SHOPPING LISTS, Spring 2014 What are you getting? PART DEUX

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

Mad for Glads??

We had a mix-up with our glad assortment from ADR, resulting in some substitutions and some extra bulbs. The original (wholesale) price was $2 per pack of 10. On these extras, if I can sell off at least 16 packs, I'm dropping the price to $1 per pack. !!

They can be picked up this coming Wednesday at SSG's, for those planning to be at the NC divvy-up, or at the end of May at the spring swap, or any time between now & then from me in Frederick (where you can also pick daffodils, free). If you're interested, go to this thread: http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/1352109/#new Thanks!

Terri, There use to be some native Azeleas growing in the woods behind the house. Not sure if they are still growing there now. The were really pretty.
Sally, We had some of those bees a couple of years ago. They are huge and like bare sandy soil. I think this is what you may be talking about.
http://www.stonybrook.edu/ehs/pest/cicada-killers.shtml
We lost the repeat blooming azalea this winter and the Pieris japonica both have been growing poorly in the front raised bed that is shady and pretty dry. I knew the Azalea might be a bit iffy in our Zone, I lost the other one last year and replaced it with a different Azalea and that one is doing fine. Not sure about the Pieris. I may replace them again and give it one more try before I look for some different bushes for that area.

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

Cicada killers are fascinating! I watched one once. But not what I was referring to.

Silver Spring, MD(Zone 7a)

I'm really thankful for the group buys. Really helps me restrain myself from impulse purchases of perennials.

Evergreens, on the other hand... I bought two dwarf conifers yesterday. One is a white conifer for full shade, perfect for the shady spot by the front door. And it's going to get miniature Christmas decorations and teeny Christmas lights!

Silver Spring, MD(Zone 7a)

I'm thankful for the group buys also SSG!

Lititz, PA(Zone 6b)

Me as well :) However I am very susceptible to impulse purchases :)

Lazy S&S told me two of my plants that I ordered wouldn't be available until early August. I canceled and am going to get the one from Plantdelights but now comes the issue of going back over all their plants and quickly got a large wish list that I now have to narrow down :(

Oh well, I'd rather be addicted to plants than drugs!!

annapolis, MD(Zone 7b)

There are still several shares of some choice plants available on my order with North Creek Nursery! LMK

Athyrium filix-femina 'Lady in Red' ($10.50 for 6 plants)
-Athyrium niponicum 'Regal Red' ($ 9.00 for 6)
-Athyrium x Branford Rambler ($9.90 for 6)
-Dryopteris erythrosora 'Brilliance' ($9.00 for 6)
-Dryopteris goldiana ($9.00 for 6)

Viola 'Silver Gem' ($10.40 for 8 plants in the 32 plug size)

Geranium 'Expresso' ($17.20 for 8 plants 32 plug size)

annapolis, MD(Zone 7b)

Had a real chuckle when I attended the FONA plant sale at the National Arboretum on Sat and saw they had included a chees maker in their sale. Of course without plants there would be no cheese........!

Silver Spring, MD(Zone 7a)

Yeah I'm too susceptible to that impulse buy thing too. :-(

I am definitely still interested in the silver gem as well.

Lucketts, VA(Zone 7a)

I went to Meadows Farms on Saturday morning, specifically to find 2 clematis for each of 2 small trellises. Found the clematis, but also came home with aquilegia 'Winky Pink', viola 'Hearthrob', and a shrimp plant in full bloom pruned into a standard. That shrimp plant was definitely an impulse buy - sitting right by the cash register LOL.

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

This is listed in the "Upcoming Events in the MAF.

Another Master Gardeners Plant Sale--on Shawan Rd. in Hunt valley.
Just off of I-83.

So many plant sales going on in May! Hope some of you around
the Baltimore Area can make this one...Sounds good!

My DD and her SO will be here--so I am at the "mercy" of their schedules....
Would like to go--but may not be able to.....

Terri--

I have been growing 2 "Winky" Columbines for years. One purple--one pink.

I always called them just that--"Winky Purple" and "Winky Pink:"...
Then--a few years ago--someone (birder???) ID'd the pink one
as "Dorothy Rose Columbine".

Is this what you are calling "Winky Pink"??? Tall stems--and blooms very similar
to the purple one...
If "YES"---then you have a "Dorothy Rose"....
Below-the two "winky's"... Is this your pink one???

Lucketts, VA(Zone 7a)

Hi Gita, no the pink one I got is not the 'Dorothy Rose'. It is definitely 'Winky Pink' - looks just like your purple one, but is pink. I've been trying to grow 'Dorothy Rose' from your seeds, but haven't had much luck :(

Chevy Chase, MD(Zone 7a)

ssg, what is the white conifer for full shade you bought, pray tell?

Silver Spring, MD(Zone 7a)

It's Cryptomeria japonica 'Knaptonensis.' Mine looks like this, but only about 5-6 inches tall. It's a cutie pie! http://www.buchholznursery.com/plant_page.html?id=beedc

I also got a Chamaecyparis 'Habari,' which is a funny looking evergreen. Mine kind of looks like this: http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/showimage/363512/

Chevy Chase, MD(Zone 7a)

ssg, the Cryptomeria japonica 'Knaptonensis' is gorgeous and will go beautifully with your color scheme.

The Habari is definitely a plant with a sense of humor!

Silver Spring, MD(Zone 7a)

Those are both beautiful trees, SSG--I love the frosted look of the Cryptomeria, and the burnished golden look of the other! :-)

Dover, PA(Zone 6b)

SSG, Those are just beautiful plants.

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

Agreed! I can just picture your diminutive frosted conifer with teeny tiny ornaments and twinkling LEDs. Sweeeet!

