Salem Cnty, NJ(Zone 7b)

Hehehehe.

Southeastern, NH(Zone 5b)

I picked up some stuff this week. I swore I'd only get stuff if it was on my list but of course some impulse buys took me over. lol So now I searched one and I'm scared to plant it after seeing some warnings of it being invasive in the PF... So anyone here grow it? Sweet Woodruff? The tolerates dry shade and wonderful scent sold me.

Lexington, MA(Zone 6a)

If it's any comfort to know, Meredith, I never have an invasion of the stuff because we keep our garden pretty dry all the time. Sure cure for sweet woodruff invasions.

Southeastern, NH(Zone 5b)

That is good to know :)

central, NJ(Zone 6b)

Mine hasn't spread much either

central, NJ(Zone 6b)

I was bad I couldn't resist the 30% off coupon from Santa Rosa, but I did buy some herbs too so I think that fits in with just concentrating on my veggie garden
Lewisia longipetala Little Peach
Delosperma Fire Spinner
Thymus praecox Coccineus
Cilantro 'Calypso'
Parsley 'Titan' (had to buy this cause it's named after our company, LOL)

oh, and this def counts as a veggie
Arugula 'Rocket'

Southeastern, NH(Zone 5b)

Lol you sound like me! I swore I wasn't doing anything or buying anything unless my veggie garden was done!! Still haven't plante dthe Pea Seeds I bought! As usual I get caught up with all my other gardening :(

Salem Cnty, NJ(Zone 7b)

Heehee

Sweet woodruff doesn't spread for me either. I was hoping it would.

I get sidetracked in the garden, too.

Thomaston, CT

My delosperma disappeared over the winter... I had Lavender Ice, & it was so pretty last summer :>(

(Pam) Warren, CT(Zone 5b)

I used to have Sweet Woodruff under trees and shrubs on the east end of LI. It spread gently and made a lovely groundcover, one of my favorites. After hearing its reputation I wouldn't put it in a cultivated perennial bed though, I think it might love it too much, lol.

Southeastern, NH(Zone 5b)

OK I have an area that not much does too well in, I've managed to keep some Hostas alive and a single Trout Lily (I think that's what it's called) Perhaps some Violas. I think they are under the leaves there somewhere.. I have lost the Jacob's Ladders, Virginia Bluebells and pretty sur ethe Bleeding hearts or at least they have gotten smaller than when I first planted them. So I don't think the woodruff will be a problem there ? If it even survives, lol.

(Pam) Warren, CT(Zone 5b)

If it's really dry it might not work, at least to start with. Can you keep it watered for the first summer? Then it would probably be fine on its own unless the soil is impossible.

Southeastern, NH(Zone 5b)

Yes I can be sure to water it at first. Maybe a container would be better.

(Pam) Warren, CT(Zone 5b)

If you want it to be a groundcover, in the ground is better as long as you can help it get going.

Southeastern, NH(Zone 5b)

Thanks :)

Chevy Chase, MD(Zone 7a)

Meredith: I have sweet woodruff in a lot of spots, and it is a wonderful ground cover. If happy, it will indeed spread fairly quickly. But that being said, it is so easy to pull out that it is in an entirely different category than other invasives (bishop's weed comes to mind), where you really have to sieve through the soil to get out every infinitesimal root. I keep moving bits of my sweet woodruff to new spots to see if it will take hold. It is most happy where it is partly shaded and moist.

Southeastern, NH(Zone 5b)

Thanks that is a very helpful explanation!

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

received my box of small conifers from Stanley & Sons tonight - wife watched the UPS truck back down the driveway and said "what did you order?" :) really rather they come and go without her catching me.

They look great and healthy.

Salem Cnty, NJ(Zone 7b)

Hehehe

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

she did get a smile when I came in after looking at them - told her I love these little conifers

Lexington, MA(Zone 6a)

No doubt she likes to see you being happy.

Thomaston, CT

Yeah, the UPS truck was always a problem when my DH was alive.....he couldn't understand the need for plants! I ordered geraniums Azure Rush & Derrick Cook, and hellebore Berry Swirl.....one of my beds didn't do well this winter, several geraniums & heuchera bit the dust.

Lexington, MA(Zone 6a)

I wonder if anyone has experience with Osmanthus Americanus AKA Devilwood? I got three tiny plants for a few bucks fro Nearly Natives, I think. Some sites say it's hardy to zone 5, other say zone 8, so big differences in the predictions.

I am trying to fill in the back of my property with some evergreen plants that tolerate shade. So far, rhodis, both natives and ironclads, and yew plants are the best growers. A few hollys are making it, including longstalk holly. I've killed several white pines, but they're usually just free seedlings. Cranberry Viburnum is going in there for contrast. And its a miracle, a 'Yamhill' American hazelnut tree has survived the winter in deep shade near that area, and it's leafing out. My to-buy list includes inkberry and always more rhodis. Mountain laurel gets too stressed unless I plant them in the front of my house where it's less windy.

Enough from me. Devilwood was totally new. it's a cute little plant that looks like a thinner leafed rhodi, not like the Asian varieties which I believe are not hardy this far north.

Thomaston, CT

I've never heard of it before....hope it does well for you.

Lexington, MA(Zone 6a)

I'll let you'all know. Just call me the experimenter. I'm still waiting to see how many camellias have survived the winter.

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

rosemary the katsura picture is of the JM not a katsura tree - was not sure if you were confused

Lexington, MA(Zone 6a)

I get it now. Katsura is also the name of a JM :P

South China, ME(Zone 5a)
