Hi Jeane and Ms.Katt.......
A big warm welcome to the Michigan Forums. We are a
lively bunch here, all willing to share our combined knowledge and plants with each other.
Ms. Katt, I live in AuGres/Tawas area not too far from you. I shop in Bay City and Saginaw once a week. We have other folks, from Bay City. You still have not met NotMartha (Dori) who lives close to you with just a too die for perennial garden. We had a Perennial Exchange last June where we all met and exchanged plants and just had a wonderful day chatting and sharing our knowledge. Watch in late spring, we will be planning another. Not sure where this next one will be. We also do seed exchanges as well. I am a big seed harvester, and would be glad to share seeds and "babies" with you.
Jeane.....I have a greenhouse but have not heard about Greenhouse Growers Expo.....Is it for commercial growers or just back yard gardeners like myself???? Can you send me or tell me more info on it....Just D mail me and let me know if you can. I may be interested.
Deann
So what neck of the woods are you from? (introduce yourself)
Hi Connie, I am actually on DG every day, just do more reading than posting. Always finding helpful info. Thanks for asking.
It's good to hear from you Hemlady :) I know about the reading and all the helpful info. I do quite a bit of reading too.
You all have a great evening and enjoy the (hopefully) good weather this week...
Connie
Welcome to all the new Michigan gardeners! I'm sorry I haven't checked in on this thread in a while. I was on dial up modum and it took forever for it to load up. Now I have satellite dish computer hookup and it's much faster!! Yippeee!!
I'm in AuGres. I'm a transplant from downstate in Garden City. We have owned this place for three years but I have only been living here for one year full time. I am married forever to Vern who still works and is on the road all week. Mom lives with us. She's 90 and is recovering at rehab from a femur break. She'll be home for the holidays I hope. I have one large perennial garden that I transplated from my other home. This year I put in my first large vegetable garden. I kind of over planted and we're still eating cabbage every day. Ha!!
My son and his wife moved up here and live about 7 miles from us. He started his own plumbing business. He's an avid hunter and fisherman. He and his wife just had their first baby in June so I'm a new grandma to Stacey.
I hate to weed also and in the perennial garden I Preen in early March and as soon as the perennials are all up good I mulch heavily and don't really have to weed much the rest of the season as long as I remember to reapply the Preen in 90 days. I hoe the veggie garden daily. Gives me something to do.
Stop by and visit if you're ever in AuGres. We are the only Looney's in the book here. Ha!
Welcome Jeane and MsKatt glad to have you here with us.
Im over here delta college way-so if your ever in this neck of the woods-stop in!
I have been a member here on davesgarden since the very beginning so if you need anything just holler at me and I will see if i can help you in anyway!
Im not big on seed saving anymore but i do have a few seeds I collect-Im more into trading and selling plants-Instant results!! I grow a variety of different plants here and have several addictions.
Deann glad to see you back on line-was wondering where you have been.
Hope the sunshines in your world today and its warm and beautiful-going to head out early today!!! :)
welcome to the site
dori
Thanks for all the welcomes!
Deann, the Expo is for anyone that sells wholesale or retail, big or small. I've seen a lot of small growers there in past years. Although I haven't gone to it in about 4 years. Trade show is free to attend, just need a tax id. to register with companies. Great place to see what's new and what's available in the way of supplies. The 2 days of seminars were only $40. I'm particularly interested in the one on niche markets for the small grower. Ist day is directed primarily towards retail, 2nd wholesale. There's one on alternative energy sources on Wednesday. You can find all the info at http://www.hrt.msu.edu/florAoE/GreenhouseExpo.htm
Hi Loon, My husband's great aunt lives in AuGres. Love visiting there. Will have to give you a call when we get over that way. Aunt must be about your mother's age. Maybe they've met.
Thanks for the welcome, Martha. Maybe when I visit my son in Bay City next summer I can visit your gardens. I love to see what people grow and share plants, ideas and stories.
Looks like the sun is out today, need to get out and work on some cold frames!
Jeane
Thanks for the welcome! I spent the last few days dealing with sick kids and didn't get a chance to get back online.
I hope to absorb as much knowledge as I possibly can from all of you! I'm kind of a newbie when it comes to flower gardening/perennials. My biggest downfall is designing my gardens.
And about the name...I only have two cats :) It's part of my real name!
Hi. My name is Nancy. I don't have a nickname yet. I've finally joined Dave's after utilizing the website for all the wonderful info. I live in Dearborn on a very small shady lot and have filled the back yard with hostas. I love their lush tropical look in the summer. When I moved to this house there was an odd cement ring in the back yard. I decided to dig and discovered that it was a small pond complete with water pipes{that no longer work}. In the bottom of the pond was inscribed 10/10/1930, the year my house was built. It is again a pond, now complete with a waterfall. Love the sound of the water from the den.
Four years ago, we bought a cottage on sand point in Caseville. I finally had room to expand my gardens. I potted up many of my prize hostas, filled the van and headed up. After grass removal, they were planted and looked so lovely under the maple out front. We came back the next weekend to find only stubs. I think the deer from across the street probably were laughing at me when they ate their "variegated salad". So it been a learning experience, but I have learned much since then about deer resistant planting. I'm working on several areas, each with a different focus. I have a Japanese garden area, as well as a cottage garden area, a butterfly berm, and the most challenging area--the hardy desert garden.
In addition to my personal gardening, I'm a member of the Belle Isle Botanical Society. We maintain the Lily Pond Garden at Belle Isle park in Detroit. The area had been closed for many years due to budget restraints. We also advocate for the conservatory there. We have a plant sale in May, and use the greenhouse on the island to grow perennials and vegetables for the sale. Nothing like a cold March day spent in bright warm greenhouse. Lots of fun.
Enjoyed reading about the exploits of fellow Michigan gardeners. This is an unexpected bonus on the website
Wooow...cool...nice to meet you and welcome...hehe ...There are so many great things in DG....hehe after 5 + years I am still finding..things..hehehe...Anything you might ask..will be answered..Dearborn has such neat house..and so does caseville. so welcome..and just start enjoying..

