Seed Snatchin' Part VI

Taylor Creek, FL(Zone 10a)

Yea, did ya?

Zion, IL(Zone 5a)

weez, it hurts to grin this much when I just came in !!!

Tamara - got any Yokohama squash? Read about them in the new Mother Earth News and got verrry hungry.

Rocky Mount, VA(Zone 7a)

I just read the same article. If anyone has seed to spare (Yokohama squash) - please let me know. Though the article lists only one seed source, I will look for sources also.

Taylor Creek, FL(Zone 10a)

Alright, what's so special about Yokohama squash? Why did Mother Earth News write about it? Do we all need some?
I have a strange looking gourd that has that long neck and duck-head look. I really need to drill a one inch hole in it to get the seeds out. I could still rent it to some bird that way.

Rocky Mount, VA(Zone 7a)

The "Mother Earth News" article is about the outstanding flavor of this veggie, growing & cooking it. I have just begun cooking and enjoying squash (a co worker gave me some from her garden last summer). I subcribe to one web site (this one) and one magizine (The Mother Earth News) & cannot praise either enough.
They are both outstanding. IMHO

I totally agree. The best flower garden book was ME's A to Z of Gardenig, or flowers?
I wish I would run across it, cause it's out of print. I recon I'll have to subscribe again too.

Fritch, TX(Zone 6b)

The yokohama squash? Does ME News have a site where I can read up on it? I would have to catch up at bedtime, now I will have to wait till tomorrow to get more info...

BTW, did I mention I rec'd (yep, delivered to the unloading zone) another pickup load of BAGGED leaves, this time with pine needles mixed in. I will save those for the potato beds, YIPEEE!

Look around, maybe you can still find that book, sugarweed...

Sweet snatchin' dreams to y'all!

Introduced from Japan back in the 1860's I think it said. It's a black bumpy skinned flat squash like a turbin squash and has dark orange meat, stores for a long time and supposed to be scrumptious! (can I say that? yeah... I'm thinking acorn squash, buttered and better).
A true squash in the pumpkin sense, they like to spread out and need some ramblin room.

I googled them and ended up here http://www.rareseeds.com/
They better be good and enjoy running through the perennial beds like the spaghettis squash did last year. Even though they're 'Rare', I hope they put more than 4 or 5 seeds in for that price.

Rocky Mount, VA(Zone 7a)

The ME article also gives instructions for saveing seed from :)

Zion, IL(Zone 5a)

I have a pack on the way which is supposed to contain 25-35 seeds. Way more than I'll need and of course, something like this you only have to order once.
dyson, sugarweed, tammarfaye.... interested in 5 or 6 seeds?

Taylor Creek, FL(Zone 10a)

You want an sase?

Zion, IL(Zone 5a)

nahhhh, just email me an addy and we'll call it square.

Of course whoever gets a crop needs to share seeds next fall. I think vine borers have satellite coverage of my piece of dirt!! I think the article said these squash are supposed to be more resistant to borers. I won't bank on it though.
I'd read forever how garlic is supposed to be a rabbit deterrent. Yeah right. Last year a big stupid bunny started a nest smack dab in the middle of my garlic bed!!! Mothball crystals down her hole sent her packing.

Taylor Creek, FL(Zone 10a)

You got it. You're a sweetheart. Why not add squash to my groundcovers. How much sun do they need? 3 seed ought to be plenty.
Pretty bad when you know the rabbits have been there by the smell of their breath.
I cant pay the birds to come to my feeder, but squrells are gettin about "pot" size.
Last hubby cooked me some to save money, that was a very short marriage.

Rocky Mount, VA(Zone 7a)

Please ........send I'll gladly help pay for the original order of seed. Just let me know what is needed.

Zion, IL(Zone 5a)

eeeehaww! finally find someplace that appreciates bibs-n-boots!
You know I cannot find the 'Liberty' brand up here? They are the ones made famous on Hee-Haw and my absolute favorites. I stocked up in WM the last time in FL and only have one new pair left in stock. I'm gettin' desperate.

Seward, AK(Zone 3b)

That's all we need... a desperate man in bibbies... if you drop the other strap, we're kickin you off the bus, 8ft.

Taylor Creek, FL(Zone 10a)

I live in libertys and carharts, Walmart does a big bib buy every so often and that is when you have to be ready for libertys. I just checked on line and wally has dickies stone wash. Here Libertys are at JCP's http://www4.jcpenney.com/jcp/Products.aspx?DeptID=0&CatID=015952&Grptyp=SIZ&ItemId=09fb9ec .
I saw some for women, but had an awful boxy looking model, I sure dont want to buy anything that makes me look like that. No fly, but didn't look to have the snap and zip bib pockets either. A MUST for us ladies.
The new ones have zip fly instead of button. They are never used, so I forget they are there. The buttons would hurt sometimes if I had to lay on them at work.
Oh to be in such pain again.

When I was younger and slimmer, I loved my bibbies. My DH wears black Carhart bibbies all the time. Here he is filling our bird feeders last spring.

Love those black ones, they say mine should have a red hour glass on the front, Don't know what to make of that.
Carhart denums are my Sunday bibs, or if I celebrate, (Like when I topped out as a journeyman.) I get a new pair to celebrate.
New slogan for them: "Carharts, as tough as the women who wear them!"
When I work in Ky I go to Linda's House of Carharts at Beaver Dam. Great 2nds and prices.
The inside of boilers is hard on them anyhow.

Zion, IL(Zone 5a)

weez you're killing me!

My grandfather wore bibs forever (hence my passion). Anyway, DM sent me a couple pair of his old ones after he passed. Yeah! So I'm in a well broken in pair, working hard in the yard, the neighbor comes over and next thing you know it's 2 hours and a sixpack later. Gotta go realllll bad ... one of those where you're doing the peepee dance. I get to the facilities all but losing it .... and couldn't get the fly open! Mom had worn them for awhile and had sewn the fly shut!! agghhhh, and both straps were up but I was all thumbs at that point, jumping and twitching.

true story and Weez if you get coffee out the nose, please let me know,

Sidney, you're a true find! I've googled them Liberties numerous times and could never find them.

added: Holy Cow them puppies are pricey... quality though!

I always buy 3 at a time for work. They must be washed before any hot metal or acid touches them. In other words before I can wear them. I put all three in washer, (I'm usually out of town) with 1 cup of Downy only, right from the wash cycle. Tumble dry, and they last for ever.
If you don't wash first, the finish promotes quick burn of clothes and turns plain water into acid, lol.

Sugar, You wash them with just Downy? Explain this one, Annie

Zion, IL(Zone 5a)

another cool Liberty trait - you can bleach them powder blue and that zipper stays Green!

Seward, AK(Zone 3b)

Here's a picture of me and my dad taken about 1950. You can see that bibbies were his uniform of the day. You could always tell when it was summer, cause Dad would take out his old pocket knife and cut the legs off those bibbies to make them into shorts. When the heat of August hit, he'd forgo shirt and whatever, just wearing the bibbie shorts with the sides unbuttoned for a little extra ventillation.

They just go into hot wash water with ONE cup of regular, not super-etc, Downy. No soap. This gets rid of the chemical "finish" they have out of the factory. Then machine dried, they are soft, and wrinkle free. They will last twice as long for me if I do this.

Taylor Creek, FL(Zone 10a)

Oh weeze, how many petticoats did you wear with that dress? Did they scratch?
Thats a very handsome Daddy there.
Here's yours truly in my carhart bibs with my best and favorite Christmas present, I luuuuuuuuuve
