Taylor Creek, FL(Zone 10a)

Well friends, I picked up pressure treated garden timbers, they were replacing with something else.
Dug up a flowering jasimine I've had for 7 years, vigorus, but no sweet smell. Otta here. When space is tight, it's produce or find a new home.
Right now I'm stalking my own Angel Trumpets, and Milk weed. I serged some cheese cloth bags for both. Sun is out now and so am I.

sugar, is that how you capture your seeds? If it is what a great idea, does it work better than nylons?? LOl

Sugarweed, don't you think the other plants are snickering and making bad jokes. He does look kinda silly with that thing hanging off him. Yes, it has been quiet here the last few days. I brought some turkey and dressing for a quick meal on the road... did I hear you guys groaning?? Hey, leftovers are leftovers.

Annie, just get the family up to snuff and the rest of us will stay close by til you're ready. Magpye, can't we just load up some of that fine Arkie 'farwood' in the back of the bus and head on down to your FIL's place... any good seeds down his way??

Cape Cod, MA(Zone 7a)

Magpye, I'm glad you posted that link- Starzz's garden is so fun and beautiful. Not to be missed!

I collected some wild milkweed pods, and I want to grow it in my garden somewhere, for the butterflies, does anyone know how to start it? I've sprinkled them about before, but nothing.

Seward, AK(Zone 3b)

Oceangirl, is it native to your area? If so, you might try to duplicate its germination methods in the wild. As I recall, milkweed has a fuzzy cotton seed top that carries it in the wind. If that is the case, maybe they don't like being covered very heavily with soil. Also, consider when the pods open and the seed escapes. That might tell you what sort of temperature changes the seed needs to make. You'd think it would be easy to start wild seeds in cultivation, but many of them have some pretty complex germination requirements that are on the menu in their habitat, but not in your garden.

Hi Oceangirl, they require cold stratification to break the embryo's dormancy. Actually, I've had good luck with them. I can share with you how I have been able to get them to germinate if you are interested? For right now, you might want to consider sticking your seed in your frig until you have the time to deal with it. Let me know or start a thread somewhere and get me the link. Probably preferable to do it that way as you'll get a bunch of gardeners to respond and then you can split up the seed and try germinating it a few different ways to see what works best for you.

Okay, okay. This thing is suppose to be about bein' a cleptobotaniac? Well here goes...

My DH and I got back early from our Thanksgiving day trip to our daughter's. This is a view of the club cab part when we got home. Only the brug cuttings inthe white cup are something I had given to me. The rest are part of my 'collection'.

Missed you all!! Hey Oceangirl - good luck on the milkweed - I do have one trade ready to go if you want it.. Let me know! It's orange milkweed..

Not much snatchin' going on here right now for me either - if anyone has any stories, details please!! I need a fix!

These were tucked in behind the passenger's seat.

HAHAHAHAHAHA!! Thanks!! I needed that~!

Castro Valley, CA(Zone 9a)

dstartz, gooood job!!!! We had our dinner here, and with family with the sniffles, I'm homebound, can't wait till the week starts, I'm taking the dag for a walk and my baggies will be for more than his disposal, lol

Seward, AK(Zone 3b)

I've spent the last couple days cataloging seeds in my tote. I've started a spreadsheet that I hope will make it easier later. I've got the seeds separated by the week I plant them (determined by my target date for setting out, counting backward). I've gone through the seeds from week 25 through week 14, and I've got almost 400 entries. I must be nuts or something. I'll never get all this stuff planted!

Things are pretty much past the point of collecting around here. I did score some pearl yarrow seed a few days ago, and I'm eyeballing some rose hips that are within reach without trudging through the snow. I can also check the goats beard again... should be about ready... and then there are the highbush cranberries... Gee! I guess I'm not done after all! Seeds are poppin', gee that's betta... mudda, fadda, kindly disregard this letta!

NW Qtr, AR(Zone 6a)

Ahh, Weez .. not cabin feva settin' in on ya... already -?- .. LOL ..

Zion, IL(Zone 5a)

how's this ?

Chauffered the DW up to Mellengers (sp) in Wisconsin to look at ornaments.
I immediately went to see if they were giving away the spring bulbs yet. No. Rats!!

Went nosing around the house plants and ended up by their workstation looking in the trash can. Aww man! There was some wilted plants they had tossed. I stood there and wondered if I'd get pinched. I dug out two prayer plants, all wilted but their dry little rootballs which were knocked out of the pots, were still intact. The garden lady came up and asked what I was doing. "Looking at the trash". She says "They're dead". NO THEY'RE NOT! "Ok" she says, "Take 'em"

Here they are after brushing off the dried potting soil and sitting in a jar of juice overnight.

8ft, those little prayer plants were just a prayin for someone to take them home. They'll always be grateful!

Castro Valley, CA(Zone 9a)

You know I've had one for about 3 years now, no matter how much I ignore it, it always comes back for me, folds up and back out again, so pretty, glad you saved it from other destiny!

