I've only seen one Nutria here , weird critter , beaver rat ,,
What a thing to wait until after midnight to talk about .
If I ever had anything all that interesting to say I would probably scare myself ..
Thank heavens for quiet times , obtainable serenity (hopefully ) lol ??
Well winter is a day away , and another summer gone ,, oh well maybe next year ...
NIGHT OWLS ONLY - OPEN: 12 a.m. to 6 a.m. (2nd Call)
Lookit me! I'm awake past midnight.
Been replying to about 2 dozen dmails about the Round Robin trade coming up. I think it's funny also when I am trying to catch up on threads I am watching and if I post.... I'll get to the last one in the list of updated threads, and then someone will reply to MY post and I have to go back to read it. I just HAVE to clear that list of updated threads before I log off. Oddly compulsive. Not like me at all.
Have had a good weekend. Been dog/cat/house sitting again. I try not to impose my standards for animal welfare/care on others, but with old dogs sitting out in the cold, it's hard not to. So the lady happens to be my BFs ex boss lady. With whom he is still in touch. Can't get too bold or opinionated there. But I brought from my house and put down in hers some cardboard boxes and some wool upholstery fabric I happened to have a few rolls of. The dogs acted like they were in heaven. I fed them so many "cookies" I noticed loose stools in the yard, but that didn't stop them from begging for more. Ha hahaha.
Just been really really busy with school, life, DG trading, the works. And we're enjoying the fall weather. Winter? BAH. We put up the circus tent in the front yard again this weekend to protect the Castor Bean from frost. Worked again. We're supposed to dip into the low 20s this week. We talked about the possibility of putting one of our small space heaters under there, but we're wondering whether we will burn down the tarp, the teepee, the circus tent, the plant, and the house all at the same time. Keep you posted.
Phew.
Since I've been on DG for over 2 hours now and have been packing seed box for the Round robin for 2 hours before that, I think it's time to stop and shut this down.
I hope you Night Owls out there think about dropping a line if you're awake. See you soon!
I I am awake and i finally realized I can post during the right hours. Unfortunately I can barely type
It's Tuesday!
Carrie you're a hoot. Posting in the wee hours is not for the faint at heart. Best to stay in bed if you can. Turning on these electronic gadgets stimulate the brain such that it interferes with your sleep. In fact, if you have trouble sleeping it's recommended that you turn off computers an hour or more before bedtime.
Yeah, right!!!
Amanda I was trying to get everybody to send you a D-mail ,,lol
YES ,, and they(electronics) cause tumors , strokes , arthritis , headaches ,and ,,, You know though ) the them , the they,, are sure) their better than cigars and cigarettes for you though !!! ha ha ha ...
Sleep , what is that , elusive creature ,, really shy .. hides real good too !!!
Yes, Amanda and everyone, I KNOW that using my smartphone while "asleep" can screw up my sleep. That's why I try to only play free cell instead of downloading master works to read or anything REALLY interesting. and I (semi-deliberately) have not learned how to make links or copy and paste.
I have an aunt who is now about 80, but when I was younger, she was well-known for cutting articles out she thought you should read and sending them to you, unbidden. They were always from the NYT. Well now, I copy and paste articles onto your FaceBook page if I think you should read them. Much much easier than physically cutting up the newspaper.

Yeah, right!!!
Gee, that's what my sleep doctor said!
well potentially one could keep a record of lost sleep nights. I worked last night so I was mostly on computer at work from 5 to 9, then came home and checked DG while I ate my snack. I'lll have to try and note whether my bad sleep nights tend to be after working PM.
I think you WILL set your plant and everything else on fire if you try to save that castor, Amanda! Weather here says it is 28 so I expect to see real frost when the sun comes up. My castor will be toast.
I use the smartphone when I am in a hotel and can't sleep. Holding that little bright screen few inches from mt face…sheesh
Of course they are related, Sally. We are not meant to be both nocturnal and diurnal, alternating. My DH can't even eat that close to bedtime.
