And the new name is...

NOTE! THIS THREAD IS ANCIENT AND NO LONGER APPLICABLE!!

Dave's Garden.

Well, for the past week it's been a flurry of activity, both here at DG and offline in private email. Terry, Trish and I have thrown around literally at least 200 different ideas of names and some were terrible and some were good, but none were perfect.

What it comes down to is this: DG is not as well known as the PDB and GWD and we want to change that, and the obvious answer is to change it to a "real" name.

The thing is, we don't want to do this at the expense of the members, and there were a significant number of people who expressed concern that it would lose some of the flavor.

As a result, DG remains Dave's Garden and we won't be changing the name. If and when we ever do come up with a new name, it will be the umbrella over which DG, PDB, GWD, GBW will be under. There are other things that we can do to improve the marketing of DG and get more people over here, and that's the next step.

So, thanks and sorry for the false alarm everyone!

best,
dave

Ya'll know we love you for all your hard work even if we don't say it enough!!!

Newark, OH(Zone 5b)

Excellent! Oh, GOOD. Yay! Yippee! Yeah, I'm happy. ;)

I thought the suggestion in the previous thread about linking to "forums" was a good one. I know I salmost always check out forums when I see such a link at a site.

Citrus Heights, CA(Zone 9b)

Did I sway you? You started it and me on this good journey, thanks!

Middle, TN(Zone 6b)

I am as thrilled as I have been in a long time! The name is wonderful and I am so glad you didn't change it. I love it just like it is. I felt as the others did that posted their concerns with change. I didn't post my emotions as I decided to remain silent and let your better judgment lead you in your decision. Excellent decision... in my humble opinion! Super Dave did it again, folks! Three cheers for you, Dave and Trish!

Oklahoma City, OK(Zone 7a)

What about my coffee mug? I was expecting to sell it on ebay for millions and retire? :)

I must say, I'm delighted, though.

Maben, MS(Zone 7b)

Thank you , Thank you.

Irving (Dallas area), TX(Zone 8a)

As long as we don't have to worry so much about the name being "down-home" why don't we call the umbrella site GardeningNetwork.com. It is available by the way.

Oops, no it isn't; gardening-network.com is available.

HIP HIP HOORAY!!!

And thank you for letting us all help in the decision instead of just changing the family name. :-))))

Gulfport, MS(Zone 8a)

All I can say is WOW and Woohoo. I couldn't imagine playing in anyone elses garden. Thanks Dave, Trish and Terry!!!!
Jen

p.s., because the impending name change bothered me so much, does that mean i need to get a life? lol...

Waterville, KS

Phew!!!! I was just getting used to the name ! Thanks for not changing it ! Bob's Garden is a great!! errrr.......Fred's, Larrys? hehehe

Franklin, LA(Zone 9a)

woo hoo! You see, it is Dave's garden, but with input from all of the gardeners. Terrific!

It's a shame dg.com and dg.net are both taken. If they weren't, you could focus on the initials and take some of the 'personal' out of it. Then you could use all of those DG names in an ad campaign.

As it is, it seems to me that if the majority of the members are coming from the PDB, the GWD and the GBW, there are ways of 'funneling' them into DG that are not being utilized.

I think you made the wisest decision in not changing the name.

Yippie! I'm still a DGer!
The name "Dave's Garden" may not sound fancy, professional or encompass all you would like BUT it sure has worked so far and sure makes one feel Welcomed and Personally invited to "come on in and take a look around".

Please just put a "linked hot spot" to the forums or a Dave's Network box on all of the pages within the network. It would make using each idividual place easier and always bring us home to Dave's Garden.
Your the greatest!

Good Choice!

Blue Springs, MO(Zone 5b)

LOL - I'm with MSJen, I must need to get a life, being so obsessed with the name change!!! But then again, gardens are such a big part of my life...and DG has hugely expanded my knowledge and love of gardening, so it's no wonder it's so important!!! :) And you know what? I think the biggest thing is I've always been alone in my gardens and now I'm not. Thanks, Dave, and everyone!!!

