Beautiful, Delicate Morning Glorys Cont. #3

Kentwood, LA(Zone 8b)

Gorgeous blooms Dee. I hope you get some seed from your chocolate mg. Mine didn`t do as well this year as it did last year.

Willoughby, OH(Zone 5a)

Here is another of the HUGE lavender-pink blooms from the e-bay seed I call "Kyoko Pink". The seller just called them" japanese pink morning glory". Anybody have any ideas on the real identity of this mystery beauty?

Here is another picture...although it is much more delicate in color than my camera indicates

Can't resist posting this close up of "Henka"

golgi I don't know what the pink one is but they are both really pretty.

The pink looks like it has a lot of lavendar shading in it?

The "henka" is reall nice, that blue just jumps out at you.

Keep those photos coming ladies, I sure have been enjoying them!

Jones Creek, TX(Zone 9a)

Golgi, on your pink the first one that came to mine was one that Laurrie (ohiobreezy) put in the database, called Wedding Bells. Check it out it looks pretty close to me. Hummmm, that blue one is awesome.....save me some seed of that one toooo.........

WW and Golgi, very nice glories..

This is another flower from Tye Dye Pink (2nd pot) but same pack of seeds from Parks. This has ruffles and layers, about 4 1/2 inches across and is just gorgeous. What a surprise pack of seeds this has been. Anyone know this one, also is there a site you all go to for IDing glories?

Here's a chocolate, second bloom, but I am not a good photogapher.. it looks so small compared to the one above. I set them side by side to photograph.. As they start to bloom, I will post them... some of my seeds were sown on July 8, so there is still awhile for mine to do something.. hopefully the weather will permit some blooms and better yet, some seeds..lol

golgi, your blooms are really pretty....There are a few of us who bought those same pink ones from ebay. I did not grow mine out this year but maybe Laurrie or Donna can lend an ID.

gourd, I am enjoying all your blooms, you have quite a collection going there. I really like that pink one, are there any streaks on it? I am unable to view the enlarged view for some reason....

My new bloomers from the sun mix......

gourd, those two pinks (streaked and nonstreaked) are they on the same vine?

Cassopolis, MI(Zone 5a)

Hi moon
I have 4 children I could trade you for 4 seeds of that blue silk. That is the one that got me into the whole mg thing!!!! They are all adults and pretty hard working!!!!
They pretty much take care of themselves!!!!! Well they work hard, maybe I better not lie!!!!

I must say its a toss up for me between the blue silk and that wisteria tye dye.
I am not sure which one I drool over more!!!!!

Mesilla Park, NM

Oh I love that Blue Silk... gotta have...

Moon, no they are not on the same vine, I planted more seeds out of the same pack into another two pots (total 3 pots) because they did not germinate, so I thought they were goners and planted more. little did I know that they took a long time to germinate. Now, I have three pots, with three different types of flowers.. This is the other pot (from the same pack of seeds)..

WW, I have four grandchildren and two grown children that I can throw into the pot for that one.. WOW

I am just worried that seeds won't start forming over here.. does anyone know how long from bloom to seed? I have been keeping a log, but it is my first year, so I don't know poopoo yet.. two, three, four, five weeks, does anyone know? Some of mine are now starting to hold the stem and pods are starting to form, but it seems like the first few blooms/stems just fall off..
'
no luck on Mt. Fuji yet.. they are still falling off.

Jones Creek, TX(Zone 9a)

This is how this one starts out and it's a toss up as to weather it will open or not. I think it will get better, this is the exact same way Shibouri did and then it straighten out and has been blooming fine ever since so I guess that may be a trait of the Shibouris...

Alice and Gourd, you are a hoot!....lol.

Gourd, I really like those pink ones, whatever they are. I am inclined to say that the streaked ones are the tie die. The solid one could develop streaks somewhere down the line as it continues to bloom but if it doesn't then it could be a mix matched seed. After a bloom falls off it will take a couple of days to start seeing a pod where the bloom was - as long as the stem part remained intact on the vine. If the flower did not pollinate it will turn yellow and fall off. I do know that heat plays a factor in the pod formation on the JMG - some stems will fall off just because it is just too hot. Different varieties vary on how fast the pods will ripen. Most of my JMG take a couple weeks to brown...

WW, I think we are all drooling over that wisteria one!!!!!!!!!

