Plumie in Saskatchewan

Moose Jaw, SK(Zone 3b)

I've tried to be really good about *not* watering and now, after ~2 months growth is starting. :D Please tell me what is developing on the stalk...is this the start of the bloom stem?

Leaves and or bloom stem....yup yup yup
Good going !!!

Moose Jaw, SK(Zone 3b)

Ya Hooooooooooooo!!!! Thank you for the confirmation rikerbear....I doubt if more than a handful have been grown here, I've never seen one before. :D

Seattle, WA(Zone 8b)

Just try not to overwater....easiest way to kill them I'm told.
Be sure and send picture updates.

Moose Jaw, SK(Zone 3b)

I will......Eyes is sooooooooooo sooooooooooooo excited!! :D People at work ask weekly about how it is doing....all I keep telling them is I haven't turned it to mush yet! :D

Seattle, WA(Zone 8b)

Out of my 7 'sticks' I have one that is mushing out on me :-(
Don't know why really....water exactly like the other 6, but it is getting blk spot stem rot none the less.
Can't wait for mine to sprout up like your is starting to.
I'll post ya some pic when (and if) they do.

:D Looking forward to seeing them :D .....this is so exciting for us newbies!! Next year I'm going to beg someone in Ontario to pick up a couple for me!!

Hi Lilypon, you definitely have an inflorescence , in other words, a flower stalk forming. Congratulations! Don't worry too much about overwatering. As long as you have your Plumeria in a well-draining mix, root rot is uncommon with established plants. Cuttings, which are rooting or trying to form roots, are much more susceptible to root rot, especially the red and rainbow cuttings.

rikerbear...I've only watered this one twice (once well when I planted it and a 1/4 cup with a little peroxide a month later). How often do you water yours?

Moose Jaw, SK(Zone 3b)

Thanks Clare! :D I wanted to use that term but I wasn't confident enough that that's what it was. This is sooooooooo very exciting for a Prairie Girl!! :D

This is a planted cutting though.......will I still have to be careful for a while?

Lilypon, I water mine every day, sometimes every other day and sometimes twice a day in the summertime. I have five inflo's on five different Plumerias so far. I will post pictures when they bloom.

Here's a picture of some of them, taken about a month ago:

Clare you have to visit Canada in the spring with a few cuttings!! ;) Looking forward to seeing your blooms....with a napkin under my chin!! ;)

Ventura, United States(Zone 10b)

Hi Lilypon, I'm excited for you too! I can't wait to see pictures. No, you no longer have to be careful, and you should water when the soil looks dry. Once a plumeria cutting establishes roots, as evidenced by leaves and growth, you should stick to a regular watering schedule. Here are some of my Plumeria seedlings:

LOL, Lilypon. Most of my plants are still pretty small to take cuttings from, but I bought a bunch from Aloha Palms for $1.99 each. You might see if they will ship to Canada. Here's the link: http://www.alohapalms.com/cgi-bin/store/agora.cgi?cart_id=8569144.27674*X444L8&product=PLUMERIAS

Those are fantastic!! I have a few seeds but was thinking of planting them in a mini greenhouse outside once our weather warms up...this plant is truly addictive!! I can hardly wait to see and *smell* the blooms! :D

Moose Jaw, SK(Zone 3b)

Thanks for the link Clare....my daughter is graduating this spring and between that and the orthodontist (braces) I think it will be a year or two yet. I *will* be going to look at that link for purchasing after we are finished paying for the above. :D

Ventura, United States(Zone 10b)

Lilypon, I would start your seeds now by putting them in a folded moist papertowel inside a plastic ziplock baggy. Keep warm and moist in a lighted area. Once you see germination, then you can pot them in soil with their tails sticking up and keep them by a window. Then you can put them out once the weather warms up. See this link: http://www.plumeria101.com/seeds101.html

You are right that these trees are wonderful and addicting.

Moose Jaw, SK(Zone 3b)

Thanks once again Clare! I will be starting them Friday (day off). :D

Ventura, United States(Zone 10b)

Good luck, Lilypon. I should add that I started my seeds this way. I even kept them lying on the gas stove top for the warmth. Remember to keep the papertowel moist but not wet. Warmth is very helpful with germination if you can put them on the stove top or on a warm surface.

Got's it! ;) edited to say I think I'll use the water heater the furnace is off here now and our kitchen gets a bit cool a night.

