Plant Propagation Basics November continued

Fort Worth, TX

Debra,

Do you have any problems with stuff eating the cyclamen? I love them but they don't seem to live in the greenhouse, the house OR outdoors. In the greenhouse I think it was a rat

on where to get inexpensive t-5's, I paid $40 apiece for 3 light setups in an aquarium forum that has buy/sell/trade. The guy upgraded to LED's. some of those are on facebook, mine is both on facebook and on the internet. I could not spend another penny after I built the greenhouse. Paid $14.95 for the new shoplight for the garage. (It just makes sure I can see and don't trip.)

Lol, perhaps I can upgrade from shoplights one of these days Gypsi, thanks for the heads up on the deal. It's good to be able to see, we sure don't want to hear about any accidents like tripping over a rat. You always sound so busy, your energy level must be way up there with Debra's.

OK you folks out there, either guys or gals, this is a lecture, especially if you are single and/or living alone. You have got to have a cell phone with you every minute. Or, a life alert type thing and more than just in your house. And I am really serious. Some years ago ,my sister's S/O was not at home, and she went out to her greenhouse, in the dark, thru her garden equipment shed, because she knew where everything was.

Well she went thru a doorway and an equipment handle was stretched across the doorway, in the dark, and she fell and hit her head on the cement something. She did not have her cell, it was in the car parked about 40 feet away in the driveway. It was pouring down rain. She blacked out, and when she came to all she saw was a lot of blood from her head, and she realized that there was no way anyone was going to know where she was. She had to pull herself to the car, up thru the rest of the shed, the shop, and across the gravel driveway to the car to call 911. She told the dispatcher that she wanted her to contact me and have me come to where she was and go to the hospital with her in the ambulance. That is the message I got from the 911 dispatcher. When I got there, there were approximately 20 people standing around in the rain and she was sitting on the car seat with the door open and she was hanging outside the vehicle with rain running down her head. They were waiting for the ambulance, which they expected any time.

The reason there were so many people there was they were in a training session for new folks in the volunteer firemen when the call came in. What a training session that was!! Come to find out, the ambulance was 40 miles away and took almost an hour to get there. That driver was also in training and could not drive too fast. If I had known I would have put her in my car and taken her to the hospital myself. They kept saying it would be there any minute. She was in the hospital a couple of days, concussion, many stitches. Can you imagine what would have happened if she had not realized that she had no help coming?

That is why I always "preach" to all single folks that I know, to always have some form of alert system in their pocket at all times. PLEASE!! jen

(Robin) Blissfield, MI(Zone 6a)

Thanks for the lecture/story Jen. Even though the memory is painful, good things can come of it.

I have two cats I can trip over, it's at least smart to turn on a light and make sure things are where you left them. I had to learn that one quick.

last time I fell and twisted a knee , I fell over my own feet , turning around , uh yeah ,,, Duh ,,,
Once I fell down two flights of stairs , chip fractured a bone in the top of my foot , At least I walked away , after cursing out a sermon that would of burned a demons ear ,,

I will quit now .. I am waiting for the portable air bag for people , before trying much else ,,

(Debra) Derby, KS(Zone 6a)

:d ) U GUYS MAKE ME SMILE, THANKS.

Fort Worth, TX

Very good points Jen. one of my dogs dislocated my knee in the back yard in sept 2004, fortunately my old dog helped me up, and fortunately I was able to twist it back into position on my own, enough to get in the house, slap a makeshift brace on it. I was at home alone.

. Cell phone is generally in my back pocket, and yes I replaced the garage light on saturday because that is the most dangerous place on my property and it is pitch dark. I keep all the lights working all the time and a good supply of flashlights too. I do NOT use the one on the cell phone as it is too likely to help me break my cell.

when I work on the roof I make sure I have my cell and a neighbor spotting for me.

Yes I have a lot of energy. Never been a tv fan, that really helps.

back on thread - I have 4 or 5 seeds left from my dead and gone Carolina Jessamine. The bees adored its february blooms, does anyone know if they will start from seed?

and I just made a swap to get 18 fertile eggs, have to build an incubator. My old hens aren't laying but no one is broody either.

Anderson, IN(Zone 6a)

Gypsi , I don't know , must be to far north to know ,

Everything seems to be over my head and for the Birds lately , the pic ,

I will do some wintersow today , a few poppy seeds and few daylily , almost 60 the forecast , nice this season ,,!

Saying hi and Happy Thanksgiving ..

If I don't get a chance to check back in, Happy Thanksgiving everyone!

(Robin) Blissfield, MI(Zone 6a)

I have to echo what Patti said and wish everyone a Happy Thanksgiving too. Thanks Patti.

Northeast, WA(Zone 5a)

Well Gypsi, if asking Debra about starting the Carolina Jessamine doesn't work, as a last resort, I think you might try planting the seeds!!

Also, hope you built the incubator before you took the fertile eggs home. >smile<

One more think Gypsi, must be pick on Gypsi day. When you are working on that roof, please do not hook the other end of that rope to the bumper of a vehicle. A chuckl for you this time.

