Such Lovely Plants!
"beautiful, delicate MG continued"
I made that so I could be mobile. I could move it where I wanted to. I have some japanese MGs cooking and maybe will do the same with them.I think I could get a 15gal nursery pot, put in a centerstick screwed in and braced and use tomatoe cages in a sculptured effect. I would put in the first and use the base of the next to join the two and on up, How big of a vine does a japanese MG get? I knew for the saucers I would need a strong structure.I also have Cardinal Climbers going. They are on a floating net. I have Two pots on the bottom, with a third going in on the ledge above and to the right. They will climb up and down. The net is on a 45 degree line. They will appear to just be there from a distance when they are full grown.
Kathy Ann, your mg might not have blooms, but at least it's growing. Out of the 6 different Japanese MG's I sowed from the co-op and from Ebay, only 2 different ones came up. I planted them in April, and they are still only about 3 in. tall. Usually mg's grown like Jack-in-the Beanstalk plants for me. I gave a few to my daughter and her's are already climbing up her fence, and they were planted 2 mos. after mine. I'm really at a loss as to what is wrong with them.
I planted 4 seeds and got 2 up pretty fast . Finally the next came up. It is going fast . I think mine are just to hot to take off , I guess. I am lucky 3 out of 4 seeds.
Mini granny, don't fret, that's the only pot that's doing well, I have one other pot doing ok, the other 3 pots are only about 4 to 5 in tall, but just now look like their taking off. I did move them to a little shadier spot in the yard. and keep them watered often. Your right, they usually grow like jack in the bean stalks LOL
sorry I could't be of more help to you, you are in a hot area though. maybe that has something to do with it.

I don't know what to say about this problem either. I have lots of MG's and I must say some of them were a real pain. I have several varities that I lost and right now I am trying to get my Mt. Fugi to come out of it's slump. I am going to put the pot on a heating pad and see if that helps. It is about 6 or seven inches tall and has just sat there for days now. It did attain that height in just a couple days so I am wondering if it is resting and then will take off again.....LOL...
The Anderson MG is still about 3 inches tall and I don't think it will do anything. I only have one of five left so I will try it again next year.
My Yoosi has been sitting at about 6 inches for a couple of weeks now but it is planted in the ground so theres not much I can do about it.
The Picotees I posted the other day were planted back in late Feb the same time as No Beni, and it has been blooming for months now. So I don't have any answers for now. I am keeping notes and will see if anything clicks over the next few years....
The seeds I just got from Twin Lakes Chef, I planted the next day I recived them. So far all but the Mt Fugi is beginning to vine already.
My Japanesse White Phonix was up in 2 days. I had 4 seeds and 3 out of the 4 germinated, and the rest of the seeds I planted were up in 3-4 days.
I don't know but it seems to me the Japanesse MG's need a higher temp to germinate. And given the higher temp they will nearly jump out of the pot.
We have had quite a lot of rain even for south Texas so I am wondering if that has something to do with it. Other than that all the soil, fertilizer and sun or shade is pretty much the same.
Anyone else having this problem? Or even any others?
:o)

The three I have here are smallest No Tiuyu middle size Mt. Fugi the largest is No Beni. So that's left to middle then right. Started also Milky Way. No good so far. I will start some more tomorrow. I think I will chart these. I date all my pics, that way I know the file by the date. We can see how these grow. The upper shots of the Cardinal climbers were 17 days after I shot them the first time. It makes it easy to track them.
Hey ! Dee did you see the tower?( ten up) I wonder how far out the sides they will grow. should I prune the tops back for side growth? Remember your my Flying Saucer Guru!

