was that a gopher on the other thread? What a great shot of whatever that was, Ju. My white cinderella milkweed is done now and loaded with pods, the tuberosas are still blooming like yours part shade part sun, and out front the same. I keep waiting for the monarchs. I think the lilys may be up, I don't look for them to do much this year, tho.tigers are about finished, so is the double tiger, just a few tall double orange and the wild reds open now. kopper king and white prennial hibiscus are blooming, so is red silene.
didn't get one single pear this year, the tree rats got them all.

Oh you guys your pictures are so great. Yeah, gopher Debra. I knew the spelling was all wrong on mine. Thanks. Isn't he cute. Too bad they are so destructive.

JU, I thought that was Aschlephia. Or whatever. I got one for my mom, a butterfly bush. It was seeds and then grew into a tuber, and now my sister has it. It blooms and is beautiful every year.

I am really late on all of my gardening this year. Just hate it. Feel so bad about it. But, it is too late to worry about it now. I don't think I want to plant seeds now, it would be such a waste. I didn't get any of the zinnias etc. in this year. Just makes me sick. Oh well, next year is coming soon. Faster than we want.

Think I will read a bit and hit the sack. jen Thanks for the new thread JU.

Baby Ground hog in the pic ,, Clover like rabbits , their favorite .

Debra Gardens are looking great there ,, real nice ,,

I have been trying to germinate a bunch of seeds from 2009 , I got real ill about that time and just found the bag , Gonna be close , real nice butterfly plant seeds ,, hope , hope , hope ,, a few of Debra's gift seeds I am still trying to get growing also .

Purple Knapweed (centaura scabiosa) seeds

So JU, when you plant those kind of seeds, how do you plant them? with the hairs sticking out of the dirt? Whole thing buried? Or? Good pictures.

Anderson, IN(Zone 6a)

I drop them I cover thinly I don't even usually plant them , Couple of my planters I uncovered today , Kind of heavy still ,, Yes I am still playing at that ,
Planted for sprouting some Swamp Milkweed in the Sprouter ,
Two fairly nice plants All I currently have growing ,, My Giant lillium are blooming real nice today ,,

Northeast, WA(Zone 5a)

So these plants won't finish their cycle of the season when frost hits them?? That is why I don't plant late. jen

Anderson, IN(Zone 6a)

Milkweeds and fennel from seed do not usually grow or bloom until their second season anyway Like most perennials as long as they have a good root and are 6 or 8 inches tall or so , they will return ,, Perennials late summer early fall planting , unless you want to wintersow ,
Great crop of Mosquitoes still coming in , this year ,,

Northeast, WA(Zone 5a)

I don't have many mosquitoes, but tons of fruit flies. We have a compactor and even tho we rinse out the cans etc before putting them in there, the fruit flies are horrendous. I will have to remind Bob to rinse the cans and not put garbage in there. Even tho we have a disposal in the sink, you can't put a lot of stringy type stuff, banana peels etc. in there as it does plug the unit.

So many things. Bob has been using the new dishwasher and really likes it. Good. I haven't used it that much, but read all the pamphlets on it. He uses it but doesn't read anything on itl.l Oh well, he might end up being sorry. We'll see.

Going to bed, ttyl, jen

(Debra) Derby, KS(Zone 6a)

I grew this from a seed last year, this is year 2..
Joe took the old wagon and un- assembled it since the wheel base was rusted and falling off, then he drilled holes in it and saved the cart part, t is perfect to sink into a flower bed for a bog garden, my american bell flower and cardinalis will do well in it.
You are doing great Ju. I also have planted more seeds and have baby milkweeds coming up in that triangle I told you I planted a lot of seeds in. I will take a picture of what is up now, tomorrow, after work. Work is just crazy right now, and very hot.
Jen, I use sticky traps of fruit flys, have one taped on the backsplash where the tomatoes sit, and lots of them around in the basement where the turtles are, since they eat fruit too. I have a tall narrow water bottle filled with tomatoe guts from a Joe's Roma tomatoe I grew, and it is full of dead fruit flies, so maybe give them something to go into for your kitchen, they can be trapped and then die. They love anything fruit, so drop a piece of over ripe something into a bottle with a small opening, and add a tad of water ( I use an inch. )
Joe made this pie, it is ricoota pie and blueberries and lemon zest blended and put into a graham crust. Yummy!

Debra nice Hibiscus ,, Nice unusual pattern in the Bloom , it is a Hibiscus ? lol

I started to compliment your flowers on the other thread as well ,, really great ,pretty ,,
My green thumb with complicated plants seems to have taken a vacation , I am still good , at least all right with native or weed type plants .
When I am doing things wrong I usually know what I am doing wrong ,

My Syricus and the White Lillium , you have seen them before Both the Syricus came from seed .

