Plant Propagation: The Basics January 2016

Anderson, IN(Zone 6a)

Yes Jen it might be a little fun , the pot , the distance ,,

Here is a Baby Bamboo ,, not one I expected ,,

Ooh, nice little Bamboo Ju, we can all watch it grow up to be a great big success. Here's hoping, I've got my fingers crossed for ya. Did Mingles get a second opportunity to get adopted?

Jen, you know when you 'Preview Post' and if there's no post in the bottom box, it will not post when you hit 'Post Reply'. It just happened to me last night. Is that what's happening when you lose your post?

Anderson, IN(Zone 6a)

Robin ,,, Mingles is still here ,,

Thank you for the hopes ,,!!! If it grows it will be my third success .

(Robin) Blissfield, MI(Zone 6a)

Aw, I was hoping the chance wasn't totally gone. Perhaps things worked out the way they should have.

Anderson, IN(Zone 6a)

None of several seeds showed or sprouted , still about a month or so that they might though , the small tiny , tiny , root piece produced the plant ,,
I need lots of practice to remember how to grow with Auxins , I use to have one that would grow green hair , on my scalp ,, Yes ,, I'm Bald on top ,, the snow melted ,,lol That green meant one live cell in any seed I could grow with that ,,

Northeast, WA(Zone 5a)

Thanks Robin, but no, when I lose posts it is normally in the middle of my typing, Very frustrating, but no, you must be wrong. I am the only one that has problems like that. Same to you JU. It isn;t like you said. It is normally in the middle of a post. Jen

(Robin) Blissfield, MI(Zone 6a)

Doesn't everyone want green hair? The snow melted, lol

As soon as it happens to me, I can help find an answer. I haven't a clue if I can't replicate it. I've heard other people complaining of losing posts Jen. I'm sure it's down-right aggravating. Have you tried asking admin, perhaps their IT has an answer.

Northeast, WA(Zone 5a)

Well Robin if that's the only problem I have I guess from the sounds of others, I am lucky. I'll go with that. Think it is the way I am sitting in my chair using my laptop and my hand hits the synopsis pad instead of the mouse. Yes, I know how to turn the pad off. But it doesn't stay off. jen

Fort Worth, TX

my laptop "mouse" (touchpad) and I also disagree and I lose stuff from all over, not just on dave's garden, which is why I have a regular wireless mouse and mousepad. When I first got my laptop I was ready to throw it out a window it was so frustrating, but I have learned how to position my hands so my wrists don't hit it often and I NEVER set it in my lap, lol

I use a desktop but whenever I use a laptop, I always plug in a mouse. I so dislike using the touchpad, probably because I refuse to get used to it.

I can imagine a laptop overheats if it sits on your lap.

Sprouts? What do you have sprouts of Debra? I am thinking about planting some of the wave Pansy seeds I have from last year. They like it cool, so maybe they would be able to live in this cooler weather. Have any of you grown them?

Anderson, IN(Zone 6a)

Jen Their pretty happy in cool weather I have seen Swiss Giant blooming through the snow at 28 degrees in February
One of my White blooming Half Hardy Hybrids is still standing . I have a few Skippy and Swiss Giants Planted in the garden ,

Debra Still More Congrats on the Sprouts

Only thing I know how to do with Computers is a Memory bite increase chip , and Backup drives ,

Northeast, WA(Zone 5a)

Thanks JU, I have heard that. Have you seen any wave pansys? I think they were new out last year. Of course I bought some seeds and don't believe I ever planted them. I will see if I have them. Don't know. Do you start them in the cool or warm?

Anderson, IN(Zone 6a)

Jen Their a cool weather Alpine plant Naturally I do not think it matters but I would say cool as in cold to us ,, Of course the wild purple and white bloom late spring , mostly shade here

Northeast, WA(Zone 5a)

Guess you mean that I should plant them and put them outside? jen

Anderson, IN(Zone 6a)

cute! Okay, so I didn't know about starting bulbs from seed, thanks for that new thing learned!

Fort Worth, TX

My iris throw seeds every once in awhile too, and my tropical lilies did, but I have never tried to raise the iris, as I have so many colors who knows what I would get. The lilies seem to be as Ju said, difficult to germinate. But they do occasionally shed some bulbs.

Northeast, WA(Zone 5a)

Did you start the Spider plants from seed JU? I didn't know they did, until someone sent me some seeds, made beautiful plants.

You get a line and I'll get a pole ba-abe. All I remember of that but bits and pieces of the rest. that Basil plants is so pretty. Very healthy.

Do you watch football Miipi? I used to watch it a lot more than now.

They are more nocturnal aren't they. No wonder they sleep all day. But, Tiger has been getting birds and it makes me so mad.

There's Debra!! Hi there. How was your weekend? Did you watch the game too?

