had collected. I have a stack of new plant sticks I need to add.
My husband calls it being in "the zone". I could putter around for hours.
Donna
Donna welcome to the site and glad to have you join us here in the Mich forum!!! If you need anything just YELL!

Hi,
I just subscribed today, and am eager to join you all. I live in Albion, in town, but on the river. Love the wildlife and the constant movement of the water. It is shallow here and the herons and ducks are happy. I have been gardening for over 30 years, but start over every time we move (about 4 times). I left a small terraced yard with lots of oak trees about a year ago. So I had mostly shady perennials. But my daylilies did very well with the dappled sun they got - they just didn't spread fast. In our new home, other than some stalwart hosta, heuchera and sedum, I am starting over again. Couldn't bring anything with me. Since I have a disability now (the reason for a move from an old 100 y.o. two-story to a ranch house), I am trying to garden with plants that will take care of themselves as much as possible. I have been concentrating on hosta, iris, daylilies, daisies, echinacia and shrubs at first. The challenge is the deer and other animals that love my gardens as much as I do. But, so far, so good.
I haven't yet read through this whole thread. I thought I would just get myself introduced, and now I can go back and learn about all of you. It looks like a good and motley crew! This should be fun.
Judy
Hello RiverLiver and Welcome to the Michigan Forum....My name is Deann and I live east of you by Lake Huron and the Tawas/AuGres area.....If your starting all over again and if its "babies" your wanting, I can help you out. Just let me know if you would like some baby perennials and I can mail them off to you. We are a great bunch here, and its nice to add you to our "Michigan family"
Deann
Thank you for your welcome and offer, Deann. If you have some excess "babies" I would be thrilled to receive a few, and reciprocate if I have something that you need, though it is pretty basic now. Because I can't play very much in the garden any more, I am trying to plant very sturdy types, esp. those that have heavy foliage and good habits. If they need spraying, staking or lots of other attention, I have to get my "fix" by looking at them on the internet or by viewing them in other people's gardens. So I am going slow in filling in, based on my own pace more than anything else. I really have gotten a kick out of my sister. She flew here from the south to help me plant daylilies in 85+ heat AFTER she had spent the spring putting in new gardens and digging in almost 200 daylilies and probably almost that many other perennials at her own home. And she seemed so happy doing it. Just love her!
I look forward to hearing more about all of your gardens.
Judy
Welcome alatidg and Judy to the Michigan forum. We're growing by leaps and bounds! Happy gardening to all.
Brenda
hello everyone!
i am in saugatuck, michigan. southwest, on the lake. i posted more at the welcome mat. am glad to be here and looking forward to meeting you all.
yahooo,
wabi
Hi Wabi,
I had not been in Douglas-Saugatuck for many years. And then we ended up there twice in June. We went to the Waterfront Film Festival in S. and shopped in D. one weekend. And on another, I arranged a reunion of old college buddies. We stayed in South Haven and shopped and ate in Saugatuck one day. All of our visitors were so impressed by our western coast, and Saugatuck and Douglas were wonderful. Love the Hunter's Lodge on Blue Star Hwy. And we noticed some beautiful gardens around town.
Judy
My name's Al, & as you can see, I live in Bay City, MI, USDA Zone 6a, surrounded by a sea of 5b. ;o) I have a large front garden with lots of bones, a shade garden, several raised beds where I'm mostly growing on material for bonsai. I have about 200 individual containerized plants for bonsai in various stages of development & I normally have between 20 - 40 flowering containers in & around the garden during growing season. I rarely watch TV, choosing instead to spend time in research on growing things & sharing fun times on this and another forum site (I even find time for family things & my business of 28 years). I belong to several garden clubs, including Bay County MG club, and two bonsai clubs. I have a lovely wife, 3 grown children, one well behaved dog & one that doesn't know what good behavior is. Favorite gardening related topics are container gardening and container soils, bonsai, trees, general gardening, and houseplants, but I'll talk about any kind of gardening with just about anyone. I hope I make some new friends at Dave's.
Al
hey riverliver!
sorry i missed you--i'm right outside of douglas, off wiley road, turn south at blue moon. we don't even drive into saugatuck during summer if we can help it LOL, elbow-to-elbow and NO parking. you can let me know next time you plan to be down this way and come have a cool drink on the deck. it's so quiet out here you can hear the creek running *GRIN*.
everybody else,
am amazed that there are so many michiganders here WOW. am reading everything i can and looking forward to getting to know you all.
hoping to get lots of help and advice as i am 5 years new to northern gardening--EEEEEEEEK!
gotta go take that bath now.
