Now Pretty Please, can you get Techs to solve the awful Journal problem that deletes what I have entered in the comment field when I try to edit an entry. The comment field goes blank (disappears), but still appears at top, however that will totally disappear if I don't copy and past it back in the comment field. I spent hours this morning fixing missing information about my spring orders. See below : Your Initial Comment: IS NOW BLANK I tried to take a screen shot, but couldn't get that to work of Journal entry. so I did a copy and past. Patti

I agree! I've had the same problem. I think Terry or Melody needs to start a separate discussion thread for Journal problems.

I've found that certain special characters cause the problem (like the circle R, "Registered" character in your entry. Try copy/paste your entry while editing, then remove the circle R everywhere it occurs. Save the entry then try editing it again to see if it fixed the problem. Granted this problem shouldn't occur, but that's how I've gotten around it.

Edit: Yes, it's that circled R character. I added the same plant to my journal and copy/pasted the PlantFiles info into an entry. I tried to edit the entry and the text disappeared:
http://davesgarden.com/community/journals/viewentry/383338/

My problem has shown up when I've done a copy/paste of info from PlantFiles (?!?) into a comment. For some reason, the "degree" character in the "Hardiness" field sometimes does, and sometimes doesn't, cause the same problem. I don't know how an entry can be created and viewed in PlantFiles, but doesn't work in a Journal entry.

I'll see if I can find an example of this and post a screenshot, but I've been trying to remove the special character when I make the initial entry because I knew it caused a problem.

mmmm, well...the www. isn't missing - we don't use it on the site. So if that is acting strangely, that is a different issue.

I'm not sure what you're saying... this is the problem DreamOfSpring found. Clicking the articles link from the home page- URL is:
http://www.davesgarden.com/guides/articles/whats-that-bug-popillia-japonica-the-japanese-beetle/

Going through the Guides & Info menu to get to the same article- URL is:
http://davesgarden.com/guides/articles/whats-that-bug-popillia-japonica-the-japanese-beetle

Then, when I clicked a "Recommended Articles" link at the end of the article I also got the http://www. link. Just now, when I tried to duplicate it, the "Recommended Articles" was gone and all I see is "Popular Gardening Topics" links at the end of the article. Very weird :-)

Charleston, SC(Zone 9a)

SallieKr,

If the 'www' is present in the URL (as seen at the top of your browser) when you are having a problem, you might try editing the url (at the top of your browser) manually to remove the 'www' and then press Enter to see if that may fix the problem temporarily, just as a workaround. While trying to characterize the article problem, I found that while viewing an article I can switch back and forth between "logged in" and "logged out" just by alternately adding and removing the 'www' from the URL.

Charleston, SC(Zone 9a)

Terry,

Although most DG pages no longer seem to use the 'www', a few still do, and at least in the case of the articles, the presence of the 'www' in the URL seems to be the main difference between when we are able to view articles correctly (i.e., w/o being logged out) and when we are not. When the Home page link is used to access an article, the resultant URL has the 'www' and the reader is logged out. I have found that the presence of the 'www' in the article URL also correlates with minor but noticeable differences in formatting of the menus and such in addition to the more serious problem of the user being logged out.

(Sallie) Cherry Vall, IL(Zone 5a)

As of this morning, I've noticed some changes. I'm no longer seeing the "www" prefix on the URLs, where I had before. Even if I try to manually add it (as DreamOfSpring mentioned in a comment above), I can't as the page reloads but still without the "www".

I am still, however, being logged out and seeing ads (I paused AdBlock for screenshots) when I click the "Today's Article" link from my home page- Photo 1. When I click "Guides & Information" from the menu, I'm back to being logged in- Photo 2. When I click the "Articles" link, without even selecting an individual article, I'm again logged out- Photo 3. This doesn't happen if I click any of the other links (PlantFiles, BugFiles, BirdFiles, etc.)

I mentioned before that the logged out problem was happening when I used Chrome browser, but not Internet Explorer. Today, the problem is identical using either browser.

Hmm. The good news is that we now seem to be getting very consistent behavior. The bad news is that it is consistently wrong.

I just tested both FF and Safari on my Mac (OsX 10.6). In both cases and regardless of whether I use the Home page link or the Guides & Information link, either way once I reach any article or even the articles page, I am logged out and see adds (except when running AdBlock as with FF).

And, yes, the 'www' is gone now; however, we do seem to have moved in the wrong direction. Since the Guides & Information link was working correctly before, I figured we would be moving both links in that direction. I'm sure there is a reason for going in this direction instead though.

I'm glad I'm not the only one seeing this... with different browsers and completely different OSs :-)))

Now that I have added ADBlocker, there are no more ads! But, when I go to view any articles, I am logged out. If I go to login, then I am back to my home page but not the article. Chrome browser on Win Vista (Yes, there is still such a thing!)

Clarksville, TN(Zone 7a)

Ads ... lots of ads. :(

(Barb) Manchester, NH(Zone 5a)

I still get them too either way I go to the articles. Logged out and ads!!!!!

Murfreesboro, TN(Zone 7a)

Sorry - I wasn't clear. Historically, we have NOT used http://www.davesgarden.com - just http://davesgarden.com so we need to get everything consistent again. Once we do, then the logout and ads should clear up.

Charleston, SC(Zone 9a)

Ok, I'm still a little groggy from an unplanned but much enjoyed afternoon nap, so I might be a bit confused, but it sure looks like the articles are working correctly now. With both FF & Safari and whether I access them via the Home page or Guides & Information, I am now able to access articles and remain logged in.