DH had loud, thrashing around, grabbing things nightmares all night and we both had a had time waking up
good morning
I slept oddly well all last week, but here I am tonight. DH was out of town and I let the dog sleep in bed with me, and the latest book and some clean and dirty clothes... I don't know why i feel so awake, ; it feels like frost will finally hit here and I spent all day futsing with plants having fun getting them ready for inside, and also adding things to a new bed in the front yard.
Only saw a live possum once. I came home from work at ten pm and one was on the deck. So strange looking to me. I'm sure you can develop an appreciation tho.
nice to see you lourspolaire
I'm sorry I havn't joined the conversation, but gosh, so many of us are alike for reasons of one or another.
We have a possum out back, he comes up front to the porch garden area and when I go out he keeps walking in front of me out of nowhere, then on to under the truck in the drive. When he is out back, we shine lights at the back alley and feeder tree, and watch his eyes move ad glow at us. I like them, and the raccon that comes once in a while. They stole my goldfish out of the little pond a couple years ago, tho and I ended up with half fish parts all over that area..I was devastated and cried. Right now Joe JUST went to bed,12:30, and I can hear the two turtles banging around in their area downstairs. I am going to go investigate..
so i scooped up some rolypolys and a few worms from the worm farm and threw them in there, now it is very quiet and that was a nice way to end my wake time as I also did some more re=arranging down there it is an hour and some later...
Good morning everybody!!! And goodnight! :D
welp.... it is only 55 tonight.. so weird. windows open.. sheese!
its raining steadily here tonight, for at least the last hour and 1/2 as I have been listening to it. I'm happy for the garden, but just wish I had not left a plant in a bucket where all the rain comes of the shed. i was trying to let it dry out.
We finally got our freeze just a few days ago, now 'mild' again today's warm enough that I was in the yard all afternoon in a sweater. overnight low predicted for Monday or tuesday is the same as the high that day- 63 ! I will open the window that night. I just hope the neighbor's dog is not in all-note bark mode.

Oh Amanda I see you were naughty.....LOL
Well here I am wide awake, can't go to sleep cause I'm still on the computer. I've heard that about turning it off at least an hour before going to bed... but I've found when I'm tried I'm tried, computer screen or no computer screen.
Well the rain last night was a welcome sight as we haven't had much rain except for the first week after we moved in. It rained so much that I thought we would get washed away...
Well since I've still not found work, I'm looking into the master gardener program to see if this might help me after I finish get a job dealing with plants. I would really love to work with starting seeds in a greenhouse, but no one wants ya unless you have RECENT experience in a commercial setting. Home seed planting with pictures just doesn't help. My gosh it not like I'm applying for a position that pays a zillon bucks.....
So the extension office got back to me, the program is on hold, they just got a new agent in and don't know when their will be a new class starting. Well the way my luck goes, about the time they decide on starting one I will have found a job and won't be able to go, cause it sure won't be in the evening. LOL
Ok, I'm outa here, just wanted to say.
Amanda that was a great idea about the cardboard for the puppies. Hay is really great, even if you don't have a confined space to put it in. Dogs just love digging in it to make a bed.
Hope all have a wonderful nights sleep.
Jan
Bummer Jan. Good luck with the job search. You wouldn t think it would be hard getting hired to start seeds. I have wndered about that , whether i would get sick of it if i did it as a job. I sewed for somebody once and didn t likee it.
Hope everybody is ok i heard there were bad storms and tornados. Breezy gusty here
When I worked in a nursery it was never boring.
The people became annoying frequently but there's so much diversity in terms of seed sowing, transplanting, pruning, watering, weeding, trees, shrubs, plants, and of course the wildlife ( think of the birds and bugs and critters in your garden x 10). Of course, there are actually productivity measures in the industry (how any seed trays get done/hour, how many root stock are transplanted/potted up per hour, etc. That part is kind of a drag and unrealistic, I think, but whaddya gonna do? It's a job, after all.

