Who's looking forward to spring?

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

Gita, I am so GLAD I know you well, so I know you aren't YELLING at me.
I don't panic at bugs either but I thought bug eggs was a reasonable suspicion. Your idea about moisture crystals sounds very plausible.

annapolis, MD(Zone 7b)

Maybe it is berry sweat er sap!

Think you hit the nail in the head, coleup.

Lititz, PA(Zone 6b)

That might be the correct answer Coleup! My Home Depot has such poor quality plants and obviously puts very little resources into their gardening dept. that I was sure they bought crapped up plants. Now my thoughts were incorrect. Interesting stuff. See, one never learns unless you ask. Thanks!

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

I took a close look at all the raspberry plants today.

There was just one that had a bunch of those droplets on it.
I went all up and down the stem with my pinched fingers and it seemed
slightly sticky --but also as I would imagine wet moisture crystals would feel.

Checked the stems of others--and some of them seemed questionable
for Aphids. Did the same thing--pinched the stem between my fingers
and rubbed it up and down the stem. Hmmm--there could have been some Aphids???
Not sure...
IF it was some kind of Sweet sap--I imagine Aphids would find it.

inconclusive.....

Coleup, you get an A++++ for research skills!

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

OK! Tomorrow--I will rub some of those "beads" off and taste it.
if it is sweet--coleup--you are right. If it is yukky--I will puke.

Welcome to "spring".

Yup, we have it, coming down fast and wet, but I think you have more. Enjoy!
; ^D

Of course, I am off today, and working tomorrow when it should get to low 50s. Boo!

Vienna, VA(Zone 7a)

I was so surprised to see snow this morning. It's the first day of Spring, not April Fool's Day for crying out loud!

Vienna, VA(Zone 7a)

Something's wrong with my iPhone. The photo I took of crocuses yesterday was crystal clear, but today the photos have a lot of grainy white areas. Maybe the lens is fogged up ; - )

First Day of Spring, move over snowmen.
What is all this white stuff?
Think we'll just hang on the porch and party.

LOL @Muddy!

This is branch breaking, tree toppling snow for sure! So wet and now soaking with rain.

Salem Cnty, NJ(Zone 7b)

Hehehe, foggy lens!!! Good one!

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

Holly---You into Penguins??? Even pink ones???

I have not set foot outside--except to get my mail.

Working very hard to get my rooms back to normal after the windows
were put in (yesterday). Of course--one cannot just put everything back as it was--
need to vacuum and clean under the beds, wipe clean the blinds that
were taken down--you know....it just goes on and on....

I am exhausted! Been at it since late morning..and now it is 3:30PM.
Almost done with ONE bedroom!
Sitting here--chugging on a glass of White Zinfandel and pigging out on
Richardson Farms Dry Roasted Peas....LOVE those!!! I am addicted!!!
My go-to snack. The Amish Markets sell these too...
Who wants to look up all the nutritional stuff on these?

OK--I know it is snowing--gotta find something to do!
These "Guys" here decided to play some cards on the patio--why not?

The Flamingos and the Snowman...that could be the title of a children's book! Those flamingos made a good call.

Gita, cute snowman photo. Someone must have had a fun time making that scene!

This thread's a bit long, bit since spring HAS arrived (ROFL) I think it will die a natural death.

Vienna, VA(Zone 7a)

Mostly sunny, high near 60 degrees tomorrow!!

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

Oh goody! I can hear all about it when people come up to the INFO desk...ROFL.
I will QUITE enjoy a good day off in good weather, when it arrives.

Sally---

Could I give you a plant that would adorn your Library tables?
You know I have lots and lots....
I have a lot of stuff I have collected also...Please tell me something you could use
in the Library at your children's "clinics"...

What would you like to have that you don't have?
I have a lot of craft books--some aimed at young kids. Supplies...
I have bags of plastic Easter eggs. Could you use some of them?
I bought them on sale over the last few seasons thinking we would be doing another
Easter egg Clinic. Well-it never materialized.