Well, I suppose I should get busy. Haven't done much so far today, couple loads of laundry, sheets off the beds, etc. ttyl, jen

Anderson, IN(Zone 6a)

Yes Bulbs from seeds , takes about three seasons and a lot of watching ,

Jen the plants are what is left of roots after the Kittens got through ,

It is February , and Here I go ,, waiting on cold days ,, instant mad Scientist , time ,,,
Plant tissue culture coming ,,, yep ,,, a computer and containers , and poof ,, a Mad Scientist happens ,,,,

ohhhh I love a good Sci Fi "entist" what ya got in those test tubes? Howdy Jen, cold and windy here. ugh. I gotta take pics of the sprouts and show ya, I will do that later, at work right now. Are your temps still mild there?
Gypsy, Your chinese love plant is still hanging around, I am hoping I can shed a few plants, yours are on that list..
Robin, I thought you wanted something I had, too, refresh my memory?

Anderson, IN(Zone 6a)

Debra, Hello also , Those are destined to be more Bamboo , and old seeds , I am still searching for the formula I spaced off ,.. I had all kinds of different that people said the seeds were no good and they germinated really well for me , that was pre 2009 , I had 5 or 6 bamboo types and species ,,
sitting in my sprouter container mini greenhouse seeds I started back in may I was done with one , left a couple of seeds and they germinated and sprouted last week , either sprouts or Kale though , no place to grow them now .

(Robin) Blissfield, MI(Zone 6a)

A couple of loads or laundry and sheet off an on the bed sounds like plenty of work Jen. I don't watch football but I listen to it while I'm playing on my computer in the other room. Does that count?

Ju, can't wait for the plant tissue culture lesson coming. I sent off some of your seeds to a new gardener in Oregon that was looking for pollinator attracting plants. I'm sure they'll be very happy with the selection you provided. Thanks again for your generosity.

How are the chicks doing Gypsy, how many mealyworm eaters do you have now?

Debra, yes, I think you said you're going to give me ten of everything you have ;)

Anderson, IN(Zone 6a)

I put a post up here of what I was going to try and it went poof someplace ,, back later

Hendersonville, NC(Zone 7a)

JU I'm just atg the beginning research stage for tissue culture, so any guidence / advice would be VERY well received!

By me not reading descriptions thoroughly, I wound up with a few hellibores that are clones , but so far TC with hellebores seems drastically hard and barely successful.

Perhaps you could start by telling me what "explants" are and how I'm supposed to get meristems for Stage I. . . without destroying my only live plant (of thqat particular variety). . .

Anderson, IN(Zone 6a)

Bet NC I will look back through I believe explants are the cells for propagating ,I need a refresher myself
I have heard meristems ,, rarely I can get technical only even then a home spun sound about me there is ,,
and I am Jimard8 over there , you know ,, Hi ya ,,,

This page might help

I think I want a division from a hellebore plant if it won't have to be refrigerated for 4 months in order to bloom?

Fort Worth, TX

Robin, I have 5 pullets big enough to move to a coop tomorrow, 7 chicks I hatched plus 3 buff Orpington s from the feed store that are outgrowing the brooder and need the greenhouse run. I need ro repair 4 years damage to the big coop and run and want to put all 15 in there at once. My 2 youngest dogs have the highest prey drive so I want runs secure and me home to watch as I move them out. But they have done well in house

Gypsi ,, Sounds like that coming right along though ,, doing good ,

(Debra) Derby, KS(Zone 6a)

So, the dogs would go after the chickens? Am i reading this right? I wish I was there, I'd love to help you.
Instead, I am stuck at work, and have no idea when I will even be able to get outside here. LOL
What the heck... tissue culture? Does that mean you are making new plants out of some tissue? Hmmm.. I better watch you guys..

Fort Worth, TX

My dogs are trained NOT to go after chickens BUT I do not take chances and my youngest 2 dogs are still in training. Also they don't recognize chicks as chickens. I have come home from work to find that I forgot to hook the gate on the run and the birds came out to see the dogs in the yard. I had 3 half grown chicks at the time. The adult hens were fine, one chick was killed and 2 were injured and played dead (I saved both of those).

My youngest dog was desperate for a home and is a GSD mix and he worries me the most but on one occasion he did catch 2 hens. First one gave him a mouth full of feathers then played dead. She was in moult and I still have her. Second one he grabbed I was right by him and he dropped her on command and she is fine.

Still do not deliberately have dogs loose in yard with even the adult birds, and certainly not chicks or pullets (half grown birds)

Without the dogs I would lose birds and eggs to more snakes, possums, etc than I can count. If they are free ranging they are vulnerable to hawks as well, so I limit their range time and my pens have 1 inch chicken wire or netting roofs

ahhh, well, I think you need me down there to help you ...LOL

Anderson, IN(Zone 6a)

My home brew using old coffee grounds to keep a 5.5 ph for starting tissue culture and seeds .
Working on a feeding solution , nutrient goo ,, lol

Bet NC My mind thought A Typical lol when you said meristem
Meristems are the joint growth area of plants the Tip , the stem branching , near the leaf end at the stem
From plants the cloning cells are there , Take them as a tiny graft I would expect ,,