By the way ,, I want that pie lol , even more than my evening green tea , yum , yum ,,,!!!
Delicious goodies !!!

Northeast, WA(Zone 5a)

Gorgeous flower Debra. Is it a Hibiscus like JU thought? I guessed that also. Beautiful. I just read Bob your instructions on the fruit flies. we will try it. Thanks. A bob garden would be beautiful. Right in the middle of Joe's lawn where it would show it off so much. LOL, something for him to use the weed eater around all the time.

Ju, your flowers are beautiful too. Sure hate to think about not seeing any in a few months. That is why summer is so great. Even with hot weather. Yes, we have fires burning all around us, but far enough away that we shouldn't have a problem. Hard to believe it is the end of July. Haven't gotten out at all this summer, and just on the deck once in a while. Will work on that for the next month. yeah right.

Thanks everyone, Joe is home all day now, so he can water and cook for me. we moved the tomatoes from the pots to the empty bean patch, Joe had it all dug, turned over, bug sprayed and fertilized, raked out.. he dug the holes for the plants, some had cages and we moved them cage and all. He still has a nice patch of potatoes that I have talked him into leaving for fall so they will be big. We have eaten all the ones in pots, and now those pots hold coleus monsters, and cuttings rooting from all the shrubs. another one has the plumeria Y cutting that made it and Indian paintbrush and sedum in it.
That hibiscus came from seed.. Moshetues or something like that. the large white one is dying stalk by stalk, like something is attacking it. it is a mystery since the whole stalk from top to bottom looks unscathed, but the leaves and buds all drooping.
I have three more, but the largest oldest one is Kopper King.
I started a lot of syricas from cuttings and seeds, I have so many kinds they grow real fast..

Yes Indeed Debra ,Great Blooms !!!

Northeast, WA(Zone 5a)

You guys work so hard on your yard and gardens. And all after working so hard on your jobs. I certainly hope your neighbors appreciate the view. And then to have to go home and get dinner on etc. Good thing you don't have little kids at home yet. LOL, or do you?

Yes, forgot Gemma and all of them. They all are a lot of work aren't they? I think that is what keeps you young Debra. Thank God for that. LOL, Does that help? Bet you are tired. And JOe too.. He works hard and then comes home and plows up the beds to plant the tomatoes. I have never heard of transplanting tomatoes when they are that big. Only Debra would do that. LOL, good for you. Jen

Anderson, IN(Zone 6a)

Mine looks like a swamp field with most hidden , I will work on it a while ,, next year the year after eventually I will get control again ,, (I Hope )
one tray I got planted , some rather unhappy False aster (bolton's ) Lost a couple small seedling pots , dry cooked in one afternoon while I was away , Most of my plants light lean in one long place I want to grow something in , difficult ,
I seem to be back to mostly yellow flowers , oh well ,,
Nice thing is I still get blooms ,
When younger I could keep up , to slow now ,, it;s beginning ,, yes that .. something to do with age ? maybe ,? Yes,, a not so funny joke ,,

Northeast, WA(Zone 5a)

JU, lotsa company on that one. I can't even begin to tell you how much I have slowed down. But, don't like the alternative either, so be happy with what you have, and what you can do.

LOL, not lecturing you, just reminding you what beautiful flowers you have, and I didn't see just yellow. I saw a lot of beautiful flowers you posted. In case you have forgotten, just go to the chat thread on the Back Porch. Better yet, go out and stand in one place and look around your yard.

I want to see some blooming ones in your planters you have been making. Will be just gorgeous. The cement will make the plants stand out so nice. What would really be nice would be if you had the room with the temperature etc. to make those in the winter. What a great project that would be!! A wonderful way it would be to spend the winter. Oh well. Figure it out. >smile<

(Debra) Derby, KS(Zone 6a)

Hi all, hard day at work today, but yesterday before work I got to tour the back yard, and this am, I took pics of the front triangle where I planted all those seeds. Any way. here are just a few shots.. by the way, Joe is retired, he does everything I used to do while working and raising the kids, no kids at home anymore, never see the grandbaby, so it is really work come home, eat supper with Joe, and head out until dark to cut back, transplant or just pick off bad leaves. My heaven of sorts, Joe does this all morning until it gets hot, then he stays in and gets the housework done. I'm really lucky.
I want to see those planters, too, Ju.
milkweeds and sunflowers, and stuff, patio.

