Who's looking forward to spring?

Lucketts, VA(Zone 7a)

How could you walk away indeed, Holly!! Sort of like rescuing a show dog from its life in the ring. Your plant was waiting for retirement in the right home. What a beauty.

Salem Cnty, NJ(Zone 7b)

Right place, right time. You always get some great plants. It is a pretty one.
Today was downright balmy!!! Just a vest on outside.

Lucketts, VA(Zone 7a)

Weren't your legs cold?

Dover, PA(Zone 6b)

ROFLOL
JAN< REALLY!!!

Lucketts, VA(Zone 7a)

And what did the neighbors think??? har har har

Lititz, PA(Zone 6b)

LOL what a riot!!!

Vienna, VA(Zone 7a)

Good one, greenthumb!

A few weeks ago, I discovered that my snow boots weren't waterproof. Local stores don't have much of a selection because they're moving in spring things, so I ordered some. They came today. I really hope I won't need them until next year because, like Ric, I'm snow depressed!

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

Heck, Holly, for ten bucks, you COULD treat it as disposable, like a bouquet of cut flowers- not that I imagine you would.

HAHA David!!

Scott County, KY(Zone 5b)

Who's (who'd) looking forward to spring? Let's play two!

Giving Jan a run for her money...

ha, what a cute snowman

Salem Cnty, NJ(Zone 7b)

Hehehehe. You guys know what I meant. I think.
I did see a runner in shorts.
Nice snowman.

Lititz, PA(Zone 6b)

I see people in shorts all the time and every time I think about how insane they must be.

Salem Cnty, NJ(Zone 7b)

Thomas and I were outside for awhile this morning. We both had boots on and got very soggy. Thomas especially because he was splashing in the puddles. His daddy had to bring another change of clothes, cuz he was soaked. He had fun kicking a kickball around and going on the garden path. Trying to teach him to stay on the path and not cut through.
I started cutting back butterfly bush and some spirea. Hard to do with a helper. We picked up sticks and added them to the kindling pile.
Leaves of the bulbous thingys are poking up and out. Looking forward to seeing them in bloom.

After his nap and some snuggling we are snacking on popcorn and watching some Thomas the train stories that are narrated by Ringo Starr.

Silver Spring, MD(Zone 7a)

Jan, sounds like a fun morning! :)

I have so much pruning to do but I haven't ventured out there because the ground is still soaked. I'm hoping to get at least some of the pruning done on Friday.

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

Just went out to get something from my shed. It is amazing how much
water has been absorbed already from the back lawn!
No more squishing as i walked--no more mud...still a bit of ice on my shed landing..

I guess i can thank my 2 Maples for that...I bet they happily sopped it all up.
Now I can see my bulbs starting to grow! Got a couple mini-crocus too.

Gotta hurry up and get my Butterfly Bush pruned back. It has had new leaves
on it since fall--and they are still there!!!

So much spring activity at my HD! You can feel SPRING oozing out of
everyone's pores...a REALLY, REALLY good feeling!!! A new liveliness going on..

ME? Worked all day--walked around non-stop. I really hurt!
I am sitting here soaking my aching feet in Epsom salts....They had a bit too many
miles on them today. Need to wear a pedometer--to see just how many.

I need to find a pair of shoes that:

--have a closed toe and heel (company policy).
--are wide enough to hold my foot steady, but room for my tootsies to wiggle.
--Are waterproof to some extent--so I can wear them outside when watering
all the plants and not to have to worry about soggy socks.
--are not the boot type--just a comfy all purpose outdoor shoe with cushioned insides..

I have so many shoes--but since i am always struggling with my painful balls of my feet.
I have been dealing with some form of Fachitis (sp?) for too long. Maybe 5-6 years...
Need to go see my podiatrist--maybe he can work some miracles.