In case you all get too busy and won't be back, I too am wishing you all a wonderful, delicious, Thanksgiving. I have no intentions of not being back. ttyl,

Happy Thanksgiving to you all. If I were you, Gypsy, I'd start those seeds in January. :)

Love that you have those eggs.. we used to have a great grandma that had an 8 "story" incubator and chics all winter. it was fun. It was like 8 shelves with lights and on rollers. we had a hen house. we raised chickens geese, ducks and rabbits for food back then.
before I got the T5s installed I just use as high of lumins clamp lights in the incubator sockets clamped all over the ibeams on the basement walls and used as high of lumins wattage I could find in all sockets , then I got the plant lights and then the shop lights and it has just spiraled into what it is now. Somewhere here, I have a thread from way back then titled my winter basement gardens..

Wow, that's got to be a record for views and replies. Lot's of cool stuff in that SheCave!

Fort Worth, TX

That is an Amazing She cave! Debra I will try to start the seeds in January, right now the greenhouse is chuck full of bargains from Ace Hardware and I made another haul at Lowes today (a freeze heads this way and they mark stuff way down - I even got 3 cyclamens for $1 apiece - with my survival rate that's like a lottery ticket)

Jen, what rope, I just go up the ladder with a bucket of tar in one hand with a plstic spreader in the bucket, and a cell phone in my back pocket. One story house, not a lot of pitch on the roof, and I only go up in dry weather.

Incubator isn't built yet, but as long as I turn the eggs twice daily and keep at room temp I have a couple of days. I picked up the materials today before stores close for thanksgiving. My friend doesn't come into town often.

oh, I am tired. Picked up materials to toughen up the main chicken coop but didn't get them on. Moved my trailer to its winter parking place, didn't get the rain cover over it and we are forecast 3 to 6 inches tomorrow and friday.

Have some little tarts? pudding pies? to make with a graham cracker crust, tapioca pudding from scratch using coconut milk which came out really tasty, and I am going to make a sauce for topping with fresh raspberries or black berries or both (whichever one comes out best goes to dinner). And I might make sweet potatoes. Going to a daughters, ex husband does most of the cooking. He actually uses recipes. After 14 years we can manage a very peaceful dinner.

(Robin) Blissfield, MI(Zone 6a)

Oh Gypsi, if you need an experienced palette to do some taste testing, I could squeeze such a favor in for you...lol. I'm making a Custard pie and a Pecan pie for dinner at my Son's, I'll get it all together tonight and bake it in the morning.

Fort Worth, TX

I don't know if it would ship well but once I have worked the recipe out and written it down I can send that Robin. :)

I am allergic to cow's milk and pumpkin pie just murders me with all that condensed milk. I am considering trying to make pumpkin pie with coconut milk sometime between now and christmas, and maybe using tapioca for part of the thickening?

in the meantime there will be ONE dessert I can eat tomorrow, the one I take

(Robin) Blissfield, MI(Zone 6a)

I'm pretty sure you can spoon pie into a jar and send it Gypsi...just kidding but I do know entrepreneurs have done that, I saw it on Shark Tank. I've gone dairy free before to see if I had an allergy (I don't). I really like coconut and almond milk though. I hope it works out exceedingly well for you. I don't think you'd need any other thickening agent, the eggs set the pumpkin. Perhaps you've already tried a recipe without thickening it further; have you? If you're sure it needs that extra step, back off the coconut milk and add another egg.

Mmm, can't wait for Thanks Giving dinner.

AllI can say to above is : Food !!!

Lets see now , what can I picture prattle about on a 50 degree Thanksgiving morning .?
The 2nd photo is the food processor blade , it cuts good dry , and so forth , on a 1/150 th Hp motor it would be better with three blades on a pizza cutter size balancer , Hugefor what it is ,

The first is 1/20 th Hp much more powerful I will test when the shroud and motor protector shield are done , also , the clog drag of wet material to be overcome , shielding and gaurds can overcome the drag clog , Takes a while for me to figure it out , it does not matter on larger more powerful machines ,

3 One kitten became two while the snap was done ,

4 grab the pants leg and bounce back two step ,
5 same ,, replying mew and here I come ,

You're right about the Potato chip thing. LOL how old are the kittens now?

My kitchen door is all glass and I have two bird feeders hung on the back porch about 2 1/2 feet away. One of the feeders is suet and I have a fairly steady parade of birds visiting that. The cats informed me there was a woodpecker on it yesterday when they started doing their kitty chirping. That is so cute! Because I live on a very busy street the cats Must stay indoors. I'm sure they get frustrated, but I love birds too and don't want my cats bringing me any presents. LOL

I also have a thistle feeder on the back porch but I can't see it easily. The seed quantity hasn't dropped so I may end up having to move it. It doesn't look like anyone has found it yet.

It's raining here. We really need the rain but I haven't seen any bird activity so far today. Wow, it's really raining here.