Gorgeous pictures Debra. I think Joe is lucky too. Bet he thinks so too. >smile< How long has he been retired? How long have you been working? Think you said you have been there for quite a while. So, if you like the life you have, and what you are doing, you are very lucky. Both of you. jen

(Debra) Derby, KS(Zone 6a)

Joe has been retired almost 2 years, he is quite used to being home and me at work, since that has happened so many times when he was laid off for long periods of time over the 40 years he worked at Lear Jet. He built the 60 model and then they stopped making that model, well he has been with three models that are retired now, as is he LOL. One time he was laid off collecting unemployment, while I worked, he was the at home Dad for the kids about three times in their lives. I went back to work when he got laid off the first time. I have worked non stop except the year and a half into the marriage. Before Joe, I also worked and the two men before him would not work. I decided to pursue Joe and it took a couple tries, but he caved. :) here we are 37 years later. I know what he doesn't like and he the same for me and that helps a lot. The grass is his. the bean patch and potato patch is his, and he is fond of the blooming plants and shrubs. That helps. He wished I would be neat and tidy, with rows all the same color and such. I just can't seem to do it. His little sister, however, is quite good at it, but she doesn't work, so she has the time, and up in Buffalo, it is cooler than where we are. Here are a few her gardens..

I haven't worked much since injury and ailments have me ,,If you listen to most around me , They will say I never did ,,
I don't reply to much about it ,, Plant talk , a little life goings on ,,
Anything real personal , I won't say ,,

Debra , real nice place and flowers ,Sets are Magnificent !!! I can grow plants sometimes , but I am not a true gardener , never will be really ,
This is a delightful time of year when able to enjoy ,!

Debra her place is very nice, the pictures are very pretty, but don't tell Joe, I like yours much better. Yep, his part of it too. Much nicer.

Well JU, I used to be much neater when I could. Haven't been able to for a couple of years. That is one of the reasons I would like to move from here. 'cause I can't do the work I used to. But, I enjoy things like you are doing with your pots etc. But, NOT visitors like that long legged one!!

What is it? Boy, does it have long legs. Very colorful too. Now the next one of the butterfly is very pretty too.

(Debra) Derby, KS(Zone 6a)

great shots, Ju. I miss my garden spiders, they have not shown up this year? They sure ate a lot of bugs in years past. My senna year two is three times as big as last year with multiple new stems and loaded with buds.
Jen, is it cooler where you are at? We have had such a wonderful non 100's summer so far. Just really humid so the 90's seem hotter.
Vitex on south arbor fence.. I have two of them, they are a kansas wild flower shrub.. the back tree where the critters get fed, North arbor holding passion vine, cukes, tomatoes and mgs..
patio table garden ( under the outside of the table) cukes, tomatoes and mgs.,Can u see the cukes? ( last pic)

Thumbnail by joeswife Thumbnail by joeswife Thumbnail by joeswife Thumbnail by joeswife Thumbnail by joeswife
Northeast, WA(Zone 5a)

Yep, I like yours. I did see the cukes. gosh, Debra how do you have time to keep them all watered etc? Joe probably waters those with his lawn huh? That sure helps a lot.

Does Joe cook dinner for you when you are working? Bet he does. That is great.

(Debra) Derby, KS(Zone 6a)

Joe does not water the lawn, but he does water the gardens if I leave him a note. I do come home to cooked meals now. He does it all..

remember when I told you I planted a bunch of seeds late out front in the triangle?
still need to get a pic of the banana that came up from last winter.. the one out front stayed inside all winter.

Debra , That is Some Nice Gardening !!!

Northeast, WA(Zone 5a)

Very nice triangle Deb, and that banana!! Is that the one from last year, or the one in the house that I can see is in the ground now? Very good.

Anderson, IN(Zone 6a)

You should be able to grow at least one outdoors , I had an outdoor Banana tree for a couple years it died the third year outdoors , drowned during a flood season ,
When you grow those here they have to be raised up and mulched to the extreme , Still a couple snapdragon seedlings , a pot with a Balloon flower got dragged off or disappeared someplace ,, that is not funny anymore , I use to laugh at that , I still grin and give an,, oh well ,,

Some of the seeds from Debra I am going to try wintersowing , Got a few to sprout though ,
Be back with pics in a while

Northeast, WA(Zone 5a)

Ju, what did you mean that when you grow them there they have to be raised up and mulched to the extreme? You mean every year you have to do that to them:? I remember seeing a palm tree growing in Seattle ford years. Kept an eye on it and it really did. I t lived for years. Far as I know, it is still there.

