LOL!

Joy? That oregano is making a liar out of me. It went from flat to 18" hi eith you guys gully washers- speaking of which I floated thru your area last night about midnight. Have you washed totally away overnight?

SE Houston (Hobby), TX(Zone 9a)

I'm still here!

Lewisville, MN(Zone 4a)

Hey, I'll bring one of them from Minnesota.

Magnolia, TX(Zone 9a)

I heard on my way down the rains and winds are making sure all the plants are rooted or pulled, chuckl

Houston Heights, TX(Zone 9a)

Im still here but last night the cat had a real bad hair day! He sat in my lap and finally licked himself dry after getting caught out in it. I really appreciated the rain but my nasturtiums will never be the same. They were up about 5 feet on a trellis and today I had to give a hair cut because they were so tattered.

(Joy) Hempstead, TX(Zone 8b)

We didn't get as much rain as y'all did, lots of pyrotechnics, and bouts of wind. My ground soaked it up. All the plants I have been planting from the RU really perked up. South of us about 15 miles had hail.

How's the shoulder Joy? Hope it's improving fast.

(Joy) Hempstead, TX(Zone 8b)

We are on the road to Braeshear, trial in the morning, then on to Kentucky for the Bluegrass Classic. Went to orthopedist on Friday and he is ready for me to start PT. of course that has to wait till I get back. Took the pads off my sling and told me that the type of pain I am feeling is good pain. Really?
Actually feel pretty good,

Joy

Magnolia, TX(Zone 9a)

I think that just means you can still FEEL the pain, being the good part.

Magnolia, TX(Zone 9a)

Ummm, reports are 30* in Indiana tonite, you did take jackets?

Houston Heights, TX(Zone 9a)

Sounds good, Joy. Take care of it and dont get too rambunctious. If a Ewe comes by, just let someone else catch her this time! Glad to hear you're on track to well.

(Linda Kay) Amarill, TX(Zone 7a)

Glad to hear your arm is healing.

(Carey) Austin, TX(Zone 8b)

Good pain? Is that the thing those crazy people that go to the gym call it?

I'll stick with Yoga. It hasn't hurt me yet! :)

(Linda Kay) Amarill, TX(Zone 7a)

Carey, how did you do on your finals?

(Carey) Austin, TX(Zone 8b)

LK, my finals were not so bad - the research paper was an embarrassment, however! :)

(Linda Kay) Amarill, TX(Zone 7a)

Glad they were easy for you!

Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

Just thought I would add a big THANK YOU to Joy for being our hostess and her most kind hubby, and to everyone who came and so generously shared plants. It was great to see everyone and meet some new peeps! I brought my camera but only took a few pics of the greeting committee :) All the plants I received have survived with the possible exception of the mint and maybe the Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow--but I'm not giving up on them yet! (I know--how can anyone kill mint?...) Can't wait for fall and to see LINDA again! Maybe I'll throw a swim party just so we can play together before fall!
Janet
Dang, I can't find the pics :( Anyway, they were of the horses/donkeys/whatevers at the front of Joy's gate (neighbor's animals). therefore, I will show you the blooming aloe I received as my door prize!

That's a cool trick that plant is doing, Janet! Very nice!

(Carey) Austin, TX(Zone 8b)

Marty - does that mean the ratibida actually survived this year??? I hope it did!

And you had it exactly right. THANK YOU JOY!!! You are truly the hostess with the mostest! (I hope you and the Mr enjoyed your pancakes!)

(Joy) Hempstead, TX(Zone 8b)

Hey, you guys make it easy and fun. So far all my plants are still alive, I just planted everything In the front beds since I have a "broke" wing and was going to be gone for 10 days to KY. Made it easy for Dave to water by using soaker hoses and everything is doing great. Just got back yesterday and will take some pictures tomorrow. Took a few before I left.
Can't wait till we do this again in the fall.

I have a question, do peonies do well here? Never thought much about them till I saw several at the Kentucky Horse Park and now I think I am a fan. Also got my fill of bearded irises. Wow, the whole city of Lexington uses them. Gorgeous.

Joy, unfortunately the peonies (for the most part) don't get the cold hours they need here in Texas. There are a few hardier varieties that can handle our heat, but they're pretty rare. :( Can't remember who it is, but one of the guys in Dallas has narrowed it down. I love the peonies - I also miss the lilacs first thing in the spring. My grandmother had the most beautiful plants.

