FIRST FLOWERS OF SUMMER!! Early July Edition :)

Dover, PA(Zone 6b)

I really like that Daylily, too. Yes, the Trumpet Lily came from last years ADR buy. I probably have a tag on it but I think you are right about it being Candy Club.

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

Many asst. topics covered today---so i will just keep it short (so she says..;o)

--I have not seen ANT caterpillars anywhere in my garden. Last year--I was overrun.

--Holly--Your trumpet lily in pic. #4 above has so many buds! WOW!!!
I bet you get dizzy just walking past them. They small so good!

--Moths: I found one today at work--just laying on the ground as i was watering.
It, kind of, blew off the top shelf of some plants I was watering.
Unfortunately--the wings have already taken a beating and are starting to shred.
The body is bright orange & brownish striped and very soft to the touch. Seems full...

David--I await your ID'ing this one....The wing span is 6" tip to tip.

Wind, I have that plant in pic #1 the name escapes me at the moment and it's not listed in my Journal.

Interesting moth, Gita. Looks pretty battered up and faded.

Gita, I believe that you found a very beat up Royal Walnut Moth. Their caterpillars are very cool, called Hickory Horn Devils. See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Citheronia_regalis

Silver Spring, MD(Zone 7a)

ooh, Jan, that first one reminds me of the sea holly (Eryngium planum) 'Blue Hobbit' that I've been seeing at the nursery! It's one I've been tempted to buy but so far have resisted.

Beautiful lilies, Holly! The 'Candy Club' is very pretty. I also like the coral colored daylily at the end of your 2nd series--beautiful color.

Silver Spring, MD(Zone 7a)

Good eye, David! And I agree that caterpillar is very cool! :-)

Mount Laurel, NJ(Zone 7a)

thanks Cat... it's sea holly! TY couldn't think of the name. I couldn't find it in my journal either

that sure does look like the ID for the moth!
this pic shows the body http://www.silkmoths.bizland.com/sample4.htm

Speaking of cool caterpillars, I found this guy crawling across my meadow/lawn the other day while I was out tending to things. When I moved the grass around him he immediately curled up into a tight ball. I was thinking he might be a woolly bear but am not sure. Does anyone have a positive ID for him? He was quite large and very furry and mostly reddish-brown, except for the black stripey ends.

It looks like a wooly bear to me, but I'm not sure either.

Silver Spring, MD(Zone 7a)

So, do you think maybe he's predicting a mild winter this coming year? ;-)

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

Thanks, David----

This is the second large Moth I have found....the other was several years ago--
also at HD--right on the sidewalk. You ID'd this one also....I still have it...

Went looking for the picture---seems I have quite a few in my collection---
but the one I found at the HD--I still have to find a picture...

Too late to go searching.....sorry! Later-gater....

Smart man!!! That's YOU!

Bed time for me.....Gita

Lucketts, VA(Zone 7a)

Not a wooly bear, though I can't remember what it is.

ditto!

The Royal Walnut Moth probably beat itself to death around the big parking lot lights at the store

ssg, I have had 'some' Sanseveria bloom, not sure if that one. It must be happy!

We've been mowing every week. Mark hates when the grass gets tall enough to feel it on his ankles. Plus, have to keep it short enough to clean up after Dog. We have plenty of crickets and all other beasts.

Dover, PA(Zone 6b)

thanks Catmint for the ID on the sea holly I just couldn't pull that one out of my head at the time. I like mine but they are a floppy prickly plant that needs support. I have been thinking of removing mine. You are welcome to some of it if you decide you want one.

Silver Spring, MD(Zone 7a)

oh Holly, I'd love to try the sea holly! Thanks so much! :-)

just love the buds on phlox... reminds me of a soft serve cone lol

our phlox just started blooming today ^_^

haven't had time for any pics yet today - too busy trying to water - pretty dry here

Lucketts, VA(Zone 7a)

Wind, had to go back and look at the buds on the Phlox, really do look like soft serve cones. :-)

Lititz, PA(Zone 6b)

Lol, yeah you're right Wind. At first I was like, what is she talking about but then clicked on the picture and saw.

me three

Lucketts, VA(Zone 7a)

That makes sense since it was a gift from AspenHill, and all three of us love ice cream.

