CLOSED: 2014 Spring Round Robin Seed Swap

Anderson, IN(Zone 6a)

Mipii My address is correct . Thank you ! I am so hoping ..
Saturday feels like a slow Sunday here ,,hmmmm.

Mount Sterling, KY(Zone 6b)

I could use at least 100 or 200, but if they are a lot cheaper to buy in bulk, I will use them eventually. Maybe up to 500. Sorry I didn't get back to you sooner, but day has been really hectic!
I have 2 granddaughters, ages 2 & 3,who are having their combined birthday party tomorrow and my daughter is about to drive me NUTS! She always stresses over these kids parties. I try to tell her They will be happy with a cake and balloons and a few presents to open. It's the grownups who usually expect the "big" party. Anyhow I am up to my eyeballs in birthday prep.

If I have one extravagance it is probably my greenhouse and my plants, but even then I try to save money (though it is hard, sometimes). I have been known to spend my lunch money on flowers instead of lunch. What can I say? ;)

(Robin) Blissfield, MI(Zone 6a)

I've got to place an order for a heat mat, if they have glassine envelopes I'll order them for you. Hope you had fun for your GD's birthdays! My daughter is the same way with my grandchildren...party spoiled (I don't get it either).

Mount Sterling, KY(Zone 6b)

Well the party is over. The kid's all loved TK's Gymnastics Center. They had a blast playing on the trampoline, bounce house, ball pits, balance beams, and so on. We had to drag them out of there, literally. I am glad that is done. A person of my age has no business on a trampoline! I may not be able to move in the morning, lol. I sure hope no one was taking video! I did manage not to fall on my face or embarrass my family or myself. My 5 yr old grandson said " Come on Nanny I won't let you fall" he was so sweet. How could I say no?

Robin, I appreciate the offer to order the glassine envelopes. But don't order them unless you get a really good deal on the price and the shipping. If you get enough for both of us I will pay for some of the shipping if you do order. But I do have some left, so it not an urgent thing if you don't get to order them, don't worry about it.
Did you get a deal on your heat mat? I have been looking at ordering one of those too. But again I had more important things that needed to be done first. The high cost of heating this winter has eaten up my extra allowance, that I usually spend on frivolous stuff. I am thinking of using a florescent (full spectrum) desk lamp to keep a constant temperature until I get a heat mat.

Prescott, AZ(Zone 7b)

I just thought I'd put in my 2 cents. I have a large heat mat (holds 4 large germination trays) and several small (hold 1 tray) and the smaller ones can be considerably more economical. They just cost less to run and are easier to find a spot for ie in a windowsill (no need for a light if you get it in a windowsill). Of course that depends on how many flats you can keep full. I feel obligated to fill the mat up so I'm not wasting electricity. Check out GreenhouseMegaStore, I have buying a lot from them lately.

(Robin) Blissfield, MI(Zone 6a)

Thanks for your 2 cents Dee. I like Greenhouse Megastore and actually put a mat in my cart. They charged me $7 and some change...all was good until I put two more things into the cart. Row cover and 100 little plastic plant tags. Clearly the weight or the shipping box didn't jump much but the shipping cost more than tripled. That really bugs me, I'll call them tomorrow to see if I can get any satisfaction.

Prescott, AZ(Zone 7b)

Don't you just hate that. I have three books in my cart at BookOutlet.com and I just didn't order because they want like $10 for shipping. It's three books, they can do that in an large envelope.
Oh well, I'm kidding myself thinking that I want to learn to knit little bugs and butterflies anyway.

(Becky), Lipan, TX(Zone 7b)

Glad you got the seeds before the robin landed Juhur, and good luck choosing.. You sound like me when it comes to seeds.. How can I pick just one! I think my head may explode when I finally receive the box and am confronted with that amount of seed!! System overload! Lol

Those discussing heat mats, I saw on another thread, someone uses a water bed heater, not cheap new, but they can be found on eBay and craigslist cheap! I worry about repurposing items that potentially be a fire hazzard but I think with proper ventilation it would be fine.

(Becky), Lipan, TX(Zone 7b)

Nanny, aren't those gym places a blast?! I took my now 10 year old to a party at a gymnastics center when he was in preschool.. By the end of it the kids were so wore out.. they fell asleep before we got home. Priceless!!