Could someone else give this a try and let us know if you are also staying logged in now when you visit the articles (and verify that I'm not still asleep and daydreaming).

Himrod, NY(Zone 6a)

I just stayed logged in using the Home page or Guides & Information using FF.

Milton, MA(Zone 6a)

I think it's working with Chrome!

Frisco, TX(Zone 8a)

Mine is working. No ads, stays logged in

(Sallie) Cherry Vall, IL(Zone 5a)

Yep! Working for me, too. Chrome browser, Win 8.1. I checked this AM and it was still broke, but all is normal now (except from the home page there's still no photo or title for the article). Kudos to the programming team. The major battle is won :-)))

Ripley, MS

Works great for me!

Clarksville, TN(Zone 7a)

Yep, the ads are all gone. I use Chrome.

(Barb) Manchester, NH(Zone 5a)

Working great for me too... Thanks to the team!!!!!

Milton, MA(Zone 6a)

Thanks, Terry et al

Sierra Foothills, CA(Zone 8a)

Great! It worked for me as well. Chrome, Win Vista I stayed logged in.

Somewhere in, MD(Zone 7b)

My ad preferences are "off", when I click on any article I am NOT "logged out", and I see no ads. Firefox user.

Thank you all! :)

Milton, MA(Zone 6a)

Now to get the thumbnails hooked up with the article links!

(Sallie) Cherry Vall, IL(Zone 5a)

And, hopefully, start a new thread for Journal problems. I've created a Word document with many bugs, inconsistencies and "wish-list" items. I'd be interested to see how many others are having the same problems, and also what progress is being made by the tech team.

Nantucket, MA(Zone 7a)

Still can't stay logged on when on Iphone as it use to be. Please advise as having davesgarden in the garden or at a nursery or botanical garden is very helpful. Patti

(Sallie) Cherry Vall, IL(Zone 5a)

Is it just me- or is the daily articles link once again missing from the home page? I first noticed this on Saturday, but nobody else has mentioned it.

I have been away and just now saw it. Thanks for bringing it up.....

(Sallie) Cherry Vall, IL(Zone 5a)

On a more positive note, I just got the weekly newsletter and "This Week's Articles" is there. It's been missing in other recent newsletters.

(Zone 5a)

SallyKr, I noticed the missing Today's article late last week I believe. It is still missing today.

Charleston, SC(Zone 9a)

Yes, the Today's Article info and link is missing from the Home Page again and has been for a few days. I didn't mention it until now, because it is my understanding that on this thread Terry only wants answers to the 2 questions she asked at the top of the thread: (1) whether we are logged out when viewing articles and (2) whether we see adds on article pages. My apologizes if I have misstated this; it's my understanding only, not a direct quote.

I don't think she wants this thread to become cluttered with all manner of issues, so I'm trying really, really hard to stay on topic (like I promised) - which is not at all easy for me. :-)
I believe admin still wants all other issues to go through the Contact Us link. Again, just my understanding of things. Correct me if wrong.

Patti, I will try it on my iPhone this afternoon, although I have not had problems with it as of late. Anyone else on an iPhone experiencing this?

Regarding the newsletter & home page issues with the articles - the techs are continuing to work on that and as soon as I have an ETA for a release that fixes those problems, I will let you know here. (Actually you'll probably hear me shout for joy from my home office :-).)

Sallie (and other journal users), please hang in there. We are working on some big adjustments to PlantFiles to make it more user-friendly AND more mobile-friendly. Once those changes are complete, I will be pleading the case for journal changes/corrections. I will open a thread here for you to start documenting the changes that need to be made, but I will ask everyone to keep your posts minimal so we don't have to sort through a lot of back-and-forth sidebar conversations to identify the corrections. And it's probably going to be a while before we get to this, due to the size of the other changes being made in the weeks and months ahead.

I figured the other issues were a priority, which is why I haven't been DMailing the journal problems. They can wait a few weeks/months :-)

Nantucket, MA(Zone 7a)

My iPhone issue seems fixed. I don't have to log on every time I use another app or read mail. Most pleased as being able access davesgarden while in the garden had become a favorite tool of mine. Thanks, Patti

(Sallie) Cherry Vall, IL(Zone 5a)

This morning I saw no change. Just now I checked and the Articles links are back, including the photos and titles! Also, viewing the articles doesn't log me out. Looks like it's fixed!

Clarksville, TN(Zone 7a)

Same here on seeing the Articles again. The "look" is different but not objectionable. I never was logged out. Seems there were a nunber different experiences.

(Barb) Manchester, NH(Zone 5a)

Here also. Good job techs!!!!!

Clarksville, TN(Zone 7a)

I agree.

(Sallie) Cherry Vall, IL(Zone 5a)

The only thing I noticed was that today, when I looked at the article about hardy perennials and posted a comment I saw the message "Hold on, this is waiting to be approved by Dave's Garden". I don't remember seeing that before except when I was being logged out when I clicked the articles link (the 2nd photo shows that I'm not logged out). I reloaded the page a few times and after about 8 minutes, my response had completely disappeared. When I click the conversation "bubble" icon, I get a Disqus pop-up showing my recent activity, but the new comment isn't there. I haven't set up a Disqus account, but I read (either here or in another thread) that it wasn't necessary.

Interesting... I had more information to add to the above, so I sent a bug report Dmail. I had no option to attach even one screenshot to the Dmail, however.

Now, about an hour later, I decided to check again. When I go through the home page link, I find the article with many comments, but mine is still missing. I decided to go to Guides & Information-->Articles-->The Hardiest of Hardy Perennials. The article url is the same (except missing the end slash) but apparently links to something different because there are no comments (Photo 5)