I'll bet you do real good wintersowing seeds from Debra.. I might try it gain. Maybe with those seeds for Obedient Plant. Bet that would do real good. Gotta start saving containers. But, my sister always has tons of gallon milk jugs. Her sons over there drink a lot of milk.

(Debra) Derby, KS(Zone 6a)

gallon jugs are great for winter sowing. I am going to try a bunch of perennials from seed by direct sowing in Fall. I have a ton of plants to thin, Jen, if you want plants to put in ground in fall, just let me know, I can send out the cut back thinnings I am doing on the obedient plant and monarda . have some chameleon plant ( shade) too. holler up.
will have seeds from this tall wild flower as well http://www.illinoiswildflowers.info/prairie/plantx/royal_catchflyx.htm
and some of these...http://www.illinoiswildflowers.info/prairie/plantx/obed_plantx.htm
some of these shade lovers..https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Houttuynia_cordata

Anderson, IN(Zone 6a)

Jen A place or set for them , too much water most of the time here , years like this one , they rot .. Winter mulching them is difficult also ,

Debra That is some great garden flowering ,I remember seeing the Royal Catchfly as a youngster , plains , prairies , and fields ,

A steady rain day here , not much outdoors at all ,,
Ground hog came for dinner yesterday , Ate a Milkweed . Two BES , A lillium bulb , My baby Campanula seedlings and the Bellflower and pot I cannot even locate ,, I do not enjoy that animal ,, really I don't ,,, furry little Monster ,,,

Northeast, WA(Zone 5a)

JU, what did you mean a pot with some snapdragon seedlings sand balloon plants got dragged off?? What happened to them? The Musa Banana is more hardy isn't it?

That's a nice offer Debra, I do want some Obedient plants, but as far as the wild flowers go, I don't really like to plant things i don't know about because of the Noxious Weeds. What grows good in one area some states can cause havoc in others. I bought some Chia seeds that i really wanted to try to see if the deer would eat them when so much of their food has dried up in the fall and winter, but i called the Weed Control Board and they are invasive to this area. Darn it, I thought I had a good idea.

Debra, what are the 3 pictures ? I really like the last one. What is that one. And the orange flower. Very unusual.

So JU, why not put a banana plant in a large pot with legs that can hold it out of the soil?
Do you think the groundhog ate the other stuff? What happened to the pot? I originally thought you meant the kids took the pot with the flowers and all. You have to keep planting flowers since the animals are eating them one by one. You might end up doing as I do and planting everything in containers. Don't know what would keep them out of those too?

Next you are going to have to start making raised beds. That should do it. Use hardware cloth in the bottoms.

(Debra) Derby, KS(Zone 6a)

I should send Ju my animal trap.. LOL sorry Ju, dANG IT! Jen, all my flowers are noxious LOL
I don't eat them, neither do the critters, kids or pets. I have never been sick from touching handling smelling or snipping. I am bare handed most of the time. Obedient plants are very fast spreaders. the multi colored leaf is a shade plant that also spreads fast.
morning glory jaimie lynn, orange milkweed, helenium, cone flower, hummer..

Thumbnail by joeswife Thumbnail by joeswife Thumbnail by joeswife Thumbnail by joeswife Thumbnail by joeswife
Northeast, WA(Zone 5a)

Debra, I don't think the noxious is so important as the invasive. That is the kicker. Don't like too many things we can't control. Just take over. What is the Jamie Lynn? Very pretty. What are the last ones you posted. I really like the last one, the 3rd one.

And the first one, the orange one in those three is very unusual. What is it?

Well, guess I will hit the book again and then go to bed. I am tired. Sat in line waiting for road work this morning and was late for my hair appt. Thank heaven for cell phones. Nice to be able to call and say you are going to be late so they don't give your time slot away. But funny, her next appt. called and cancelled too so my time was good.

'nite,jen

Anderson, IN(Zone 6a)

Debra That ground hog eats on syrica Milkweed , that is one of the most noxious , poison plants there is ,, Thank you for the trap offer ,, but I can handle losing a few . but it almost walked up to me a couple days ago , and that cannot be accepted ,,( gun go bang !!! legal or not )
Since they disappeared , I broke down yesterday and bought a pink and a blue Bellflower. , ought a red coneflower unmarked , untagged ,, the people give that for half price , lost tag ,,,

Jen yes an easy mulch pot ,, setting up in partial shade would be ideal , for a hardy Banana tree ,

Anderson, IN(Zone 6a)

Pretty flowers Debra ,, The humming bird is delightful !!! something about them makes your mood feel so good ,, nice creature ,

Some of the morning glory and a Sunflower , you have seen these before .Red coreopsis on the end.
