2014 N Central TX RU May 18th (Arlington) TRADE THREAD #2

Baytown, TX(Zone 9b)

SPWD got you down for Iris and Amaryllis :)

Dallas, TX

SPWD - Bringing you Southern Wood Ferns. They will be freshly dug up & not potted. (This will prevent me from messing them up when trying to pot them.) If I only had a camera I'd post a picture of how lovely they truly are.

Bananna, Bananna, Bananna - Wherever have you been? We will miss you if you're not at the RU. I will especially miss you b/c you're one of the peeps I've met!

Josephine, Arlington, TX(Zone 8a)

Yes Anna, you have to come at least to say hello.

Baytown, TX(Zone 9b)

tx_flower_child I would love some of the fern you have. I really love ferns and so easy to grow. I am getting very excited as some of you I have met and others I can't wait to meet.

I want to thank Marty for making this possiblef or me to come. I know I could go to Smockette's mom's with her as I met her last year but look forward to getting to know Marty better :)

ILJ99 - Got you down for Southern Wood ferns.

(Becky), Lipan, TX(Zone 7b)

Thanks all! I am looking forward to next Sunday, SO MUCH! Yall are a great bunch, making me feel so welcome :D

Houston Heights, TX(Zone 9a)

Flowerchild, I wanted to get back with you on the coral vine. It is an annual usually. Only if the winter is very mild does it come back from the root so just the growth it can make in one season is all the vine you will have. The one I had last year did not seem to be heavy at all. Maybe someone else will give their opinion too.

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

Becky, just wait til you get the RU!! It's so much fun!

Rancho Santa Rita, TX(Zone 8a)

Josephine, just dropping by to say YES thank Q
I would love the opuntia pad.

Josephine, Arlington, TX(Zone 8a)

You are welcome Becky.

Houston Heights, TX(Zone 9a)

SPWD, dont forget the Gaillardia suaves seeds!

(Becky), Lipan, TX(Zone 7b)

Steadycam, good call, I got it :)

Dallas, TX

Steadycam Thanks for telling me about the coral vine. I know how pretty it is. I'm willing to give it a try if you still have any. If not, no worries.

McKinney, TX(Zone 8a)

I'm out of town so can't make it this year. Ya'll have fun and happy trading. Flower child, you'll like the coral vines. Oddly, those deep freezes we had apparently got the crowns and took mine out, but I did get a couple more from down south and planted them. They're looking great now. Will have to remember to cut the tops off to the ground and mulch the top heavily in the fall first freeze.

Here's some happy smiling spring faces.....

I have plenty. I had to sow seeds because the freeze killed mine. When I sow seeds, Im so bad at it that I always sow more than I need, sometimes just to get one plant I'll bring you a couple.

Baytown, TX(Zone 9b)

Marty if you have anymore I would love 1 maybe 2

Houston Heights, TX(Zone 9a)

I have enough for you two and too, Sandy.

Houston Heights, TX(Zone 9a)

Ive been busy counting and labelling today and watering. The wind has been so strong in the last few days, everything is dry and tattered.

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

The wind has been brutal. I must tell everyone that most of what I had dug and potted has not gone through the shock yet. If you will give them shade and a little TLC they should rebound. Most everything had great roots just need patience. I was so busy and didn't not get started soon enough.

Thanks N3L for the Salvia pentstemoniodes!

Forgot to say.....don't everyone wait until the day before to decide what to bring food wise. Post you & your guest's offerings now please. http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/1359209/

Yeah same here, some things weren't looking so hot, even had the coral nymph salvia almost completely rot away. They are gonna be real small seedlings now, sorry.. Been double checking to make sure I had enough else to cover my pretrades. I got a little unorganized and started freaking out a little. All is good and I will bring extras of certain things. And does anyone care for different native seeds? I have some wildflower surplus I can bring and people can take what they want. Anyone?

Dallas, TX

SPWD - Re your offer of seeds. Probably a good idea to just bring them. Especially since not everyone is pre-trading. Just my 2 cents worth.

Steadycam - I'll give the coral vine a try. Thanks!

