FIRST FLOWERS OF SUMMER!! Early July Edition :)

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

Sally---
Our little tiff about the fence lasted about a week. I saw that she was upset--
that i was upset--and I extended the peace offering. All has been well since.

I always tell her how pretty she looks without any scarves on her head.
After all--it is her own yard. She did not even know i took that picture...
I did show her....she seldom smiles....gotcha!
They always have to wear the long pants and rips and a head-scarf...
it is their religion--I suppose.

Jeff--I know you asked that in jest...I will crop that bike out as best i can...
The bike belongs to her son--he was going to use it b/c his car is not usable.
It has been sitting on the curb for over a month. Bad bearings on the front wheels....
BUT--the bike also has some kind of problems...so it just sits there.
They buy so many things--so often...I guess they all have $$$ to burn.

Cat-thanks--color is in the eye of the beholder...to me--all colors look good
together when it comes to flowers. OK! I DO try to coordinate a bit...

Comcast man comes tomorrow to see whassup with my TV. Hard living w/o it....
Probably something simple and stupid...as I am technologically challenged...
I called Comcast support--and he could not figure anything out.

Yes! Sally.......to kill time--I have been picking seeds.......Not too many yet--but some.

Stripped dried seeds off a Viburnum bush at HD while watering it. Lots and lots of dried up berries.
Tag said: "Brandywine witherod Viburnum." Vibrant fall colors and berries.
Zone 5-9.-- Grows 5'-6' tall and 6' wide. Deer resistant.

ANYONE??? I HAVE LOTS of SEEDS!!!! Teee...heee....Gita

I would try some Viburnum seeds. But remember, you may have to have two specimens of Viburnum to get good frui

I had good intentions of getting and sharing pics today.... didn't happen, sorry! Dayliies, Hydrangea Strawberries n Cream, verbena, coreopsis. I am enjoyin my caladiums! They;re several ots worth, lined up in the shade of the Magnolia along the sidewalk. I have to look up what I got, one was Gingerland and it is gorgeous.

Isn't that Agastache 'Upsy Daisy"?
;^D

Very pretty, Dear Wife must like having such a flower filled yard.

My pink rose of Sharon is starting, I'll try extra hard to get you a picture

Silver Spring, MD(Zone 7a)

thanks, Seq! I love your coreopsis--what a pretty color! I like your bee photos--they can be hard to get photos of the way they move around and disappear inside blossom! :-)

Agastache 'Upsy Daisy'--LOL!

Silver Spring, MD(Zone 7a)

I'm loving all of these coreopsis pictures. My Zagreb needs a haircut at this point.

1 and 2 Speaking of Lupines, I have one that's blooming now, which is just weird! The others have pretty ugly foliage, like this one.

3 Phlox David that I got as a bare riot from ADR last year. Such pretty blooms and no powdery mildew!

4 Very fragrant lily.

5 Creeping thyme. All of my ornamental thyme died last year when I had that issue with rot, but it's shown up in a different spot!

Nice, SSG! That's wonderful you were able to get your lupine to grow and bloom for you! The thyme looks great.

Silver Spring, MD(Zone 7a)

Seq, that's the coolest chrysanthemum ever. What a cool looking flower.

Does anyone grow a spider-style daylily? I'm getting a bit tired of my small yellow daylilies and looking for a change.

Thanks, Catmint! I should have added that the rest of my lupines bloomed back in April or May, so it was a surprise to see this one. I don't know what it's doing blooming in the middle of the summer!

your lilies look so beautiful and healthy... many of ours dried up at the tips due to lack of water... we have some nice blooms, but nothing as gorgeous as yours. nice to have some by the pool ^_^

Silver Spring, MD(Zone 7a)

yes, your lilies are gorgeous, Holly!

SSG where do you have your lupine planted? what kind of sun/soil do they get?

Dover, PA(Zone 6b)

We have a great well and do alot of watering.

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

Jeff--

It is VERY likely that the very dried up berry clusters on the Viburnum
are from last year.
These Viburnums we have are huge--5' or more tall. NOT little new plants..

Sally--just give me the word--and Thou shalt have any seeds Thou heart desires....:o)

We (HD) also have large, beautiful ROS "Lavender Chiffon"...
I have lots and lots of seeds for this one too. Went to Lowes a couple years ago
and picked a bag-full of theirs off. These were already on clearance.
It is one of the most beautiful, double-bloom ones.

My lupines are in full sun. I planted them a few years ago when I didn't know that they preferred partial shade in our climate.

Silver Spring, MD(Zone 7a)

well, it seems to have worked!! what about soil?

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

OH....Sally and Paul--

Just FYI---the small begonia I gave you--and, Paul, you said,at the Swap, that
you just bought, is called "Don Miller". (Haaa...Sally.....)

Sally--the long-leafed--green-speckled one I gave you is called "My Special Angel".

How do I know? Hcmcdole (Butch) and I have started long e-mailing. He is an absolute
Begonia addict. Has hundreds and hundreds--and knows the name of them all.
He sent me pictures of his Begonias--ALL over his yard--on the ground--
like a ground cover...Crazy!

Normally--you will find him on the Computer Forum chiming in with good advice.
That is how we started...I had issues with my computer...

He hated just being able to post ONE picture at a time on D-mails--and hopped over
to e-mailing. OK with me...
Need to send him a "Hi"--with some pictures of my garden. It has been a while...

1 & 2 Here is the small Begonia I am talking about....
3--This is one from Olga--she calls it her "Spanish Begonia". I have several.
It is called "Lana"--or maybe "Sophie Cecile"...

Don't have a pic of your long-leafed one, sally. YOU do!

G.

edited to add that the "Don Miller" Begonia can take full sun.