(Linda Kay) Amarill, TX(Zone 7a)

Happy Birthday Carey! Hope you have a great day!

Happy Birthday Carey! Hope you have a great day!
Joy what about camelia's? I know they are not peony's but they are beautiful. My dad had peony's in Penna when I was growing up...The Japanese bean beatles wreaked havoc on them :(

Joy I can't wait till fall. My DGD had a blast. I told her we would bring her sister next time and she said "NO" rotflol

Magnolia, TX(Zone 9a)

Happy birthday carey. The camellias make huge trees over in memory lapse here- Florida- east of Pensacola. and 2 of my 3 grandkids were born there. I wanted one of those CAMELLIA trees BAD! TALLAHASSE! remember now

(Carey) Austin, TX(Zone 8b)

Thank you for the birthday wishes! :)

Have a Holly Hunter Happy Birthday!!!

Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

We stayed at a B&B around Durango, CO and they grow rows and rows of flowers including peonies. I just LOVE them! They're like big cabbage roses. Wish we could grow them here but way too hot. Thanks for sharing the pics, Joy :)

SE Houston (Hobby), TX(Zone 9a)

Go with Camelias.

Only problem is they tend to look ragged if you aren't diligent with the deadheading. Otherwise, a great substitute for that "peony" look.

(Joy) Hempstead, TX(Zone 8b)

Hmmm, I don't think I have ever noticed any at a nursery or driving around. I will have to see if I can find one.

(Carey) Austin, TX(Zone 8b)

Joy, you can usually find Camellias at Home Depot/Lowes if the nurseries don't carry them.

(Joy) Hempstead, TX(Zone 8b)

Are they hosts? Or pest ridden?

Baytown, TX(Zone 9b)

I have never seen one that didn't look healthy so I can't answer that one. I stopped at a small nursery here and they were beautiful. I do know they do not like full sun so maybe morning sun and afternoon shade. If anyone likes orange you would love my (Fruitless) Pomegranate. It is blooming now and is to die for. I am going to try some cuttings soon and see if they root. Here is the link to one of my pictures....That is one bloom with all those petals. It is fuller than a carnation. LMK what you all think of it.

I also have an Evergreen Wisteria that is to die for. Once it starts blooming it blooms spring to fall. You can cut it way back in the spring and it will still bloom last spring to fall. I absolutely love this plant. It is not invasive like the Chinese Wisteria or the other ones. Mine gets sun until around 2-3 o'clock and could possibly take more.

I took cuttings and put them in water over a week ago and so far they have not wilted. With any luck I will have them in the fall. :)

My evergreen wisteria has tons of buds, can't wait for it to start.

For those who were trying to help me figure out the volunteer in my front bed (pokeweed was the favorite idea), it has very small buds forming in a couple nodes where stem attaches to trunk. Looks to be a bloom shaped like the wisteria but it is tiny now. I will get some pics as it develops.
My cosmos are lovely, they really like it here. And the red salvia is blooming nonstop.

Has anyone gotten the mystery beans growing? I have two planted by my front steps and they are almost tall enough to start climbing the handrail.

(Linda Kay) Amarill, TX(Zone 7a)

Sandy, both of those plants are beautiful. Good luck rooting them!

Baytown, TX(Zone 9b)

Thanks Linda. I hope to have some to trade in the fall :)

Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

Joy, I forgot I planted those HUGE beans/seeds in a pot! One came up and is starting to grow well. Not sure where I'll put it yet. Do you know how big it gets?
When I got home from the roundup, it took me a while to get to all the plants that followed me home and the big seeds were sitting in water for quite a while. I think it did them well, since at least one has come up. Can't wait to see the blooms. Do you have any pictures of it??
Does anyone know who gave me a plant that makes a bundle/grouping of bright orange, single petal flowers, like a small daisy? The leaves are kind of tough, leathery but not thick and some have a reddish cast to them (not sure if this is a good thing!).
this is a pic of my very first Angel Trumpet! this plant had been moved 3 times and I finally found a place that it likes :) And I have no idea why the pictures come out sideways even though I've changed them in my file??!!

Bariolio, look up scarlet pimpernel to see if that is the weed that you have. the flowers are tiny, it looks like a ground cover. Most consider it weedy. It is however, ephemeral and goes away when it gets hot and returns next spring. I have it so it might have been in one of my pots.

(Linda Kay) Amarill, TX(Zone 7a)

Love that angel trumpet bloom! Congrats on your first bloom! Make sure you fertilize it at least once a week.