Years ago I tried going to a hort school, but after 3 months of driving 2.5 hours one way and an instructor who screamed at us students I quit. I hated to, but I didn't like the screaming all the time. But while I was there I learned so much being in the greenhouse and starting seeds then transplanting them.
Thanks Amanda for the link will check it out.
Well guess I'm tried enough to give sleep a try.
Hope everyone is tucked into bed for a good nights sleep...LOL
Jan
i work in a library now and I like it, we are a happy place, but every once in a while we joke that if it weren't for the people and the books, this would be a great job….haha
I still love the books ,an oldie but a goodie , nothing like them !!!
Thought I would violate the rules this morning , in favor of ;no rules , no sleep , and searching for a life.. is anything ever like it should be , except nothing , not a thing ,, ever seems to be ,, lol
oh well it is the weekend , remember when that meant something ? or seemed to of ?
I'm still weird .. still the same ... and still ??? whatever ,.
Juhur7
I'm with ya.
I'm up late as I'm having so much fun going through seeds from the DG seed exchange. I look at a package and then look it up on the internet if I can't think what it looks like.. which is most of them....
Ok, got about another hour of playing and then I'm headed to bed. My eyes are getting tried now, so hopefully it won't be the hour, maybe an half hour.
Night one and all.
Jan
So glad you're enjoying the box Jan. I have always enjoyed the round robin.
Fell asleep early like a bear hibernating with a pretty sharp drop in temps overnight. I read an article about our cooler temps lately, and there's some new science afoot. Climate scientists are generally in agreement now in terms of the science, but there are things occurring as the earth changes that were not expected. So this new study going on for the last year is looking at the changing jet stream which is causing those arctic winds to push farther and farther south.
Researchers have linked the extreme weather events in Europe and northern hemisphere to the decline in arctic sea ice. Ice melts. Dark sea is exposed absorbs more heat from the sun. When the temps drop and sea ice forms again the increase in heat in the arctic region ( as water changes to ice it releases heat...this is why a well watered plant does better in the cold/frost) makes changes in the regional atmosphere. There's no consensus because things are changing so rapidly, but it makes sense that the record sea melts this summer and in the recent past would have some impact somewhere.
Equal and opposite force and all that.
Such cheery news and can't even remember what brought me here. 26 is our overnight temp with a high of 37 expected today. 19 overnight tonight/tomorrow morning. I'm going out on a limb here to say that in my experience in the south that's kind of unseasonable. My point further, is that my flannel sheet, micofleece binkie, down alternative comforter, and cotton quilt on top are doing the trick for now. But it kinda sucks to hafta take the dog out when nature calls.
Them's my thoughts on climate change.
And now a word from our sponsors...Ju?
Just found this site and will remember it as I am up most nights. I only sleep for 2-3 hours than I'm up an looking for things to do for 2-3 hours than back to bed but not always. It is now 5:52 am in Somerset, KY
Has anyone heard of a nursery called Fast Growing Trees?
Darn, sorry Amanda, for breaking the rules but we just got back from a three day trip (four maybe). I am awake at night SO MUCH when we travel....but DG on Android is somehow beyond m skills. But I was thinking of you folks at approx. 3 am every night....
Are there any other Night Qwls up and about?
Good Morning Boys and Girls !!!I (remembering BOZO the clown!)^_^ don't know what to say to being a sponsor , I might give that a try as soon as (or the next time I win the lottery ..!!!
Thinking this morning about when Cheesburgers did not have as many cheesy wrinkles as me,
and wondering if we were as cold when we were 14 or 16 as the temperature outside is . Brrrr
ba--by !!!
Cats asleep two rooms away and you can hear the snoring , really a cat that snores and always had .. weird ...
Oh well .. I'm snowed ..lol
ok, finally i remembered/figured out how to stop by and say "hi." this house is noisy at night. dh left for work which is a good reason to be up at this hour. (Just because is a bad reason.) i have to ask....who thinks waking up to pee is involved with being awake? i find once im awake, it's hard to get back to sleep.
I'm awake!
