NIGHT OWLS ONLY - OPEN: 12 a.m. to 6 a.m. (2nd Call)

(Zone 7a)

Ju, I'm editing out my response to your question, " Does anyone ever really know anyone?" Hopefully someone else might come along with a better response.

Does anyone remember a book that came out years ago called "The Nut Cracks at Midnight" (or something like that). Evidently a wife wrote a book about her DH's remarks during his proscribed sleeping time. I didn't read it, but maybe the book was best left to the imagination.

Well, this isn't the proscribed time to be yakking here. Good luck, Amanda, with meeting the challenge of your test on proscribed burning. I'll be back in a while after I've caught up on a few of my own neglected proscribed to-do's.

It's only 11:26 here, but it's past midnight est. techically a foul, but what else is there to do? I guess I'll go back to free cell.

Monroe, WI(Zone 4b)

Just got back from the local pizza joint. The hubs and I celebrated our anniversary today with a pizza tonight. And enough left for lunch or supper tomorrow night. :>)

Guess I will go to bed and play some Candy Crush. I have been about 3 months on level 147 and would really, REALLY like to move on. Grrrr.............

Been sleeping a little better; my traditional Chinese medicine practitioner gave me a couple of different Chinese herbal things to take, it seems to be helping. I'll take ANYTHING about now.

Milton, MA(Zone 6a)

OMG I discovered my cell phone can play free cell, a type of solitaire. I won most of the games I played last night, but please explain why I'm looking forward so much to not being asleep AGAIN so I can play more.

Greensboro, NC(Zone 7b)

Oh Carrie. You must be sick. Hahaha.

we don't have cable and now and then (like now) I'll watch several episodes of shows I like on Hulu plus which is a service we pay for. And I end up awake till three a.m. Oh look, it's still early!

It's about time for half of us to be going to sleep and the other half to be just waking up. Which half are you? :)

Anderson, IN(Zone 6a)

Oh Well:) it's illusive

Milton, MA(Zone 6a)

Don't usually have computer available when I'm awake! (which I was last night.)

Kansas City (Joyce), MO(Zone 5a)

Well dog and dh woke me up and of course they are back to sleep but I am wide awake....geehz. Bet at 2pm this afternoon I will be in sad shape...rofl. Tried laying in bed but just tossed and turned til that was making me crazy.

Here's some fun:

As we were driving this afternoon I listened to a radio program featuring John G. Rives and his talk on the TED network called "The 4 a.m. mystery."

Described as a time when you're either up way too late or awake way too early, Rives "does 8 minutes of lyrical origami, folding history into a series of coincidences surrounding that most surreal of hours, 4 o'clock in the morning."

Since most of us see 4 a.m. regularly - from both sides - I thought you might like to listen to Rives' witty conspiracy theory:

Enjoy!

Greets:

Coldest night yet here, 41 forecast. A couple of the tropicals looked a little deflated yesterday a.m. I brought in my navel orange just now in between bouts of sleep. It's really the only one I'm invested in. Have scads of plants I'd like to bring in, but where to put?! Not keen on cats this time of year, but given TH opportunity the dogs will try to eat them too.

I am sleeping with the light on since I've moved from living room couch (with two cats on me) to my bed. I spied a spider at the intersection of wall and ceiling that look suspiciously like the one Court ID'd as a brown recluse a week ago. I freaked out a few days ago when I saw the same (?!) Crawling along the edge of th tub downstairs. Ran for a glass and flipped it in so I could try to ID. when I came back it was gone!!! EEEEEEEEK! Since I don't kill things I would just put it out if it were harmless. I saw it down the side of the vanity and swatted at it. Fell behind the waste basket. Couldn't bring myself to move it. :/

Does anyone know what they look like? I've looked at dozens of photos but it seems to be sure you'd have to have it within arm's length to check TH markings. I'd rather not try to get that close, especially to one who has the high ground like now. Figure with TH light on it won't feel so comfy roaming around. Cripes. May not get any more sleep. :D.

But wait! 4 o'clock approacheth.

Downloaded a book from the library called William Shakespeare's Star Wars. Novel approach but I gave it up after a few pages. Th same story written Elizabethan prose. Stretch, yawn.

Welcome Sally! We're always here unless we're doing something else.

Hello Meadow. I have to recommend my Virgin Mobile plan. Unlimited data, text, web. Your payment for this plus voice varies for 300 minutes ($35), 1400 ($45), unlimited ($55). No contract. Especially if you don't have internet service at home. They run on Sprint' s network so there's no lack of coverage. I have had for over a year and delighted with TH ability to use the phone as a computer if I need.

So.

I'm going to hit send at 4. And watch that damned spider for the rest of th morning/night (?!!!).

