Best & Worst, what did I learn today.

TORRINGTON, AB(Zone 3b)

FREE is great, Pat! Hope the dogwoods you got are pink. I would take the white ones, but that's me lol
Glad that you got her to the airport on time.
My DOMESTIC flight says that I need to be at the airport 3 hours before takeoff. That's a lot of time, but it's in the afternoon, and I'll arrive just after 6pm Winnipeg time.

(Linda Kay) Amarill, TX(Zone 7a)

Gardens are beautiful, but it takes a lot of work to get them finished.

When are you flying Susan?

TORRINGTON, AB(Zone 3b)

Thurs May 29th. Karen will pick me up.

northeast, IL(Zone 5a)

Never a dull moment here. I was making my lunch to take to work when one of the dogs carried a possum into the kitchen and dropped it on the floor! I screamed, the possum instead of continuing to play dead, so I could grab it, got up and ran. Teagan, the dog grabbed it again and ran outside where she dropped it on the patio. There were only 2 dogs out, thankfully. It continued to play dead outside so I was able to grab one collar and bring a dog in, before grabbing the other. I watched for a few minutes and it waddled off down the fence line. I hope it leaves and finds somewhere else to live. I don't need this, especially at 4am.

TORRINGTON, AB(Zone 3b)

Ohhhhhhhhhh Deb - I agree, I wouldn't like any critter brought in by a furry, into my kitchen!

(Linda Kay) Amarill, TX(Zone 7a)

Glad you got it taken care of. I don't like seeing them when they are outside.

(Pat) Kennewick, WA(Zone 5b)

Our area has not had possums until fairly recently. The first time I saw one was when I lived in Walla Walla in 2004. I opened the drapes to the patio and there it was. My first thought was RAT! I'd never seen a rat before either, I didn't even know we had possums. Having one dropped in my kitchen would NOT please me!!

(Pat) Kennewick, WA(Zone 5b)

Welcome John, I love the looks of planters, but I don't have the consistency necessary for watering in our hot summer days.

(Pat) Kennewick, WA(Zone 5b)

I just beat the rain!! I pulled up weed barrier, moved rock off another 20 feet of flower bed. Then I got help and dug out plants out front. I ran an ad in Facebook Market place for free plants, you dig and got rid of the green shrubs, no takers on the red plants. They are NASTY, I think they are some kind of barberry and I can't get within 5 feet of them without getting thorns in my hands. It took 3 of us to dig out those green bushes. I'll buy some compost and steer manure to amend the soil and start planting. Marie will be shocked when she gets home!

There's a really ugly mess at the road/ entry to our driveway. There is rock with 2 oversized native grasses and snakegrass has infested it something terrible. I know I don't have time to tackle that before she gets home. It's going to take lots of chemicals AND shoveling to overcome that mess.

I got all 4 of the quilts I made while in Chelan quilted and I have 2 of them still to apply the binding. I am slowly making my way thru the new stuff and the old WIPs.

(Linda Kay) Amarill, TX(Zone 7a)

Pat, you have been busy.

(Pat) Kennewick, WA(Zone 5b)

Yep, I have been racing thru projects. still so many more to finish!

How about you Linda? Do you have quilts in progress?

Susan is knee deep in moving prep I am sure!

Deb, how are the dogs doing?

northeast, IL(Zone 5a)

Went to shows last weekend. No competition in Afghans, so he was Best of Breed. Got to meet up with some friends I haven't seen in ages, so it was good. The weekend after next one of my boys is in a photo shoot. Anxiously waiting for June 9 when we go for the ultrasound to see if we have puppies on the way.
June 8th my kids are planning a "surprise" birthday party for me. I'll be 70 this year. Not sure how I feel about the party, but, they already had invites out when I found out.

(Linda Kay) Amarill, TX(Zone 7a)

I have been busy on puppy watch. They will be 3 weeks Saturday. Eyes are almost open, they are starting to walk very wobbly.

Not for sure i will be on DG much longer. Every time I have to log in again, and go through the process of finding watched threads. And each page literally takes 3 to 5 minutes to load.
This is getting so frustrating that admin refuses to answer our messages.

(Pat) Kennewick, WA(Zone 5b)

Oh Linda that sucks! There are a lot of things I do not like about the DG changes but I would miss you all so much.
Deb, Catching up with old friends is reason enough to enjoy the dog show! this past Sunday I went to a church event and was rewarded by seeing 5 different missionaries that had been previously assigned to my congregation. Once the missionaries get moved to another assignment, it's not uncommon to not see them again so I felt very blessed!