Tall shepherd's hooks and sturdy arbor panels for $8 and $10 at the Aldi's here (PA)... resisted them this afternoon but might have to go back in the morning.

I've got clematis coming from MamaJack's (sale is still open! if you want just 1 or 2, you can order/ship with me)... most of them are compact varieties that can "scramble around" in the garden, but surely one or two of them could use a trellis. LOL

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

Here's a trellis I bought last April from Aldis...$10.

One of my Clematis now resides on it...Love the birdies...It is all metal.

They also have bags of garden Soil--even if it seems to have a lot of
slivered mulch pieces in it--for $2.99. I have bought several bags already.
I think this soil would provide very good drainage...

Also--don't forget Big Lots----they have the BIG bag of "Organic Choice
Garden Soil" for just $8. sitting outside their entrance door.
HD's is $12.98....I think...

This weeks deals at HD are PW annuals--4/$10. reg. $3.98 each.
Lots of Gerbera Daisies, Geraniums and bedding Dahlias.
Also--Asparagus Ferns...haven't seen them for long time....Great "spiller"
plants for containers...

Check HD's add--if you get it on Wednesdays....

If anyone sees large (but not huge) containers that will overwinter outside -- therefore not terra cotta -- maybe 12" to 18" across -- on deep deep discount, please let me know.... Costco has huge pots at great prices, but not smaller ones.

annapolis, MD(Zone 7b)

SSG, Happy, Aspenhill
The Dwarf Mock Orange I over wintered for you and brought to the Divy-up last Wed was 'Snow Dwarf' half price $5.25.

Dwarf Mock Orange Philadelphus "Snow Dwarf'

Philadelphus ‘Snow Dwarf’ full sun partial shade

If space is a premium in your garden and you’re searching for an ambrosial delight, you may want to try this short-sized, winter-rugged Canadian beauty. Oval-shaped dark green leaves and upright arching stems craft a closely knit foil for the crisp white abundance of splendid 4-petaled flowers. With its neat, dwarf appearance and perfumed summer blossoms, ‘Snow Dwarf’ can be featured as a container specimen or positioned somewhere close to the frontlines.

Blooms May – June.

Size: 2'–3' high x 2'–3' wide; hardy to zone 4

Chevy Chase, MD(Zone 7a)

Perfect! Judy, can you dmail me the address where I should mail you a check for it? Thanks!

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

happy, I know what you mean- seems like I can find the foam, look like ceramic, pots up to about ten inches across- not quite big enough! I eyed the huge ceramic ones in my younger days, but now they make my back ache looking at them.

annapolis, MD(Zone 7b)

SSG I think you mentioned that you were looking for a pink blooming upright deciduous azalea? While out and about this week end one did catch my eye Varanadoes Phlox Pink $27 2 1/2+ tall in 5 gal container at Davidsonville Nursery just down the road from Homestead towards Ace. Left on Riva Road at flashing light and next immediate right into Nursery. They and Ace have some nice Triple Play Phlox and Ace will be getting its Native Plants shipments in this week.

Happy the place I've had the most luck for finding different sized inexpensive containers is HD.

Chevy Chase, MD(Zone 7a)

Thanks, Catmint; I'll try there.

Silver Spring, MD(Zone 7a)

My local HD doesn't offer much by way of gardening needs but at least they have containers that won't break the bank! :-)

Silver Spring, MD(Zone 7a)

That is a gorgeous pink azalea. Too bad I already got a deciduous azalea...

It seems to be a pretty wide azalea, though. I don't know if I can give it the width it needs.

annapolis, MD(Zone 7b)

Expensive, cheap, or free I think that it is more difficult to find 'containers' out there than a good pair of shoes! Too small, too large, too flimsy. too heavy, too light, poor drainage and that doesn't begin to address shape or color!

Right now the bright neon yellow oblong reycycling bins my county used to give out free are filling in (durable, deep, drainage holes, free.some with lids and wheels..) until I find some thing better. or just right for me.

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

I'm starting to look at just the SHAPE of containers, since spray paint is now an option for plastics.

Happy, what do you think is a good deep discount price for a 12-14" non-ceramic (foam or composite) pot? And how many would you want if I came across some? I found some 14" terra cotta colored foam ones a few years back, wish I'd bought more!

Kinsman (not deep discounts LOL but some nice things) has free shipping through TONIGHT at midnight, promo code KCAFS4

So? Where does it say you can only have one?? LOL

SSG: Collectors never say they can't have one because they already have one :)

I'm just playing with you though ;P

Salem Cnty, NJ(Zone 7b)

Hehehehe

Silver Spring, MD(Zone 7a)

On my .14 acre lot, the only way I can add a new tree now is if something dies.

And fortunately for me, the azalea I planted last year looks to be dead! LOL

Silver Spring, MD(Zone 7a)

Haha the surprising benefit of having certain plants die-- LOL!

Chevy Chase, MD(Zone 7a)

BTW, maybe because of all this rain, Meadows Farm is having a one-day 50% off sale on one quart perennials, tomorrow. You have to bring a coupon -- here's the link: http://www.meadowsfarms.com/Garden-Centers/VIPs-Save-More-$$$/See-Our-Weekly-Ad/April-30-One-Day-Deal/4-30-14-ODD-MF.aspx

Critter -- I answered your container question by dmail.

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

Hmm, wonder if I could manage to "just happen to" swing by on my way home... Thanks, Happy!

Chevy Chase, MD(Zone 7a)

I'm sure you could figure out a route that would put it directly en route!

Dover, PA(Zone 6b)

Happy, Do you have a Tractor Supply any where near you I picked up a couple today that I really like. They are pretty big but smaller than the Costo pots Critter got for me a few year ago. $19.00 Spent enough time today out in the rain all warm and cozy on the couch so you aren't getting pictures or sizesl LOL
