7/17 What Just Happened to the Page? Anybody Else Seeing It?

(Pam) Warren, CT(Zone 5b)

OK, I went back to preferences and changed my font size from 15 to 12 point. This is what I have now, much better. Thanks!

Barb, it looks like your DG preferences have a font setting of 18. Since that will most likely affect the left-hand column, I recommend you reduce it to 10 or 12 points, then use your browser to adjust the size if you need to enlarge the text for readability.

Here's what I'm seeing....Pic#1

Just throwing out a more fuller, centered design idea.....Pic#2 There's no need for the "follow DG" to form it's own padding all the way down, while making the rest of the forum smaller and situated to the right. jmo.

Agreed, except that for non-subscribers, I believe there are ads appearing on the left-hand side. I'd like to say we could banish them altogether, but they do help pay the bills and keep the site accessible to those who choose to not subscribe.

And that's how it should appear, rather than both columns being the same width.

Enterprise, AL(Zone 8b)

That's as wide as it gets?

Murfreesboro, TN(Zone 7a)

Yep.

Enterprise, AL(Zone 8b)

I know the tech team is working on this and I appreciate it.

But - are you really telling me that almost half of the horizontal viewing on my monitor is going to be taken up by empty space?

There is 7 inches of space on the left side of the "forum". And the scrolling back and forth is the new norm of the site?

Hi Terry,

So we have that wasted space on the left because of freeloaders? kidding of course :) But there's got to be a better way, right? Subscribers shouldn't have 270+ pixels of vacancy on a tiny 15" screen(much more on a 27"), plus add in the 170+ pixels from the grey table/padding on each side....that seems like a lot of wasted space. I almost want to turn the ads back on, just so I don't feel lopsided while reading :)

The web designers should be able to differenciate between subscribers and non-subscribers with a code/script. Meaning, subscribers (no left void, centered and filled) and non-subscribers (left side has ads). I guess that depends on how much DG wants to spend on coding/scripting/designing.

I was good with everything until tonight. Page is shifted to the right and cut off. Home page is fine as is the font. Cleared cache and restarted twice and no change. Running on windows 7 and IE 10.

mid central, FL(Zone 9a)

mine is messed up using chrome. i'll check safari.

just as bad with safari. big fat boxes with empty space. i don't normally complain but looking at a forum page gives me a headache....individual threads are a little easier on the eye but it's all bad.

It's shifted right, no matter what you do at this point. No browser or cleaning will fix it.

I think they know it's wonky and will take some time to fix.

My solution is typing no more than
a few word before changing
line, at least for DG friend on
threads checking up with each
other it's readable.

You all sound very computer
knowledgeable, wouldn't dare
play with settings so no value
someone telling me to play
with pixels

It's much better. The font size is readable, but you're wasting so much space on the screen. I have to agree with someone above that a narrower column is easier to read than a wide one, but I'd still like to see the message column a bit wider than it is. And does the area at the left with the choices of places to "Follow" DG really have to be as wide as it is?

Rose Lodge, OR(Zone 8b)

I just discovered something weird on Chrome that might help some of you with the scrolling problem. If you click+hold on the scroll bar, move it slightly & then move your cursor up onto the page (still click+holding) ... the scroll bar stayz activated & you can then scroll up, down & sidewayz by moving the mouse. Easier 4 more than clicking on that teensy bar.

Of course, once you click to enter text the scroll bar deactivates but still. Could be helpful while reading a thread.

Rose Lodge, OR(Zone 8b)

Betty, don't be afraid to adjust settingz. There is almost always a "Reset to default" option if you mess something up.

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

My pages look more normal, but the white isn't quite centered on the page like it was before so if there's anything hanging out there in the "margin" on the right side of the message, I have to scroll.

Lucketts, VA(Zone 7a)

Well, its better, but there is still a WIDE blank margin on the left and only 4 photos fit on one line in the content column. This site is getting to be an endless hassle and irritation, no longer a pleasant respite it once was.

Rose Lodge, OR(Zone 8b)

Oh c'mon ... it's not THAT bad.
At times, kind of entertaining, even.

Enterprise, AL(Zone 8b)

This reminds me of watching a wide screen movie on my old TV, with four inches of black at the top and bottom and about three inches of movie in the center! Everyone was talking about how great wide screen was, I thought it was the worst thing ever!