ILJ99 - Are you still looking for a non-red salvia? I might be able to get a cutting of a white one if that interests you. Saw a very pretty one today and was thinking of asking the 'owner' for a cutting.

ALL - I had put the word out in my neighborhood that I'd be glad to take extra pots that people have. Someone left me a slew of them in my driveway today. Most are the round ones that are bigger than quarts but don't think they are gallon-sized. I'd check but they're all in the trunk of my car right now. Anyway, this is just an FYI since I might not ever finish any type of inventory. Especially if the weather stays as windy as it's been lately.

Did someone mention counting and labeling? Ack!

Baytown, TX(Zone 9b)

I would love to try a cutting of a white salvia. thanks

Dallas, TX

ILJ99 - no promises but will try to score the white salvia. For both of us! Anyway, I added it to what I'm giving you.

Baytown, TX(Zone 9b)

Ok cool no problem if you don't get it. :)

Baytown, TX(Zone 9b)

Does anyone have a willow tree I could get some cuttings of? I want to make willow water for rooting plants

Arlington, TX

ILJ I would take another spider lily if you still have some?

(Becky), Lipan, TX(Zone 7b)

Ilovejesus - I can get you lots of willow branches. How many are you wanting? I'm guessing new green growth? Have you ever made willow water before? I'd heard of it, looked into it, but never followed through.. Psshh story of my life lol

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

MESSAGE FROM MARTY (STEADYCAM) She called me earlier this evening and said her computer has died, cause unknown as yet. Going to try to get it fixed tomorrow. So if you don't hear back not to worry, she still plans to be here Sunday, and will catch up when she can.

Josephine, Arlington, TX(Zone 8a)

Thank you for the message Sheila.

Baytown, TX(Zone 9b)

SPWD If you can cut them in around 15" pieces (Don't have to be exact as using the measurement to tell you how many) . I would take 30 + whatever you can do. I don't think it has to be new growth. You soak the branch in room temp water for 24 hours. I haven't tried it but want to. I also understand you can freeze the willow water for future use. I may try to freeze as Ice cubes then put into a ziploc bag so I can use 1 cube at a time and not waste any. ((((((THANKS))))) The tips do contain more salicylic acid than the the rest. Actually sounds like it can be used as root stimulator on new plantings

Gather willow branches directly from the tree by clipping them off with a sharp pair of scissors or garden shears. Each twig should be less than half an inch in diameter. You may use fallen branches if they are very fresh.

Strip all the leaves off the willow branches and discard them. Cut each branch into small pieces a couple of inches long. The shorter the pieces, the more auxin (the hormone that encourages root growth) will leach out of the wood to help stimulate root growth on your plant clippings.

ILJ99 - Before you close out your list, if you still have any Red Spider Lily Lycoris radiate, may I have some please?

(Becky), Lipan, TX(Zone 7b)

Oh yay! Just one amaryllis if you can, Sandy :)

Dallas, TX

Baja Blue - Looking at your list again and saw some things I might want to bravely try. Like the heirloom tomatoes, esp. Cherokee Purple. Whatcha got? Flamme' or Eve's Purple Ball? (I'm kinda cheating b/c I'm looking at pictures/descriptions in 'The Heirloom Tomato Cookbook' so I could throw out a lot of names.)

How hot are your hot peppers? I like hot but don't want anything to do with an habenero!

I always see where people plant marigolds around their tomatoes. Is there any particular reason to do this? Like attract pollinators? If so, I'd be interested in some. Otherwise not.

Josephine, Arlington, TX(Zone 8a)

Cheryl, may I have some Zinnia grandiflora seeds please?

(Becky), Lipan, TX(Zone 7b)

Flower child, the marigolds help to deter pests, it works too!

Does anyone want tomato seedlings? I have a lot of exotic starts ready to get planted. They're a little smaller than their nursery counterparts, but they are hardened off and most are indeterminate so you've got time :)

Josephine, Arlington, TX(Zone 8a)

Stillplays, may i have your Pitcher sage seedlings, I will bring you Turks cap.
