Jan, I wouldn't even know how to begin making those "fries", but they sure are great.....

Salem Cnty, NJ(Zone 7b)

Apparently I didn't either, hehehehehe!!!

Hope you have a nice Memorial Day....sad for me, remembering my DH & brother, both veterans, but I invite friends for a picnic & we have a good time......

Good for you, Marilyn! Doing something for others is a great remedy for sadness. Have already kept you and many others who lost loved ones who served in my prayers today. It is a somber day, but a very important time to be thankful. Thinking of Celeste too.

Lexington, MA(Zone 6a)

Wishing all the blessings and fond remembrances of the day.

Lexington, MA(Zone 6a)

Happy Fathers Day to all the dads out there!

And happy remembrances to everyone about that special man.

My dad was interested in just about everything. Because our forebears came from vinyards, he grew grapes and wrote to me about his crops while I was away at college. His family had been very close to the land, and it is their legacy of being moved to create beauty with trees and plants that gives me pleasure when I garden.

Thomaston, CT

Hope all the Dad's had a wonderful day. My Dad has been gone almost 18 years. He was a gardener as well, & I always picked him a bouquet of my peonies. Today, my old ones are just starting to open.....

Anyone know what this is? Grows fast and makes it through winter.

Have no idea.

Looks like a weed......

Fairfield County, CT(Zone 6b)

Sherrie - that is poke weed. The berries are poisonous but many people eat the leaves and call it poke salet.

Can any one remember the name of the book that has a theory that plants are designed to make us want to grow them?

Memory

Thomaston, CT

No....never heard of that....sounds interesting.

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

visited my hosta nursery Sunday with the intention of bringing home 3 new hosta - 3 turned into 5 and 3 additional dwarf conifers - all are planted with the required rearrangement/transplanting completed.

Hosta's were Blackjack, T. blue shadows, gypsy rose, bellue (named after the owners dog), and can't recall the last one.

conifers were P.G. Pixie, tom thumb, and a third p.o. that is a full shade small tree that has white coloring on a green back ground.

Fairfield County, CT(Zone 6b)

Nice haul!

Thomaston, CT

Hostas can always find a home somewhere, right?

Lexington, MA(Zone 6a)

Sounds great.

I scored a few variegated hostas at the Lyman estate plant sale: Janet, Paul's Glory and Eternal Flame. Golden Tiara from the RU will also fit with them. Also, couldn't resist a black and blue salvia for the hummers and a French lavender to smell divine.

Thomaston, CT

Saw a hummer yesterday .....he was into nicotiana in my DIL"S flowerpot!

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

nice haul rosemary

hummers are loving the honeysuckle vines here right now.

Lexington, MA(Zone 6a)

I love my yellow Clayton II honeysuckle vine also, so the black and blue salvia went by it to make sure the hummers get the point. Note to self, put the terra cotta birdbath outside now.

South Hamilton, MA

Flowers the hummer like are not yet in bloom: hosta, mainly. No vines here except weeds.

Thomaston, CT

The hummers love the butterfly bushes, too......called my son last night & told him to bring the chain saw.....my butterfly bush is gone except for a single shoot.....

Fairfield County, CT(Zone 6b)

I remembered the name of the book - Botany of Desire. I picked it up at Amazon for a couple of bucks.

Thanks, Memory.

Met with 20 of my neighbors on Sunday.....we are fighting an individual from another town who wants to put in an open, live ammunition, gun range at the bottom of our hill...really.....who would do that to a neighborhood? Our town officers are in favor of it....I'm just so aggravated right now.....the hearing is July 16th....our group has hired a lawyer, am hoping we can stop this.

South Hamilton, MA

good luck I take it that your town officers don't live in the neighborhood.

Lexington, MA(Zone 6a)

Gun ranges don't belong anywhere near where people live! Can you show the town officials how much more tax revenue they might get from, say, a 9 hole golf course? Behaviors always change quickest when people can see a better alternative.

Thomaston, CT

This is only a 9 acre parcel....we have very little land in our town because there are 3 federal flood control dams that cover thousands of acres. There is a scenic railroad that goes along the back of the property, & the proposed Greenway is also along the back.....this is just a recipe for disaster. Lucy, one selectman does live nearby, but he won't be able to vote on the project.

South Hamilton, MA

Good luck on your fight!

Lexington, MA(Zone 6a)

We had a strange project where the selectmen wanted to install a trash compactor for the region. We and apparently everyone else found examples of other similar projects to show how much space they really took. Our town has a small area for their compost pile but a trash compactor in Isreal required 12 acres of land, and Google Earth showed how ugly and how many bulldozers would be prowling around. There were reports of terrible odors too. It was a sign of how out of touch town officials can become.

Good luck in the fight, Marilyn.

Thomaston, CT

Thanks....I have gathered quite a few names on the petition, we have the state's largest TV station involved, all the local papers....hopefully, we'll win......

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

good luck Marilyn - lived near a gun club before - it really was not too bad after you got use to the shots going off.

here the state is trying to have a nat'l gas pipe line put through town and the plan is to take land by eminent demand - almost every home has signs on there property protesting the pipe line - the state is using a loop hole in the law and plans to take mostly conservation land. I think there will be a revolution if they move forward.

South Hamilton, MA

But why to you have to here the shots? there is a shooting range here, but so surrounded by trees, that there is no noise. Used to be a town dump which was closed.

Thomaston, CT

This range is right in the river valley......the shots will echo from ridge to ridge...also it's so close, it's almost in my back yard. Went to the P & Z meeting last night....they moved the date of the hearing to the 22nd. Told the crowd the range would not be discussed last night & to leave if that's the only reason we came! Just a nasty attitude......these people are public servants, but acted like Napoleon!

South Hamilton, MA

Can you vote them out next election, or are they appointed? I realize that it doesn't solve the present problem.

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

learned more about that pipeline - it is planned to through several supposedly protected water ways - or I should say under, the Nissittissitt River that homes protected native brown trout. pepperell springs (where Belmont springs water use to come from as well a coke's bottled water that is also protected, the Nashua river, and through numerous protected conservation areas.

the fight is on.

Lexington, MA(Zone 6a)

It must be that time. I just read about a proposed lengthening of the runways at Hanscomb Air force base to accomodate yet another commercial airline that wants to locate there (we've dealt with this issue before but they have always gone broke in the location). We've belonged to some of the organizations that are fighting it, so looks like our involvement has to renew. Problem is tremendous noise pollution always, including over the Minuteman National Park, but in addition, it is a dangerous claim that a private company leasing from Massport is able to circumvent all the wetlands protection acts that are in place. The new runway would result in filling-in two acres or more of protected wetlands. It's really sad. I would love to be able to use a local airport, but not under these conditions. The last time this came up, it got squashed because of traffic patterns. Now, coincidentially, there is a highway plan for route 2 to get a bridge over I-95. Both headlines were in the local paper at the same time. Huh?

Thomaston, CT

Lucy, they are an appointed board, but that doesn't give them the right to act so snottily.....Bill & Rosemary .....sounds like you have environmental problems as well....

South Hamilton, MA

Rosemary--What does the Audubon society say about fill in the land.

If the board is 'appointed', who did the appointing? sort of 'scratch my back & I will do yours' situation? Hope the fight gets them out of there.

Lexington, MA(Zone 6a)

Good question about the conservation groups, including Audubon. The actual Audubon reservation in Lincoln is on the other side of town. Up until now the fight was about reducing noise pollution over the neighborhoods and the National park, and it has been fought many times with decibel recordings of low-flying aircraft. This new plan was just sprung on the public this week. Obviously it has been part of some 15-year expansion plan.