Welcome to Dave's Garden.........Things are kinda slow right now, as we are all dreaming of what we will put new in our gardens this spring. Glad to have you onboard the Michigan Forum....
Deann
Hi and welcome to Dave's Garden Nancy.
Cindy
Hi Nancy
We're next door neighbors, I'm in Allen Park.
Welcome to DG.
I'm very familar with BIBS, in fact I've been a volunteer at the plant sale for the past 10 or so years. Jan Ellison and the rest of the group have done an excellent job on the island.
Paul
Nancy,

She works at GC Hospital?
Paul
paulgrow. Are you going to be at the BIBS plant sale again this year? We have some good plants coming again this year. {I order them, so I think they're good anyway}
Toofewanimals. I work at Oakwood.
Welcome Nancy!!! You are right about a nice, warm greenhouse!!
Nancy
I'll definately be at the BIBS sale again.
It's too bad that they don't have in a little earlier, but I guess the tradation has a lot to do with it. It's been on Memorial day Saturday for years.
I think it's probably one of the best sales in the state. A real variety of plants.
Paul
Ok, Ok....no brains here...what is BIBS..please...?????

Welcome Nancy,
I grew up in East Dearborn in the area of Warren and Schaeffer. I graduated from Fordson about a million years ago. :) Mom lived in Dearborn till I sold her house a couple years ago and she moved in with me. My husband and I lived in Garden City but have sold out and moved to Au Gres.
I'm glad you found your way to the Michigan forum. Lots of nice folks here.
Brenda
Brenda, I graduated from what we considered the rival school of Fordson, Lowrey High School.
I went to Lowrey for 8th grade before I went to Fordson. We had moved to Dearborn when I was just going into 8th grade. I used to live in Detroit over by MaKensey High School.
I went to Lowrey for 9th through l2th grades. I had to be bussed there from Dearborn Hgts.
Hi all I'v been reading A lot of your messages and find it all very interesting I live on Sanford lake I'm not sure a lot of you are familer whith the area. I.v seen some from Mt. Pleasent and Bay city but no one From Sanford or Midland? I'm going to put in a rose Garden this summer ( an old love) but I'm still reading about the best ones for a new love trying to grow them .I work a lot so I need to do something to just relax I'v grown Flowers all my life . but not as much as I'm doing as of the last few years. I'v always loved to play in the dirt and watch things grow. hope to get to know you all a little better as time goes by G
Paulgrow. I can't agree more about the date of the sale. I have tried often to have it earlier, before people have bought all their plants and planted them already. I have had no luck in changing it though.
For all the Dearbornites past and present. Lowery, where my kids graduated from is only elementary and junior high these days. Fordson is the high school for the east side. Underwent some major renovation a couple of years ago, added on to and the exterior sandblasted. It's still a very impressive looking school

Hi again, everyone! Had a rough coupla months, but with the arrival of several hundred (okay, maybe not that many) seed catalogs, I'm raring to go!!
We have "woods" that border 2 sides of our property. Over the 18 months since we've lived here, we've had several trees that have fallen. We want to preserve the woods (and our privacy) so we are going to replace the trees. We would also like to plant a "living" fence or hedge on our property line that we share with our neighbor. I was looking at plant catalog and Hybrid Willows ( salix hybrid) *look* perfect, but I'm afraid of planting something invasive. Does anyone have any experience with these? Or do you have a suggestion as to what to plant? It's fairly shady, clay soil. I'm looking for something fairly quick growing, but hardy. Not asking for much, lol!!
We have Virginia Creeper growing throughout our woods and honeysuckle...so I've got experience with TRYING to eradicate these invasive species.
Would have introduced myself before but I just noticed this thread (and I've only been officially a member for about a month).
I'm in Saint Clair Shores, by my own measurements (for the past 5 years) a solid zone 6a-b. I am a transplant having grown up in New England (RI to be specific). I've been in Mi for 9 years or so. (my family is now in Fl, as was I before moving to Mi) When I got married my wife was very into gardening, and I was interested in it for her sake. Now we've flipped places and she finds herself too busy to garden and I have yard control.
My gardening passions are edible plants and on my little 1/8th acre I have more fruits and edibles than I should (15+ kinds of berries as well as many trees and such). If its unusual and could possibly be grown in a zone 5, 6,7 garden (and edible) I've got it, tried it, killed it or researched it and might still be considering it. (though my wife wants to know where it could possibly go before I order it)
We;ve got two boys, a toddler and a teenager. Both of them think the yard is a pretty special place and each has their favorites.
My gardening goals for this year include, learning to graft and successfully grafting a few things (I've done all the research, I just need to find a demonstration) and I want to become a master gardener (spring, I hope). I'm a teacher (Sec. Math) so summers for me (prime gardening season) are when I'm happiest.
So, does BIBS ever have edibles? (actually I've found that my want lists have gotten so unusual that my options are quite limited in finding some of the items I wish to add.....has anyone seen anywhere offering orange fruited clove currants?)
~Chills