LOL, wabi
Welcome Al
To DG and especially the Michigan forum
Paul
Greetings tapla....and welcome to the Michigan Forum......I am not too far from you, only an hour and ten north of you in the Tawas/AuGres
area....however we have several members who are in Bay City. NotMartha lives there and if you really want to see some beautiful gardens, you should check her's out. Perhaps with enough members living close by, we can do a Michigan Roundup in the fall.....
Deann
Interesting, Deann. I had (recently sold) 80 acres in your neighborhood. It was on Turner Road, 1.7 miles west of the lake. I probably know some of your neighbors. ;o) Martha has already introduced herself & received an invitation to have a look at gardens & bonsai. I'll extend the same invite to you. Next time you're down my way & find yourself with an extra minute - stop in & say Hi. I'll provide easy directions if you take me up on the offer.
Al
PS I have a job to measure up your way soon. Familiar with the Davis' spread at the foot of Vaughn Hill?
tapla..............Small world!!!...I am 3 miles or so west of the lake off of Turner Road....Just as the Whitney makes its turn into the woods....that next road is Edmonds....we are down that road (north) about 3/4 mile on 200 acres....The next time your in that area....please stop by and I will show you my greenhouse and my gardens.....Not familiar with Davis spread....Is it in AuGres?? When did you sell your 80 acres....
Deann
I sold the property in '97 I think. On a platte map, look for a 70 with a 10 in the NW corner between Piotrowski & Ott's pieces. It was located on the first little crook in the road west of Singing Bridge. Myer (Meyer?) bought it & there's a 24' trailer on the front of the property. I talk to him fairly regularly. (Last conversation I mentioned he might want to sell the ash off before the borers got 'em or it was illegal) You're quite a distance from the Davis place. As you travel N on 23, just before you get to AuGres, there's a little hill called Vaughn Hill. They're at the foot of the hill.
I frequently joke about the allure of the hamburgers & chili at the Singing Bridge Store/Restaurant. I joke that during deer season, there's a fly swatter on every table & (there should be) a sign saying "Kill 10 Flies - Get a Free Cup of Coffee".
Take care.
Al
We used to dip smelt at the Singing Bridge years ago.
Paul
So you've been smelt drinking up there, eh? Though the smelt fishery has largely collapsed in recent years, it's still a great place to fish in the surf of Lake Huron. I've caught hundreds if not thousands of steelhead, brown trout, lake trout, salmon, and various other fish "out front" (at the mouth of the river).
Al
Al
we smelt fished up there in the 70's, I think its pretty much died out all over the lower.
Paul
This world gets smaller and smaller.....Know Meyer fairly well...his daughter Shelly was married to Scott Miller, who sad to say passed away at a very young age. Won't go into it at this point. Also know the Singing Bridge restaurant...Ewwwwwwww! food in there is real bad!! Did you know the Gina sold it, and there have been new owners for the past 3 years....some things just never change!!
Welcome Al to the Michigan forum.
We have a small farm in Au gres but our main home is in Garden City which is a suburb of Detroit. We plan to move to Au gres when my husband retires in a few years. I'm glad to see so many people joining in the Michigan forum.
Happy gardening,
Brenda
fishking....you have some gutsy deer there living in the city.....
Deann

Hello, my name is Toni and I am new too Daves Garden. I live in Scotts, which is a small farming community a few minutes southeast of Kalamazoo. I grew up in MI but moved right after I was married, we have lived in TX, IN and FL, we moved back to MI in 1994 and bought my families 100+ year old farmhouse and have been busy restroing it for the last few years. Now that the house is done, I get to work on my gardens, which I really love! It seems every year the gardens get bigger and bigger, I just can't seem to stop! I have a little bit of everything, but I guess the best description is I have a cottage garden and my husband has a small vegetable garden. We have 2 children, the youngest (21) is in college, the other (22) kind of bounces in and out of the house, I think when we remodled the house we forgot to take out the revloving door! If it wasn't that he was such a good kid and fun to have around I'd change the locks! I look forwarding to chatting with everyone! :)
Welcome! Fancee is from Scotts also! My sis & her DH live near Scotts.
Di
Welcome Toni to the Michigan forum. Hope you see you around. Happy gardening!!