Lucketts, VA(Zone 7a)

Me five - those buds do look like an ice cream cone! Remember the joke I played on David about the ROS? Anyway, the "David's Lavender" was what I had really found at the sale for him. Not that phlox is that unusual, but I had to get it for him because of the name!

Silver Spring, MD(Zone 7a)

Lovely blooms David. I especially like the Echinops.

Salem Cnty, NJ(Zone 7b)

Okay, I looked too and it looks like black raspberry ice cream. YUM!!!!

Lucketts, VA(Zone 7a)

2. Lily No ID

Black raspberry is my favorite!!

Lovely blooms GT! I really enjoy your photos; you and Ecnalg have wonderful plants. What sort of sun does your Scutellaria get?

Lucketts, VA(Zone 7a)

Thanks Sequoia, we have lots of plants for sure, but not much that passes as gardens. As for exposure, I don't think that any spot other than on our roof gets more than 3-4 hours of direct sun. Lots of bright shade though. We have 6 or 7 species of Scutellaria around the yard, some in day-long high shade (shade where tree branches are high up, allowing a good amount of light).

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

((applause)) David

I'm home and fairly idle due to 'It's Summer' lol

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

Goodness! I am SO behind showing my latest.....

1--My BIG Pot--getting bigger,,,,(minus Wren nest)--first pink Canna to bloom.
Remember--last year I bought 3 potted, pink Cannas?

2--Cardinal Climber and white petunia.

3--Front bed--see the red Coreopsis all over?

4--Inky Fingers (2 cuttings) marching on....and also one of the pink cannas.

5--My new IKEA rack--holding mostly Spider plants.Botton shelf--3 Pregnant Onions

Continuing---

1--Kitchen side bed--shaping up.

2-One of my containers--Datura growing in the middle--late!

3--Monster Fancy Ditch Lilies

4--Monster Lily blooms--close up

5--Smaller version of Monster Lily--the Stump Lily by Bird bath.

A few more---just odds and ends....

1--My only Acalypha that made it...

2--Cherokee Purple Tomatoes--2 plants

3--Mouse ear Hosta in bloom.

4--My neighbor, Olga's, cutting from her Mophead Hydrangea.
Made it through the winter-- and is blooming....Too cute!

5--A beautiful picture of my Pakistani neighbor, Samirah. She was
bringing me flowers. Need to crop this one and frame it for her...
Seldom see her without her scarf on her head. She looks so nice without it.

Nice GT, I might have to try out a Scutellaria next spring and see how it does in the south side of my Honeylocust garden. I'm seeing that it is definitely lacking in mid summer color and needs some help.

G: Nice flowers! Is that Samirah's sport bike too?? Lol

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

haha Jeff, you nut

Gita, it's great that you have a friendly relationship, after being concerned when they ripped everything out and added the fence. I love casual portraits like that.

Silver Spring, MD(Zone 7a)

Love all those natives David!

Sorry to hear about your outpatient procedure. Hope all is well.

Silver Spring, MD(Zone 7a)

Gita, beautiful blooms as usual--you have such a good eye for color.

My Rose of Sharon finally bloomed today! Managed to get out and enjoy a few new blooms today.

1) Crocosmia opening
2) Rose of Sharon 'Minerva' just opened
3) First gladiolus bloom
4) Calamintha 'Blue Cloud'--hard to really capture the tiny blossoms in a photo
5) Zinnia fully opened

It was such a beautiful day. Hope everyone was able to get out and enjoy for at least a little bit. My time was very brief--just a few minutes this morning before work and then again after work. Hoping for nice weather again tomorrow!
