7/17 What Just Happened to the Page? Anybody Else Seeing It?

Gainesville, FL(Zone 9a)

I have made my font tiny and the edge still cuts off

Sierra Foothills, CA(Zone 8a)

I changed my font to 10 point, in "preference" at the top of the DG banner. I can view all of the text in the box, at least here, anyway, but I am getting eyestrain trying to view this on a regular basis.

For those of you who like to go onto multiple threads, can you live with the tiny font? I do not have to do this on any other website. I am quite a bit older and have trouble seeing the smaller font.

I came here from GardenWeb, many years ago and have been a subscribing member ever since. GardenWeb was also bought by a large company and was no longer the same as it had been in the beginning, but they did not make us view such tiny fonts. A lot of changes, yes, but not this.

Quote from JoParrott :
evelyn, I did that and it helps, except that each time you read another forum is goes back to default.

Evelyn and Jo If you switch your view to "no style" on your Welcome page all of the forums you click on from there will be in "no style" If you don't swithch to "no style" until you are on a page you will have to do each page individually.

This is how it works for me with an old version of Firefox.
Also, unless my DG Preferences are set at 10 or 11 I will get cut of text in posts no matter how high or low my browser is set. I set my browser to what works best for me on all the other sites I visit and then just adjust the view for DG.
Here is another thread that gets cut off text like Ronnie posted
http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/1323341/

The thread below still cuts off 5th picture and puts it in a new row.
http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/1322897/
I know Terry said theey were working on this. It seems to me that if the post box was widened enough to fit 5 pics across it would fit all cut off text, too.
.

Algonquin, IL(Zone 5a)

coleup ~ I clicked on the 1st link you posted and didn't get any cut off text. I'm still using IE 8 because we have XP on our older computer and it doesn't support anything higher.

What browser do you use?

As far as the thumbnail pics...that's happening in all the threads, as far as I know, and it's because the text box is too narrow to accomodate all 5. It's a shame because it also means each post takes up more vertical space...so more up-down scrolling.

annapolis, MD(Zone 7b)

Evelyn it does get old. What browser do you use? I'm on dial up and have upgraded as much as I can but I use a very old version of Firefox as my browser on an outdated computer which has only recently become problematic as DG changes have not meshed well with my system and that of others with newer gear.

annapolis, MD(Zone 7b)

Nuts, that's my point, if the text box was wide enough to fit all 5 pics, it would also not cut off text, unless the "fix" is to make pictures smaller....

I linked to another thread in another forum because cut off text is not isolated to Northeast Forum or one or two threads.

I use Firefox 2.0, but if my DG Preferences are set at 12 or higher, I can reproduce cut of text in Ronnies and my links.

I have had no problems at all since I cleared my cache on Google Chrome. I have my font set to browsers default where it always has been. My monitor is a new one and large.

Suddenly today on some threads on Dave's Garden my text is now cut off. Oddly, I have only noticed it on the threads discussing the problems people are having with the changes including this thread.

Other threads on other forums are fine though I have only checked a few.

Kell, What you are showing is exactly the way it looks for me…This has only happened this AM…Haven't seen it before…But have heard others complaining about this very thing….And I'm only seeing it on this thread…All other threads are looking ok. So far!

Kell, what version of Chrome and do you have the browser set to 100% or lower on the zoom?

I just pulled up this thread on Chrome and had no cutoffs at all.

Rose Lodge, OR(Zone 8b)

I have the newest version of Chrome with zoom set at 100 but right edge still cut off. And just on this thread of the onez I visit. Puzzled!

I just adjusted the font down to 10 pts. Now none of the words get cut off, but I get eyestrain very quickly.

I am tired...now going to bed.

Clarksville, TN(Zone 7a)

Firefox looks good for me - even set at 14 pt font size. Chrome is cut off on the right with anything larger than an 11 pt font and that's just too small.

Overall, things are much better. At least on Firefox. I guess I'll go back to that browser for awhile.

Rosemont, ON(Zone 4a)

I am still not able to see complete sentences as they disappear out of view on the right side of the forum text boxes instead of wrapping around. I am using an HP Compaq 6910p laptop, running Windows XP Pro SP3. I don't know what version of Internet Explorer I have.

Memphis, TN

Here's a screen shot from a few minutes ago (Plant ID Forum). Sentences are cut off on the right. Just don't get it -- all that dead space on the left and right and the sentences are cut off in the middle.

I'm hoping this is being worked on as we speak and appreciate your help.

mid central, FL(Zone 9a)

most of the threads i look at are fine. i don't have a problem with the "dead space" since it's really always been there in one form or another.

on this particular thread and on some of my PF feedback pages, the words are cut off on the right and i can't scroll to see them.

using Chrome on a macbook.

June and Miss Mary

When my text is being cut off I have to set my Preferences (Tab at top of pages) to 10 no matter what my monitor resolution or my browser font size selection is set at.

Setting Daves Garden Preferences at ten will be too small a font size for some but I can usually "increase text size" once or twice by CTR+ or scrollling etc for that page.

Some members in the Northeast Forum are writing shorter lines in their posts to make sure every active member can read all posts while we all wait for more tweeks to our new look!

here is how this post would look 'shortened'

Also, lots of white space is I believe a separate issue from cut off text and diminishing left hand margins will not automatically make our posting text area any larger as the size of that area was chosen to best fit most screens including all the mobile phones and pads, etc.

