I get a ton of catalogs, most of them seem to all have the same photos on different pages, with different names, come from Carol Stream, IL or something like that (I recycled the lot by giving them to granddaughter to cut up.)
Totally Tomatoes is one of my favorites, but I also really like Sand Hill Preservation Center (the search for sweet potato starts got me there, they are much better for all they don't come until June). I have ordered from Annies but wasn't impressed.
Burgess being one of the least expensive, I order slips for trees and shrubs from them and they do pretty well.. If you don't buy from Burgess do you have any recommendations?
Plant Propagation Basics November continued
Gypsi I have done well with all the above , except Sand Hill I have never ordered from
I don't have many recommends , better to let everyone decide for their self ,
I recommend this gal in Kansas named Debra though , I don't think she does bulk trees , lol
Hi Debra ,,
Sharon has Desert Sumac trees ,, ???

I think our climate is too far apart for a tree swap, they probably couldn't handle my heat, and my peaches are hot weather babies. But I did manage to give one away today to a guy that bought my tilapia to raise his vegetables with. Aquaponics is pretty cool. Peach tree will go in the ground
I'd love a peach tree :) I usually forget about the seeds in the fridge until about September, Jen, then I hurry to get them out :D
I have a tulip tree that is ready to send... Jen you are going to have to tell me when I can send you a ROS, and I have four sizes..
I also have a mimosa tree, and a small pecan tree to send out.
Gypsi Do you know the variety of the Peach you grow , ? The pear and one plum grow in zone 9 south Etc they like heat ,, Redbuds grow where you are , messy things they are though .
The wild Black Cherry is also native to Texas ,
it fruits in september and I have been trying to find the variety name for years. Bought in 2011 and lost the tag
Your right , Gypsi , That late in Texas is no chance here , probably ,
Oh well ,,, Thank you for the chat , about the trees and all , I will see how Debra's does ,
In the meantime I will look at scions for grafting ,
I always have to try , I love fruit from the tree ,
Debra, I can't remember if you are from here or not. When I was a kid, many many years ago, Broadway was lined with peach orchards between Wichita and Haysville.
If we get enough cold weather here to stratify seeds that are tossed they should be good other places also. We get below freezing many times and it can last for a day or a week. I toss all my Wildflower seeds and they sprout when rhe time is right.
www.wildseedfarms.com is a good source for seeds and directions on sowing them, anywhere in the US.
I have tons of wildflower seeds, from the country all over Kansas. Being a member of the Kansas Native Plant Society has been very beneficial to me.
Yes, Patti, I picked many a peach from those peach orchards, wish they were still around. I miss Meyers Nut Farm, too. *sigh* those were the good ole' days.
I have wildflower seeds from them, kept refrigerated, they are still good (I bought a very expensive pound a few years ago) and I toss them out each fall.
my problems are the borage and whatnot where I am paying $2 a packet for a tiny number of seeds and nothing sprouts. Not sure if they were feed store or I searched on amazon. I will buy anything to feed my bees some days
going to try and figure out what these peach trees are.
Debra can you grow Camellias in your zone?
I wish... I could if I had one, It would be downstairs or up in the spare room in the south window light.. I do have two kinds of jasmine.. sambucus and double "Grand Duke" oh and the cestrum nocturnum night blooming jasmine.. all of them smell wonderful, except I can't smell them anymore.
What do you mean you can't smell them anymore?
I ask because there's a beautiful Camellia grown by Gitagal in the Mid Atlantic Yardening forum she'll be trimming back in March and will be sending cutting to whomever thinks they can root it. If anyone can root it, I know you could.
http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/fp.php?pid=10176178&extraimg=0
I wish I could grow some of the Jasmines too, I just don't have anywhere to overwinter them. I'm waiting for the hardy cultivars to come to market, I may be waiting an awful long time.
I can't keep a jasmine alive here either, they must be very fragile. I have tried twice and the 2nd one I put on my fairly sheltered east side of the house.