PLEASE!!! Any time you say to yourself...."I wish I had this or that"...
contact me first. I will gladly give you anything you want...IF I HAVE IT.

Gita

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

I'll keep it in mind, Gita, I know you have a very generous spirit!
I have to rein in my plant enthusiasm at the library. I cannot let them get ratty, they have to be bulletproof plants. And I can't go crazy with quantity, not everyone likes the jungle look. Thankful for the mild temps tomorrow, to bring home the Amaryllis languishing with a floppy leaf in the back room.

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

I have lots and lots of smal lpots of Spider Plants....
Could you weave that into some kind of story about spiders?

"Little Miss Muffet
Sat on her tuffet
Eating her curds and whey.....etc....

Do any kids nowadays even know what a tuffet is? What "curds" and "whey" are?
Do you? I can help you there--as I have eaten them all in my childhood.

If fresh milk is left to go sour and continue separating--you will have these.

--The fat will rise to the top--this can be churned into butter. (heavy whipping cream)
--The milk solids will curdle (from which cottage cheese can be made. Then--cheese.
It can also be eaten as is. In Europe we used to call it "Yogurt".
--The liquids will stay at the bottom--this is the "whey'...

Have you ever thought of having kids make their own butter?

All they need to do is pour some heavy whipping Cream into a jar and kick it/roll it
around for a given time. (a substitute for churning).
Then enjoy the butter on some bread or crackers.

Just one aspect of early agriculture no one still uses...or knows about.

Your creative mind chugging away~~~!

These are young preschoolers and we have one half hour to talk, including time for books, songs, fingerplays etc. It goes pretty fast. I might be able to demonstrate but cannot fund supplies or have the time to actually have them all make a jar. Hey, one jar that they all take a turn with... it just might work.....

I kill spider plants.

Here's some figures for you on those peas http://www.livestrong.com/article/314500-the-calories-in-dried-green-peas/

Just came in from the garden. I've been weeding since 7:30. I've got these little rosetty things that look kinda like baby arugula or dandilions which they are of neither. Could they be miner's lettuce? Anyway they are starting to bloom with these tiny white flowers so I know I have to get them out now or its going to be a nightmare. They're in every bed I have except for the moras and that's filled with moss. So my goal is to get it all out before Passover actually by tonight. Some of them are growing up between the daffodil leaves and I have daffodils all over the yard. Yeah they're making a mess. I hope I'll have time to cut down all the stuff left from last year. Things like valerian, artichokes, hollyhocks etc are already starting to come up and I haven't gotten last year's growth cut back thanks to the rain and the snow. Oh and I have a dozen hellebores and three camellias to get in before they expire on the deck. Feels so good to be back outside doesn't it?!

silver spring, MD(Zone 7a)

I just checked the weather. Can you believe we finally get a 70 degree day and its going to rain!
There is absolutely no justice! None!

Silver Spring, MD(Zone 7a)

Yehudith, you might have hairy bittercress.

Their seedpods explode and send the seeds flying. I didn't know what they were until greenthumb came to visit and weeded them for me. :)

silver spring, MD(Zone 7a)

Gardener

You nailed it!!! I just checked it on gardener's world. Yep I gotta get 'em out now, they're all over the place.

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

Yehudith---
Thanks for the information on the dried green peas.
However--these are NOT the kind you cook soup from--these are made for
snacking. The roasted peas are dry-roasted, have a hint of an oil coating
and a trace of very fine grains of salt on them.
They come in an 8oz packet for $2.29 at Richardson Farms.
They are brittle and easy to chomp on. NOT hard at all. I am addicted to these....
and it is my go to snack to squelch hunger.
I guess I snack bout 1/3 of a cup when munching--one pea at a time!
Makes the pleasure last longer---:o)

One serving is 1oz.

NOT as innocent as just reg. dried peas.
Geez! I could NEVER chew on those without breaking my teeth.
