FIRST FLOWERS OF SUMMER!! Early July Edition :)

Lititz, PA(Zone 6b)

Very interesting GT. It's not super showy but very pretty up close :) It looks cool with the pink leaflets underneath the bloom.

Lucketts, VA(Zone 7a)

Becomes more showy as the season progresses and additional whorls build on top of one another. It can look like this: http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-W74DkQsbfic/UcYVBMEh2kI/AAAAAAAABak/LWsZoSGCmwQ/s1600/084.JPG , but not in my yard unfortunately.

Lititz, PA(Zone 6b)

Oh wow, even the leaves are spotted. That looks really cool!

Dover, PA(Zone 6b)

GT beautiful bloom, Monarda punctata
On shredded leaves, I just love them for the beds but just way too much work for me. A few years ago I went down to Josh's house as he has tons (really tons) of leaves each fall. Way too many to just mow up. Josh, two of his neighbors and me shredded them all up. Filled our whole trailer 4 X 8 with 3ft sides. Even with a good sized shredder till you raked them then fed them into the shredder which blew them on to a tarp which then was drug to the trailer. It took so long. I've tried sucking them up with my leaf blower/vac and that produced a nice product but seemed too bulky and cumbersome just for a small amount of finished product. For me mowing and bagging them is about the easiest way I know but I don't really have enough leaves in my yard to do that.

ssg, I'll take that as a request... I have probably totally lost the tag by now. Large bright clear yellow flowers, I love the dark stamens.

Thanks Sally! :-)

ssg I think it is Hyperion, I got it from John (and Rubyw)

David---

Been meaning to ask you hoe the 3 Stinking iris did that I gave you?

I never look at mine--it is just a pile of leaves--but it did bloom--
as there is now a fat seed pod on it.

If you want the rest of it--I will be happy to dig the whole thing up
and take it to the swap. LMK. Gita

I love the Great mullein, Sally! It is a striking plant. I get it here and there in the garden, and love it.

SSN, your milkweed must be in a lot of shade to bloom so late. Mine finished blooming about 2 - 3 weeks ago. I normally cut mine all the way down to the last few sets of leaves to get a 2nd bloom later.

On Saturday morning I noticed the first bloom on my one and only DL. Did I take a picture? Noooo, I'm not that smart!! Figured I could get to it when I got home, but I was just too drained... waited too long and now that bloom is on on the ground. :( It's not more buds on it though, just ready to BURST (hopefully tomorrow!?), so if there is one, I will be sure to take a pic and share it! I'm just so excited though; my first DL, and it had NO bloom stalks on it when I installed it 3 weeks ago.. Wheee!!! =)

Lititz, PA(Zone 6b)

Nice Speedie, too bad they only last for a day :)

annapolis, MD(Zone 7b)

SSG, since your Asclepias tuberosa milkweed is blooming now, it may be the selection 'Gay Butterfles' which are just starting to bloom for me, too. In my pic you can see the orange blooms . The one yellow bloom is from another selection called 'Hello Yellow'

Donner I cut mine back too for possible second bloom and because Monarch cats do better with tender new growth than tough older leaves! I do the same with Common and Swamp Milkweed except when I plan to collect seeds.

Gita, your pot of Tropical Milkweed looks great and should come into bloom shortly.

Judy, I was thinking of you as I was driving to and from the dump earlier. There's this big field that I have to drive past to get there (not a drive I make often, so it's nice to see the changes since the last time I went past)... anyway, this field, probably 2-3 square acres, was FULL of Swamp Milkweed!!!! I mean, wall-to-wall, as far back as my eye could see, every square inch FULL - WOW!!! Made me think of you and gave me a big smile! =)

Silver Spring, MD(Zone 7a)

That is very cool Speedie! :-)

Somewhere in, MD(Zone 7b)

I wish I'd had my iPod with me to take some pics... wouldn't have been very good ones though, the field is on the "wrong" side of the road. :(

OK, got a pic of the current single bloom on the Black Eyed Susan Daylily. She sure is pretty, I look forward to her multiplying!

