Is Chocolate MG, the same as Chocolate Silk? I have some from a commercial pack which I posted one photo on the other thread. The reason I ask, is that it is labeled just Morning Glory Chocolate. Thanks for your help.. Here is a photo of a 2nd bloom, the first did not open well. A
"beautiful, delicate MG continued"
No this is sometime confused and you get names such as Chocolate Rose Silk, but, they are different.
Chocolate Silk is usually larger and has more of a ruffley flower, Rose Silk can be large to but usually is a flatter flower....In my opinion the Rose Silk has the deeper color, but this could be due to growing conditions, fertilizer and such, I don't know just yet.....I have both and the two are distinctly different when you compare them side to side....
I should have taken a photo of the two together and didn't think of it. I will have to do that next year or maybe someone else has both blooming now and can make the comparison.... :o)
Dee
It's sad but sellers are using the name for both - kind of like brugmansia and datura. This is why you need to look at the photo to see what you are actually getting. Don't forget about the MG "Robe" either....it is also being thrown in there. I also agree that Rose Silk tends to have a deeper color. Chocolate Silk is the larger and more ruffly one....IMHO the prettier one.
aknapp, I think what you have is Rose Silk, the Flower is flater and has the deeper brownish mauve tone....Some of the Chocolates are darker though and a little flater, but they are still much larger and that I think is the biggest difference.
this is what My Chocolate Silks looked like this year, and they were big, but you can still see the difference.... :o)
Dee
Mine did not have the word silk in it at all.. the pack just says, Chocolate. That is why I thought there must be more than a couple of them.
This is one that I am wondering about, "what is you", "is you Chocolate, is you Rose" Very Large Flower and very large leaves and I did not fertilize this any more than any of the others so where do I look from here except at the begining again..............LOL
I am pretty sure it is Chocolate because it is really ruffeled, but then again the color is sooo intense.. Now are you really confused?
:)
Dee
willow I was confused before you ever posted that!!!!!! I mostly live in a state of confusion with a few minutes of concentration each day!!!haha
Whatever it is its very pretty!!!
lol.. aknapp.. me too.. , I was already that way..
Bumping just to see them agin and reminise.......... :o(
Dee
wahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh..... missed growing some this year.....
hopefully next year!
How do I harvest my seed pods? Let them dry out or what? Help!
You have to let the pod turn brown and then pull them off the vine. They should be dry enough that the outer shell will just break away.
I then shell them out of the husk and put them on a paper plate and write on it what they are and let them set there a day or two before I package them up. Most of the time they are dry enough to go right into a package but I want to make sure and not have moldy seed.

Thanks!
Well I guess these are more of the survivors of the Armadillo raids. This is some Flying Saucer late bloomers, I knew there were more MG's but didn't know for sure what they were since they had been move some distance for where they were planted and they tags were gone. Anyway these have gone the summer in total shade and have just began to bloom now that the trees have lost there leaves and the sun is on the vines.........
Very beautiful; I finally collected all my seed; they are sitting in little plastic cups all over the place. When the snow flies I will package them up and label them. What a job!
The one I got the most seeds from is bright pink with a white throat.
The other one I got a lot of seed from was the Blue Star/Pink Star one. The seeds are very white and beings it was grown right next to Grandpa Otts it was easy to separate the two.
My Giant Bloom Mix - there were some seeds but I had no way to distinguish them. I have a better plan for next year. Tedious but i think it will work. Putting a label right by the bloom at the time. Exaspirating that many of those blooms will be sterile.
I'm so excited - I have my first mg bloom! I bought some double picotee blue on ebay last month (and blue stripe and split personality). I couldn't wait 'til spring to plant, so I popped 2 of each variety in a pot, thinking I could bring it inside when it gets frosty. Only a month later I have a double blue picotee bloom! It is small, but it is definitely a double blue picotee. This vine is much smaller than the other two varieties, and only one of the seeds germinated, but there is a flower bud at every leaf joint. The others are growing and growing but no sign of buds. It's not as gorgeous as some of the beautiful japanese mg you have been sharing, but I had to share, I'm so happy :>)

I planted a heavenly blue in a pot it gave me a true blue flower but all the rest look like the one at the top of this thread.
I have it in front of a big pic window so it gets light and i have a florescent light on it when the days are dull and not much sun.
Why has the bloom color changed ?
Is it the light ?
What do you think?
trifunov I am so glad to still see these wonderful flowers blooming at this time of the year. "Only in the South" can we push our luck like this. I think you will get seed off these blooms to and I hope you can have many more just like them and all of the others out there to.
rh3708 Morning Glorys tend to have some varations in color no matter what they are. Some will be true to there color from the first bloom to the last and some are prone to mutations, could be they have some genes in the background and some of the flowers show it and some don't and it could be the lighting.
This is (my best guess a )Flying Saucer, I think it was planted with another batch of Flying Saucers in about 50/50 sun and shade so I'm pretty sure it came from the same package. The sister flower is well striped and looks like the traditional Flying Saucers, but this one has spent the entire summer in the shade and has just began to bloom since the leaves are falling off the trees.........go figure. It is almost pure White, with a few specks of blue and a streak here and there that tells me where it came from. So I would say the lighting has some to do with color.

Neglected to say
I kept a chart of where I planted my Morning Glorys and after I looked at it I must say
I think this one could have been moved by the Armadillos in the spring or It could be the Clarks Heavenly Blue I had in the area as well. Either way it still should not be white with a few specks of blue. So I still think the lighting had some to do with it.

trifunov - Congrats on the bloom!! It is beautiful. I don't blame you for not wanting to wait till spring! I have had to tie my hands behind my back from starting some more seed right now :)
rh3708 - you have the vine growing inside?
Yes it is growing inside i thought it would be nice to have one in the house for the winter.
It seems to be doing well the leaves are much smaller than if they were outside in the ground.
I moved them closer to the window today just to see if it is the light that is causing the color to be different.
I wish my digi cam was working right i would post a pic.
I have never grown them inside so i wouldn't know about the light needs.
I guess this winter will be a learning winter for me with the Morning Glory's.
Just trying to get the light cycle right is going to be the goal.
So I can get a true bloom with every flower.
I hope it will work.
Happy Gardening !

Congrats to all! I drug a brug into the house that was underplanted with Dwarf picotee Mg's and they are going to seed. They even bloomed in the house so we will see what transpires.
Good to see blooms in the winter!
Oh, I do hope I get seed, WillowWasp. I'm really appreciating the long growing season here. I wish I had sown tons more in September and October. Next year I will know better. Has anyone kept MG's growing all winter in the house? Any pointers on the right way to do it?
Natasha
So far I have not tried to grow any in the house but with the sucess some have had I just might try some. I have a couple that I have alot of seed of that may be worth the trouble. So I think I will try and see what happens.............
after all ........Nothing ventured, nothing gained............... 8o)

Oooooh Arlene that would have been sooo pretty. I sure wish you would have taken a picture to. You could have entered it in the Photo Contest to I'll bet.......Here is another group of my unknowns blooming this morning. They seem to be getting whiter........and then I have one pop up that is almost all blue and then one streaked again......

I hope to have better pics next year.
Just to remember what it was all about last season. I am hoping with the new growers and some new members we will have a year to remember. I am waiting for the first photo to be posted this year. And I hope its something just awsome.