Kannapolis, NC(Zone 7b)

Poor little feller!! Good job 8ft! Bold move too! :-)

Hey Weezingreens come catalog my seeds!! I have a bunch of seeds I'm getting ready to go out for SASE and I'm going to have to ask folks not to laugh at my packets!!! LOL

Nicole

Zion, IL(Zone 5a)

Nicole... are you recycling those goofs I sent you?

I invited tazzy over from a lily thread. She was dumpster diving behind a florist and put together a nice vase of flowers!

Kannapolis, NC(Zone 7b)

Come on Tazzy!!!

Hee hee! What I did was take my purchased seed packs from Office Depot and cut and tape them with masking tape! They don't look pretty but they're functional! Now I just need to get something printed up with plant info... Still have some cleaning to do though! I didn't realized how many seeds I had - I have 49 packs of Castors - and 40 of Rudbeckia! That's not all either!! I believe I will be busy busy when I get this started!! Don't worry about yours though 8ft - I have 'em put back! :-)

Seward, AK(Zone 3b)

Yes, with snatching comes the tedious stuff like drying, cleaning, packaging and keep track of all that stuff. My collection is waaaaay past the 'I'll go take a look' stage. I have 16 2-gallon ziplock bags in my tote, so taking a look for something could take hours. Besides, when it comes time to order seeds, I can trim my enthusiasm back a bit if I know what I already have. Why, I've got my T&M order whittled down to under $50! LOL!

Where is that Tazzy... dust off a lawn chair and look presentable so we don't scare her away!

Zion, IL(Zone 5a)

I finally opened a coffee can last night that's been sitting patiently on a light rack waiting for me to turn it back on and start filling shelves again.

Various zinnia and larkspur packs ordered last winter. THERE's that green love-lies-bleeding I was looking for and another pack of Aunt Ruby's German green tomatoes. Along with cigar vials of 1 -3 year old seeds of different types. I'm trying not to order ANY seeds this winter. Well, except for the tomatos that have already arrived.

Pocola, OK(Zone 7a)

You better not visit the seed trading forum then. ;-) I keep saying "no more" and then I see something I think I might want. Too hard to resist.

Seward, AK(Zone 3b)

Cherishlife, I think I've got an 'assigned seat' at the seed trading forum! The only thing that saves me from trading with everybody there is that I can't grow many of the seeds others have to offer. It is both a pity and a godsend! LOL! Part of my task is to start weeding out the seeds I cannot grow here and give them away.... so that I can trade some more! Besides, I've got to make room for next year's 'snatchin'!

Pocola, OK(Zone 7a)

LOL Didn't I see you say somewhere that you had over 400 varieties of seeds? I now have over 150, but who's counting? I've got them listed in my spreadsheet like you do and when I see something I might want, I have to go check and make sure I don't already have it. My next project is to start going through it and figuring out what needs to be stratisfied.

Seward, AK(Zone 3b)

CL, I'm not really sure how many different varieties I have. I'm cataloging them by Family, Genus, species or cultivar, etc. I'm group all the commercial seed for any cultivar together... say, Lemon Drop Marigold, as one entry, but if it is collected seed, I'm listing it separately with a notation, since I can't really count on these seeds being true to the cultivar. As of last night, I'm on bag 13, counting down to bag 1, and I'm almost at the 500 entries mark!

Of course, I've got all my seed snatching seeds listed separately... such as this:

Family: Solanaceae
Genus: Petunia
Species: unknown
Cultivar: Wells Fargo Community Garden
Bloom Color: Purple

Considering my seed snatching addiction, this sort of seed makes up a big part of my collection! LOL!

Pocola, OK(Zone 7a)

Carol, are you using Excel?

Castro Valley, CA(Zone 9a)

I still have sooo many bags and envelopes to go thru, I hope people take a lot of my hands, I hate to trow them away, I wish I had the room like some of ya so I could just broadcast them, Now that I have the disease, seed disease, I just get upset if some fall on the floor, lol. I'ts suppose to be in the 20's tonight, think I'll have to find me that hotpad, these old bones are achy brakey tonight!

Moab, UT(Zone 6b)

Hanna, off the subject of the salvation of seeds... Isn't 20's a bit cooler than the norm? for your area, I mean?

Seward, AK(Zone 3b)

CL, yes I'm using Excel. Someone else suggested using Access, but I'm not sure how to go about it. I bought the program but I've never used it.

Kannapolis, NC(Zone 7b)

Me too Hanna! I found 4 Echinacea seeds in my chair last night - now if I just knew which variety they were! :-)

Pocola, OK(Zone 7a)

I don't know anything about Access but I absolutely LOVE my Excel. Using the Data Form feature makes it really easy to add stuff to my list.

Kannapolis, NC(Zone 7b)

I like Excel myself... Just wish I didn't have to use it so much at work!! LOL BUT that has helped me in my gardening endeavors...

Nicole
