SHOPPING LISTS, Spring 2014 What are you getting? PART DEUX
When I returned home from last week's baby sitting I found lots of stuff in the garage. Ghost Weigela and Boomerang Lilac from Bluestone, Hot Lips, Hot Papaya Echinacea, and Cherry Phlox from Santa Rosa; Callas from Lakeside Callas, Caladium from Caladiums 4 Less and a Crape Myrtle from EBay. Still waiting for more rose bushes and other flowering shrubs. I'm slowly transitioning to flowering shrubs instead of so many perennials that are becoming difficult to keep up with.
Of course, I have all those perennial seedlings coming up under lights and winter sown!!
WooHoo Roses, Sounds like a wonderful thing to come home to.
Sounds like a nice collection Roses :)
So what is Green Springs??
Re Green Springs -- see the "big sale" entry for May 17 here: http://www.fairfaxcounty.gov/parks/greenspring/events.htm In addition to really excellent vendors, a large number of local plant clubs have tables with very low prices on plants dug by their members. Green Springs is itself a gorgeous park with inspiring gardens. It tries not to baby the plants it grows so you can get a realistic idea of what plants might look like in your own gardens.
I'm freaking going this year. Year after I year I hear how gorgeous and wonderful it is. I can't take it anymore!!
Lol. With my luck the DC metro area will get inches of rain on the 17th. I'm knocking on wood..I'm going to look for a log to knock on as well.
wow, sounds like I shouldn't miss this one!
I can't make it this year but I highly recommend it. It's gorgeous! I fell in love with baptisia after seeing it there.
Re Green Springs: Just make sure you build in time to peruse their gardens. The sale itself is so overwhelming that it is easy to forget their gorgeous gardens. Also -- if at all possible, bring a wagon or something wheeled to put your loot into. I think they have loaners but you'll have a hard time getting your hands on one. I bought a rusted Radio Flyer wagon for $5 a few years ago just for the Green Springs sale, and painted in with green Rustoleum....
Maybe we can all meet at some appointed time mid-day. There are food vendors...
Try to be there at whatever time it starts (9am?). There will be hoards that descend like vultures on carrion just as the sale it opens.
And you will likely not be able to park too close by, so be aware.
All the vendors that I have ever bought from take personal checks. Can't remember about credit cards.
Also -- be sure to look for the "club" sales -- their prices are MUCH lower than some of the pricey vendors. (Some of the vendors have very reasonable prices, so just "walk on by" those that don't.)
And don't bring my DH. I will try not to. He is very nice for the first 1/2 hour, and then starts with the "is it time to go yet?" Maybe this would be a good day for him to go fishing....
Happy, I'll be there when it opens. The vendors usually set up in a big circle, so I should be able to spot you. If I don't spot you, I'll call you on your cell. I'll keep tabs on this post to see who else is going and if/where/when to meet mid-day.
The local garden club in Lancaster is having a plant sale. I'm going to hit that up early; it says there's a better selection the earlier you go. I'm pretty excited, hopefully their prices are good. I've never gone to one before.
Sequoia: Club sales are a hoot. The early birds are literally salivating.
Once again, I wish that I lived closer to your more southern areas. Not much is going on here yet.
Yeah me too Roses....everything for me is a 2 hour drive to them :(
Costco has **giant** climbing hydrangeas for $45. I don't think it would fit even in our small SUV.
I checked with Behnke's, and they're all sold out of Blue Baron. I'm just a little bit obsessed with this rhododendron.
Holly, where did you purchase the Blue Baron? Do you remember if they had any more? Do you think they would ship it to MD? :D I already know which plants I'm going to remove to make room for this one.
I saw Poukhanense azalea at Behnke's today. Mine died this winter and I almost bought another one. It's the light pink color that I love but don't have enough of.
ssg, I got it from Stouffers Garden Center. Think I paid about $35 for it I would be glad to pick one up and bring it along to the swap if you would want it.
I have some rooted Climbing Hydrangeas I will bring to the swap, pretty nice size to them.
Oh wow Holly, that would be wonderful! Thank you!
