Seed Snatchin' Part IV

LOL

So, what should the definition be? And should I take this to another thread? (Don't want to take this one over....)

dstartz- I'll buy one of those t-shirts!

I can't believe it! Here I thought I got the opportunity of a life time by gettin in on the "ground floor" over at the dump and Weeze already had a "standing order in at the dump for old window blinds". Well, weeze... here I thought I was the ultimate Queen of the dumpsters. Do you have any other tricks of the trade that you didn't share? I thought I was so clever gosh darnit!

Seward, AK(Zone 3b)

I've been sorting through my seed tote, since I can't fit any more seeds in until I get rid of some. I noticed that I've been raiding the same places for the last three years! It's a wonder they don't have a 'see you next year' sign waiting for me at some of these places! I get Mountain bluet seeds from the old information cache rail car, wild geranium seeds from the Lutheran church, and some others I can't recall. Some of these folks must view me as the harbinger of autumn... "ah, there's the old fat gal takin' seeds off our plants...must be the end of the season".

We are pretty lucky here in Seward. Our waste disposal is free if you haul it yourself. You can even take truckloads of stuff to the back of the dump without charge. Of course, once in the back, you can empty the truck and fill it back up while you are there. I've found lots of good timbers and concrete blocks for landscaping there. I also scored some of those old heavy galvy garbage cans for compost. I've begun carrying token trash for the back just so I have a reason to go there! LOL!

Castro Valley, CA(Zone 9a)

Weez, my kinda gal, sure wish we could do that here, darn it, they watch you, charge you, it's a one way deal!!!

Cape Cod, MA(Zone 7a)

sorry guys. I was at work all day yesterday, we did a leaf cleanup, been doing them all week, and by the time I got home my daughter and grandkids were over for dinner. Then DH wanted someone to talk to. When he fell asleep I snuck down to the puter and started writing a long embellished tale for all of you, and then my word program shut down (i used word in case I fell asleep- boy I was tired, so I could work on it a little at a time) and my word program shut down with an error and I lost the whole thing!
so, short and sweet : We needed gas at the end of the day, and the truck was almost full. We have to lift the bed to put in gas, but didn't want to lift it too much because of the weight on the bed, and the tools might fall out. so we didn't realize the nozzle was loose and we were trying to pump gas uphill! So it alll ran down my arm and all over the pavement!

I love the T shirt idea! I want one!

I have to go off to work now. ;)

Kannapolis, NC(Zone 7b)

Uck Cindy!!!

Hey 8ft - I would be a Snatchin' at your house if I were closer! :-)

YES, count me in on the t-shirts!!! I have a ton of t-shirts but this would be one I would WANT to wear!! LOL

Wonder if we could get Dave to let us put the DG logo on it somewhere's? It would be kind of neat since we 'met' here! I bet he would if the proceeds went to the Garden Angel Fund like you said Dstartz!!!!

Keep us posted... Wish I were creative but I think we will have that part covered by the other Clepto's!!!
Nicole

Taylor Creek, FL(Zone 10a)

I'd like for Dave to approve of a fund raiser shirt that says "ask me about Dave's Garden" with his Logo on it. Could she print that? I have never met a stranger (therefore, they won't even let me in NYC). I can't help but tell any garden shopper about DG.
I try not to follow them around the store though.

Kannapolis, NC(Zone 7b)

HAHAHAHA!!!!

My friends and family roll their eyes at me anymore b/c gardening and DG are usually in the same sentence!!

How about tank tops and golf shirts? I could wear the golf shirts to work!!

Merced, CA(Zone 9a)

Donna, I was playing with that the other day and thought about a dumpster with Cleptobotanics on the front of it, full of plants, flowers and stuff. My son and I do graphics for a living, too, can we help/play? Soooo many ideas, not enough tee shirts!

Kannapolis, NC(Zone 7b)

Well, I would just like to say thank you to the local Post Office here in Ft. Mill, SC for the Butterfly Weed seeds! Pretty plant too! Should have gotten more but I was a bit of a chicken!

Hey, but they OWE me big time....

Nicole

Taylor Creek, FL(Zone 10a)

I'll be thru there in a few weeks, did you leave anything?

