You're probably right.
Regular Gas at Chevron in CA ....2.19 per gallon
Well, I line dry, hand wash dishes. Have on/off switch on waterheater and it keeps water hot for 2 days. Found a timer to wire in where we won't forget to turn it off.
Have a sprinkler system that is on auto timer so I don't forget to turn water hose off, or more likely fall asleep when I come from gardening tuckerd out.
We have a timer on our thermostat for our central heating...not something you warm-zoners need to be worried about! lolol But it works for our central A/C too, in the summer. Really saves a lot, when we don't have to remember to change the temp when we go to work, get up in the morning, etc.
In the Ottawa (Canada) area, gas prices tend to be cheapest Thursday morning and Monday morning, and most expensive on Fridays. Also, there's a great website that people post their price sightings on...very entertaining sometimes. :-) The variety of prices in the same city is amazing.
In Davis, CA, the price of unleaded in 2.47 (and that a good price for CA)
I like that fuel gauge, that about sums it up here.
edited for spellling...

lol! That one should be standard on new vehicles these days!
Hmm....down to $2.19/gal. in SW Wisconsin recently.
WOW and Bleah... I founf gas on the way to the GARU on Friday for $1.98, not but about 75 miles from where we were gathering, middle Georgia... same place today (a mere 44 hours later) was 9¢ more a gallon.
Paid $2.09 today in Sherman, TX.
Passed the gas station yesterday, quickley, and saw regular at $2.54/gal. The Legislature just voted to raise our 28¢/gal gas tax by
9 1/2 cents over the next 4 years.Good thing we are so close to shopping and bus routes.
One wonders....are they going to put the money toward improving the public transportation system, and bike paths? This is a question that could be asked of many jurisdictions.
I was wondering that, too. What is the reasoning behind it? Do they blame rising gas prices? LOL
We could get into a lot banned AUP discussions here... best not to.
There are many alternative fuels out there, though. I'll try to post a few websites later...
Didn't think I was even close!
No, I don't think you were John... but some of us who have had threads pulled are a bit more cautious. I love my time on DG and DO NOT want to lose those perks.
If someone complains about my comment I won't argue it's ok with me. :-)
Ditto.... I thought the question was just along the same lines as "ok, the prices are high, now what can we DO about it?" Not sure what AUP stands for, but sorry if I've transgressed any rule. :-)
Shannon
Shannon, it's AAcceptable Use Policy" and the link is down at the bottom of the page...
Acceptable Use Policy and Code of Conduct
http://davesgarden.com/about/index.php?page=tos
Thanks darius. I had read that policy a few times in the past - just didn't recognize the abbreviation, that's all. Ok, so if it wasn't John, it must have been me - ?
At any rate, on the topic at hand, I for one think it would be particularly à-propos, as long as we're dealing with these high prices, if some of the gas taxes eventually make their way to public transportation or other emission-reducing means. It's hard to imagine our car-dependent economy expanding at its current pace indefinitely. And maybe if the demand for gas goes down, the prices will inch back down in time. Lots of factors, and a complex issue. Lots of people have a stake in it, one way or another, that's for sure.
Prices have been stable here lately...although 10 years ago, if you'd said I'd be paying 90 cents a litre, I would've said you're crazy :-)
Shannon
Shannon, actually I didn't think anyone had violated the AUP yet, but I didn't want anyone to, either. This could be a volatile situation/thread for comments about why the high gas prices, rather than just comments of the prices, or what alternatives we have.
I think exploring alternatives is a wonderful idea, including alternative fuels, and vehicles that can use them.
Bike paths are becoming more common here in the NC mountains but mainly for long-range cyclists not those driving to work... but I live in a very rural area. The few mopeds seen on the roads here are those driven by folks that have lost their license to drive, usually by drunk driving. But, hey, they get a zillion MPG compared to the SUV's!
Gasoline prices in my area are volatile, increasing as much as 10¢ (USD) in 48 hours, then being somewhat stable for a week.
That's a good point, darius - thanks for the reminder. Lots of peeps have a stake in gas prices, and you're right, it can get quite emotional, as it's connected to livelihood for many, and the environment, and other important things. Well, the thread was started to compare prices and evolved to include discussions of how to deal with those prices, and I'll do my best to return to that . :-) Thanks again.