I think I'll go to Green Springs as well and it would be great to meet up. Virginia Native Plant Society is one of the clubs selling plants. I'm a member and get a discount, so I always buy plants from them. I've gone to Green Springs sales 3 times and haven't toured the gardens yet; how bad is that?!
A tour of the gardens definitely sounds in order, Muddy! :-)
Wonder if I can get there without going on the Beltway?? HaHaHa
Meeting up with Catbird today to do some power shopping and tour Paca Gardens. Quaker Market is also today...that's where I got all those free orchids to share last Spring. And those 4 pkg perennials for $ 4 will probably jump in our carts as well as the gal pots of B&B Salvia for $6.99.
Might swing by local HD where there are really big full variegated Weigelia in 5 gal size for $20!
They also have a special on hanging baskets of what they are calling Boston Ferns for $6.99.
The ferns really are Kimberly Queens and not Boston! Kimberlies arn't hardy here but are wonderful fillers for lots of spaceces as they grow upright. I figure I can get 3 plants out of each pot which will double in size in no time.
Coleup, somehow I missed the $6.99 pot of B&B Salvia! Can I have one, please? Mine didn't make it through the winter!! And about that beltway-- you can get to my place without going on the beltway! Just take Rte 29 to Olney--we're not far from there, then I could drive you. ;-)
ooo I'd love to see your yard! You have done so much and no beltway!
I was going to get one or two of the BB Salvia, so I'll just get 3 or four. They had ten there on Thurs pm.
Have a great day all///Off to shop/
Would love to share my yard with a garden-loving friend! You should definitely come. Others like to look but little interest in the details. ;-)
coleup--
Are you saying HD had B&B Salvias???
I have not been at work since Wed. Will be tomorrow---have to check!
Mine never came back. I would need 3 or 4 of them.
1--I did buy 3 beautiful 6" pots of Heliatropes at the Dundalk Florist--
a pricey Nursery near my daughter's place. But--I have not seen these anywhere else--
so I spent the money. Not so bad--really-- full plants from P.W. in a 6" pot for $5.99.
2--Also picked up 2--- 5" pots of this Coleus--" Wizard Pineapple"...new to me! $2.99 ea.
3--Bedding plants I bought at Chapel Hill Nursery here the other day.
Full trays of 8-- 4-packs--$11.99. Otherwise--$1.99 each.
Lots of planting to do. Will get on it today--mostly my pots and W-boxes
The sisters are spending a couple days together at Aina's place.
G.
The B&B Salvias are at a local nursery not HD.
I just gotta say LOL @ "Power Shopping", love it! =)
SSG, Picked up your Blue Baron this afternoon.
Also an 8ft pagoda dogwood.
Woohoo! Thank you, Holly!
Our pleasure, Ric picked out one with a really nice shape.
Uh oh. Rain is predicted for the sale at Green Springs, on Saturday. I will go regardless, being a fool. I do wish it would rain today instead -- it is so dry and I haven't pulled out my hoses yet. There were a few drops, but they blew over.
This place got a rave review from one of the Master gardeners at Baltimore Co MG sale last weekend Sun Nursery in Woodbine, lovely part of Howard County
http://www.sunnurseries.com/index.html
Wow, look at all the greenhouses in that photo! That would be a fun field trip! :-D
I visited Sun Nurseries last fall when I happened to be in that part of Howard Co. I was hoping to pick up a tree on sale, but they weren't having any sales at all. Healthy looking plants and prices comparable to Behnkes, I think.
I finally picked up lemongrass at Meadows. One is going in the herb garden and the other two are in containers by the front and back doors. I'm looking forward to seeing its mosquito repellant qualities in action!
SSG, I found a lemongrass recently also! It was a bit tattered looking but I got it anyway.
I'm hoping to raise some lemon grass from the seeds that I just received. Maybe I'll have something by the end of the summer.
What's your recipe plan for the lemon grass, if any.
Roses, I like southeast Asian dishes, so that's where the lemongrass will go. Just a little bit of lemongrass goes a long way.
My daughter is from Vietnam and we love Vietnamese food, which uses a lot of lemongrass. However cooking and I don't get along that well so will probably just smell it. ;-)
I like going to the Asian restaurants in New York City. Maybe I should try some Thai recipes myself!!