I wear some kind of cushioning insoles in all my shoes. Not too many are made to
cushion the ball of the foot area. Mostly--it is the heel (for heel spurs)...
which I lived through in 1991-1992. For a whole year--I had to wear custom orthotics.
in all my shoes. Went all summer with NEVER wearing sandals. ..:o(

--I am not a person who likes to wear shoes w/o socks. Matter of fact-I wear
TWO pr. of socks--all the time. If you are on your feet a lot--and do not wear 2 pair of socks
--you do not know the comfort you are missing!!! ALWAYS wear 2 pair of socks!!!
The inner pair can be just s "footie" sock--but it still works.
Most people in sports already know that--or people that are on their feet all day.

HOW DOES IT WORK--YOU ASK?

There is always friction going on-between your foot and the sock--and the shoe.
That is where blisters come from!
Wearing 2 pr. of socks allows the friction to be between the socks--and
NOT your foot and the shoe. You can buy these thin, "liner" bootie socks--
the ones that just cover your foot--not any higher than your ankle.
Then--a decent pair of athletic socks over those.

TRY IT! You will never go back to one pair of socks again.
Gita

Silver Spring, MD(Zone 7a)

Gita, I find Merrells to be the most comfortable shoes for me. When wearing Merrells, the balls of my feet never hurt, even after being on my feet all day long. Other brands that are supposed to be comfortable only last a few hours before they start bothering me.

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

S--are "merrells" shoes on line? Do they have a catalog?

I will Google "Merrells" and see what I get. Never heard of this brand!
Of course--everyone's feet are different...

Thanks, Gita

Silver Spring, MD(Zone 7a)

Gita, my mom has really painful bunions and the only shoes that she can tolerate are Merrells!

Here's the webpage for women's best sellers. http://www.merrell.com/US/en/womens-best-sellers/#start=0&sz=12&srule=top-sellers

I know they're a bit pricey, but I feel like shoes are totally worth the investment! Those Jungle Mocs are particularly comfortable.

A lot of doctors, nurses, photographers, and others who are on their feet all day wear Merrells.

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

SS--Thanks--but I did not see anything that I could use working in a wet
garden environment...that would "breathe" and stay dry.
I may consider some of these for next winter.

I will check out some of the other suppliers.

Thanks. Gita

Silver Spring, MD(Zone 7a)

Gita, the Jungle Moc stays dry and breathes really well. But it's not considered waterproof.

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

I just ordered from Shoebuy.com and got good service. Might have other styles. They have Merrell and many others.

Dover, PA(Zone 6b)

Those Merrells look like what my orthopedic surgeon wears. The Encore Gust look very much like my Josef Seibel clogs that I found at a thrift shop, just love, and pass off as a dress shoe. LOL The Jungle Moc looks like it may be a very good gardening shoe, provided you have a decent step added to any shovel or fork you might use.

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

Thanks--both of you.....

I just looked at both sites. Checked out many of the styles.

Merrell---
"Jungle Mocs" and the ""Dassie Slide" seem OK--
BUT--these shoes do not look like they would be easy slide on or off.
A bit too clunky as well--

Shoebuy--
I liked the Klogs "Naples" style.
Their sizing help was nice--as they noted that these Klogs run a size larger than normal.
I wear a size 310 shoe--so they suggested size 9W for me. Crazy colors!

The "Jollys slip on Clog" @ $59.95 seemed the best price. A real gardening shoe..
Wide toe area (yeah!)etc...

If you know any other good sites for shoes, please list them here...

I already have a "Sloggers" shoe I bought for watering several years ago.
My main concern is the comfort inside the shoe--as I have all these foot problems.
All day running around HD--my feet hurt so bad I do not want to take another step.

Buying on-line is iffy--as I do not get to try the shoes on. Aina has passed on
about 3 pairs of shoes to me that she bought on line and did not like the way hey fit.

I may have to go sleuthing....We have DSW here----a huge shoe store at the Mall here--
a bunch of sporting goods stores...etc.
What type of a shoe store would carry these kind of shoes?