Monterey you are sooooo baaaad.......LOL....They will grow out pretty far, they are trying to latch on to something else. I would try and twine them in as much as I could because the side shots will happen on there own.
If you need to prune them back though they will be alright and they will still bloom and do whatever they need to.
This is my tower of no Beni and Heian no Izumi...It is getting pretty full and there were only 4 seedlings in it to start with now of the 4 there are only 2 no Beni and one Izumi left. So as you can see they can take over quickly........:o)
Dee
I finally got my Akatsuki Umi "Sea" to grow up from the river bank instead of down. My goodness what we will brave for these pretty flowers. The whole time I was untwining and cutting other stuff away I was constantly looking around for snakes. MY gooodness these seeds better be worth all this trouble..and now they are growing over the top of my Cypress Garden Brug......LOL...What do yall think.........
:o)
Dee
This is another of Akatsuki Umi "Sea".....This one is just sooo pretty........
Montrey I was reading back in the thread and you as me what camera I have. I have a Sony Cyber Shot. Actually it is my Husbands, I bought it for him for Christmas 2 years ago....LOL...was a good gift don't you think....
:o)
Dee
Dee what is the model number on your sony? The tower has a metal fence-like material what is it? Now Dee what have you been doing ? That double Akatsuki is a poster shot. The other two are so good that it's quality is the only thing that eclipses them. First-rate work. The way you have position the shots is just so beautiful. You have leaped ahead with these shots. Good work!
Willow Wasp, your mg's are so beautiful. I think next year that I'm going to start mine in pots, instead of sowing directly in the ground. Maybe, they would get a faster start.
It would get a faster start Silvia and to me you have more control. Not enough sun move them, to much sun move them, hurricane coming, move them in the house.....LOL...and I have far to many planted in the ground so if a hurrican does come, and it's likely it will, I am gonna be in deep you know what
I like having them in pots so much better and I can cover them if need be to keep the seeds true. Unless I messed up and planted two different varities in the same pot as I did with No beni and Izumi....
As they say live and learn, but what happened with that is I put the Izumi in the pot with the no Beni since the Armadillos or Squirrels had rooted it out of its spot. This was suppose to be temporary until I could get a pot ready. Well it rained and rained that day and evening and when I got back to it I didn't know which was which soooo now we have 2 Japanese MG's in the same pot........a big no no ......
I am crossing them and tagging the crossed flowers. I watch the buds that are opening and tape them shut if I am not going to cross them.. Boy you should see all the tags on the trellis now....LOL....
Monterey, the model of my camera is Cyber-Shot and the only number on it is P31...thats the only name and number on it. It really is a good little camera and I don't think it was that expensive for when I bought it. I have seen some that take real good photos a lot cheaper and I have looked at some at pawn shops. My daughter "Moonlighting" got hers at a pawn shop and it takes wonderful photos......she ,only paid $50 bucks for it to and lot less than I paid.
:o)
Dee
Hey, now, that's an idea I hadn't thought of. Maybe DH wouldn't mind buying me a digital, if he could find one at a pawn shop. He might even find himself a new shotgun or rifle while there. LOL
moon I thought I was lusting before, but it just got worse. This is one of the ones that I had and lost due to my negligence, and now I am even sorrier.
Would really like a few seeds if you get enough to share.
It sure looks like all of your fretting over this one paid off!!!!
It is a beauty!
I had my first jp mg bloom ever yesterday, a no Beni. Gorgeous! They look so much more vigorous and healthy than the normal mgs. So nice!
I agree with you Alice, it's a beauty. My BS was so sickly as a seedling that I almost lost it many times....I am soooo happy it made it.
WTG eco! the no Beni's are beautiful....
golgi - your vine looks great!
Kathy - your moonvine bloom is outstanding!
That's a good question, I have had them flower on vine just a couple of inches long and then again there are some that take for evvvvvver. I have one that is at least 12 foot and pretty well the whole trellis is filled and not a hint of a flower. It's my Joyce Cobb.
It's not the varitiey either, you can have 2 of the same and they will flower at different times sooooo.....go figure....Glad to be soooo helpful.....LOL.... :o)
Dee
ooooh, aaaaah! So pretty! I am STILL waiting patiently for mine to bloom. (oh, my NOSE is growing) OK, maybe not PATIENTLY!lol
Wonder if plants only respond to soothing words, or if all my curses and threats could be causing the delay. hehehe
Donna
Must be nice now Donna or you'll hurt there itty bitty feelings and they will never bloom......LOL...
I don't have a clue cause I curse mine toooo...LOL
:o)
Dee
Oh, well, then I am doing it right! LOL
Very pretty Alice!
Hummmm, not Chocolate Silk...Chocolate Silk has varigated leaves and a definate coloring of Mauve, to beige. The bloom itself can be solid colored or streaked. These are the ones that are streaked but you can see some of the leaf coloring in them tooo.
Can't say for sure what yours are, can you get a little better photo of the bloom and the leaves??
:o)
Dee
ok, alright! I'm jealous! :)
Willow your chocolate silk is beautiful. I think mine must be a moon flower that got displaced this spring!
Thanks for looking.
I am gonna continue this thread here, http://davesgarden.com/t/443650/
It is getting long again..... yall are all such dear friends to be so supportive of these beautiful flowers and to show such intrest enthuesiam. I love yall all and all the flowers that are being post here an on other threads.......yall all keep up the good work... :o)
Dee
Another Bump, :o)
Dee
good idea!! bump bump bump LOL
I am adding a reply to this so I don't forget it later. On my Chocolate Silk Vines, the ones that are the oldest are quite large. Some are about the thickness of a pencil and one is a little larger.......
I don't want to put it on the new thread cause it wouldn't make any sense and would get lost...
At this point I am really wondering if this light colored flower is a Chocolate Silk Mutation or Something else from the Sunsmile Mix that was a Mutation of that. It has popped up in other Chocolate Silk seed Mix so I guess it is. If any of yall plant Chocolate Silk and get this mutantation would you let us know.
This could also be an indication that we could be losing the true seed of this variety so maybe we need to plan our planting more carefully.........
Hummm. this is something to think about....... ;(
Dee