Have a good one. :)

Brooksville, FL(Zone 9a)

Thanks so much for the info on the plan, will look into it. Our laptop and desktop don't like connecting to either my iPhone or his tablet, we keep taking it off auto as when my desktop tries to pull from his tablet it has a fit, then I can't get it back to my iPhone.

By the way did I say how much I HATE (I know very strong language here) the latest update from iPhone, that new operating system has just messed my phone to no end. Nothing works right on it.

I have great news, I filled out a quick app yesterday evening and received a call to go for a job interview in the morning at 11:00 so if anyone here is still awake, please sent a few extra prayers up for me. I'm just paying the Asthma coughing will stay at bay long enough to get through the interview. It is for a business manager at a nursing home, a job that I've held in the past and loved so much. It isn't that far from where the new place is, so that is good and it offers health benefits and of course the most important is a paycheck.

I'm excited and so want to get back into this area. I love being around senior citizens, even more so now, since I'm on my way to that age group...LOL

New study says poor sleep "habits" linked to "Alzheimer's-like" brain changes:

egads. Well thankfully they can't say lack of sleep CAUSES Alzheimer's. I am going to bad after this post. had to get a little snack.

Good luck Jan!!! Knock em dead! wait, maybe I should not say that- you're going to a senior facility…it's wonderful to hear that you enjoy that workplace.
we are All headed there tp that age group, sooner or later!

Milton, MA(Zone 6a)

I think poor sleep habits are linked to insatiable curiosity!

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

haha
at least insatiable curiosity means you always have something to look up or read about
I'm reading a book about the 1918 'spanish' flu epidemic, this by GIna Kolata, has previously read another.

Brooksville, FL(Zone 9a)

I like the insatiable curiosity as to reason for my in ability to sleep through at night.....

Well, I'm headed to bed again, now if the coughing will just quit down....

Keep reading yall and let us know the short read.

Jan

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

jan, how did the interview go? fingers crossed for you.

Milton, MA(Zone 6a)

I want you folks to know I am awake all night just not online. My thoughts are with you!!!!

Brooksville, FL(Zone 9a)

Well no second interview. So I'm still searching.

(Debra) Derby, KS(Zone 6a)

welp, now I am caught up on the past 6 days here, awake but getting ready for the bed, took my coctail of pills.. only alone time I have is between 1 and now, Joe is retired now so he stays up until 1 damn.. I get up at 7 am
I pretended I didn't hear my youngest back at home quietly getting into the cookie jar, both of us are insomiacs.. she on her computor in her room me and my lap top. your virgin mobile plan sounds nice, I would have to disrupt the Uverse family plan to do somerthing like that,, but u have to have a smart phone and I just have a 15 yr old flip phone.. all the kids have had at least 6 phones on the plan, all of them the latest whatever, Joe doesn't even have a cell phone, use the computor and even doesn't have a credit card or checking account. I can't retire until I pay off 30 k in debt of various sources, so I have to get that done. I am thinking maybe keep working and drawing my social security early, use that money to pay off the debt. What ya think? Plan? not Plan? PS: I love cats, Joe hates cats, all the kids have cats now that they are out.. Last summer in while Joe was in Buffalo, I heard meowing from somewhere, a cat was in the basement somehow, and Joanna thought I was going crazy but we found it. Then we let it stay a day or two while she put it on craigs list, and she is with a real nice family now. Of course the first thing we did was bathe it and feed it tuna.. She was cozy on the patio in one of my grow boxes, loved the grass, and was very limber..

Hello Debra dear. I hope you managed to fall asleep. My sleep pendulum is swinging the other way lately and I wake up on this side of 4 a.m. Have been training for the firefighter test (crazy, I know) and am plenty sleepy by (chagrin) about 8:30 or 9 p.m. also... the cats interrupt my sleep when I pass out. I'm getting to wonder if I ever liked cats? Had to think there for a moment. Yes. I did. But none of THOSE cats are with me anymore. So.

I know you wondered about your alone time with Joe around. Haha. Poor thing. At least he helps around th house. Sounds like a good egg but still. You need to work on YOUR sleep schedule. Maybe add some Kava Kava and/or Valerian root to your pill cocktail to catch some more winks. One less pill one more pill...

I wanted to post a picture of the circus tent we erected over our purple castor bean to protect it from frost on Saturday night. Interestingly, even my friends in New England have not had to do this fire drill yet. Our southeastern winter is predicted to come early and be colder. No s… Weather Channel.

The castor bean came thru with flying colors, only a few fronds that managed to pop out from under its protective cover were harmed. Not bad for a 10'+ tall and as wide crazy plant eating the front lawn all summer. We should have at least two weeks before I have to consider this drill again.