Thanks all--Gita

Here are my "Sloggers". I bought these on-line about 6 years ago.
They are, totally, molded plastic. I have to switch shoes on and off when I water--
kind of annoying...But--I can walk through puddles with these and stay dry.
I can only wear these with one pair of socks. My tennis shoes--I need 2 pair of socks.
So--I have to switch socks AND shoes...I just deal with it...

I suppose in the "Perfect Life"--I would have a pair of shoes that do both--and I
could wear them all day.

Sally, I liked your article about Primroses and Pansies. I used to buy Pansies every spring for the mailbox bed. I can't remember why I stopped; maybe deer started eating them.

I have had Primroses in my backyard for years and really enjoy them. They bloom off and on throughout the summer.

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

I LOVE Primroses---may need to buy some....BUT--the ones for sale
have been forced into bloom--and when that bloom goes--they have a
hard time re-blooming. Not to even think about coming back next year!

Those of you that got starts to my Heirloom Primroses last year---
please let me know if--and how they bloomed for you. OK?

There is one more clump I meant to dig and divide--but I am keeping these.

G.

Salem Cnty, NJ(Zone 7b)

I always like the happy little faces in pansies.

Vienna, VA(Zone 7a)

I've had much better luck than that with Primroses, Gita. Mine always re-bloom after I dead-head them, and they've survived 4-5 winters in my backyard. Not only that, but they've formed clumps that I've been able to divide.

Lititz, PA(Zone 6b)

I LOVE Merrells! I bought a pair specifically for yard work and they are top notch. My yard ones are waterproof and that really comes in hand walking around in dewy grass or snow blowing. I also have an old pair I used to wear for work, a pair I currently wear for work, and a casual pair for anytime use. They are pretty great and very comfortable that's for sure.

Lucketts, VA(Zone 7a)

Primrose is a rather wide open term. Even in the genus Primula there are hundreds of species and cultivars. Unless more specific identities are given, Gita and Muddy may be comparing apples to rutabagas.

Vienna, VA(Zone 7a)

I think they're Primula vulgaris. They're the inexpensive ones sold at most garden centers.

Dover, PA(Zone 6b)

Our local Super Shoe had a pretty good selection of the Merrells. Most were equal to or $10 less than Shoebuy.com or Amazon. Last Sunday they had a 20% off coupon in the paper and I got a pair of the jungle mocs for about $71. So far I really like them and they are said to waterproof.

Lititz, PA(Zone 6b)

Nice! I'll have to check out that Shoebuy website. I've been thinking I might try a pair of Keen's sometime. They are Merrell's competitor.

Lititz, PA(Zone 6b)

I was at the Home Depot today and saw they had raspberry plants for sale. There was some weird round substance on the stems though. I thought it looked like dew but they when I squished one in my hand so I thought it might be an insect egg. What do you guys think?

Lititz, PA(Zone 6b)

Oops I forgot the pic

Thumbnail by Sequoiadendron4
Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

wow, a lot of them. I don't know but would not rule out insect eggs.

Lititz, PA(Zone 6b)

Yeah I was hoping they weren't eggs because these things were all over most of the plants they had.

Lucketts, VA(Zone 7a)

Post your photo on the Insect ID Forum.

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

as they are clustered near that node, makes me more suspicious.

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

I am sure it is not an insect--or their eggs....

I noticed them too--but then realized that inside the tightly wrapped
packaging there must be moisture crystals, and as the stems are now growing
( they are now inside a warm GH), the moisture crystals are clinging to the emerging
stems as they grow. That is all.

That seems reasonable to me. They CANNOT be insects or eggs.--Just look!
They are clear as glass...THINK! DO NOT assume the worst and panic!
I bet if you buy one of these packaged Raspberries, and cut open the package,
you will see them mixed into the potting mix...whatever it is made up of.

Relaxxxxx....G.

Lititz, PA(Zone 6b)

Oh I am relaxed G. I don't actually care if they are or aren't eggs as I wasn't planning on buying any of them. All I know is that when I smushed one in my fingers it wasn't watery but more greasy like an insect egg.