I just did some calculations for the heck of it - to see if I could figure it out...lol.... it's past my bedtime so my results may be somewhat suspect, but I think our price of C$0.90 per litre equates to US$2.78 per gallon.
Shannon
Shannon, I see no reason this thread cannot segue to what we can do about the prices, or we could start another thread and not hijack this one. What do you think?
Wow, $2.78 is as high as Californis gas!
On our west coast, the price is C$1.029 a litre, which would be around US$3.17 a gallon. There's two conversions there...litres to gallons, and C$ to US$, but I think that's what it comes out to. Yikes. Our transportation costs may be slightly higher due to some slightly longer distances overall, or perhaps we have more taxes incl in the price - not sure.
I don't mind adding a tangent to this thread (evidently! lol!), as long as noone objects. But I entered this thread relatively late into the game.
Saw a moped in town yesterday! Very rare sighting.
That just might become a more familiar sight in the near future, don't you think?
I'd love to have one (a moped) , but we live at least 7 miles from any town, and I drive 28+ miles to get to work (a very 'rural' area) ....I'd probably have to leave pretty early and would get quite 'buggy covered' enroute! ickk...could you imagine?! (lol!)
They have bug shields for them.
$2.64 down from $2.79 on the 17th
I wouldn't count on this being a permanent downward trend, but I felt like I was getting a bargain!!
Sure wish I could afford to buy one of those hybrid cars - I drool at their MPG ratings. "Grin" Dotti
Yeah, it will be nice when the prices come down a bit, won't it? Plus, if there are any bugs they should be worked out (or completely dead) by the time I could afford one... sigh... :-)
Shannon
One of our college-age kids we go to church with told me last week he's planning to convert his car to run on used vegetable oil. He's found some local sources that will give him (or pay him to take) their used oil, and he's certainly smart enough to do the conversion work, so we'll see!
That reminds me, there's a guy around our area that did that.
He has a diesel pickup truck, and he has a second tank that uses 'used' vegetable oil.
He has to switch from one to the other while the vehicle is running, but it works well for him.
Apparently it does cost some money to 'refine' the vegetable oil, but he still sees a savings.
DH says when the guy's running his vegetable oil, the exhaust smells like French Fries!
Last week gas prices climbed back up to $2.24 mid-week, and they're up to $2.29 as of yesterday.
Hmmm....down to $2.26 2 days later. What the heck??

I got gas last night at Circle K and it was 2.35 a gal. I'm glad my Mustang gets around 28 mpg. My truck only gets 14. Its in mothball right now.
It is now $1.95 here. Don't know why it's going down.
Bernie
shhhhhhhhhh, don't let them hear you!
Yes, I paid $1.99 in South Carolina, right out of $2.19 Charlotte on I-77.
I paid $1.97 at exit 29 on I-95 in Georgia.
Much better.
Gotta get our tourist on the roads for the summer!
Georgia seems to have less State tax added to the cost of gasoline. I always filled up in Ga when going south from VA. Jo
It's the same situation here, between Ontario and Québec. I live in QC but work in ON; always try to fill up on the Ontario side of the river before going home fm work, as it's usually 4 to 5 cents a litre cheaper. And watching sites like ottawagasprices.com helps too - kind of a grass-roots watchdog thing. But sometimes Québec fools us and has lower prices - and they do seem to be more stable there. Funny, the difference that state/provincial systems can make to gas prices, eh?
Shannon
There you go, speaking Canadian again, eh?
A test to see if anyone would understand, John ;-) You have obviously been studying your phrasebook, or lurking in the (recently renamed, BTW) "Canadian Gardening" forum.
Here's some more.... toque, two-four, loonie, toonie, Nanaimo bar! .... lol!
Oh, yeah, the topic of this thread.... gas prices - ahem! (koff koff) Well, ours are a few cents higher today, which is normal for a Friday - I'm going to see if I can make the last 1/5th of our tank last til Monday when they usually go back down again.
Shannon
Shucks, me father was born on a homestead west of Ashern, Manitoba in 1912! I even have the legal land description of my grandfathers original application! I am not far removed from being Canadian myself. I speak a somewhat broken Canadian. Paid $1.95/gal with 3 cents off at WalMart in Sherman, Texas today. Falling prices. ???
