LOL indeed! Holly, I doubt it; we're 3 doors over the DC line so tractors are few and far between in these parts! Are they owned by Southern States? (And I'd love to see the photos of the ones you bought.)
SHOPPING LISTS, Spring 2014 What are you getting? PART DEUX
Tomorrow with sizes.
Don't go nuts -- I'm no where near a Tractor Supply. I'll just salivate!
Happy, I "scored" three 14" pots this afternoon at Aldi's here in PGH for $10 each. I'll try to get you a photo soon... if you don't want them, somebody else might, or I'll use them. They're a fairly standard profile (like a regular terra cotta pot) with a wide rim, interior diameter more like 12" at the top, and they're green, not lime green, closer to kelly green.
Oh, and the Aldi's here also has the same trellis that Gita got last year, still $10. :-)
Spray paint- without good prep I have mixed results with spray paint. Some will peel after a couple years.
thanks, Sally... wonder if washing with dish soap or wiping with alcohol would remove any grease or residue for better results?
Critter: I would LOVE to acquire your pot score. Thank you!
Yay -- the Meadows Farms one-day (today) 1/2 price sale on one quart perennials was extended until Thursday due to the weather.
pots are yours, Happy, and I'm picking up 2 trellises today if possible for another DGer... anybody else want a trellis like Gita posted? LMK soon! Today is the start of their new sale week, but they usually keep special buy stuff like the trellises around until sold out. They also had sturdy green plastic garden stakes, 4 ft. long, 4 for $3 (not sure if just stiff plastic or with metal core). I got some of those for glass plate flowers.
Yay! And thanks.
Heya, Terp! got your ears on? Aldi's was putting out plants yesterday for the sale starting today... $5 perennials. Do you have 'Paul's Glory' Hosta? If not, it seems like you should... I can try to snag you a pot wtih 2-3 eyes. LMK
My 3-year-old cousin wants to grow his own strawberries in his own strawberry pot!
Where can I get a cute little strawberry jar for him? HD or Lowes?
I'm glad I saved the extras from Gita and Typ. :)
HD has some. See link. This is for the Silver Spring location.

I also found some on Amazon. Might as well start him out early!
Wow everyone on this forum is just so helpful to everyone else! So heartwarming to be able to ask something and get so many positive helpful suggestions! :-). And people so willing to shop and pick up things for others too! This must just be the nicest friendliest most helpful group of people ever! So glad I found this forum to be a part of! :-)
Catmint, we're happy to have you here, too!
There's an article here somewhere on setting up a strawberry pot for better watering (= more berries and thus happier 3 year old)... drilled pvc pipe placed down center of pot as I recall, but let me see if I can find the link...
Here ya go! http://davesgarden.com/guides/articles/view/964/
I like the tip about placing small red objects around the plants to confuse birds so they give up before actual ripe berries appear. Joyanna would love covering some rocks with red paint or nail polish!
Seriously, this is the most generous and kindest group of gardeners. :)
:-) So glad to be a part of things! :-)
I did the PVC thing with some large strawberry pots some years ago, and at least for me, it didn't work. Maybe it only works with very small pots. But in my experience, unless you can get the little tiny roots close enough to the PVC pipe, the water still doesn't get to them. My strawberry plants dried up and died. Maybe if I had hosed the pots down twice a day to keep the baby roots wet, it would have worked. But then the roots might never have grown inward towards the PVC pipe.
I think smaller strawberry pots work better. My parents had great success with a pretty small one. I'm thinking of getting a plastic one for my cousin since they're probably less likely to dry out.
That may well be the issue -- my pots were large. This could be a good occasion to use moisture crystals (unless they present any food safety issues).
Catmint, I couldn't agree more. This is a super-duper group of caring people!!! DG helped me through a low time when caring for my mom.
I am living vicariously through all of you this year. I love reading about what you all are getting and swapping. it is very difficult to not jump up and shout that I'll take this or that. Hehehehe. Just knowing that any new plant here would be neglected for 3 months makes it a little easier to say no.
I picked up a 'Paul's Glory' hosta this morning, couldn't help myself. The PGH Aldi's has adorable little Japanese Maples for $12, don't know if our local ones would have them in this week also..
Jill, I saw the same JM at a local Aldi's. They had a lot of perennials, too, but they seemed to be somewhat neglected. Good idea to get them early!
Those little maples were so cute! I saw them on my way out of town, didn't really have time to contemplate them LOL or decide on my favorite... Not sure where I'd put one out in the garden, but they'd look great in a big container!
This weeks HD add has: Expires May, 7th.
1 gal perennials--3/$10.
Vigoro 4" pots of annuals---4/$10.
2lb. jar of Osmacote--$7.99
Just FYI...G.
Sounds as if I need to make an expedition to HD!
I got a climbing hydrangea yesterday at Meadow Farms for $30. What a great sale.
It looks really big and healthy. I wasn't able to keep the climber I got at year's swap alive. I should've potted it up instead of planting it in the ground.
I have been putting drilled pvc pipes in my strawberry jar containers. I think they work very well. I don't grow strawberries in my jars, coleus and succlents are what I put in mine. The idea is that the water goes in the pipes and is released all though the pot and doesn't just wash out the top holes.
I know that's the theory, but all I can say is it didn't pan out for me for strawberries in a big pot. I think their roots never got close enough to the water since my strawberry plants were tiny -- I guess they just weren't vigorous to fill in quickly the way coleus does. And succulents don't need a ton of moisture....
If I were to do it again, I think I'd hose down the pots every day to expedite the growth of the little plants. We really tried hard that "strawberry" season. I was so disappointed! I had visions of shortcake....
New coupon from Meadows Farms for 25% off one plant. Also, looks like I need to sign up for their card, as their ad mentioned earning 1 "Meadows Farm Buck" for every $10 spent.
I saw the HD specials, also, but looks like the perennials might be just daisies, hostas, and gaillardias for that price. Still worth a look, esp. as they have big ferns for $7 (I want one for Mom).
Coupons are so much fun! :-)
If you're local to Silver Spring, MD or wanting to get out of the house this Saturday go check out the local garden club sale.
Details are posted in the MAG event's thread

Oh myyyyyyy, look at that blue Rhodie! WOW! I may need to make room for this one.
Terp, are you going to the Silver Spring sale?
SSG, I can't speak for Terp, but I'm going. I may possible go to the Hyattsville Native Plant sale first -- it starts at 8am. http://hes-pta.org/events/3rd-annual-native-plant-sale/ But I'm not bowled over by the list of plants and it is a drive. The Silver Spring sale was only so-so last year, but it is convenient.
My favorite very local sale last year was the sale at the Farm Woman's market in DC that starts at 7am on 5/15. http://www.farmwomensmarket.com/ That was fabulous -- last year was the first year I attended so I don't know if it is always so good! I may have to be out of town, and if so, I have retained my DH to go shopping for me!
And of course (heart be still), the Green Springs sale....
Happy, when is the Green Springs sale again?
Nice selections Holly! I had a blue baron but just removed it this spring. I had moved it towards the end of the summer when we had that drought and it didn't do so hot then but this winter did it in. Very nice though. It was always the first to bloom at our house.
ssg I will not be going. I have other plans for this weekend.
Green Springs is May 17. Quite the heroin den for me.
