They love water, did I mention my leaves can get 10'/12' in length? Chuckle. All winter. Freeze will kill leaves back to bulb like an onion, ignore til spring. Gave mine blood meal and onion fertilizer.

Magnolia, TX(Zone 9a)

Scuse me, can give em blood meal, but I meant bone meal.

Ok, what is this one? Again one of y'all gave it to me.

Looks like Crinum to me Joy but I did not give it to you.

Baytown, TX(Zone 9b)

Looks like Crinum to me also

Magnolia, TX(Zone 9a)

Not a crinum. airplane or spider plant.

(Joy) Hempstead, TX(Zone 8b)

Not an airplane. It was a bulb sort of thing. I can spot airplanes a mile away.LOL Guess I can wait for a bloom

(Joy) Hempstead, TX(Zone 8b)

Now for something completely different. Went to my favorite goodwill store and found some glass ware. I have never done any of these garden art things before but here are my two attempts. The watermelon one was the most expensive, costing $10 for the two pieces. My cut glass feeder/bath cost $4.50 and can be turned either way. It will be a gift if y'all think it is worthy.

I'm SO trying to put a bird bath in my yard!!! Those are GREAT!!!

(Linda Kay) Amarill, TX(Zone 7a)

Joy, those are wonderful! Wish we had a thrift shop to go to?

(Joy) Hempstead, TX(Zone 8b)

Thanks, I make a point to stop in the College Station goodwill store at least once a month. Sometimes I get $6 jeans, sometimes shirts, never know what will be there. It is a good one probably because of the college town. I'm doing a swap that requires a little more thought than some so I went there for ideas. Just missed a decoupaged foot locker that sold for $7. Would have been perfect for the bunkhouse.

SE Houston (Hobby), TX(Zone 9a)

Joy,
How did you put them together to make the birdbaths? I have a recycle shop right up the street. Could make a lunchtime run!

Daughter has a pink Mexican ruellia- its the tall one abt 2.5'...

Please don't get me started on Goodwill. I love them. My kids went on a very fancy 2 week cruise to Alaska with my parents a few years ago.75% of the clothes I brought were from Goodwill and I got tons of complements. I got a LLBean parka, with the tags still on it, for under 10.00

(Joy) Hempstead, TX(Zone 8b)

when I'm choosing pieces, I practice stacking them right there in the store to see what fits well and what might not work. The bottoms of some bowls for platters have ridges to make gluing them together difficult.it's also about aesthetics to me. I need to see what it looks like to get an idea if it will work. The crystal feeder or bird bath is a bud vase that has ridges on the top, they happened to fit into the ridges at the bottom of the bowl which made gluing them together much more secure.
I used JB Weld epoxy that dries clear. They say you can also use silicon sealant but the epoxy sets in five minutes.

Kitt, that is the pink one I want. Could she save me some seed?

(Joy) Hempstead, TX(Zone 8b)

Happy Birthday Linda Kay. Hope it is a great one!

Thanks for the Birthday wishes. Spending a few days at Padre Island in Corpus Christie, headed home in the morning.

(Joy) Hempstead, TX(Zone 8b)

WooHoo! Thanks.

Magnolia, TX(Zone 9a)

Chuckle, not sure if who is getting the better bargain... Happy Birhtday LK...

Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

Ok, I also got some amaryllis/crinum/whatevers the time before last. i think from Kitt? They were in a bag of sh*t. Oh, I mean manoooor :) I must need to go to bed.
anyway, I have them planted in my front bed with my amaryllis and they look nice but haven't flowered since I got them. I'm hoping next year. My amaryllis flower around Easter. When do these flower? One or two have reddish leaves and the others look like Joy's. I remember you came to Kitt's trunk when she gave them out and got some, so they are the same as mine. Gee, I remembered something. Let me write that down in my diary (before I forget...).
Joy, I love your yard art! I have been spending the last several days on Ebay looking at old china. I especially love the handpainted flowered plates, and things like Limoges, Bavarian china, some chintz looking ones. I have several pieces I wanted to look up and see if there are others out there. I hope I don't actually "win" all that stuff I bid on today. HAHAHA!
And HB, LK!
Nighty night! Janet

