2013 N Central TX RU April 21st in Arlington #2 TRADE

Arlington, TX

I think they would do better in the ground than in a pot.

Fort Worth, TX

really? ok. when I find a place where they won't get trampled.

Sylvania, GA(Zone 8b)

We are almost done with our gardens. Got the Rose garden done, oh and The Don Juan Rose is sprouting leaves!!! I put it in the rose garden today from the pot, and it was infested with fire ants...quickly rinsed them off and inspected the roots to make sure there were no burrow holes and I think we are good there. I hate ants! I am so allergic to the little suckers. Anyway, I got it in the ground, now I will have to pray over it LOL.

I have a vine that is labeled as the Amethyst basil, but I didn't know basil could be a vine....who did I get that from??? I still have some roses that haven't rooted yet, so I will leave them in the water jars for a bit then plant them later. The Rock Roses are in their bed with some coleus around them for eye candy till they bloom out and I will have daisy's spilling out from under them into the yard as if someone tipped the pot over and they all fell out.

I can't wait to get it all done and post pictures of it. Hopefully by the end of the week. Thanks again everyone - I am still a kid in a candy store!

Angel, I gave you amethyst basil but it is not a vine. It is green with dark purple markings down the center of the leaf and if there are blooms they are pink and it smells strongly of basil.

I suppose I should check the files, but could Dennis or Newtonsthirdlaw suggest growing conditions for north texas and the sedums? I figured bed on the north side, how much sun though?

and the ice plant from Sybram? I didn't know such a beautiful dainty little plant existed. For now I have all on the front porch under the roof, so they get light (northern) a bit of eastern morning sun, and I don't know where to go from here.

Burleson, TX(Zone 8a)

Well, Gypsi, I love having my ice plants on the porch. They will be green and lush with just a few flowers if only in light, but when on the front of the set in covered porch where they get pretty full morning sun, they bloom profusely, and the part towards the sun will quickly spill out of the pot and run down the side.

I've also planted them in the ground on the north side of the house with part sun. They did ok for a while, then looked sickly. I think it was a watering issue. Harder to keep them damp.

Arlington, TX

If its a true ice plant, Delosperma sp., its from south africa and loves sun and heat. They do not like to be kept damp. Now having written this I am not certain which plant is in question. I think I did see some yellow ice plant at the RU.
Not sure but this tells something about them: http://www.monrovia.com/plant-catalog/plants/2644/yellow-ice-plant.php

This one is a little different, beautiful dainty red bloom. Once the drought hits I'm not sure whether I can keep the right moisture level in the ground, or if a pot on the porch would be easier..

I have a fancy watering system. Once a week (once a month on some parts of the lot) I throw a hose on the ground on a slow trickle and leave it for 24 hours, the water doesn't run off, but soaks in, so everything gets a deep deep drink. I have eldarica pines that don't like frequent watering, and young oaks that put down deep roots on this system, but I killed my wisteria with one deep drink too many. To water my foundation, I have planted things near the house and in the front beds that can tolerate this sort of watering. Not sure if the ice plant and sedum will. Everything is allowed to dry out first., but if they are shallow rooted, unless their succulent leaves sustain them, it could be a doom.

Grapevine, TX(Zone 8a)

I've been growing my sedum in a pot in full or partial sun with infrequent watering.

Arlington, TX

All of mine (4 types) are growing along the edges of my part sun beds. It never occured to me to put hardy sedum in pots. I do have some that are not hardy that are potted. As for the ice plant, Delosperma cooperii is magenta colored and is the most commone one sold. It loves sun, heat and well drained soil. I have some growing along the edges of a bed and some in my dry cactus bed. I suspect they can grow in a lot of conditions but they seem to do better when kept dry.

I love sedum and would be interested in swapping different species with anyone.

I have the four varieties that I gave out in a single large pot. It does take a bit of grooming to keep it looking nice since there is a tendency for some of the varieties to overrun the other varieties.

Houston Heights, TX(Zone 9a)

Dennis I do the same thing. I have several varieties growing in the same terra cotta "bowl". BTW I love the ones you gave me, especially the one that is green with a white edge. I had that one once and lost it somehow.

Garland, TX(Zone 8a)

I love mine too! I have never had that one with the white edge--makes a great contrast.

I'd also be interested in trading sedums. I've seen some really cool ways to combine them in interesting displays over on Pinterest. I only have a few common kinds, but I'm actively looking for more. One that I've had a very long time is a little mini one--can't think of its name--but it's sort of like a teeny little ghost plant. I will see if I can get some starts of that one for fall.

Arlington, TX

I am not sure which ones are hardy but there are a lot to order online.

Athens, TX

Dang it !!! I can't beleive I missed it. Haven't had time to "Dave" lately

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

With over 450 post on this one....I think someone needs to start a continued aftermath thread. Just post the link here. Thanks.

Fort Worth, TX

Wow, thank you! And these sedums are all ok outdoors in the cold too? Moving them to sun tomorrow!

Houston Heights, TX(Zone 9a)

I got a canna that I did not request but the tag which is on a plastic knife says "yellow weed". I think yellow weed is referring to the broom weed Sybil and I talked about but the canna, I dont know. It does not look like anything else is planted in the container with the canna.

Also, did anyone end up with extra peach irises? I had requested some but there were none in my stash when I got home.

Fort Worth, TX

I brought a peach iris to your table Steadycam3, but it wasn't labeled (didn't have a marker.) They look just like regular iris. I certainly have extra and could maybe mail a couple after they are done with their reproductive cycle.

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

I just got one and it has already bloomed twice! TY Gypsi!

Fort Worth, TX

New after-party thread for the April 21st roundup.

You're welcome Sheila!

Burleson, TX(Zone 8a)

Sorry, Steadycam. I made all those tags, but could never find any broomweed. There's lots of stuff growing around the roundpen now. I'll be sure to bring you some at the fall RU.

Houston Heights, TX(Zone 9a)

Gypsi, no worry. I just figured if I got someone's canna, maybe someone got my iris. Maybe at the fall RU. No need to mail. Ive got enough to keep me busy way past fall. and Sybram, no worry. do I have someone's canna?

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

Sybram....the broomweed wasn't near the horse pens. As we walked to the woods past the pens, turned left and went a bit further, they were in a mini clearing. You thought Jo was crazy when she had Frank take her picture in them.

Oops....just remembered and you guys come too.....we have a new MUCH SHORTER thread. http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/1310490/
