Beautiful, Delicate Morning Glorys Cont. #3

Mesilla Park, NM

It has been so hot here, again at 107-110 for the last week.. the buds that I had taped shut and even some that I did not tape are not staying on Mt. Fuji... they are just turning yellow and falling off. Is it the heat, or is it that they don't produce seeds when they are store purchased? I am hoping that they stay on when the weather cools off some. I don't even know if this one plant will bloom again.

Laurrie, that bloom lasted into the night, it was still open at 10 PM.. had moved the pot into the shade. I am hoping that the buds stay on long enough to form seed pods.

I also love that ShWisteria, but Umi "Sea" gets me every time.. as far as the blues go.

Lynnwood, WA(Zone 8a)

What a suprise! #30 bloomed yesterday. 5" (left)
Everybody had flowers yesterday, I think the rain storm last weekend must have helped, maybe I haven't been watering enough. (right)

Gourd, every bloom I have taped or covered in any way has fallen off. I think I'm gonna let nature take over.

gardenrocker the blooms will fall off after a day or so weather you tape them or not. The reason you tape them shut is to keep insect from pollinating them with another varitety. So if you don't have others around (I think the rule of thumb is and correct me if I'm wrong you experts out there, 100ft) don't tape them at all.
I dont' tape most of mine, the no beni and Izumi should be intresting to say the least next year since they were planted in the same pot. This was not intentional but due to critters moving some plants, I put a Izumi in the No Beni pot intending to move it that afternoon. Well I forgot it for several days and when I remember I didn't know which was which so I had to leave it alone.
So I should have some mix breeds next year and I hope they are pretty and that we all like them..
I just pulled up my intire patch of Star of Yelta so the rest of my Umi "Sea" would be pure and I would know for sure that they are. The Yeltas were just to close and since I don't know for such they don't cross I just didn't want to take a chance with ruining that one.
This is also a test, since I have many that are planted close and I do mean close if they don't cross then that would mean that they don't cross as easy as we have been lead to belive. The other thing is I don't have alot of bees and bugs that are good pollinators. So we will see, time will tell. Some of you that do have some good pollinators may have to do some testing to and see just how well do they cross and what crosses can we come up with.
I did do some deliberiate crosses and didn't have to much success only one seed pod for sure and that was a No beni and Izumi. I have it saved to plant next year and see what I get.
My Morning Glory year is just about wrapped up I only have maybe 4 more I am waiting on to bloom and I will be done for the year. I am getting a pretty good return of seeds and I hope to have some to share in the coming year.

Gourd, I had several bloom yesterday, go outside today, only to find they are still there! We had overcast day yesterday and it rained all night, this one is in a pot and under the eaves of the house, so it didn't get battered from the rain!! It is Matsukaze, the 2 blooms that look pink are the ones from yesterday and the blue one is from today!!

Remember my Cardinal Climbers? I put them on a 45 degree netting on a sliding hill, it worked! From a distance they float in the air and I have a maximum view of them.

This is a face-on shot. I see a combo of both shots from my bedroom window. It covered that area with color!

Laurri, those colors look so pretty together. Really neat.

Sylvia, I was really surprised they stayed open all day yesterday and still were wide open today, some of these Japanese ones really do impress me!

I don't have a name for this one, thinking it is Umi "sea" but not positive, anyone else out there growing it?
Thanks ~ Laurrie

Yep, thats what it looks like to me to but, a mutation since it has streakes.
I know there is one in the Sunrise Mix that looks like it to but I think it is the same thing. I think the Sunrise Mix is seeds that were left overs that no one knew what they were so they threw them in a pot and gave them a name. And that's probably what happend with a lot of the other mixes. .

LOL I would have to say I agree totally with you Dee, I have that mix and it has kaori, Yoso-oi, Umi Sea, Izumi, and another one so far that resembles Hatsu Arashi, I really love this mix, but am glad I have them in different pots so I can bag and tag them LOL

Look what arrived in Japan! It took over two months. She was thrilled! Thank you, my special friends, for helping out with this. I will be willing to bet that the potatoe chips got crushed to crumbs.

Now I am anxious to here what her favorites are. Sorry for the hijack.

She has some nieces and co-workers who will be helping her sample everything.

Wow Laurrie, those are so pretty.. I just love those colors. I am surprised at how long they stay open, here too, I am finding them open the next morning.

TLC, you too, WOW... what a haul.. What are those edibles?

Here is Hattie Bell today in the sun, I missed a couple of blooms yesterday..

Hattie Bell in the shade, don't know if the color is different or not, it is a lavender looking color in person ... that is one thing about the container growing, you can move them around. Also, make sure if you plant in containters, that they are at least the 2/3 gallon size.. some of mine in the one gallon need lots of watering... so, I learned a lesson there.

this one is from a trade with a lady from China.. she just sent small pictures of the flowers.. this pot has two different plants and not one looks like the flower one the photo. The dark flower closed before I got to take a photo of last week. This is the light colored one in the same pot and I took the photo inside the house this morning. It is really light and will post a photo of one outside.

Here it is outside.. does anyone know it's name?

This one is Red Rose and is about the same size as the light one above. 2 to 2 1/2 inches across.