I got a 54 x 76 denim quilt off the longarm yesterday but still need to get the binding on. It's for a teenager that has a dog on his bed. The dog has been rather destructive to prior comforters. We are hoping that denim will last longer.

(Linda Kay) Amarill, TX(Zone 7a)

I bet that's a heavy quilt.

northeast, IL(Zone 5a)

It is so nice to be able to catch up with friends.
A denim quilt that size has to be heavy. Bet it would feel wonderful curled up under it on a chilly night!
Susan must be busy sorting and packing. She's been missing, or was she going away last weekend?

TORRINGTON, AB(Zone 3b)

Hi - still here, but busier than heck.
Monday my home buyer (Chuck) & I are going to the lawyer's to fill out the Offer to Purchase & use his Honda CRV as his downpayment. I really need a car - mine bit the dust last Friday when the brakes went. I was driving home & the pedal went to the floor. Mechanic (3 blocks from home) said to not drive it but to bring it in on Tues. I called Chuck & asked to get the Honda earlier, and I have his VIN# and Monday he'll transfer everything over to me. For now, I'm stranded without a car. Told my mechanic not to repair it so it sits in his yard.
Thursday I go to Winnipeg to look at 3 apartments for Aug 1st. Two are listed for immediate occupancy, so hope they're still available to view. Apartments are EXPENSIVE!!! I'm flying out on Thursday, and back on Monday, staying with my friend Karen.

(Linda Kay) Amarill, TX(Zone 7a)

Praying you find an apartment that you like and you can afford.

(Pat) Kennewick, WA(Zone 5b)

That's great news Susan, I LOVE my CRV!!! I hope you will too.

YES! That blanket is heavy! Denim is heavy enough on it's own but it's backed with a really plush minky. I used the minky as binding as well. I hope that does not end up a mistake. In the past I have used quilters cotton for the bindings on those quilts I have backed with minky or fleece.

(Pat) Kennewick, WA(Zone 5b)

I did get all 4 of the peach & mint quilts completed. The large is especially heavy as it was made with a plush forest green minky backing (recycled queen-sized blanket). I wish the colors in the pictures were more accurate. They are rich and bright, not the washed out look that the pics show. The big quilt is 70 x 82. All of the peach & mint are loosely interpreted "Flowers in the Garden by Sweet Jane's. The 12 inch blocks are consisted of 1@ 8.5 x 8.5, 1 @ 8.5x 4.5 & either 3@ 4.5 x 4.5 or 2 @ 6.5 x 4.5. There is a suggested layout and instructions for fat quarter which I totally ignored. The last pic is all 3 of the small quilts overlapping & on the audition board.

An apartment I called told me that their apartment is MINE (unless something changes for me........and it won't).
1020 sq ft, includes all utilities including TV and parking, and only $274 total more than I pay per month now - I can DO this! 17th floor, with a/c, dishwasher, an outdoor pool & a balcony. I have an appointment to view it next Friday at 10:30 Central time. IF I don't like it, I can go to the other 3 appointments for viewing that day, but this one's been recommended to me by 2 other people who either lived in the block, or know 10 & 20 year residents. It's a family owned building - 3 siblings. Their father built the apartment block way back when. It looks like about at least 20 floors. Ben, one of the siblings, said I'm the demographic they're looking to live there. It's not far from where I used to bowl, shopping center, and churches.
God is GOOD (but then, we already knew this!)

northeast, IL(Zone 5a)

That sounds perfect for you, Susan! Fingers crossed it's as good as it sounds. Things are all coming together perfectly for you!

(Linda Kay) Amarill, TX(Zone 7a)

Praying it's what you are looking for.

(Pat) Kennewick, WA(Zone 5b)

That certainly sounds like an answer to prayer! Having all utilities etc wrapped in the price helped reduce fluctuating expenses.

TORRINGTON, AB(Zone 3b)

I read today that they don't accept pets. I hope that doesn't include budgies. I wouldn't want to, but I would have to give them up, in Winnipeg.

northeast, IL(Zone 5a)

Hopefully they're thinking more of cats and dogs, that could possibly do damage.

TORRINGTON, AB(Zone 3b)

yes, my budgies stay in their cage and I only have to clean up their feathers lol
I saw a picture of their suites - a fireplace?!?! Great looking at Christmas!