Iowa City, IA(Zone 5a)

Hey everyone! I've been away from DG for over a month. Busy with sewing and other indoor projects. It's been a long cold winter here, and the ground is still frozen. :( I haz a sad.

I don't have a lot of seeds to contribute this time, but will happily lighten the load. ;)
Gypsy

(Robin) Blissfield, MI(Zone 6a)

Dee reading material is supposed to be generously discounted, I'd call the store as sometimes it's a glitch in shipping prices. Greenhouse Megastore just re-evaluated my shipping costs from $23. to $9. by phone.

Gypsy, nice to see you back! I have a great variety to share, just not a lot of each so will be taking requests for my seed.

(Becky), Lipan, TX(Zone 7b)

Mipii I am so exited about some of your haves. I've been dying for that clerodendrum. Does yours smell like peanut butter?

Mount Sterling, KY(Zone 6b)

Yes those places are great! My babies loved it! The kids all went to sleep on the way home. We all were worn out.
They can ship books media mail which is cheaper than standard shipping. Shipping is crazy high these days.

(Becky), Lipan, TX(Zone 7b)

Amanda, I'd love some of your purple castor bean, but you're after me in the robin. Want me to send you a SASE?

Just lurking... But have to laugh! It's so much fun to watch all you newbies plowing through that huge seed stash! I was there myself not long ago... Enjoy, you all!

Mount Sterling, KY(Zone 6b)

Well, Juhur7 you had me a little worried at first until I thought about it. Then I had to laugh! One can never tell when you are serious or joking!
There are a lot of seeds in there, for sure! It took me a lot longer than I expected to get through them all. I would say you are doing very well to be 1/3 of the way thru already.

Anderson, IN(Zone 6a)

I was looking through seeds until midnight , only thing that went wrong , I ran out of clear eye-ball power ,, lol
Tomorrow two more collections too look at and oink through ,and a couple to add then on it will go !!!
My counter looked like an assembly line , of bags , pen , and paper and seeds ,

open , switch , label , seal , open , switch , label, seal , lol
I'm in Hog Heaven !!!LOL,^_^^_^^_^

(Robin) Blissfield, MI(Zone 6a)

Juhur please take your time, it's not everyday you get a big box of seeds! Take three days even if you think you might not need to...enjoy!

Prescott, AZ(Zone 7b)

lowhen - I really want some of your Eupatorium variabile "variegatum". I'm trying to get a patch purple joe pye going this year, but variegated, ohhhh.
Amanda - I am so ashamed . . . Castor bean grows here really easy, at least I thought it was going to be easy. I have two "sticks" of purple castor bean in my back yard and little hope they will ever do anything but die. I don't have a clue why they are so unhappy either. Maybe I didn't water them enough, I thought they could take it!

(Robin) Blissfield, MI(Zone 6a)

Becky, the clerodendrum are commercial seeds, I bought them for the cool looking flower and the fragrance was intriguing too (I hope the smell like peanut butter). I haven't yet grown it but am just as excited as you are...come on spring weather...give it to me!

Nanny, thanks for so sweetly looking out for me, when I wanted to look out for you... and failed. I placed my heat mat order cause they got me a much better shipping price but didn't have any glassine envelopes at Greenhouse Megastore. You did find a good deal with FREE shipping, got to love that. Thanks so much. I still be on the lookout for yours.

Mount Sterling, KY(Zone 6b)

Juhur7-You sound like you have got it under control there! If you are planning on harvesting seed from the Hyacinth bean, I would plant some ASAP. You can grow them in a container if you provide some support for them to climb on. I put them in a pot and train them to grow up the wrought iron rail up the steps to the patio. Or plant them on the South side so they have a little longer growing season to mature. They are pretty easy to sprout. I put 3 or 4 beans in a good size pot (at least 12 inches or larger) then they don't need transplanting, unless you want to put them in the ground.

Robin, Actually it was because of you I found the deal on the heat mat, so I am going to order one. So you didn't fail at all, you helped me in a different way, is all. And truly at this moment in time, I need the heat worse than the seed envelopes. It's all good! I'm glad you got a better price on the shipping!

(Robin) Blissfield, MI(Zone 6a)

Glad to be able to contribute something...anything.