Does anyone know what this one is? It really is pretty, light blue.. white seeds.

These are volunteers and look just lovely... lots of pinks today.

Mt Fuji bloomed a couple of times this week, and also a Pink Tie Dye tried to open, but it looked deformed.. This coming week should be interesting around here. These three that I planted in March.... are just starting to get some buds..

Heian no Kagayaki
Heian no Yoso oi
Heian no Izumi

Rose Silk has a big bud, hopefully will open tomorrow.

These are more volunteers in the backyard. More pink...

They are all nice, but I like the pink. I don't know how you do it in your heat out there. I'd be fried trying to keep everything watered.

Mesilla Park, NM

Hi Brugie, I keep them all in one area.. Hattie Bell is one of your seeds.. Here is a photo of them.. Top row is all seeds from you. Have about 50 pots around the tree. This is a priority watering area..lol.

Very clever what a color show you will have! This is something I came up with to hide a ugly corner

They are all lovely gourd. You must be having a good time seeing all of the blooms finally!

Mesilla Park, NM

monterey, I love those cardinal climbers, I had one planted last year in a five gallon pot that had a tree in it, and it was gorgeous. It became a jungle vine, this year, I only got one small plant and it just won't take off and has had a couple of blooms, maybe when the weather cools down a bit it will start to grow.

Citrus Heights, CA(Zone 9b)

This is what the corner looked like. This is the back of the Cardinal Climbers.

Hi jack away, I am so glad to see all she got and I am so glad she was pleased. This make me so happy that we could do this for them, something we take for granted ment so much to them. I hope we can do more in the future..........
Great big smile here......:o)

I really enjoy seeing how innovative you all are with your gardening. It is truly inspiring.

Here is mine. A seventy mile an hour storm knocked it over; DH got more rebar and
set it back upright and it is still blooming!

Here is a fun idea, our favorite way to grow morning glories. Any color works, but there's something about the blue on yellow.......seems so inviting :-)

Laurrie, you have some really beatuies there....I think that blue one is umi "sea"....

Gourd, looking good gal!! I really like that Hattie Bell....

MMS, I really like that color combo! I have heard of ppl growing mg's with sunflowers....now I have finally seen it :o)

Jones Creek, TX(Zone 9a)

Well Gourd I am still trying to ID your MG's from your post earlier this morning hopefully someone will come along and get it. I know there are some like it in the Zeeland Hybrid Mix (Burpee Seed) so it has a name somewhere. That is begining to bug me, the seed Companies are selling choice seeds in these Mixes and they are un named. We are paying top dollar for them thru e-bay and other places but you can buy them and get a whole collection with a mix if you are willing to have someone help you find out what they are.
I know in this Zeeland Hybrid Mix, I am looking at Milky Way, Rose Red, Red Star, Red Ramber, Pearly Gates, and a couple I don't recognize that are really pretty too. Heck next year I'm gonna clean Wal-Mart out on all there Mix packages when they come in cause I know Sunrise Mix has a lot of the Japanese MG's in it that we are growing now......and check out this one from Ferry Morse, I didn't get any of them planted this year wonder how big some of them are and how pretty as well as hardy they are, I will find out next year. These are from Wal-Mart to....That pink one in there sort looks like the one Arlene was trying to ID earlier this year.
:o)

This is a Picture of the Zeeland Hybrid Mix I mentioned in the last thread I posted. So if you look at the flowers you can see the ones I names and you can tell that the seed companies sweeped the floors after filling packets with what ever ones they did that week and then made up the Mix packets.
Not that I care I think it's Ok I just wish they would put the name of what is in the packet on the back of the package......I thought I saw Crimson Ramber on here but I don't think it is here, do yall see it?.........LOl
:o)
Dee

Some of these are really pretty tooo.......wow how did I miss them, I have about 3 of these packets too.....

WW, I know what you mean, have the packet above from FM, and I think Target still has all their seeds, lots of MGs too. They carry Burpee I think.. will stop by and check it out.

Here is Rose Silk today (seed from Pudgiemudpies).. It looks like the color of hot chocolate..it is so gorgeous.

one more of Rose Silk for sizing.

This is Tie Dye Blue, from Parks pack... although it sure looks purple in person.

Thumbnail by Gourd
Mesilla Park, NM

This was supposed to be Tie Dye Pink, but maybe the next blooms with show the stripes. Also from Parks pack.

Thumbnail by Gourd
Mesilla Park, NM

This is supposed to be Double Pink (from a trade) it is anything, but double.. it is a very small, very pretty pink.. about 2 inches across. I like it.

Thumbnail by Gourd
Mesilla Park, NM

And of course, some more volunteers.... these are purple with one pink.

Thumbnail by Gourd
Jones Creek, TX(Zone 9a)

The pink could still be a tye dye so don't give up yet, and it is pretty no matter what it is. In time we will get all ID'd so I am not concerned with that. I like all the ones you have growing they all have something that is pretty. How are they holding up as far as heat and blooms in this weather?
:o)
Dee

Mesilla Park, NM

WW, they are all doing very well, the only one that is closing real quick, even in the shade (by 11:00 started closing), is the one that is the unknown from the China trade. Some seem to struggle opening up and have tears in them.