Red leafed amaryllis is a scented pink- named Sangria. Mine generally bloom twice a year, but water it well, it's growing roots this year.. It is the one that has a neck above the bulb at a full 18-20" wide in several years. The other bloomed this year, not sure where I put that pic - white with candy pink stripes...by the way, I threw onion fertilizer at em this year too....This was a full 5' tall when it bloomed.

Kit that is a Crinum and a beautiful one. I would love to have one if you ever have any to trade. http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/514/

It is way beautiful :)

Magnolia, TX(Zone 9a)

A pained expression here -I have 6 types. 7 now that I went and got those 2 red crinums. The Sangria has for a backdrop what i believe to be Ellen Bousanquets, Rose colored trumpets most years, and stressed out pink on bad years. There is a native one, I will check for pix, and 3 I need to dig that are white in a spider lily floret....I have NO problem getting you more, IF I can get a trakhoe to dig em up...that white with pink stripes is so far the only one that is a 'walking crinum' -stalk falls over and thousands are seeded after flowering.I wont trade, I donate, chuckle.

Baytown, TX(Zone 9b)

lol on donating:) I have dug up some of the native ones but the pink strip is only on the outside and not inside the bloom. There are 100's of them around here to dig. I bought a solid pink one on ebay years ago but bloomed this year and is the native one :( Nothing I can do now. They are beautiful but same one is around here on old homesteads. It was suppose to be this one http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/103907/ . Everytime I think I can own one of every color of something I really like I find out there are so many I I give up. I will try to collect some of them any way as I cleaned out a bed for mostly crinums as they do well there and easy to keep weeds out.

(Linda Kay) Amarill, TX(Zone 7a)

Does anyone have any datura's, devil trumpets? Any color.

Baytown, TX(Zone 9b)

I have some seeds I am going to plant will let you know how it goes.

(Linda Kay) Amarill, TX(Zone 7a)

Thanks so much!

(Joy) Hempstead, TX(Zone 8b)

I am back with a new update on my fun projects, Gymgirl this is for you.
I stopped by my favorite Goodwill store and bought some vases, then went to Hobby Lobby and bought some glass knobs. Glued them together with some Locktite epoxy and voila, cloches. I need to get some little felt feet for the bottoms so there is a tiny air space.

Joy,
Those look great! What 'cha gonna cover with them?

If you have a lot of seedlings to cover, might I suggest you head to your nearest fabric store and purchase a couple yards of tulle (think "bridal veil") fabric? It is air, water, and light permeable, and will act as a floating row cover over your tender seedlings.

A group of us purchased it to keep Squash Moths from laying eggs on the squash plants. The rationale is that, if the moth can't reach the stems, she can't lay eggs on them.

Folks are reporting increased harvests with little to no Squash Vine Borer issues.

LMK.

I got this off Lowes clearance rack. I will divide everything and some will definitely find a home under the glass. I am thinking of trades in our fall RU or maybe door prizes.

Those will look very nice!

Livingston, TX(Zone 8b)

I can't wait for the next RU. I'm hoping to be there. Joy I love the pearl plant in that. Anyone know when that will be?

(Joy) Hempstead, TX(Zone 8b)

We need to look at some dates. Our sheepdog trial won't be till November, I do have a judging assignment in late October, and I need to decide if I'm going to nationals which would tie up the 12 & 13. What about the first weekend in October? Or the third?

SE Houston (Hobby), TX(Zone 9a)

I have an annual Fall Family BBQ the 1st weekend in October, so the 3rd weekend (October 19th) gets my vote!

Linda

Livingston, TX(Zone 8b)

Either one of those would work for me. Just let me know when, where and what to bring...lol Can't wait to meet you all in person.
