Amen to that G!

Well, despite the fact we are forecast for another 1-3 inches today, this is March 1st, the first day of meteorological spring. I am SOOO ready this year. In keeping with the thread's theme I wrote a quick set of lines for today.

March 1st has come at last
And Feb-brrr-ary's finally past.
Each month starts with hopes anew
Of what the nature gods will do
"Have mercy on our frozen feet,
And spare us now of snow and sleet.
Enough of Currier & Ives,
Of snowy scenes with leaden skies!
Bring the flush of new growth on,
Accompanied by the robin's song,
Balmy days with clear, bright sun,
Assure us, please, that winters done!

David---

Where have you been hiding your poetic talents all this time?????
That is so nice!!

Have to leave for work--and brace myself for the travel back home
around 6PM....

Everyone--stay safe! Gita

It is snowing here again.....

Dover, PA(Zone 6b)

&%#$, not sure I'm going to clear this snow, ice is to follow. Most times it's easier to clear if the ice is on snow, unless it penetrates and the whole mess is ice. :-{

Vienna, VA(Zone 7a)

greenthumb, you do have quite a knack for poetry!

We just have a dusting of snow so far, and I'm hoping it doesn't start again.

Ric, you were very smart to shovel paths to your feeders. I cleared some of my paths, but not enough. The stairs I carved into the hillside as well as the path leading to it are so coated in ice that I've decided it's stupid to use them.

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

Wow, the one from Brooks is fabulous, and so is greenthumb's!
I really like both!

Dover, PA(Zone 6b)

We have a whole maze of walkways that Ric has cleared. They go around the house, to all the bird feeders, down to the GH and barn, around the garage, utility area and out the front walk and parking.

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

What a sloppy day! We're having to watch the drainage at the back of the house. Darn flat lot, too easy for water to get stuck by the house. When Mark and I were outside in this weather looking at the drains, I said, I'd rather sit in the basement and catch it with towels!

Lucketts, VA(Zone 7a)

Glad you're safe at home, Sally. Things are slippery here and the local libraries opened at 1 p.m. and closed because of the weather at 2 p.m. Hope Gita has an easy trip home.

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

Not easy--just VERY careful.....My car was totally covered in ice when I left work.
Everything looked crystalized--like no-see-through-glass.
Glad I put on the nylon windshield cover. THAT IS A GOOD THING TO HAVE---
I bet any Auto supply place would have these--unless they are pase. (old)..

Something like this----there are many variations available.

http://www.amazon.com/Delk-Products-Inc-202486-01-Motor/dp/B00GA5977Q/ref=sr_1_15?ie=UTF8&qid=1425251700&sr=8-15&keywords=windshield+frost+cover

You cover the entire windshield--tuck the sides in and close the doors to
hold it tight. The windshield wipers hold the bottom down.
When you are ready to drive--just open the doors and take loose the tucked in sides,
lift the wipers up--and RIP the whole thing off. Spectacular! Ice pieces went flying all over...
I had to open the back hatch door which was coated with solid ice.
The glass was like bumpy shower door glass. When I slammed it back shut--ALL the
ice sloughed off in one big piece. AHA!

Driving was not so bad--as all the roads were just wet--but also slushy with ice.

Anyway--home safe. I do not have to go anywhere tomorrow.....nice............;o)

Should I write a ditty about this? OK, if you insist.

Tah--Dahhh!

Too much ice
Not nice!
Too much rain
What a pain!
Socks all wet
That's what I get
Waking to my car--
glad it wasn't far.

Now back in my house
Cozy as a mouse...
PHEW!!!!
It wasn't fun to do.

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

gave me a chuckle, Gita!

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

OK, Sally---
You need to contribute something too---I KNOW you can do it!

Just pick a favorite (or least favorite) place in your garden and
write one about that. Or your dog---or cat---or weeds--or cooking dinner.

I'll be waiting---YOU--who writes amazing articles for DG--can, surely,
cough up a limerick or two!

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

uh oh you said limerick...one of my faves..we'll see what I come up with, probably while trying to sleep tonight

Vienna, VA(Zone 7a)

Nice rhyme, Gita!
Sally, I hope your house stays dry! Is there any way to create a swale to carry the water away, or to improve the grade? When we put in our pond, I had to do something with the 100+ cubic feet of dirt we dug up, so I used it to improve the grade. I started piling the chunks with the most clay at the foundation, dumped wheelbarrow loads of dirt and then smoothed it out to create a 5' wide slope with whatever percentage drop it's supposed to have.

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

Muddy, the drains that are supposed to take the water are frozen up, we didn't lay them deep enough under the grass. Not a lot of room there for swaling. A big project involving drainage and a new driveway would be really nice. So last week we laid temporary drains across the surface, of 1 1/2" inch black plastic tubing we had in the shed. Now those froze, we must have had just enough dips and enough slow freezing drippings to fill them. The ground surface is frozen now so we should be alright with letting the temp drains thaw in the basement, and reinstalling them tomorrow, and better vigilance. We just need those two smaller roof areas to drain over to the driveway and not right in the corner by the house. Yeah, we could go buy several lengths of 3 or 4 inch drain tube...

None of which makes good limerick content!

Lucketts, VA(Zone 7a)

Sally was wracking her brain
How to make her side yard drain
Digging a ditch
Would be really a b****
And drive her and Mark insane

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

hahahahahahaha

Vienna, VA(Zone 7a)

You're on a roll, greenthumb!

Finger's crossed that your house stays dry, Sally.

How'd you get the title of the thread corrected? Don't think I've ever seen that happen...

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

WAIT WHAT?!?!? WOW

Not anything I did, or any special connections that I know of.
Maybe DG didn't want us to look like idiots.

Scott County, KY(Zone 5b)

Takes a lot of the fun out of it, though....

Lititz, PA(Zone 6b)

Lol..good lookin out DG

Lititz, PA(Zone 6b)

Not to change the subject but has anyone ever seen the Matrix? Darcy and I were watching Matrix Reloaded last weekend and I think Muddy looks like Trinity. Anyone see the resemblance?

Just to be safe, don't start any wars with her.

Lititz, PA(Zone 6b)

Lol...yeah for sure, she'd kick my butt!

Lucketts, VA(Zone 7a)

Yes, I see the resemblance. I always though Muddy looks very similar to my college room mate, but her resemblance to Trinity is even stronger lol.

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

haha, yup! her secret is out!

Vienna, VA(Zone 7a)

OMG, I love you all : - ) !!!!
I am 56, so being compared to that young thing is soooo flattering.