Lily I have watered mine only once after initial planting also.
I have a feeling the cutting was bad to begin with....it had a wrinkled area that is now where the rot has occurred.
I can't wait for our night temps to stabalize a bit more so I can move these out side.....don't want to put them out while there are still those 40 degree nights.
Oh I'm so excited for you....you've given me hope for my 'sticks'

Moose Jaw, SK(Zone 3b)

I thought that's what you probably would have done...I remember that both of us were listening carefully to Clare's suggestions when we both had just gotten our sticks. I saw JLD (Ithink that's his name) suggest watering with water and H202 (peroxide) on just about anything prone to root rot so I did that when I watered my stick a month ago and again tonight. I also watered my orchids, brugs and everything else with it and all look pretty good...my Thunbergia Grandiflora also bloomed a few weeks after that (I've never had it bloom before) so felt it certainly didn't hurt.

I'm crossing my fingers and toes for you rikerbear...I know I've been avoiding even looking at my stick, for weeks at a time, but the firmness of it and your other six makes me think all will go well for us! :)

Seattle, WA(Zone 8b)

Thanks Lilypon.....I'm sure we'll both have gorgeous blooms all summer long. :-)

High Desert, CA(Zone 8a)

hi Pam :), remember this thread http://davesgarden.com/t/392701/plumeria ? hope it jug ur memory LOL.

yes, i do use H2O2 when watering. not only does it help in the root system, it is also good in the long ran cuz u won't have bugs during the growing season, more so in the winter. i have been using H202 for several years now and am very happy with the results.

Clare, thanks for the link. nice to know there are reasonable sources for plumerias.

Moose Jaw, SK(Zone 3b)

Hi MaVie!! I hadn't forgotten it either! :) In fact I had thought of bringing it up last night to thank everyone there as well....I was so careful to not even breathe on it! ;) I think everyone brought up some points or links, even to the same site, that I hadn't seen before. :D And all contributed to a Plumeria growing where very few, if any, have grown before!:D

I'm in the middle of moving mine today. Here they are:

Yours look great Clare. :) I can hardly wait for the leaves and, of course, the flowers to develop more. The branching, that the one at the top row did, is lovely. I hope mine will do that.

Seattle, WA(Zone 8b)

Awesome Clare! Thanks for sharing the pix....please post when they bloom.

Ventura, United States(Zone 10b)

Thanks Lilypon and Rikerbear. I counted five inflo's so far, and I will definitely post when they bloom.

Lilypon, Plumerias always branch when they bloom so yours will definitely branch following your bloom. The one that you mentioned has never bloomed for me, but it does like to branch! It now has an inflo for the first time on one of the branch tips. I think it is a pink that I got at Home Depot.

I have five grafted ones that I got from Florida Colors: http://www.floridacolors.com/ They are:

Duke
Tahitian Sunset
Nebel's Rainbow
Marion B.
Intense Rainbow

I also have a red one and a pink one from Home Depot. A friend sent me a Peach Shell Glow in a trade, and another kind person sent me Aztec Gold for postage. And I picked up two Celadine's at a local nursery.

The rest I purchased from Aloha Palms: http://www.alohapalms.com/cgi-bin/store/agora.cgi

Moose Jaw, SK(Zone 3b)

I haven't checked what all of yours look like yet but I did look at the Rainbow Colored ones and the Nebel's Rainbow is at the top of my list....all the other Rainbows are a close 2nd! ;) You're sure that you don't want to see B.C.'s/Alberta's Rocky Mountains??? A couple of cuttings would pass though cutoms easily! ;)

Ventura, United States(Zone 10b)

LOL, Lilypon. Nah, it sounds too cold for me! I don't even want to visit our Rocky Mountains! LOL! Anyway, mine is just a single stick and hasn't branched yet. You might be able to find some ebay sellers that will ship to Canada:-)

Moose Jaw, SK(Zone 3b)

I will :) ...just can't resist asking you! ;)

Fort Pierce, FL(Zone 10a)

LILYPON and all: I have been following this thread because of all the excitement you all show for this plant. So.......I finally went to the PDB and looked up Plumeria and it's a Frangipani!!! That's the only name I ever heard it called. My neighbor has a yard full of them and he offered me any "sticks" I wanted. I had NO idea what to do with them, but now I'm going to give them a try. See what you learn on DG! :)
Pati

Moose Jaw, SK(Zone 3b)

Hi Pati! :)
I posted on the Canadian Trading forum that I have wanted this plant ever since my parents went to Hawaii when I was 7. They brought back a Lei and pictures of it and I was so ticked that they didn't bring back the actual plant (if I remember correctly they did bring back some African Violets and Epis). A Plumeria (Frangipani) is now growing in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan, 37 years later and I am riding on a roller coaster! :D
What color(s) are your neighbors tree(s) and what scent(s) does it have?