Terry please correct me if I have mispoken on this.

Memphis, TN

I just set my font size to 10. As you said, it's way too small....but it is still cut off on the right side at the same point as it was before.

annapolis, MD(Zone 7b)

So sorry to hear that Miss Mary. Is it other forums. too?
Well, that's all the suggestions I have and defer to Terry and more tech savy members.

Hope this heat wave breaks soon and we can all be safely outside in our gardens. Also hope the stressed out plants and trees recover nicely.

Love the Plant ID forum. Some people are so good at ID s!

IE8. I am working on my updates "as we speak"....WinVista Home Premium (HA!)

Gainesville, FL(Zone 9a)

My font is at 10 also, very small and still the threads are cut off. All the talk about browsers and servers and that stuff, I dont understand at all, and I shouldnt have to, to use the web site. The post office could have done a better job of changing something. Terry has been very nice in trying to explain, but its like trying to explain to someone why they should try to put out a fire with a straw broom, it makes no sense. Its hard to wrap you mind around how someone could have made this big of a mess out of something. Very discouraging after all these years.
Headed over to ATP with all my daylily friends. Will check back next month. Over and out.

Can you give me a link to that thread, or let me know which thread it is? (Is it just that thread or others?) Screen shots help, but we also need to be able to get to the thread itself for testing purposes. Also, if you can tell me which browser you're using and your screen resolution.
.
I know that may sound like a lot of technical details for people to know. But everyone's setup is slightly unique, and these problems are starting to focus in on one or two issues and fewer variables - that's a good thing, if we can identify the common denominators.

And knowing your screen size, operating system, your browser and version, and your screen resolution and settings is pretty basic stuff that you need to know anytime you need to troubleshoot anything (on your own or with online or over-the-phone support.)

Every other website that I visit works fine on my laptop and with the software that I'm running. Google, all the news sites, weather forecast sites, airline sites, hotel booking sites, financial sites, local municipality, federal and provincial government, etc. are all fine. It's ONLY Dave's Garden that is giving me problems. I'm not changing settings or software on my laptop. Please will the programmers to get their act together and fix the problems at DG? Please reply to me on D-mail, as I can't see whole sentences in the forums and the bits I can see don't make sense.

Problem with the text cut off on the right side.

Windows 7 Home Premium
PC
Chrome 28.0.1500.72m (Chrome up to date)
Samsung 27 inch monitor
1920 X 1080
Font set to 12 on Dave's Garden

Cleared cache and so forth today but that
didn't help.

Vashur I've reset your DG font to default to your browser's settings. If the problem continues, please identify the specific threads where you're having the problem.

Terry, here's the link:

http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/1326098/

I'm using Chrome, Windows 7 with browser default settings for font size. How do I determine my screen res?

I picked through a few other forums and threads at random and didn't see any cut-off text except in the one I mentioned and in this one. All the text is cut off on the right in this thread.

Thanks.

Wichita, KS(Zone 6b)

This thread is one of those that the right side is chopped off.
I was originally using the browser default but changed it to the
12 point since that was what you were saying it should be.

Oceanside, CA(Zone 10a)

Awe :( I thought if I left for a few days it would have been fixed. Bummer. Still very wonky. Will check back in next week.

Memphis, TN

I do like the nice font and grid line size on the home page! Yippee!

Alexandria, IN(Zone 6a)

Why is the right side of threads [words]missing on only some of the threads?

Jacksonville, FL(Zone 9a)

Good question, Indy….This is the only thread that I'm seeing that is cut off on the right. All others are OK…Thank goodness!

So far!

Rose Lodge, OR(Zone 8b)

I just randomly checked a dozen threadz & all of them were fine for me. Just this one is wonky. So .... I can live with that.

(Ronnie), PA(Zone 6b)

If I bump up my font from 10 to 11 some of the threads get wacky. I don't like the small font but I can read the post. I clicked on MissMary's link and even at 10 it's cut off.

Charlotte, NC(Zone 7b)

Words on the right edge are cut off everywhere I go. Makes it hard to follow posts.

Sierra Foothills, CA(Zone 8a)

After I changed the font size to 10p in DG"Preferences" at the top of the page, all the text "stays in the box", though it is very hard to read the smaller font.

An alternate way of viewing the page is go to"view" on your computer at the top (if you have that option), then then click on "STYLE" and then change your view to "NO STYLE". Then the text will appear across the screen, as I "think it should". Yes, it would be a good default for DG.

This is only a temporary fix as when you go to the next page on DG it will revert to whatever you had before. If you monitor several different areas of the website, it can get tiresome.

(Pam) Warren, CT(Zone 5b)

I went back to the 11 point font. This is the only thread I've been to so far that crowds the end of the right-hand line, and it's far easier to read everywhere else without adjustments.

Murfreesboro, TN(Zone 7a)

Pam, actually the best thing to do is to set it to default to your browser's preferences, and then set your browser at whatever level of zoom feels comfortable to you. The threads that are cutting off should be fixed ASAP.

Algonquin, IL(Zone 5a)

Terry, did you even take a single minute off this weekend?

(Pam) Warren, CT(Zone 5b)

I'm using the iPad mini exclusively. As far as I know, the only adjustment I can make is in DG Prefernces, and pinch or expand the screen as needed. With 11 point, I am comfortable as is most of the time.

But thanks for the suggestion, and for being so attentive to all of us.

Pam