Oooh that's a bummer Gypsi, I feel your pain.
OK, Deb, don't send me any but the ROS. And will have to wait until we are past freezing in the mail. As far as here, I will put it in the house so that would not matter. But shipping would. Same with the Jasmine. Would love to have one when it is not freezing to ship.
Thanks for the heads up on the Camellia Robin, I will dmail Gita.
Gypsi, I have had real good luck with Jung. Both live plants and seeds. I know a lot of people don't like them because, I think of their affiliates. However I go by that sometimes, but if I have had good luck with a company I will deal with them until they burn me.
BTW Robin, I see you asked Debra if she can grow camellias and she is one 6, I am zone 5 and I know there are some growing in this zone and it might depend on the kind of Camellia.
Yeah Sharon, I heard that about DAve also. But, I keep seeing these facebook entries from someone with that name. Must be a different one. And Sharon, I would love to have a couple of the Queen of Sheba seeds. I know they grow here, but have never seen that color here before. Jen
Jen, I would have never guessed zone 5a could sustain Camellias. I'll start looking for those hardy varieties. Thanks!
I've never seen a Camellia growing anywhere around here outside. I just came up from cutting back stuff and starting more cuttings . The red firespike is done blooming and ready to trim as is the snowqueen hibiscus. I got the firespike trimmed as well as the huge tub of kong coleus and lime coleus. I have sprouts of all kinds of morning glorys to help cheer me this winter. My tomatoes are blooming and I have tiny tomatoes, so cute.
I'll have to check into Gita's offer.. I am not looking forward to clearing out all the barrells on the back patio just to get new concrete poured. *sigh* That also means I have to have Joe dig up the bog pond, and take out the plants on the arbor closest to the sidewalk out back, my poor porcelain vine is going to freak out it has been moved three times already. Joe said he will not do anything until I am out there approving his work and giving him guidance. I am like"done" since I can't bend, pick up stuff, and dig like he can. makes me not want to do anything. *sigh*
Boy Debra I sure know what you mean. Is your stiffness just from doing too much and you need to rest a bit? Might try a couple of low mg Motrins. Sharon told me to try them so I did and they really work. The drs. asked me if I took anything besides my prescribed stuff and I told them yes, I took a couple Motrins if I felt I needed them, and they both said they would be no problem. Especially at that low mg.
When I was in my teens, many, many, years ago, my family moved to the Spokane valley to a house that had a real nice yard and I always remembered a red Camellia in the front yard. It was about 6 feet tall and just beautiful. That is why I know they will grow here, however, I think the darker colors probably are hardier than the light colored ones. The reason I say that , Is because I have had nursery people have told me that about Rhododendrons. Don't know that it is the same with other things. I guess I am doing just that. Guessing. >smile
I make and take turmeric paste, it has about cleared up the arthritis in my left knee, as long as I take it regularly anyway.
How do you take it Gypsi? Seriously, a tsp full? How often? Do you grow the turmeric? What is regularly? Jen
I started taking it twice a day last november. I buy Frontier organic turmeric either on Amazon or from swanson, Coconut oil and black peppercorns at costco, and because I also give it to my dogs, ceylon cinnamon - Frontier brand. (give the dogs this without the cinnamon and their noses smell like cat pee).
My rotti got a mast cell tumor last september, and had surgery but looked like dying in November so I made this paste and gave it to him - half a teaspoon twice a day - and he started bouncing around like a puppy. I started taking it a week later. It dropped my CRP (inflammation - creatin reactive protein I think) in my bloodwork from 11.9 to 2.5. Bronx, my rotti is still alive and we xrayed him last week and he does not appear to have any tumors now. So yeah, I will be on turmeric for life, this is some good stuff.
recipe on request. the stuff in capsules that is 95% curcumin may help but take them too long and I would be concerned about kidney damage. Organic is about 3 to 5% curcumin and has 600 other bioflavinoids we don't know much about. I take half a teaspoon to 3/4 teaspoon of the paste a day, Bronx and Bravo do the same (Bravo has elbow issues) the other dogs get half as much as they have no issues but it is good for them to stay healthy.