Text is easy to read now, great!
There is a new problem, the width of the boxes are so narrow that in order to read the posts the boxes are long and narrow causing alot of scrolling so it is very uncomfortable visually to read more then a short post.

Please reduce the empty space on at least one side of the post area.

(Linda Kay) Amarill, TX(Zone 7a)

Terry, this is a screen shot of what I get on most of the threads, not all of them. Words are cut off the right side, and I can not scroll to see them...

Looks like the user name, location , and date and time box should be stacked in a wide box over the message box. That would provide a much wider posting area.

(Ronnie), PA(Zone 6b)

This thread is now long and narrow but all the others are still cut off.

(Barb) Manchester, NH(Zone 5a)

I went to preferences and set my font size to 12 and now I see all of the posts. Thank you Terry....

(Linda Kay) Amarill, TX(Zone 7a)

Barb, thanks for the tip, that works for me too! The font is small and hard to read, but at least I can see all the text now!

mid central, FL(Zone 9a)

i went in to my DG preferences and changed to browser default on the font settings. that helped immensely. i still have the wide, blank margins but it's much, much better and easier on my eyes.

wanted to add that the home page is completely normal. it's only when i click on a forum and then a thread that i see the dead space.

I've been playing around a little with the font size in Prefernces. I use the iPad mini almost exclusively, the results are the same on the iPhone, I checked.

By setting the point size at 11, when I open a thread I can expand just enough to see who's posting and the comments, and the type is easy to read. At 10, the home page and forum lists are too small. At 12 it's all fine, but at 11 the box containing the actual post is a little wider, so when I expand it the proportions look right to me.

If nothing else changes, I'm comfortable with this...

I know this is a nightmare for the admins, thanks for staying with us!

I'm checking your preferences, and the common denominator among almost everyone who is experiencing cut-off text or the text area "feels" very narrow is your DG font setting. We are planning to phase out the font settings because there are better/easier ways to adjust how any website (including DG) appears on your screen. I don't yet have a date when this feature will take its last curtain-call, but when I do, I will let you know.

In the meantime, I encourage everyone to set your DG font settings to 11 or 12 point, which will reduce the width of the left-hand column in the forums (and leave more room for the right-hand column.)

For those of you who do not have significant eyesight issues but you feel the text area is too small and we're wasting space with this smaller column size, I urge you to approach the layout with an open mind, and give yourself some time to adjust to it. I think you'll find that having a smaller text area makes for easier reading.

I hadn't realized it, but for a very long time, I would keep my window shrunk down to about half my screen. The text area was about the same size as we have now. I had never really thought about why I did it, but the long lines of text are hard to read - it would be like trying to read a book where the text goes across both pages.

(And for the record, I didn't ask them to change the text area size with the new layout, but when I saw the new prototype, I instinctively gravitated to it.)

For those of you who are on a laptop or desktop and are ramping up your font to a very large size please review your resolution size on your monitor screen ( and make sure you haven't inadvertantly tweaked that resolution below what is recommended.

The second piece of advice is to make sure your browser isn't zoomed "out."

Once you've made sure those issues aren't fighting against one another, you can use the browser's zoom to make the text appear bigger.

I'm going to assume that tablet and smart-phone users already know how to enlarge or reduce their text to a size that is comfortable for them, and that you already deal daily with the fact that not every website renders well on mobile devices.

Most devices (and websites) are becoming more portable and smaller, so website text is becoming more compressed. More and more users are moving to tablets and smart phones to access the internet and those with sight issues are fighting a trend that is much bigger than one website.

We are continuing to fine-tune things (and having the fifth thumbnail picture "wrap" to the next line is on my list of issues to address next.)

SE Houston (Hobby), TX(Zone 9a)

My home page is perfect, however, the forum pages are getting worse. I have even more text covered up on the right hand side, and an even wider left side margin...

Richland, WA(Zone 7b)

I agree-GG- I have done all of the suggestions but still see that terrible dead space on the left that seems to be devoted to the Follow facebook, etc. I may be leaving along with many others if this keeps up.

Agree, why is a quarter of the page width devoted to 3 buttons? What are the priorities here?

SE Houston (Hobby), TX(Zone 9a)

Jo,

Please don't talk about leaving. They're working as hard and as fast as they can to fix these issues.

I would miss you, and a lot of others, tremendously if you left...