Kannapolis, NC(Zone 7b)

In Ft. Mill? Wow! I could have left you some Coleus cuttings except for the MAN who threw them away as I drove to the post office today! I couldn't get stopped b/c of traffic.. I did drive around to the dumpster on the way back though but have no tools and since many of my co-workers eat at that restaurant I thought - NA! Dumpster divin' is cool but I don't think they would understand!!! LOL

Taylor Creek, FL(Zone 10a)

I'm good for coleus,

Kannapolis, NC(Zone 7b)

Think you might be right about that!! :-)

Kannapolis, NC(Zone 7b)

hmmmm.... This plant is growing in the lobby of my company..

http://davesgarden.com/pdb/go/1770/index.html

It appears that you can only reproduce is by seeds and/or cuttings. The one we have DOES bloom occasionally.. Worthy of a snatch maybe? The only real problem is the height is a LITTLE much for my house. LOL

Course the challenge - hmmmm

Seward, AK(Zone 3b)

sugarweed, what a beautiful display of coleus! Good thing you've got that killer toad watching over it! Do they bite? (note to self...buy shin guards)

Taylor Creek, FL(Zone 10a)

Weeze, he was formerly known as prince. He's fallen on hard times.

Kannapolis, NC(Zone 7b)

Poor fellar!! Well I had to escape up to the 'pooter room. Youngin is with Mam Maw and my IDEA was to sit on the deck with the dogs and clean seeds.

Wellll... cleaning seeds with a Rottweiler panting over your shoulder and trying to get in your lap is well,,,, frustrating to say the least!! If I had Sun under the deck there would be an awful lot of Rudbeckias growing there next year!!! Then my mix was in a panic to get back into the house and I couldn't figure out why. She left her ball in the kitchen!! Anyway, they are out and here I am in peace...

Well now sounds like my son is home!!

More snatchin later...

Cape Cod, MA(Zone 7a)

sugarweed, ooooh, ahhhh, nice coleus!

Came home today with a grocery bag full of goodies: 5-6 rooted (layered) Annabelle Hydrangeas
7-8 Caryopteris (sp?) babies and tons of seeds for Caryopteris.
A good day at work!

Here's me when I wasn't seed snatching...

I would love it if you would do it! I really like the idea "dumpster with Cleptobotanics on the front of it, full of plants, flowers and stuff"

Got anything we can see?? Please?

I'll have to order 2 so I have a clean one to wear after working on my seed and cutting collections....

Seward, AK(Zone 3b)

oceangirl, nice blower!

Oceangirl... forget the blower! Gorgeous home and gorgeous view!

Kannapolis, NC(Zone 7b)

I second that!! WOW - now we know where your screen name comes from!! I vote we start the Snatchin' tour at her house!! LOL

As soon as we get our t-shirts of course!

Nicole

Taylor Creek, FL(Zone 10a)

Looks like the best place for me too. But it might be a little chilly right now. We could work our way quickly south. Nicole thats why I left NC.

Kannapolis, NC(Zone 7b)

OK - so we start at your place and work our way to the colder areas when it's summer!!! Deal?

Taylor Creek, FL(Zone 10a)

More better.

Zion, IL(Zone 5a)

I stumbled across a quote in one of my programming manuals this morning. A pretty good description of why I drive very slow when leaving the sub division on trash day as I inspect all offerings on the curb...
~~~~~~~
A rock pile ceases to be a rock pile the moment a single man contemplates it,
bearing within him the image of a cathedral.
---Antoine de Saint-Exupery
~~~~~~~

Snatchers and Divers - what do YOU see in front of McDonald's where the marigolds are all blackened by frost with little splashes tan marking all the drooping seed heads... ??

Taylor Creek, FL(Zone 10a)

Gotcha 8ft.

My family just shakes their heads when we're driving somewhere and I give out a 'Hey!' or an 'Oooo.'. They know what's coming next........

Zion, IL(Zone 5a)

Concur! Just making that 'Ooooh' sound makes them start telling me NO and shrinking in the seat like I'd gotten out and took a big dump in the middle of the road.

Of course seeing a good rock makes my head snap and my foot reach for the brake as well.