Gorgeous begonias, Gita! The Angel Wing I got from you last year isn't blooming yet after getting a drastic prune a couple of months ago.

Catmint, it's in my amended clay. I think that area was sheet mulched. There's very dense rocky clay under the organic layer.

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

SS--Your begonia may not bloom this year--the blooms for on top of the stems.

Since I ALWAYS cut mine back--I seldom see any blooms...
Just luscious foliage.

Mount Laurel, NJ(Zone 7a)

G. I may have your special angel begonia too... it was from you and has speckles

1) chocolate zinnia - actually it's not called that, I have to look up the name. It looks chocolate to me though, which is dull and unusual for a zinnia
2) I forgot to take a pic of our first chocolate cosmos bloom! oh well here is a pic taken today
3) catbird taking a dip
4) potato blooms
5) daylilies and rose of sharon in front of New Dawn Redwood
edited to mention that the dead wood showing to the left was a yellow butterfly bush that didn't survive winter. I still have to chop it down

Wind, that chocolate zinnia is very striking looking! Love the photo of the catbird enjoying the bath.

SSG that's interesting about the lupine doing well in the clay soil in full sun.

Mount Laurel, NJ(Zone 7a)

SS your creeping time looks so happy!

Seq, I like your Agastache NOID
and Scutellaria resinosa Smoky Hills

I have a house plant that reminds me of the Scutellaria, lavender blooms and all, but when I put it outside it was not a happy camper, so I took it back in to revive it. I have it growing under a table lamp now. How do you like the Scutellaria?

Silver Spring, MD(Zone 7a)

Thanks, Wind! I'm in love with your chocolate cosmos! I'm in need of more dark-colored blooms. Did you grow yours from seed?

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

wind--

I don't think I have a good picture of that begonia.

Sally--you had a nice picture-- Here! I Googled it. This is from PF.

So many beautiful flowers! Love those lilies. Mine are mostly deer food :o(.

Wind, that plant of yours looks like a Sea Holly.

Here are a few from my garden.

1. Flowering Maple from Muddy (thank you!). Blooming non-stop. Must find out how to propagate it.
2. The only delphinium that I didn't kill. Don't remember the variety without checking my notes.
3. Brug 'Dr Seuss'
4. Brug 'Xenia'
5. Calla Lily 'Picasso'

1. Rudbeckia growing through Red Amaranth, both self seed
2. Lysimachia punctata 'Alexander'
3. Alpine Catchfly
4. Bitter Melon - the flowers are not much to look at, but smell like Jasmin. Does anybody know how to cook bitter melons?

Silver Spring, MD(Zone 7a)

Holly, I love the colors of the sea holly and daylily together.

Donner, what beautiful blooms! The rudbeckia and amaranth are lovely together.

Lucketts, VA(Zone 7a)

Donner, I've tried bitter melon. I suggest that the best way to cook it is for someone else's meal. ;-)

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

Gita, thank you for the Begonia information. I've added those names to my journal.
so many pretty flowers!!!!!!

Damascus, MD(Zone 7a)

LOL! David! People in southern China and southeast Asia cook bitter melons, but I have never tried. I grew them for the sweet scent of the flowers. I discovered that by accident a few years ago when I thought I was growing baby gourds :o).

Very pretty color combo, Holly.

Donner--SO good to see yu post! I (we) have missed you!

Have you been THAT busy at work? Hope you come to the Swap.

I am promising myself not to have many plants to swap. It would be nice
not to have any at all--but that is not going to happen.....;o(

g.

Lititz, PA(Zone 6b)

Interesting that you still have a Lupine flowering SSG....even more interesting that it is doing so in full sun. You've got an odd one there.

Wind, that Dawn Redwood is looking quite nice, how tall is it?

Donner: I really like that flowering maple? What is the botanical name? I've never seen something like that before.

Lucketts, VA(Zone 7a)

A couple of new Lily blooms today:

Sequoia, the flowering maple is an Abutilon hybridum. I am not sure what variety it is.

Silver Spring, MD(Zone 7a)

Such beautiful lilies, David!

I managed a limp-around the yard this morning and was pleasantly surprised to see some new blooms, and everything flourishing--including the weeds LOL! On the positive side, despite not being able to tend to anything not even the bindweed I found--ack!--I enjoyed just being in my garden and looking for the pleasure of looking--sort of like being forced to slow down. Tons of skippers, Cabbage Whites chasing each other, numerous bee species, crickets chirping-- everything humming along happily.

1) Sunflowers
2) Butterfly Weed & Phlox 'Laura'
3) A rebloom of my Foxglove
4) Wildflower patch
5) Hibiscus 'Plum Crazy' & marigold in background

2) Cosmos, Denver Daisy, Veronica, & Marigold in background
3) NoID pink astilbe finally blooming
4) Crocosmia & Cosmos
5) Simple pleasures--vinca, snapdragon, & petunia greeting visitors on the front steps

Love all the blooms! The gardens out here in Oregon are beautiful. Roses everywhere, after all Portland is the Rose City. The ones that really stand out to me are the crocosmia. I have some, but, not in the right spot for them. I will need to remedy that situation or get some more bulbs.

At the farmer's market yesterday I got an Acer palmatum 'Viridis'. A green lace leaf Japanese maple. It is almost hip high to me, so it's pretty tall for $7.00. Jeff wondered what it was and I said interior decoration for the RV. Hehehehe. I chose one that didn't stick out all over, so it won't take up too much room when traveling down the highway. They had lovely ones for $12, but much larger and I didn't want to be running down the highway behind the RV because it took up my space. Hahahahaha

LOL Jan--pretty tree and what a great buy for $7.00!