Anderson, IN(Zone 6a)

Patti , the Kittens were born on Sept 16 ,There will be two months old on Dec 16 .
I have the Hummingfeeders in now I will have to see about the seed feeders , Have some Devils tickseed and sunflower seeds laying on the outdoor table for the winged visitors ,
A few hours from now I will be on my way to see family , As before only a few of us this season , everyone else is into something , going other directions ,

Fort Worth, TX

I miss kittens, yours are adorable Ju. I guess I got all the ferals fixed, been a couple of years since I was blessed

(Robin) Blissfield, MI(Zone 6a)

That last 'Mew' pic sure is adorable. That's how you can put up with the pant-leg two-step, that little scamp...

Hope you're all well fed and happy little campers, I imagine many naps are happening right about now.

Fort Worth, TX

we had gotten 2 inches of rain at 10 pm and still more coming, supposed to get 3 to 6 inches this weekend. The leak on the garage roof is better but still leaking - it starts at the top flashing, fortunately there is no sheetrock ceiling in my garage, 3 buckets in a line since I took down the old sloping light box that directed it all into one stream. Been fighting this a couple of years. fixing the bottom hole can move the leak somewhere that it can do more damage.

(Patti) Wichita, KS(Zone 6b)

We received over 2 inches yesterday and now it's sleeting. Glad I get to stay home today.

Anderson, IN(Zone 6a)

Not started here yet , but the wind is up it is cooling some , and I am not looking forward to that , rain with sleet ,
Well it is still almost 60 degrees , I might go plant some Delphiniums but this weather is crazy . my December winter sow may have to wait until January , (sigh

This is my handi craft , this is the 1953 to 1963 -67 , Home garden mulcher by Sunbeam I believe ,,
I had seen a few back then , Mine is cardboard , their's was thin metal .
I guess I made a "cheap" ? copy of that , lol
If it does thin branches like their's had I will smile , smile , smile ,, and cheer up , and Put on a happy face

I am still full from yesterday ..Burp !!! , oooh gross Uncle ...

It sounds like we are vacillating between freezing rain and sleet. I realize there is a difference but they both equal slick. Thankfully, I have animal friendly ice melt stuff in the coat closet.

I had all the turkey, dressing, etc.for lunch at 12:30 but dinner was a salami sandwich. LOL
I'm about to go make sausage, scrambled eggs and toast. I am hungry. LOL

Nice job on the garden mulcher. Play with those kittens – they will give you a happy face.

Anderson, IN(Zone 6a)

Rain and sleet and light rain here now , door knobs cold , kittens are in the garage , the only one in here is this morning
The weather look at this face .lol 1 says it
2 is how he usually looks , about to celebrate birthday #14 actually this old fudd

14 is a pretty good age for a tomcat – especially if he goes outside. I've come to realize that I do love cats. After my last calico, who was a real piece of work, I swore off cats. I'm so glad I changed my mind.

I just let the dogs out and neither one cared for it one bit. I don't either LOL. I'm getting ready to put the turkey carcass in a stock pot. I normally add a carrot when I'm making stock but I'm out of carrots today and have no plans for getting any.

Fort Worth, TX

I almost forgot the drumstick I brought home to make soup/stock with. Thank you Patti! Have to drain my lot, apparently got 6 inches of rain. and go to grocery store. Not an egg in the house.

Northeast, WA(Zone 5a)

Not an egg in the place Gypsi?? You better get those fertile eggs hatched and growing!! Or, maybe use one of those for your cooking today? LOL ugh!

JU, I hate to tell you this, but Dec 16 those kittens will be 3 month old CATS! Not 2 month old kittens. LOL, they are a lot easier to get rid of when they are cute kittens than when they are full grown cats and starting to get pregnant. Better do something about them now. You are having too much fun with them. Sorry to burst your bubble.

You better enjoy that warm weather you guys. It was 11 degrees here last night. Better cover those new plants up JU, this cold is coming to you next. jen

Anderson, IN(Zone 6a)

Jen it has already been well below freezing here a half dozen times ,
As to the kittens I just took the gals word for it ,, Just What I need , you , scolding me ,for believing the gals ,, lol yeah ,,,
Yes I guess Sept 16 to Dec 16 would make them 3 months old ,, Hey you can still count , , lol
Oh well Smarty me ain't ..

oh Gypsi , there might not be any eggs in the store either ,two gallons of milk the day before yesterday was all there was at the supermarket here ,, HEY ,,, MAN .... FOOOOOOD !!!!

This message was edited Nov 27, 2015 1:02 PM

Northeast, WA(Zone 5a)

Well JU, if you read my last post on the other thread I was scolding you for something else too. LOL, You really are a sweetie even if you do take the gals word for everything.

(Patti) Wichita, KS(Zone 6b)

You're welcome, Gypsi.

Jen, I would take that calico at any age – if Ju didn't live so far away and if I didn't already have two other cats - Who may in fact be cats due to age, but were just leaping around here like to spring lambs. LOL That little calico looks like "here comes trouble". ROTFL Not that I have a favorite or anything. They're all really cute.