I eat two packs of mustard a day, while Joe takes the capsules. Love mustard. :D
Deb, what do you mean by 2 "packs" of mustard a day? What are "Packs"? jen
those little packs of mustard you get when you order take out food. I have bags of them. I suck one at work and one at home after I eat.
With the tumeric paste, you can make golden milk here's the why and the how recipe;
http://www.healthy-holistic-living.com/golden-milk.html
http://wellnessmama.com/223/turmeric-tea-recipe/
I am going to have to look at that tomorrow Robin. Sounds weird Debra. jen
Tumeric makes me sleep , Mustard , does all kinds of things , Probably why it is a staple ,
Greens , yellows , reds , and purples ,
Still to warm to sow , I am still setting up pots , will the next few days .

Very interesting Robin. I love the recipe for lip balm. Where do you get all that stuff to make it, health food stores? I see Gypsi listed some at Costco etc. Guess you would just have to look around huh? But, the containers for the lip balm? Things like that.
JU, how many of the cats do you have now? I think you have to keep them all. You are having way too much fun with them, and they really would not like going to someone else. You must tell Granny that. However, you have to have them fixed. I don't know at what age they might get pregnant or vice versa, but our vet said 4 lbs is when they like to spay the females. Don't know if that is the same for the males or not. But, I don't know, I think I would be keeping them by themselves pretty soon and weigh them every day if your vet goes by that. You better talk to them. Even if you give them away you don't want them to be pregnant. And you don't want any randy males, do they call it?, running around un-neutered. jen
We spay at about 2 lbs here with good success. With milder winters come huge feral populations. TNR, trap neuter release and rabies shot during neuter, and done free or $15th works best to manage
Nobody , animal control , humane , the animal services ,, I mean nobody is interested , after being swamped , The "pound" here went broke 2 summers ago ,
I don't know I am lost 118 $'s without help ,
Five now , three need , two to spay , one male ..
With th?e Christmas ,, I doubt I can
I will ask the national Humane society , maybe ?
juhur It may be that you just need to give one or all of the kittens to an animal shelter, maybe over in Muncie?. Then they neuter them and the new owners pay the fee. You have really done your part by keeping them and socializing them.
I feel your heartbreak, last litter dropped on me I kept 1, found a home for1 from Facebook advertising, and held 2 until the humane society finished redoing their barroom, fortunately while they were still kittens, about 4 months. Humane society fixed for 15 each on adults, did boy kittens for free when I ran out of $
Pistil I tried Muncie , said no , their full My family lives there ,
I will try to get the females done , A big part with cats Females usually last longer than the males , The big male feral is here and he kills other males ,
I don't even name the pets truly , I am not a sensitive , but to all the things that happen , Most of the responsibility , If you know it , it is on you (me)
The 14 year old I keep , I call camoflage , what he looks like , not really a name a refference really , answers to hey Bubba kitty , lol
If it gets to much i will try to get to Indy , a 25$ to start clinic there ,
In days past I would leave them like everyone else , But I am so tired of cleaning up dead Dogs , Cats , Raccoons and animals ,, No place for anything sometimes I guess , or something ,
JU, I'll kick in $25. Not much, but a start. As far as the Humane Society goes, at least ask. Let me know what you decide and i will kick it in to paypal.
Gosh, I cannot believe this football game. Minnesota has an 8 and 3 for the season so far, and the Hawks 6/5 and the score of this game is 28 to 0, Seahawks. 3rd quarter. Vikings are just terrible and the game is on their home field. Told Bob to give me the sports page so I could see if they were playing with the second string.
Nope, and Vegas picked Minnesota. The score now, in the 4th quarter is 38 Seahawks and 7 Minnesota. Makes a big difference when you don't have any penalties. Think last week they had more yards in penalties than they did forward yards gained. No penalties so far this week
