Yes or it will get long and leggy.

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Got my caladiums about ten days ago. Figured it was not worth starting at that point.

Today received a JM and hydrangea from Rarefind. Have not ordered much this year. Two hydrangeas co ing from Hydrangeas Plus.

I came to this thread to announce the Bluestone sale, but Roses beat me to it. I have too much in my cart now, have to do a serious edit, even at 1/2 price.

Have to say that this year my garden is disproving many commonly held beliefs. As you know, the past two years I could not really do much because of my knee and then my cut hand last year. Consequently, I did not do a number of things I would normally do. Did not prune ANY clems. Did not fertilize anything other than annuals. And last fall, for the first time, I did not even do a fall cleanup.

On the clems - they appear to be better than ever - huge number of buds, lots of bushy growth, etc. Spring flowering plants bloomed as well or better than any other year. As for the leaves, they ended up staying only in the beds, which is fine with me. It has helped keep weeds down and will, of course, provide organic matter as they decay. The look does not bother me, though I know some (like Bill ^_^) would hyperventilate! As everything fills out, I soon will not see most of it. Of course it helps my garden has reached a nice maturity. Also helps that I really only have a few large deciduous trees.

I have always felt, and stated a number of times, that I believe we do too much in our gardens and should allow nature to do what she does best.

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

I believe you have another hand and knee, they should have been used!:)

have not weeded yet this year. although it is annoying - will weed each bed when I mulch.

Salem Cnty, NJ(Zone 7b)

Pffftttt. Glad I didn't have any liquid in my mouth when I read that first line, wha.

The one bed I didn't tidy up yet looks better now that things are growing up covering the yuckiness. However, I DO need to get rid of the grass that has invaded.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Grass is one of the toughest 'weeds' to get rid of!

central, NJ(Zone 6b)

So true Victor....instead of trying to fight nature we need to enjoy it

Quoting:
"I believe you have another hand and knee, they should have been used!"

ROTFL!!!

S of Lake Ontario, NY(Zone 6a)

I agree Victor, esp about pruning Clems. We were going to replace our fence last year, so I didn't do much to the garden, figured I'd wait until after the fence work. Well, I hope we get it replaced this year, another waiting game, but I haven't done much yet this year. The Clems mostly because they grew while I wasn't looking, so I didn't get to them.

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

I decided this year I wouldnt prune clems. Thanks Victor that confirms it.

Thomaston, CT

I didn't prune my clems either & they look great....Omoshiro has started to bloom....

Its the first one here.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Very pretty!

This is the first year I have ever had any problem with Physocarpus Coppertina - one of my faves. Lots of mildew this year!

Thomaston, CT

Wow...surprising.....it's been so dry here....

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Yes - I have had much wetter springs - like two years ago. Weird.

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

wonder why Victor.. mine is fabby this year

Salem Cnty, NJ(Zone 7b)

Mine, too. I mean fabby not mildewy

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

mildew is probably spores from decomposing leaves that were not cleaned out last fall.

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

too invasive?

central, NJ(Zone 6b)

YIKES!

Bluestone shipped their replacement order on Friday, between that and all I got at the swap yesterday I am going to be planting up a storm this week

Norridgewock, ME(Zone 5a)

I've been so busy putting in new beds around the deck expansion that we did last year, I've hardly had time to breathe. But I had to mention a neat Pieris japonica I got last week, called Flaming Silver. I really love the color of the new spring growth.

It has been fun "lurking" on the boards in the evening, even if I didn't participate much.
