It's snowing.....need I say more?
weather in the garden # 138
Thanks, Northeasterners! We are finally getting a taste of your weather - the dregs - and seeing what real snow is all about with greater than a foot here at the Valley, and approaching two feet in west KY.
Some of it is rather pretty, but we're all pretty tired of winter about now. Glad I can stay home and just watch birds out the window.
31° the temperature is falling here, but it looks like we will miss the snow this round as we are NE of Boston & storm track is south of us. Boston needs almost 2" to break the record for the most snow during the winter & I am not sorry to miss that one. DH has sanded the driveway again so we don't slide on frozen ice like snow.
I bet Kentucky natives have little experience with driving in snow. Good idea to stay home and enjoy the view.
Oh, they have experience all right - they just don't ever learn.
This level of inundation occurs about once a generation - so that lesson is new to many. Skating around on a trace happens all the time, and it's like they slept through that class - again.
Ah, memories are short.
It's 12 degrees here this morning but sunny
Sunny here as well.....the driveway is a skating rink....am hoping the sun will begin to melt it even though it's single digits out there....Sorry you got a taste of the nasty weather, VV...at least it's March!
Ended up with about 8" here. Another snow day. At least the grandies are back at their house. Mom and dad flew home from Boston about 6:45 last evening. They had a LONG day waiting at the airport. They would have driven home, but apparently everyone else had that idea because there were NO cars available for them.
It was cute to see the kids' reactions when they walked in the door. I guess I was tired, I slept til 8:30 this morning. Hehehe. We had turned off the alarms.
I need to get out there and clear off the back deck. Jeff did everything else yesterday and is now continuing demo in the bedroom. Ceiling drywall is coming down now. I do appreciate he isn't just sledgehammering things, but taking time to keep the pieces as big as possible. Easier to put in the little trailer we borrowed in order to take to the dump.
Listening to two men in the airplane row in front of us talking about the snow in Boston this year. One is younger, like maybe 20s. Older guy is not MUCH older, not even middle aged, but still not obviously young.
Young : this snow is almost as bad as winter of 1976!
Old: you mean 1978?
Young: oh yeah, that.
Neither of these guys were BORN in 1978! Let us old folks enjoy boasting....don't take away our Blizzard of '78.
'78 was a single blizzard with almost no warning, instead of our series of 3 or 4 this year. We did have warning so no one starved. ☺
I understand the confusion. There was a blistering snowstorm in 1966 too, with three feet high snow in the midwest and no power to huge areas for over a week. This one is totally different because the risks to roof and inside of houses is much worse.
Temp got above freezing today during the day. Still a lot of cold over the weekend. By early next week we are predicted to have weather in the 40s and 50s. Watch those dirty piles of snow wash away!
Then there was the Blizzard of "88......that was in March! Terrible loss of life.....I always wondered how they got all that snow in March.....now I know!
By that measure, we've been very lucky. Snow is showing pockmarks as it melts. I bought a new compact camera, so perhaps some pics soon.
It is funny to see my dog putting his nose toward mine while he stands on the ice piles outside our kitchen window.
35° & overcast Slight period of 'snain' this morning, but not of long duration.
Its 46 degrees and sunny , what a beautiful day.Time to fire up the barbecue.Lol
On top of the snow?
42° bright sun. hoping that e will get more melting today.
was away all last week on vacation and when we got back it looks like about 12" of snow had melted - and much more will go this week - birds are starting to chirp like it is spring!
Just starting to do a good melt here & we are just a bit SE of you. One large icicle still left, but it is a shadow of its former self.
It was 54 degrees today ,enjoyed going out to lunch with one of my garden club buddies.
It was close to 50 here, & my favorite place to walk....behind the Black Rock Dam.....had melted down to bare road.....it was wet, but wonderful to walk again! Should be in the 40s for several days, but.....not enough snow is melting off the porch roof, & I'm afraid of the rain forecast for today!
If you have ice melting cyrstals ,put them in old panty house & toss it on the porch roof. it will help melt the snow.
I have no old panty hose................
Try new panty hose. They don't cost much. ☺
see if Cindy has any old ones
I do have old panty hose & lots of rock salt! Will do it today, since there's still a heap of snow there....we should lose a lot to melting as it will be 50 & sunny....yippee! Starting my tomato & pepper seeds today.
Was 56° to day.
Supposed to have a high of 35° tomorrow. Saw the first chipmunk of the season running across the snow.
Only problem with rock salt and panty hose is if it discolors the outside of the house or if it gets inside through leaks. Supposedly the non-calciferous kind of rock salt is what's needed for the panty hose trick. We have a delicate stain on our house , so are not trying it.
There's a constant drip drip drip sound outdoors. Also watch for falling ice dams! We are purposely not going out of our garage bacause of the high roof there.
The biggest icicle around our downspout is a shadow of i8ts former self. Snow & ice did a good melt today, so it will rest tomorrow with the temperature going to be 20° colder.
Same here.
Yes, the melt was awesome here.....most of my roof snow is gone, but some remains on that pesky back porch! After a 58 degree day yesterday, we are back to 40 today.....the drive was a sheet of ice this morning....sigh....
Cold night, thawing to low 40s today, rain & freezing rain moving in tonight......
Cold rain, but not freezing....YAY!
32° & rain just starting--snow tomorrow? Hope not!
36 here and there is a light rain right now
Rained all night and most of today. Soggy, soggy mess!
Misty rain, but a constant one. 37°
Snow!!!
about 2" here. Hope that it melts tomorrow.
No rain, no snow....until tomorrow that is! Today is partly sunny & 50.....good news....