(Becky), Lipan, TX(Zone 7b)

Haha Juhur, I am picturing you diving into the box of seed the same way Scrooge McDuck dives in his vault of money like a swimming pool, doing the backstroke, LOL

Robin yes when spring finally gets here I'll send it your way.. Weather keeps getting pretty then BAM! Forties again! I'm over it and ready for my flip flops..
I'm so excited about those peanut butter bush seeds.. I should check to see if the requirements for popcorn plant are the similar and plant them near each other. That would make for some interesting fragrance. Well maybe a bad idea, might make me hungry!

Lol Becky... and chocolate...caramel...mmm, It's actually a good idea, you can have a sweet and savory garden!

Gotta go eat something now.

(Becky), Lipan, TX(Zone 7b)

Don't tempt me.. I can underplant with chocolate mint and destroy the mind with fragrance overload!!! Lol

Hey Nanny, I forgot to say, those cerise queen yarrow you traded me are coming up now, another wintersow success! I was worried they had washed out of their jug with the last rain, but they are there, green and cute, some clinging to the sides of the jug for dear life! I am going to move them inland a bit :)

Has anyone heard from Garry, is he ok? I would be devastated, if I had a greenhouse that is. Hope he was able to salvage his plants and reassemble the greenhouse..

Anderson, IN(Zone 6a)

SPWD LOL That's Me , See Seed Gold !!! ..
I am wondering , it's snowing here 31 degrees ,14 degrees for tonight ,, Wondering Who Did It !! Who turned off the Warmth !!!
I try to add similar amounts as to what I take from the Robin , I'm playing Games that way ! lol
No one gets a little mental with boredom do they? lol
Added some Zinnia while setting last night , a package of new Birdhouse gourd seeds ,
I have an appt cross town tomorrow , so I may have a chance to look for more
I have a couple of others to add , and two more to sort through , and noted I will go back to one I skipped that I wanted as something else was going on around me ) Bet you have all heard that one before also )..lol

Greensboro, NC(Zone 7b)

Just checking in - been working full time now for the Nursery and busy busy almost too busy (yes too busy - i thought it was bad before I started working full time HA!.

Yes, please take your time to go thru the Robin. We said 3 days, 4 if it's absolutely necessary to keep the Robin. Please contact the next person on the robin to ensure they are available to receive. If you don't hear back in 24 hours (give or take an hour) then let me know and I'll try to call them. Otherwise, if we don't hear from them, the Robin goes to the next person on the list and the absentee goes to the end of the list if they still want to participate.

Hope all's well.
G'night.
A.

Greensboro, NC(Zone 7b)

The Clerodendrum in the Robin are kind of a difficult to read label , their in there , still a few of them ..
There nice some nice flowers , and melons in there , A few interesting butterfly host plants also ..

(susie) Hastings, MI(Zone 5a)

Has anyone any standing cypress Ruba seeds ? & what can you tell me about this plant in your garden ? I saw a picture & so pretty want to try it here in my wild garden .

(Becky), Lipan, TX(Zone 7b)

Juhur, it was me! I stole spring, now it's all mine and I don't wanna share! Lol really though we have gorgeous temps in the forecast. 70-80 highs and lows in the 40-50s. I'm so excited, gonna enjoy it before the 100 deg temps arrive..

Amanda, thank you! I was real worried to start this plant last year since we have dogs but I'm not worried about them ingesting anything anymore. Finally have them smartened up a bit LOL

Susie, I just replied to your request in the seed starting thread, not realizing you were in here also! Anyway, I put some ipomopsis seeds in the robin, if there aren't enough I can send you some directly. I still have a whole gallon bag of stems full of seed pods.

About their habit, they grow wild along the roadside and woods edge here, in poor, gravelly, sometimes very shallow soil. They reseed like mad so after a few years you'll have a nice stand. It's biennial so be prepared to wait til the second year for blooms. Because of this, whenever I start a new patch, I overseed like crazy so it's worth it the next year. Sounds like it would be a great candidate for your wild garden, just make sure it gets a lot of sun, don't worry about watering, it is very drought tolerant. They average about 2-3 feet but I've seen them top out at over 4 feet so you might want to put them further back in your bed.

(susie) Hastings, MI(Zone 5a)

TY Becky just sent you a dmail

Mount Sterling, KY(Zone 6b)

Juhur7- Got the seeds you sent, today. Thank You! :)
