Plant Propagation ,The Basics Continued July 2015

Northeast, WA(Zone 5a)

Very pretty pictures you guys. Gosh JU, you're going to turn into a butterfly/ Wonder if you get to pick the kind and colors. LOL, you seem to have lot of different ones. Are they flying around you all the time? You just have the camera ready. Good shots.

Anderson, IN(Zone 6a)

I keep planting for them , the Butterflies and I will keep at it , Tree pots for large Bonsai as their host ,
I started a few more but I have to slow down until I container get equal .. lot of plants ..

Northeast, WA(Zone 5a)

So what do you do , just keep planting and they keep growing and blooming, no matter what time of year it is? Jen

Las Vegas, NV(Zone 9a)

JU, I copied this photo from Facebook for you..

Hey Sharon ,, That is Jen's Concrete block garden ,,
nice that sure is !!!

Northeast, WA(Zone 5a)

LOL, could be JU. Maybe I just didn't keep mine wet enough.

Las Vegas, NV(Zone 9a)

As you can see Jen, those are succulents so they can stay on the dry side. Here cinder blocks suck up all of the water. I would only use them if I sealed them to keep them from sucking up the moisture. I do have some in the garden. I use them to raise pots higher behind other pots. But if they were sealed and placed in a corner like that, it would be a great garden feature.

Northeast, WA(Zone 5a)

Wonder how they would do in our cold winters.

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

Jnette

I have found that a regular 5" -6" plastic pots can fit into the openings of the cinder blocks.
This would alleviate all the problems (if any) of growing plants right in the blocks.

Gita

Northeast, WA(Zone 5a)

You're right Gita. Could even figure a way to put soil mix around the pots if that would be better. Might even find that like Sharon said that it would not be too dry for some of the plants like she showed. They were very attractive that way. Stick a couple in the corners outside the pots and try it.

Anderson, IN(Zone 6a)

A few plants I am trying, some indoor some outdoor

First two are Black Willow their may be a White or Desert Willow in with them
3 &4 Are Desert Sumac tree seedlings from Sharon ,

Sharon, those Sumac have beautiful, narrow leaves.

Northeast, WA(Zone 5a)

Oh wow, I was just writing on here and a big yellow jacket or something lit on my screen. I beat up on it and Bob came and got it and put it out side.

I was going to say, is that the yellow one JU?

Northeast, WA(Zone 5a)

I was going to say that I think it is time for a new thread on the other one????

Las Vegas, NV(Zone 9a)

I will try to take a photo tomorrow, from across the street of my front landscape Sumac. Not exaggerating, at least 20 feet tall and over 15 feet wide. When it was planted it was probably 4 feet tall and about as wide but that was in 2001.

Sorry about your palm. I will pull some seedlings and put them in the holding garden. Then when they get a good hold, I will send you roots and all for your palm section of your landscape.

When I sent the statement above about the first two photos, I went outside, removed some leaves, placed them on the table an then pulled up your photos. Identical. I will take a photo of them tomorrow also. But I am sure you know what you have.

I was looking at a bloom on one of my plumeria this early evening and all of a sudden my eye caught movement. Small praying mantis. They always blend so well, you do not see them until you are nose to nose with them.

Northeast, WA(Zone 5a)

They are so cool Sharon. Very interesting bugs. Animals? OR??

Anderson, IN(Zone 6a)

I had a praying mantis attack my shoe yesterday , I thought that was strange , Warmer areas get the Giant Mantis also , I use to live where they got 7 or 8 inches long ,
I have a hardy orange coming I am going to try ,

Sounds like you all Have been doing well with your plants ,

providing all goes well this month I have lots to get done ,and things will get done ,
I will be back later .

Northeast, WA(Zone 5a)

Wow, 7-8 inch preying mantis is amazing. I sent for 2 egg balls, can't think of what you call them, one year and put them in the refrigerator until it was time to get them going, and I forgot about them. A long time later when I found them, I decided it was too late and threw them away. Don't know if they ever hatched or what. So crazy. That is a good reason to have a garden calendar. For things to do and it would have reminded me to get them out and get them started.