Carrie, hello, I hope you are sleeping.
I find if I wake and get out of bed for any reason it's best not to turn on any supplemental lighting. It screws with your clock.
Geee z it's cold in here, so I'm going to shut this down and pull the binkies up to my chin. Snoopy's at my back keeping me warm, all is good.
G'night!
It's cold here also , I shiver , the cat likes it in here ,. too cold outside ..
Use to be you would hear cats don't like water , only they swim like a fish .. by me though . they don't like snow ,, at all .. mine will sit at the window and meow and growl , looking at me every so often , like saying (I don't like snow !!!)
AH-- lots of blankets and pillows ....^_^
Good morning, Sleepyheads! Up and attem! I seriously taught my older child that green means "get going, everybody!"
Do most oeople stay up late or get up early? I go to bed on time and wake up on time; it's waking up in the middle that confounds me.
Do most people stay up late or get up early? I go to bed on time and wake up on time; it's waking up in the middle that confounds me. [/quote]
Exactly !!!^_^
RED ' IF you can stop in time ....
Well it's midnight at the oasis , 30 degrees with a 19 degree wind chill and 15 mph winds . comfy , if your a penguin .
Well I'm empty of words , all reruns , plotting and plannng about all the things I should be doing , but am not doing . and concerning myself about getting anything done ,,
Ridiculous isn't it ...? ^_^
'Tis.
Tell us what your Thanksgiving looks like. :)
Morning! Thanksgiving for me was going to be Chicken Pot Pie and peach pie with vanilla ice cream, but a friend called and wanted to know if he bought everything if I would consider cooking it and having dinner with him and his wife at my house. Their stove went out and right now they can not get a new stove. So I said yes, I mean whose going to turn down turkey dinner and all the trimmings!! LOL.
our thanksgiving will be with step-son and hiswife and 4 grandchildren. they are lds; we are not, which makes things a little awkward. last year we brought homemade cranberry sauce; i was the only one who ate it, and pumpkin pie that =ame out toos999n and whole wheat bread that was scorned in favor of store white dinner rolla.;
Sorry, cell phone and san serif font combined to make my 6:32 post unreadable. (I thought it was 5-something when I wrote it, too).
"Our Thanksgiving will be with step-son and his wife and our 4 grandchildren. They are LDS (Mormon), we are not, which makes things a little awkward. Last year we brought homemade cranberry sauce and I was the only one who ate it. We also brought pumpkin pie that came out too soon (still jiggly) and whole wheat bread that was scorned in favor of store white dinner rolls."
Amanda, they are not ids. They HAVE ids, egos and super-egos.
Greetings Everyone
Have not posted in a long time.
I am still alive and kicking.
In the mountains - left the kids to mind the homefront. We are Asheville (it was snowing)
Thanksgiving Dinner scheduled at Red Stag Inn
Was in Fla for a very long time with sick sibling. Usually by 12 am I was sleeping - all day at hospital and then long term ventilator facility --he is finally turning the corner. I never was in the right time period to write for night owls thread but I checked in regularly with you all and it KEPT ME GROUNDED - and amused. If I have a bit of advice for you - scrape the $$ together any way you can and purchase long term care insurance. Without it --- well...too long to rant and Thanksgiving not a day to rant - right! I feel like I have been in hell with the care my brother has received. Protecting him a full time job. Anyway - just came to say Happy Thanksgiving to you and yours. Whether your turkey day is busy or quiet - - a crowded table or just you and a grilled cheese and soup, I hope you have many many many things to be thankful for.
Good morning, Night Owls. I had to give it up and get up. My back was hurting. Of course, trying to turn over in bed with 4 cats and a mini dachund sleeping with me for warmth makes it difficult.
wow, rosie, i wish i could get disability insurance. unfortunately my disability was at age 25, when nobody thought of stuff like that. 25 years later that horse has already left the barn. my mother saw what was happenong to me and to my father (he had a devastating stroke in 2006) and purchased long term care insurance!
happy thanksgiving to all the insomniacs!