Moonlighting, that Blue Silk with the iridescent surface is amazing. Beautiful picture. Is there a permanent archive for such things? I'd hate to see it vanish when the thread ages out.

I just bought two big pots of blooming Japanese-looking morning glories, advertised at the nursery (western Suffolk County, Long Island) as "Mt. Fuji Morning Glories." One pot has cobalt blue, purple, and red-purple flowers, spoked-and-picoteed with white (the purple are just spoked). The other pot has lighter blue and pink shades with white spokes. I was able to bring a few into work yesterday by putting them in a plastic drink pitcher (no water) with a snug lid, along with some gladioli. The cobalt blue lasted well into the afternoon.

From packaged seed, I've also got Flying Saucers and some Blue Star and Heavenly Blue. And Grandpa Otts, self-sown and unstoppable.

What's the best way to collect seed from the Japanese morning glories, store it, and plant it next year? Is there any way of keeping the Otts genes from swamping the more delicate varieties? Should I try (whispering) to get rid of Otts, or will everything be all right even if I let him be?

Thanks for the beautiful pictures, everybody. I need to learn how to do that. Is there such a thing as an inexpensive digital camera that produces pictures like moon's?

Willoughby, OH(Zone 5a)

We are going to have to crack open Rogets Thesaurus to fing some new adjectives for the pictures!!
Moonlighting I HAVE to have some seed of that blue Silk. It hurts my heart.Dawnsharon, you addressed some of my same concerns about saving seeds when you have more than 1 variety groing near each other. How do you prevent crossing?

Needville, TX(Zone 9a)

Dawn, thanks for the comp on my picture - sometimes they come out decent. You sound like you are well on your way to MG growing. For me I collect my seed when the pods turn brown on the vine. I continue to let them dry for about another week before I seal them up in a baggie, put them in my seed box to be grown out the following year. There are several different ways to prevent crosses from occuring between vines. I think the only foolproof way it to tape the buds shut before a natural pollinator has dibbs at them thus preventing a cross pollination. I also don't mass my vines together.

Kentwood, LA(Zone 8b)

Dee, Please Pretty Please save me a seed from the purple speckeled one.

Jones Creek, TX(Zone 9a)

And look how they are opening this morning, oh my gosh, really this photo does not even do them justice.

This flower is about 4 and a half to five inches across. This is something that dosn't show up when they were not opening all the way, the fact that they are a larger flower. They don't seem to be really delicate either, so I would say they are gonna be some nice ones to have. :)

WOW,Dee,gorgeous!
For all of us who have unnamed varieties of morning glories, such as the ones purchased off of e-bay,I have e-mailed a professor of biology in Japan, and asked for his help. I will keep my fingers crossed. I am also going to e-mail the head of an "Asagao Society" in Japan. They have morning glory clubs over there, like we have rose societies.Hope we can get these flowers a NAME! Any of you that have an unidentified MG that you planted from seed....not a volunteer or mutant that crossed in your own yard,e-mail me .and we can get together a photo gallery of sorts .
Sound like an idea?

Dee, here is the label in Japanese if you want to enter that one into the plant data base

Oops, will have to ask Dave about enabling Japanese Characters

OC, CA & Twin Lakes , IA(Zone 4b)

It is too time consuming for Dave to write the program to use Japanese Characters.
If anyone wants them for correspondence to Japan I can email them in a word document to you and you can use that to correspond.

Dee, that morning glory is beyond believable. It is beautiful.

Needville, TX(Zone 9a)

Interesting flower golgi.....that feathering makes it look very elegant. Good luck to you on getting someone to respond to your ID's. No one ever acknowledged my emails from their clubs. I just figured they had no way to decipher my english.

Arlene, is what you have a program or just a document for conversion?

My Blue Silks are not doing to well at setting seed....I think it is just too hot right now. Cooler weather is on it's way tho.

Jones Creek, TX(Zone 9a)

Hi Arlene, was wondering where you got off to, glad to hear from you again and thanks for the info. I got the information you had written on the package and entered that in the Database when I put the flower in. I think I did it right I will have to go back and look, I may have the name switched.....
If you have additional info I would love to have it....

Thanks Sylvia, I am so glad you like it....this one is a real treasure........

golgi, that sounds wonderful, I hope we can get more named and of course I hope we can get more seeds for next year of some we don't have....
Keep us posted..........

Is this thread begining to load slow? If so I can start another and we can keep going?