Santiago, Chile(Zone 9b)

Thanks, Dave (Trish and Terry). This is what I do appreciate so much from this WebSite: we are an active part of Dave's Garden, you really let us get involved.

I love Dave's Garden!!!!!!!

Mount Hermon, LA(Zone 8b)

I think your decision was a wise one. I see no drawback to marketing this site as "Dave's Garden." It is friendly- and homey-sounding, something for which many may be looking in today's stressful world.

When I search for online gardening sites, I do not look for impersonal, high-tech, slick sites. Television programs of that nature are also avoided. TV programs that invite one into someone's back yard are much more appealing and sought-after.

After dealing with "modern" business practices for the last 25 years (corporate aviation), I am so pleased to have found this gardening site which provides a down-home feeling of community, caring, and honesty. It is a relaxing place to explore a major hobby, and to gain (and share) information with fellow gardeners.

The PDB is second-to-none; a comprehensive database with real pictures and information from real gardeners. And the GWD is always the first place I check before purchasing online. Both are invaluable resources.

Thank you for starting, maintaining, and continuing this site. It is a treasure!

(But Dave, that was SO mean getting everyone riled up, you bad thing! LOL. But it reaffirmed how much gardeners are loyal and dedicated to this site)

New Iberia, LA(Zone 9a)

DUH! You are rat! I taught it was so real but I am glad it worth it to keep the name like it is always will be so happy to see everyone here are happy too.

Murfreesboro, TN(Zone 7a)

Dave can defend himself, but please make no mistake, that was no "fire drill" - we were quite serious about making a name change.

My guess is that after weighing the pros and cons, Dave decided that none of the names we were considering was worth the angst it was causing some of our members ;o)

Mount Hermon, LA(Zone 8b)

Oh Terry, Dave doesn't have to defend himself. He's much-loved and admired. And no, I realize that the possibility of a name change was quite real. I was just teasing him there. Happy gardening!

Oklahoma City, OK(Zone 7a)

Time to order more mugs and t-shirts, yes Terry?

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

Will you tell us the name you almost went with?

Gardenstead.com

dave

Murfreesboro, TN(Zone 7a)

Uhhhh, I have no say-so over t-shirts and mugs. (I'm for them, but then again, I'm not the one who gets to pay for and store the inventory, lolol!)

And as to spilling the beans on the near-name .... that's Dave's call, too. I'd tell but then he might feel inclined to shoot me ;o)

New Iberia, LA(Zone 9a)

LOL

Benton, KY(Zone 7a)

I'm glad you kept things the way they are for the time being....when the perfect name comes, then by all means, do it.

Maybe there can be other creative ways of drawing folks to DG that haven't been explored.

Newark, OH(Zone 5a)

That would be a good name. I see you had it ready to go. I tried it and it works. If you ever decide to go to that I would support you 100%.

Montgomery, AL(Zone 8a)

Glad you did not change to that. I, like others, prefer the personal touch of DavesGarden.

Gulfport, MS(Zone 8b)

for what it's worth...I'm really glad your keeping the name as is. If it ain't broke, as my granny always said, don't fix it...
& DG sure ain't broke!!

So.App.Mtns., United States(Zone 5b)

Gardenstead doesn't work for me. NO personal appeal. Glad you didn't go there....

McKinney, TX(Zone 8a)

Hey, I like Gardenstead.com Dave. It is still homey. Had you already registered it? If not, someone else will surely pick it up soon. :)

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

Dave's Garden really fits this place. All of us here are part of your garden, Dave.

Waterville, KS

Well, Daves is better than my name idea last night (tired) "Da over Da Garden Wall Gang" LOL. Some things in life should just remain....ever... constant.

Oostburg, WI(Zone 5b)