Wow, that coloring is pretty accurate to a BES. Very nice :)

Thank you! I must say I'm quite pleased with her, and it's all thanks to you pushers.. uhhh enablers .. errrr.. helpful folks that I gave it a try! < =D

Lititz, PA(Zone 6b)

Lol...you can only lead a horse to water....

Hi, my name is Susan, and I'm a plantaholic. =)

Silver Spring, MD(Zone 7a)

Is anyone else seeing blooms on their phlox Jeana? What a gorgeous pink flower! I should have gotten 5 more! :)

annapolis, MD(Zone 7b)

My Phlox Jeanna have been blooming for a while now and have attracted many pollinators just like North Creek notes said...way more than other Phlox. The pic below is Jeanna on the left and Felicity (from Critter) on the right to compare the bloom size.

I have also been enjoying the Calico Aster 'Lady in Black' which stays dark leaved in mostly full sum and has just started blooming

3rd pic is Joe Pye 'Baby Joe' in part shade.

And finally Echinacea 'Cheyenne Spirit' returned from last year (4 out of 7 pots made it thru winter)

beautiful Coleup! My phlox Jeana and Lady in black are nowhere near blooming.

Silver Spring, MD(Zone 7a)

How do you all like your plumbago? I never thought much about them until I saw them in bloom. Very pretty! They look like blue phlox.

Lucketts, VA(Zone 7a)

A few new blooms.

Lily 'Casa Blanca'
Lily 'Starfighter'
Purple Coneflower
Phlox 'David'
Gray-headed Coneflower - Ratibida pinnata

very pretty, all!
My first Casa Blanca will open tomorrow. So many of my plants are extra tall this year- except that.

Somewhere in, MD(Zone 7b)

What a super-pretty Coneflower, I've never seen one like that before. It sure makes a bold statement!

I absolutely LOVE my Plumbago! It does not grow aggressively where I have it, and it's strategically placed so that I can "prune" it with the lawn mower. ;) When pruned, it fills back out really well, fuller and with more blooms. It just doesn't get any better! What's extra nice about it is, in late Summer the leaves get all red, but it continues to bloom - the blue flowers against the red foliage are gorgeous!!

Judy, I really like your Jeanna Phlox; the smaller blooms are just so darned pretty!

Lucketts, VA(Zone 7a)

Sally, what is with the super-sized plants this year? So many things taller than normal, taller than references indicate. While our Casa Blancas are normal sized like yours, some of our Lilies like 'Stargazer' and 'Muscadet are over 6 feet tall, our Marshmallow about 8 feet. Did I shrink over the winter?

Somewhere in, MD(Zone 7b)

Many lilies need a cold period to grow well. Considering the cold we had this past Winter, (length of time and temps), I bet that contributed to, at least for the Stargazer, the major boost in size.

Damascus, MD(Zone 7a)

I love the 'Casa Blanca', David! Its fragrance is the best!

The yellow coneflowers are so pretty!

Silver Spring, MD(Zone 7a)

LOL David--I must have shrunk, too! My M fistulosa is as tall as me, and my tallest sunflower is at least 7'.

Beautiful blooms! That gray coneflower is very pretty! I had not heard of these before.

Lucketts, VA(Zone 7a)

Speaking of M. fistulosa, I saw a magnificent hillside of this in bloom Monday. Anyone traveling west on I70 past Frederick, MD, this week, get off at the rest area on South Mountain. As you drive from the parking area, the exit road takes you behind the facilities. On the left there is a whole hillside covered with a drift of this plant in full bloom, very striking.

Silver Spring, MD(Zone 7a)

Sounds beautiful! I've been very pleased with my M. fistulosa and would be happy to have more of it sprout up in my garden.

Lititz, PA(Zone 6b)

I like that ratibida too GT, very nice! I was supposed to get a ratibida columnifera 'mexican hat' this year but instead received a ratibida columnifera 'yellow'. Still a nice plant but I'm a little disappointed nonetheless. It's very floriferous though, so that's nice. It's in our xeric garden.