Kannapolis, NC(Zone 7b)

My DH was rolling his eyes at me when we took my DS to a Thomas the Train event this summer.. Here we were on a moving train and I'm telling him - remember that spot!! We have to go back there!!! Course we didn't get to but I did get some of their Crape Myrtle seeds!! LOL

BY the way... I JUST did my most brazen snatch. In our cafeteria we have planters with various house plants in them. I happened to be sitting by a nice variegated plant and 'accidentally' broke off a stem... Poor thing! It just wouldn't be fair to throw it away for my mistake now would it??? So it's sitting on my desk!! Will be taking it home this weekend and will take a pic. Maybe someone can tell me what it is.. It already has a root nub on it's side so the poor little fellar needed to get outta there anyway!! My manager was in the cafeteria so I showed it to him and told him 'bout my 'accident' he just laughed his head off!

Seward, AK(Zone 3b)

Seward has wonderful rocks, though we often take it for 'granite'. You can pick up shale along roadsides, round creekbed rocks from the rivers, and flat sided rock from areas where it is used as rip-rap. You see folks stopped along the roads picking it up all the time. My son goes four-wheeling and brings back wonderful river rocks with streaks of white quartz an mica. Don't get me started on rocks... that's a whole new thread! Here's one of our raised beds using rocks.

Kannapolis, NC(Zone 7b)

Carol - I too collected many of AK's rocks on my visit. One is a big smooth rock found at the ocean's shore. When we were leaving to get on the plane I was asked about my suitcase. "What's in here? ROCKS?" To which my reply was, "YES!" lol

The big one sits on my front porch for fondling...

Castro Valley, CA(Zone 9a)

Had to go back to Kaiser yesterday, and right there in front where these very pretty purple mums needed deadheading, Welllll, I took care of business, came back out, took my snips out right in front of this lady sitting on the bench in front of it, bent down, she laughed with joy as she excaimed, gosh I do that all the time too, lol lol, sooo, I said, come join us on DG, LOL LOL
Want T-shirts, oh yes indeede, count me in for sure, dumpter et all....

Kannapolis, NC(Zone 7b)

By the way ladies and gents... In my new issue of Better Homes and Gardens they have an ad for -as they call it- a 'harvesting' kit you can purchase with bag, gloves, snippers, etc. The thing sells for $220!! No self confessed Snatcher would throw precious plant money away on something you can do yourself for WAAYY less!

Kannapolis, NC(Zone 7b)

Good service you did there Hanna!! Poor mums - their owner should be ashamed!

Merced, CA(Zone 9a)

NC, you are getting baaad. Are we also rock all collectors? Crossing the state lines with them PILED under our seats...wondering if someday we are going to be arrested.

I was at the doc's the other day, a little stressed and went for a walk, talking to someone on the phone. Oh, seeds! Oh, all over the place. Both of my huge jacket pockets were stuffed to the brim when I went back inside to wait in the room with my daughter. No tissue, no baggies, caught totally off guard here. You know those rubber gloves in dispensing boxes? Perfect!! I used those and filled one to the brim! Walking out later through the lobby with that was interesting. The looks I got. My daughter wanted to die.

Now all I have to is ID them!!

I will go get a picture of a dumpster asap if someone doesn't already have one, a complete picture? I can take out anything else in the pic, no problem. Anyone? Equil, that pretty blue one will work....have a complete pic of it somewhere? Ours are NOT pretty.

Seward, AK(Zone 3b)

NC, I always like to pick up a rock or two in my travels. They seem to be different everywhere you go.

Kannapolis, NC(Zone 7b)

I agree! We want a pretty dumpster! Sounds like you got yourself a great haul there Ladyannne!!!

Castro Valley, CA(Zone 9a)

The three of us are super ROCK-HOUNDS, down south, my DH would come home from the field and his truck would be full of great large smooth river-rocks, I bordered all of our planters with them, was an arborious job, and made for the most beautifull looking planters, the last time we collected was at a river running down the giant Redwoods of Norhtern Cali, I can't wait for the next expedition!!! We look for form, color and stratiation, remember DH is a Geologist (Paleonthologist), sooo perfect as I've been collecting rocks since I was a little wee thing! and shells, and beach glass, and especially Fossils, yeppie....
