Beautiful, Delicate Morning Glories

Jones Creek, TX(Zone 9a)

They are begining to pop everywhere now. I found a few on Monday and now I see them everywhere...
All are so pretty and such a joy to have around, I am waiting one the Japanese to start blooming and get seeds of them for us all to enjoy.....
Thanks for looking at all my post and MG photos....
This one is Double Blue Picotee, I also have the Double Pink it just has not bloomed yet. Don't know why it was planted at the same time. I think the soil has alot to do with it being slower...

And Orange Noah, this is the smallest Morning Glory I know of. It is very bright and I think will be pretty when the vines are longer and it's a little more filled out.....

And this morning I have another blooming, this one is Chocolate Silk also a Japanese MG. It is pretty large and sooooo delicate. :o)

I didn't soak all my seeds first. I don't really remember witch ones I soaked and witch ones I didn't. I cant say soaking made any difference in the germination of them, I had good germination on all.
I have lots more I am waiting on to bloom, some of them are the beautiful Japanese MG from the co-op Sbar sponsered here on Daves. I checked on some of the seedlings today and I am soooo happy they are all doing well....

Thats all for now folks but I will keep yall updated on all and will use this thread for the rest of the growing season concerining the Morning Glories.....

Hi Dee. What do you have them all climbing on? I've got about thirty kinds to plant, but I don't have enough trellises for them all. I left some brugs in the ground over the winter for some to climb on, but I'm beginning to wonder where I'll go with all the others. Gosh, your pictures are pretty. Thanks for sharing them with us.

Jackson, SC(Zone 8a)

i have 8 foot by one foot square poles i let mine run up on . you can get them at home depot like 24 for 8.00.

if you know something better i am interstested too. I have fence line though also now. i wish i had more room for more mgs.

Archer/Bronson, FL(Zone 8b)

I received several different kinds of MGs in trade from our friends here on DG. I have already spread some seeds and they are sprouting and blooming very nicely.

Am I correct in assuming that MG's are annuals? They will die back on their own? When? They will come back again too? or will I have to plant them again? Keep in mind I am in zone 10b and we don't get cold here.

Thanks for your help

Molly :^)

edited to say: Sorry for shanghaing the thread Willow, I thought this would be a great place to pick up a little advice.

Lovely Dee! I am so jealous! I am still just foliage.

Jackson, SC(Zone 8a)

Molly yes mgs are annuals. the seed pod for every flower so make sure you watch for the seed pods. the seed pods are green then go to a tan color thats crinkly. thats when they are ready to pick when crinkly.

Dee they're beautiful. I love the foliage on the Double Blue Picotee - very pretty.

Morning Glories, I hate the little buggers! Not the cultivated ones but the ugly wild ones with the little white flowers that choke to death all my other plants if I don't pull them out. I don't know where they came from, I suspect my neighbor, he's been mad at me ever since I told him his alien spacebaby kids were ruining my compost pile by eating all the worms in it. But I do plant real morning glories in 1gal. pots spaced every 4feet along my picket fence. In zone 5 they will not bloom untill mid July but put on a great show untill the first frost.

Archer/Bronson, FL(Zone 8b)

his kids were eating your worms? LOL geeyyuck.

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

Snipper, great idea. I think I'll do a bunch of mine in pots this year so I can put them right where I want them and won't have to dig sod to make a place for them to grow. I'm tired of digging already anway.

erie, PA(Zone 5a)

Hey Brugie. Here's a little money saving tip for everyone, M.G.'s do not like rich soil. I use potting soil that is 2-3 years old, with just a little compost mixed in and they do great. Trouble is the wild ones will grow in anything too, if I don't clean out my cats litter box, they'll be in it as well . P.S. remember, the happyist gardeners have the most dirt under their fingernails, keep digging!

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

How about if I use regular dirt from my veggie garden and mix something into it that will allow it to accept moisture better? What could I mix with it?

Western, WI(Zone 4a)

If you are making a list for trading this fall for MG seeds, please put me on it.

Thanks for sharing your pictures. Right now, my seeds are soaking prior to being potted up today and hopefully will soon be sending up shoots.

Have a great gardening week.

Maxine

Jones Creek, TX(Zone 9a)

Brugie you can use half garden dirt and half potting soil and that would be good enough. It should keep you garden soil from packing and not be to rich.

But on the other hand I have planted MG's in pure compost and they did wonderful sooooo go figure.....

Anyway here is another beauty I found this morning. This is the double Pink Picotee. Isn't it just beautiful. Also I wanted to mention on most of the MG, the vines are under a foot long and they were blooming already.....wow these are amazing ..... :o)

And another shot that show's 2 together, there were 4 on this vine and looks like about 6 buds. This vine is only about a foot long. I hope it keeps on like this. Also it is planted in almost complete shade..... :o)

Jones Creek, TX(Zone 9a)

I will have to wait until maybe the weekend and get some pictures of how I do the buckets. I though I had a couple more empty ones but the guys used them to catch oil in so I'm out now. I will have to go to Shipleys Donuts and get somemore...donuts and buckets...LOL
Here is a better photo of Split personality this morning. :o)

Awwwww! All these pics of Morning Glories is both wonderful and depressing!! I'm in zone 5 and it's not even time to plant mine yet!! Arrrggghh! But the promise of such beautiful blooms keeps me going!

Beverly Hills, CA(Zone 10a)

They are so pretty! I can't wait for mine from Select Seeds to bloom.

New York, NY(Zone 7a)

The smaller Flying Saucers bloom looks like it has 4-fold symmetry instead of 5. I don't believe I've ever seen that on a morning glory before.

Stockton, CA(Zone 9a)

Dee! I got blooms this morning in my mixed pots! My envy is ebbing. LOL Not a good picture, the wind was howling & I think Toto might have dive bombed me, or else that darn hawk is back, but I just had to share.

Can anyone reccomend a good place to get some really nice MG seeds? Most of the ones I get I just happen to stumble upon at supermarkets and hardware stores and these are your run-of-the-mill type, either red or purple.