Well, gotta finish the carpets today, ttyl, jen

Anderson, IN(Zone 6a)

Jen I don't remember either , Brown mantis egg pods usually reminds me of paper made with brown sugar ...

Some seedlings and cuttings

No photos today. Lost a neighborhood owl today and put another big hurt in my heart. It is now buried in my rose garden. But I looked at the front Sumac this afternoon. I think it is over 30 ft tall.

(Debra) Derby, KS(Zone 6a)

wow, I have missed a lot! you all are wonderful at Gardening, and Ju your seedlings look great. I know you pain, Sharon, at losing the owl, I'm sorry, too. nice coleus.

the triangle I planted all those seeds in for experiment.. gaura gone wild , ( from collected seed in the country) I was so happy to see all the honeybees.. giant yellow hyssop from seeds in the country.. I have some all over the patio now, the bees love it and so do the hummers.. a new color on a four o'clock, and in this snail planter,, does that look like a sycamore or a confederate rose?

I can't believe summer is almost over.. all this was from seeds and cuttings I saved from last year..

Thumbnail by joeswife
(Robin) Blissfield, MI(Zone 6a)

Debra, you've had a productive season, that's a Sycamore in pic #5. Interesting coloration on your four o' clock, looks new to me. Summers almost over and I don't have the ability to hibernate. Lets see, I might be able to cry me a river and sail south for greener pastures. Ak, I'll probably be able to survive this one (winter) as well.

Sorry for your loss Sharon, I too can feel your pain...

Northeast, WA(Zone 5a)

Debra, how is that pleurisy? Did the meds help? That is really painful.

Yes, the cold has come early But then the heat did too. Our hummers re gone. I'm sure they could not take all the smoke from these wildfires. It is really bad. They put up with all the hot weather so it must be the smoke. They were late getting here, and early leaving.

Almost all my tomatoes had BER this year. So far I have thrown them all away. Not sure what Bob's are doing. We have had a few off his plants.

Well, gotta look at the refrigerator and see if it needs cleaning while my cleaning lady is here. ttyl,

(Debra) Derby, KS(Zone 6a)

WHAT IS BER?

Anderson, IN(Zone 6a)

BER Abbreviation for ( Blossom end Rot ) ruins tomato setting ,,

Really nice looking Debra your flowers and plants ,, always so delightful from you !!!
is getting rather cold isn't it ,, to early too soon ,for that ,,.

OK JU, explain yourself. What are those funny looking flowers in the first picture? Looks like you cut out some paper flowers and glued to stems. And what are all the black lines on the second picture? Other than that they are very pretty. jen

Yeah Debra, what is Pleurisy? LOL, I know what it is, but do you still have it? And did the meds help?

Anderson, IN(Zone 6a)

First is the wrong photo of tithonia oops , Top right hand corner second photo and center left shows Monarch Butterfly , power lines Jen ,

beautiful, Ju..
Jen, the Pluerisy is still with me, but the meds they gave me took away the infection part that took me to bed, and most of the pain has left except the back side of my lungs. I am getting better, just tire out easier..
Here is a little baby Pandurata.. it will grow to this ( second pic) I started this seed from the first pod off this plant about two weeks ago, for a friend..

I am going to try a few seeds from you this Winter ,,

Am grinding paper and waiting for the Willow cuttings to root this afternoon ,, Probably be cold by the time it gets here ,, roots I mean
Forsythia cuttings Came out really good ,, The Cherry refused to summer root , Dormant cuttings I guess it is ,, try , try , again ,, lol

(Debra) Derby, KS(Zone 6a)

I STARTED A NANKING CHERRY LAST YEAR TO MAKE A SECOND PLANT SO I'D GET CHERRIES, BUT THE CUTTING WAS FROM THE SPRING, AND THIs year it didn't bloom, hoping it will next year, cuz I want cherries. Want a forsythia real bad, meant to get cuttings from the huge bush at my son's place, but forgot to.. is it too late? ( Sorry, I am at work on lunch and my caps lock stays on)
broke a small branch off an Empress Tree loaded with pods, it is in the water bubbler, hope it roots. Do you want some pods?