AND ladies and gentlemen of the night (and sometimes day) I have to take this opportunity to hissssssss as I have reserved the right in my initial post. Carrie, you are silly and your posts are entertaining but the thread has certain guidelines ...HA ha ha... unless you are posting from Taiwan you are not posting during Night Owl hours. You've even corrupted meadowyck.

I'm sorry to hear meadow that TH job fell thru. Thanks for keeping us informed. I know you won't give up, and those interviews are good practice. Apply for anything and everything.. sheer numbers will be on your side. :)

I'm hopeful that they reason you're not posting at night means you're enjoying some well deserved rest.

But as Debra points out, this is the only time/place Night Owls have to ourselves. Please help keep this thread that special place on DG.

Thanks, and have a Sun-shiney day.

Greensboro, NC(Zone 7b)

Good grief it's quiet. O well. I can go back to talking to myself if everyone has solved their upside down sleep habits.

Might not have had that last cup of coffee at 9p.m. with dinner, but I still had to go out and do my three miles.

Have heard of revised long term forecast for the southeast. Earlier forecasts called for colder an wetter conditions. Now it's the opposite.

I listened to a radio podcast and these radical weather changes (like last year's Sandy) are caused by a slower meandering jet stream. New studies are showing the diminution of arctic ice to be the cause for changes to the jet stream. Although scientists are "95% certain" about global climate change, this jet stream research is new, just within the last year, and will make modeling and forecasting very challenging.

Anderson, IN(Zone 6a)

Well the weather is interesting and the only modeling I do is with cereal boxes ,, well clay and medal(had to return to type in Metal) some ..
Took two cats to animal protection this week , yesterday as was . Could not keep that many ..
About all I am doing is still having a life (almost) trying to control my cholesterol ,and getting general chores done ,,

I did a couple of these while type, talking on the computer threads the other night , garden markers ,,

I WISH I could take cats to the shelter. Did I ever like cats? This house has four bedrooms and there is still nowhere to hide from them.

Th good news (?!) Is that we've been seeing signs of an opossum at our bird feeders during the day. Tonight I made him a plate (HA). I had just added some Apple slices (possums love apples!) And TH bottom of a canister of dried mealworms. Went to take it out and darned if he wasn't sitting right there!

Feeding possums is one of my favorite winter pastimes. I've raised them from babies working with wildlife rehab and think they are just the oddest sweetest things. Also so very interesting! Tempted to keep watch at the window but I already spooked him by being up in his face. I guess I'm done here. Make sure to get more sleep than not, Ju. Goodnight.

Clarksville, TN(Zone 7a)

Nothing cuter than a baby possum. Other than squirrels and birds, I haven't seen too much wildlife lately. Someone was riding loud ATVs and I think that spooked them into hiding for awhile. I may have to report those goofballs. Hopefully it's just a temporary thing.

Neighbors have gone somewhere for the weekend, I think, and left their sweet Boxer dog. I never know whether anyone is coming to feed her or not. So I give her some big doggie treats I keep on hand for her and for such emergencies. All we usually have is cat food. She throws that up sometimes. Guess I need to check her water tomorrow as well. Grrrrr... what is the matter with people?????

Anderson, IN(Zone 6a)

A few hours of sleep and """poof"" I'm up again , Amanda threw a spell at me !lol Don't know how she did it , but you know Lawyers and teachers and such .. Their all a bunch of witches ,,
Their words work like magic on those of us that have no favor of mind ..lol
Wonders why I'm not up late or early and ""poof"" here I am !!!lol It's a propaganda argument ,, really ..

Went to my sisters last week , and was looking at the Dead Possums along the road ..
Those and Raccoons are favorite car and truck targets around here ..

C_VILLE; the folks are that again , huh ? Remember that aggravating you , a few times in recent past ..

Delray Beach, FL(Zone 10a)

Hi, all.

I'm new here. I just found out about this thread. I am a notorious insomniac. I haven't had a decent night's sleep since puberty, 45 years ago. 2 or 3 hours a night and I'm done. In my opinion, sleep is vastly over-rated. My wife needs 8 hours/night to function. I got a bit over 2 hours sleep today. Very few people understand how I can function like that, but I do. To each his own, I guess.

Keep well. The world needs its night owls.

Sylvain.

good morning
I slept oddly well all last week, but here I am tonight. DH was out of town and I let the dog sleep in bed with me, and the latest book and some clean and dirty clothes... I don't know why i feel so awake, ; it feels like frost will finally hit here and I spent all day futsing with plants having fun getting them ready for inside, and also adding things to a new bed in the front yard.

Only saw a live possum once. I came home from work at ten pm and one was on the deck. So strange looking to me. I'm sure you can develop an appreciation tho.

nice to see you lourspolaire