(Pat) Kennewick, WA(Zone 5b)

I would bet that the budgies will be approved.

(Pat) Kennewick, WA(Zone 5b)

I cut the thick EXPENSIVE wool ironing mat to custom size & made a cotton cover for it.

I still have the table saw set up. I am going to customize an oversized cutting board Marie ordered. It is wider than any table we have (except the kitchen island). I have to wait until I have help. It is too awkward, heavy & flexible for me to handle it safely alone.

My hired help no-showed no called this morning. After me calling him (no answer) & texting, he texted that there was a problem and sorry he was not coming. I was ticked. I called my friend Jackie (he is her BIL & living with her), I told her what happened. He texted me later. No explanation, he tried to say he was sorry & would make it up to me (there is some language barrier). I told him I would give him another chance some other time, I already arranged for other help. (I called my teenager friend, Gabe, he is coming later today).

I hope all is well with you ladies!

TORRINGTON, AB(Zone 3b)

oh boy............. not coming, and no explanation? Sorry that the language barrier was a problem.
Tomorrow I fly to Winnipeg. I tried to check in with the airline, and it wanted me to pay again & wouldn't give me a boarding pass to print. Normally they charge $25 to have them check you in at the counter, but I spoke to their chat support & he said there's a website problem. I am successfully checked in, and can get my boarding pass at the counter for no charge. I have my bowling bag mostly packed, and getting a recommendation letter from my current landlord.

northeast, IL(Zone 5a)

Hope you have a good trip, Susan, and the apartment will allow budgies, and it's just what you want! We'll all be anxiously waiting to hear!

(Linda Kay) Amarill, TX(Zone 7a)

Praying for a safe flight, and the apartment works out for you.

(Pat) Kennewick, WA(Zone 5b)

How exciting! Let us know, take pictures!

northeast, IL(Zone 5a)

We're supposed to be getting smoke from Manitoba wildfires by this afternoon. Wisconsin already has an air quality alert for the entire state. I hope the smoke won't effect Susan's trip.

northeast, IL(Zone 5a)

Early day today. A few months ago I was contacted by a photographer who primarily does dogs and dog events, telling me she was looking for an Afghan to photograph for her portfolio. We finally got together this morning at Wind Point Lighthouse in Wisconsin at 5:30am. She said the lighting was best shortly after sunrise. It looks like she got some good pictures, she said she'll send me copies of everything, once she cleans up the photos.

These are a couple photos I took. The sky over Lake Michigan was a weird color from the Manitoba smoke.

Some great pictures Deb! I can't wait to see your professional dog photos!

I spent most of yesterday buying supplies and trying to fix our inadequate irrigation system. I am NOT happy with Lowes, defective materials mean wasted time and frustration.

I ordered a big white trellis to put on the front of the house. There is 116 between the 2 windows and all that blank gray wall. Soon it will have a 49 inch wide trellis to break that up. https://www.wayfair.com/outdoor/pdp/charlton-home-kerrimore-vinyl-arched-trellis-w005484811.html

Oh, that's pretty, Pat!
Wayfair opened a brick and mortar store near me. So many neat things, I can't afford to go there often. Too much that just has to come home with me!

TORRINGTON, AB(Zone 3b)

Last day in Winnipeg.
One apartment that I want is being held for me.
My friend Karen used to be a.mortgage broker and she has connections. She's trying to get me a condo in her complex
Both these places have an outdoor pool.
Cross your fingers.
Another apartment is nice with a good neighbourhood. I put an application in for an apartment there too.
One of the 3 will turn out

(Pat) Kennewick, WA(Zone 5b)

Sounds like a successful trip Susan.

We had a contractor here to work on the irrigation system. I am so tired I could fall over. Walking back and forth to test the different zones, turn water on & off etc etc. Then working to get house picked and ready for company.

Last week Marie took a LOT of fabric out to consider for backing & borders for a baby quilt she was working on. She did not get it all put back, I decided I'd do it rather than continue to wait. I got Marie's 2nd quilt on & off the longarm. last night. I still have the baby quilt to longarm. I'll post when she gets the bindings on.

We are expecting Marie's daughter Erin on Wednesday and lots of "events" this week with graduation of grandson & family party etc.

(Linda Kay) Amarill, TX(Zone 7a)

Pat, I really like that trellis. It's very pretty.
Susan, glad to hear you like your choices.
Deb, I can't wait to see your photos. They are beautiful dogs. Did you ever find out if the female is pregnant?
