{{{hugs}}} for you and Cliffie.
NE Pets Forum #27
Thank you. I got the word that vet is offering surgery but I am caring for myself at home while DH and DS will decide. I have told them to dedcide what is right for Cliffie. Daughters are out of phone contact. We don't understand why they can't try to look down a scope to pull debris out his throat. The x-ray did show that he has a lot of material inside of his stomach. Every family has an unreal event like this at some time or other, no doubt.
When I was a kid I swallowed a 50 cent piece & they got it out of my throat. so hope Cliffie will be all right.
We are pleased to let the morning team work on Cliffie. He was monitored and given an IV overnight with just that idea in mind. If the clothing inside him stops moving again, then they may have to operate. I'm feeling a little better about his care. Last night the triage team kept passing him by for dogs that emerged as just fine because they thought he looked too healthy. They did say that after surgery to the abdomen dogs are running around again in just a few days.
Oh, no! Poor Cliffie......I'm hoping he'll get better without the surgery, but if it has to be done, hopefully it won't be too traumatic......
I just gave my credit card deposit and the go-ahead. I am not putting a price tag on love. Hoping it will be the simple surgery and not require resectioning of the intestines. The garments he ate are too long to pass without risk of fatality. If all goes well we get to see him again on Sunday so he can rest for two days before seeing us. Sounds like the structure of the intestine is just like in people with the upper intestine having a big bend at the duodenum and that is where they operate. Having just dealt with general anesthesia and surgery myself I feel we'll be convalescing together.
good luck to Cliffie.
Cliffie is out of surgery. they were able to empty all the trash out of him with two small incisions. Because he is a big dog he has a private run where he can walk around once he is awake enough. I don't have it yet, but there will be a webcam to observed him. He might come home again tomorrow, but stirct orders not to run for two weeks.
So glad he did well. I hope he can read the orders!
I hope that he leaves trash alone as well.
Everyone here will have to do a better job of keeping things away from Cliffie. We watched him twice on the webcam. This evening he is looking pretty alert but he doesn't come off the IV until he starts to eat solid food.
How long to the teethe?
She is such a pretty girl!
While I am home from work it may be possible to inspect everywhere in the house but if I drop something, I am not supposed to pick it up! We couldn't believe how much Cliffie swallowed. He shredded or consumed an entire clothes basket of DD1's clothing. Apparently it was the long pieces of stretchy fabric that he couldn't pass. I haven't learned the whereabouts of her spandex climbing gear yet. Since both she and I were away, the situation may have created a perfect storm when DD2 left the bedroom door open and then she left for Chicago. We figure the girls have learned that blame is not easily placed and to be grateful Cliffie is OK.
Vet will decide whether to discharge him at noon. They like to see a pet eat first, but we think he will not eat until he sees us and gets comfortable. They confirmed that last night he was mildly sedated.
Since he weighs over 100 lb, DH is building him a ramp to our SUV. He found plywood and indoor-outdoor carpeting. We can use it for other trips to the vet when need be. This guy would not be easy to lift.
Does spandex have a good 'eating' scent?
I don't know, but he definitley has liked her swimsuits which have elastic. They gave us the debris back. It was a swimsuit and underwear. Poor guy fell asleep as soon as he got home. He surely couldn't rest in the hospital.
So happy Cliffie is home! He probably missed the girls, so decided to chew their clothes......or just felt the urge to chomp! I think Nicki will be teething around 6 months....going to get Bitter Apple for the furniture.....
Wow! I just got caught up on this thread! A lot has been happening! Marilyn, imsaw Nicki's photos, and she is sooo pretty. Standards are so elegant and so smart. I have known many and really like them. Hank and I are very happy for you.
Rosemary, I hope Cliffie continues to heal well. Our girls ate everything outside that could hurt them when they were pups, and we had 2 very expensive hospital bills to show for it. Now that they are four, they don't show any interest in mushrooms and acorns anymore, thankfully! Now Bailey loves to dig and find stones that she then carries everywhere. I had put one of them on a table on our front porch, and the next thing I knew, it appeared in the dog bed on the floor. She doesn't appear to be interested in swallowing them - just walking around with them and digging them up. It's always something, isn't it?
Good thing, Louise!
Cliffie is starting to show his energy again. Tail is high and tonight when the young people left a pizza on the table it disappeared-- before he came to give us his hungry look.
Thanks, Louise.....I think Nicki is a doll....she's really very good for a pup.....maybe I'm just comparing her to the airedales' puppyhood, or maybe she hasn't cranked up her mischeviousness yet!
Awwwww.
Hi Memory......how are the kitties?
Most of them are good. Sometimes, that is the best I can hope for.
Memory, you can be happy knowing you are the best Mom you can be for them!
I do try.
I am still taking out clumps of fur from the evil TNR stray - who now is mostly nice. He must have been suffering from malnutrition as the fur is red and the clumps are hardly attached. Now that he has been eating here for almost a year, he is plump and his coat is shiny black. He has scars that will never grow fur again and a weeping patch that just doesn't heal. I have fingers crossed that I can get him to the Vet for another rabies shot in November. Maybe he has forgotten the trap....
Another stray is eating here and I think that he is blind in one eye. :(
Marilyn, Nicki is adorable! I love her curly shiny fur! If she is being a good girl, it has a lot to do with you! Enjoy her!
Memory, i think you are a saint! Those kitties are so lucky, and I will bet they feel it! 👼
.Memory, there's a place in heaven for you for taking care of those strays....Louise, Nicki has such a shiny coat, I hope she keeps it, but I think it's just a puppy coat....
I'm beat.....Poor Nicki was vomiting from 9-11 last night.....took her to the 24 hour hospital (almost an hour away). The vet couldn't find anything abnormal, she didn't vomit after that last time at 11, we didn't get home til 2am.....vet said to feed only chicken & rice today.
She must have found something to chew on--poor dear--don't eat what smells good.
Marilyn {{{hugs}}}
Poor pup and her mom! Hope you both got some sleep.
Nicki is doing better...she did vomit once yesterday, but not today......thanks for the support....her regular appt is tomorrow....should know more.....
Is anything missing?
LOL...no.....her teeth aren't that strong yet...just milk teeth.....she was fine at the vet's.....still underweight, but the vet said many poodles are....she did eat most of her breakfast & lunch today.....
There were 8 puppies in Nicki's Pre-K class....all purebreds, and only one double....yep, another black standard poodle, but a male.
I wonder if people think 'mutts' are smart & don't need training. A lot of folklore surrounds them.
There is the thought of hybrid vigor which is worth something if the comparison is to a badly overbred breed. Then people do overgeneralize from a kernel of truth.
My mixed breeds were both very smart & wonderful dogs.....I brought Suey for obedience training because she was 9 months old, too old for a puppy class......Robin was 17 months....he did well in both obedience classes....too bad he couldn't control his fear biting....he was a case of an airedale that had been bred without thought, or socialization, even though he was from a show kennel....he had aggression, seizures, thyroid, heart problems......
Ooh, Marilyn, I'm so relieved to read that Nicki is doing ok now. What an ordeal for you both. I haven't checked in in quite some time....having nerve damage trouble with my broken hand. It just doesn't want to end. Trying to write is way too painful, and even iPad typing triggers the burning in the hand. Ugh. Please tell me all this medical stuff will pass soon! I'm just fed up!
